ANNUAL BILL KING MEMORIAL DERBY, Balfour, will
be cancelled for this year due to the current condition of
the fish stocks in Kootenay Lake. We will re-evaluate
this for next year, but presently, we feel that for the good
of the lake it is the right thing to do. We hope that our
fishermen will understand and will plan to attend once
fish stocks have recovered sufficiently to sustain the
derby. Thank-you! Randy & Truus, Gill & Gift.

Spring Closure Of
Nelson-Salmo Great Northern Trail
The RDCK is closing a portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great
Northern Trail because of bear sightings near Cottonwood
Lake. The closure will be in effect through to June 5.
In consultation with BC Conservation Officer Service,
regional bear biologists and the Ministry of Forest Land
and Natural Resource Operations, the Regional District
of Central Kootenay is initiating an annual spring trail
closure for a portion of the Nelson-Salmo Great Northern Trail. The annual closure will include the trail south of
Cottonwood Lake parking area to Hall Siding. Signs will
be posted accordingly at the entrance to trail closures.
Collared bear data has shown the area from Cottonwood Lake to Hall Siding, particularly the areas of Apex
and Camp Busk, are heavily used by grizzly bears in the
spring. The bears use this area because of its high valued
forage habitat. In most cases the bears move on to higher
elevations by the middle of June. It is felt that an annual
closure will help ensure public safety and benefit the local
bear population from over exposure.
As black bear and grizzly bear activity is common in
the spring and early summer, bears may be present on the
trail system throughout the year so please remember to
always:
• use caution
• do not attempt to view or approach bears
• do not leave garbage or food on trails
Please respect all closures. Thank you for your cooperation.

Betty Joan (Houston) Ector
Part of a Life Remembered
Betty Ector, of Fruitvale, British Columbia, died after a long illness from Alzheimer’s
Disease. Her passing away occurred at Columbia View Lodge in Trail, BC, on April
20th, 2015 while her husband Hugh and oldest son Don were present.
Betty was born in 1931 at Crystal Springs, Mississippi. She lived months past her
83rd year, and had celebrated her 61st wedding anniversary last December. She is the
daughter of Roma and P.D. Houston of Sylvarena, Mississippi. Her surviving children
are Don Ector from Rossland, BC, Miriam Sanchez of Whitewater, Colorado, David
Ector from Boulder, Colorado, Suzanne Ector from Gold Beach, Oregon and Rossland,
BC. Betty and Hugh have four grandchildren: Daniel Ector, Dara Ector, Eric Sanchez
and Laia Ector. Betty’s brother, P.D. (Proc) Houston Jr., and sister Martha Morgan had
predeceased her.
Betty was a teacher who taught at many levels: first as a primary teacher in Alaska and
Argenta, BC; then as a high school teacher at Kaslo, BC, and Louisville, Mississippi.
She somehow had time to earn a Master of Science Degree while teaching at Wood
College in Mathiston, Miss., also while conducting both a camping and horsemanship program. She then transferred her
teaching duties to Mississippi State University and earned the status of Associate Professor.
She had received many honours: ‘Best Girl Athlete’, ‘Head Majorette’ and ‘First Chair Flutist’ at Central High in Jackson,
Miss. At Auburn University, she was selected as “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”
Years later she earned a PhD degree in Physiology at Mississippi State University.
She met Hugh at Auburn where they were married in December, 1953. After marriage they lived and taught at the places
previously mentioned before retiring to Canada, near where Don and Mary (Don’s wife/partner) and Suzanne live. Present
plans are to further honour Betty at the Argenta Community Hall this summer on July 30. All are welcome, of course.

Kaslo is buzzing with the excitement
of our May Days celebration! Every
year at this time our sleepy little town
awakens and becomes a vibrant centre
of activity. This will be the 123rd consecutive year Kaslo has celebrated the
dawn of spring.
There’s so much to do and take in!
Car buff or not, you'll surely agree that
the Show and Shine on Front Street is
an amazing spectacle of unique and
rare cars. The lakeside Vimy Park is
full of activities all weekend long.

you'll find him near the Logger Sports
grounds. At the centre of Vimy Park
you can stroll through an outdoor
market. Enjoy some ‘home cooking’
from the food trucks while you listen
to all sorts of live music, a puppet show
or take in a slo-pitch game.
This year features not one, but two
days of our popular Logger Sports
event. Take a helicopter ride and get a
bird's eye view! The horse show and the
skateboarding competition offer ‘edge
of your seat’ thrills – after which you
can relax and get a massage at Morn-

parade that goes around twice, everyone tags along to end up at Vimy Park.
That's when one of the most beloved
events of Kaslo May Days takes place
right by the gazebo: the May Pole dance
performed by Kaslo's youngsters.
But that's not the end. Monday afternoon is the best time to relax listening to music in the park.
Keep this complimentary schedule,
supported by the sponsoring businesses, handy. You won't want to miss
a thing!

Cellar
Notes Duo
Performs In
Nelson
The Cellar Notes
Duo of Jeff Faragher, cello and Alex
Nichol, double bass
presents a concert
spanning four centuries and six cultures on Monday May 18, 7:30 pm at
Saint Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral, Ward and Silica Streets in
Nelson. Admission is by donation.
Together the cello and the double bass form the foundation upon which the symphony orchestra’s sound is
built. Composers have long known that the brilliance
of the cello reinforced with the dark rich timbre of the
bass creates a potent synergy greater than the sum of the
parts.
Jeff is a prodigious talent with an innovative spirit who
has chosen a life in the Kootenays where he explores the
full range of musical possibilities, including Music Director of The Symphony of the Kootenays.
Alex was an orchestral musician in Canada and the UK
for 25 years before moving to the Okanagan where he
and his wife established Nichol Vineyard Winery. Retiring in 2006, his focus has returned to music-making.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU NEED TO
CALL AN AMBULANCE
What To Say When You call for Help:
First of all determine what the nature of
your emergency is. If it’s ‘obvious’ you need an
ambulance call 911 (available 24/7).. ‘obvious’
examples could be anything from a person
choking; having difficulty breathing; loss of
blood; reduced level of consciousness; a motor
vehicle incident; or a cyclist crashing their bike.
If someone is having health issues and you are
unsure what to do, a number (available 24/7)
you can call is 811 to speak with a health
professional who can advise you.
If you do call 911, the Dispatch Operator will
assist you.
When you call for Help remain calm and
speak clearly, know your location, be able to
identify yourself, state what is happening, who is
involved, and don’t hang up until you are told to
by the dispatcher.
Be prepared - have a list of medications along
with any official medical directives (e.g. Do Not
Resuscitate Order ‘DNR’; or a ‘Living Will’; etc.)
posted on your fridge door. This will greatly assist
medical personnel. Post your address and phone
number near your telephone for quick reference.

changes made to health care are contrary to the
intent of the Canada Health Act and adversely
affect their health and welfare.
Connected Communities meets with managers
from Interior Health twice a year and together
bimonthly to discuss shared health concerns. The
items we are currently working on regionally
are transportation to medical appointments, the
transfer of diagnostic mammogram services to
Trail, wait times for MRI’s, residential care and
cataract surgery, referrals for diagnostic imaging
and laundry services. The local issues we have
raised with Interior Health include physician
recruitment, support for a Nurse Practitioner
and discharge planning. We are communicating
regularly with the Kaslo and Area Select Health
Care Group so that we can coordinate our efforts.
Kaslo’s Connected Communities representatives
are Mary Stickel, Liz Ross and Clarice Caywood.

would like brought forward, contact one of our

Logging Trucks Are Rolling
It’s Time For Kaslo Logger Sports!
Huge loads of logs are being transported all over British
Columbia thanks to the brave men and women of our forestry industry; Sutco, Sicotte, Megla and Hansen Trucking
to name a few, and of course all of these outfits are Kaslo
Logger Sports sponsors.
The cedar poles, the cream of the crop, are going to
Stella-Jones in Revelstoke. This definitely represents logging at its finest and makes me proud to be a part of the
Logger Sports Show Committee which is a tribute to our
forestry workers. Our show has been so popular at the
annual May Days Celebration that we have expanded to
a two day, super-sized show. Novice and Intermediate
Events will run on Saturday, May 16 and Men’s, Women’s
and Open Events on Sunday, May 17. The show goes from
11:30 am to 4:30 pm each day and this year we have five
exciting Canadian Championship Events. Competitors
from across Canada and the United States are registered to
show off their lumberjack skills.
Come on down to Kaslo’s Vimy Park to see all of the
improvements we have made to the grounds. We have
amphitheatre style seating, a new log rolling pond and
two spanking new concession buildings thanks to a lot
of volunteer elbow grease as well as wood donated by
Boards By George, Hamill Creek Timber and Waneco
Enterprises.
Kaslo Logger Sports has been going since 1973 – wow,
that’s 42 years – and has always been a free family event.
This year we have two fantastic announcers, Ben and
Michelle Lefler, along with some special entertainment. Be
sure to come on down to the grounds. We can always use
volunteers to help run the show so please contact Kathy
Freeman at 250-353-2675 or

the Kootenays is
known today as a
place with a resilient spirit where
many of us find a
strong and vibrant
community.”
“Knowledge Network’s collaboration

memorable collection of stories about the history of the
Kootenays that will resonate
with audiences throughout
Canada,” said Rudy Buttignol, President and CEO of
Knowledge Network Corporation. “We are absolutely
delighted to be premiering
Amy’s documentary at the
historic Civic Theatre in
Nelson.”

Director of Original Content at Knowledge Network, will be in town for
the premiere. The last time
they were in Nelson was
for the filmmaker pitch
session and competition,
in which Amy’s project was chosen and commissioned by
Knowledge Network. “It’s an honour to welcome Knowledge Network to Nelson,” says Mayor Deb Kozak. “I’m
always amazed by the talent we have here in our great city,
and am delighted that local historical stories are being told
and showcased by such an important broadcaster.”
Tickets for the premiere of Dreamers and Dissidents
are free to the public and are available at the Civic Theatre website at http://www.civictheatre.ca The broadcast
premiere of Dreamers and Dissidents will be on BC Day,

Would Your Acreage Benefit
From Soil Amendment?
Zellstoff Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more
acres within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using
Biosolids as soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good
options.
Zellstoff Celgar will cover the costs of the consultant to
perform soil sampling, obtaining government authorization
and delivery costs of the fresh Biosolids based on access with
a large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to
accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads.
The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
the Biosolids into their soil.
