Once again it is time to ask for nominations for Kaslo
Citizen of the Year for 2014. This award is sponsored
by the Kaslo & Area Chamber of Commerce. It is the
Chamber’s way of saying Thank you to good neighbours
for making life better for all of us.
In making a nomination, keep in mind a few simple
guidelines:
1. Recognition should have nothing to do with the
nominee’s occupation.
2. We look for nominees who quietly and
inconspicuously do good deeds for the people
in the community, whether it is involvement in
community organizations, or helping a neighbour
weed the garden. When evaluating the nominations,
thoughtful consideration is given to those whose
good deeds are not necessarily well known.
3. Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2014.
These awards have been presented annually, by the
Chamber of Commerce, since 1986. They were presented
occasionally in earlier years.
Please send your nominations to

Is the KDCFS Board For You?
Te Kaslo & District Community Forest Society’s annual
general meeting is coming up soon – April 16. We need to
fll four positions on our nine director board.
Why would you want to put your name forward as a dir-
ector of the board?
Because you will learn a lot. Community forestry is a
unique social/environmental/industrial endeavour. As a
director you are constantly weighing your own experiences
and knowledge and evaluating new information. It doesn’t
matter how experienced you may be in environmental sci-
ences, the forest industry, or community building, you will
fnd yourself learning something new every month.
Because, if you care about local economic development,
the board has tools and resources that can be put to prac-
tical use. Te community forest creates local employment
and training opportunities, and is engaged in partnerships
with Selkirk College and other agencies to increase that
potential. Any efort you put in as a director on this board
has a good chance of hitting the ground.
But it’s not all work. Organizing the Winter in the Forest
Festival is just plain fun; knowing that the extra income
from harvesting is helping out all kinds of groups in our
communities is rewarding; and getting to know people
and our landscape in ways you might otherwise never have
a chance to do, gives you stronger roots here.
And if you’ve heard that being on the community forest
board is personally trying and frustrating, just ask any cur-
rent director. For some time now, directors on the board
have been working together well. Te directors now are:
Erika Bird (Kaslo rep and chair), Chris Webster (RDCK
rep and vice-chair), Steve Anderson (secretary, term end-
ing in April) Jef Mattes (treasurer, term ending in April),
Steve Fawcett (term ending in April), Donna Cormie, Glen
Settle, and Stan Baker.
If you were not a member in 2013, to become a member
you should call 250-353-9677 or email [email protected]
before March 17. If you were a member in 2013, you can
renew your membership at the door on April 16. Nomina-
tions for directors of the board can be accepted until April
2. Tank you for your consideration!

Markings - Lent And Forgiveness
On Tuesday March 4, 5:30 pm, St. Mark’s Church in Kaslo
welcomes all to yummy pancakes, sausages and fruit for our
annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, (the English name
for Mardi Gras aka “Fat Tuesday”). Past tradition suggests
pancakes could use up the household fat before the 40 days
season of Lent: our preparation for Easter. Donations in
gratitude for the abundance of food we enjoy in this land
will be sent to PWRDF, the national Anglican fund for
world relief and development, for this year’s Food Security
focus: Sharing Bread, noting that 1 in 8 people in the world
don’t have enough food to eat, and we want to change that.
If we choose, this Lenten season can help us become leaner,
not only by cutting down on dietary “fat” but also by letting
go of unhealthy habits...like holding grudges, or by taking
on more earth friendly dietary habits.
Te next day at 10:30 am, Ash Wednesday, we will gather
in the hall behind the church at 5th & C Avenue. Each
Wednesday until Easter, we will study a book called For-
give & Get Your Life Back by US Episcopal priest, Dennis
Maynard. Our wise brother, Archbishop Desmond Tutu
once said “Tere is no future without forgiveness”... and can
anyone argue this? A reviewer noted “Very helpful advice;
validates the feelings one has when hurt, yet ofers ways to
get past the pain so that one does not remain a victim.” It’s
a handbook to be re-read repeatedly in order to put princi-
ples into practice.
One cannot get through life without being hurt in some
way – intentionally or unintentionally. Forgiveness is a way
of self preservation as well as a bridge to a renewed rela-
tionship if that’s desirable. Following book study, at noon
Ash Wednesday, we will gather with Christians the world
over to remind ourselves that we’ve come from and will re-
turn to the earth by having ashes placed on our foreheads.
On the Eve of St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 16, 5 pm,
we’ll gather for a potluck party to celebrate Patrick’s herit-
age, with song and good food and drink. And we’ll also
host the annual World Day of Prayer focusing this year
on Egypt, Friday 28 March at 2 pm. We’re a community
who welcomes all who would like to join us for regular
9 am Sunday worship and for any of these occasions, which
nurture us socially and spiritually.

Cancer Society Needs Volunteers
With Dafodil Month just around the corner, the Can-
adian Cancer Society is reaching out and urging Koote-
nay residents to consider volunteering their time to sell
the dafodil pin this April. Te Society has an urgent need
for more volunteers during this month. Tese volunteers
will work in communities across BC during April to re-
mind us all to buy and wear a pin to show support for
those fghting cancer.
Volunteers like Cranbrook’s Susan Fahey help the So-
ciety to achieve its vision of creating a world where no
Canadian fears cancer – and just a few hours can make a
huge diference.
At age 37 Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer. Su-
san grew up in Cranbrook and has worked at the same job
for 20 years, even through her cancer treatment.

Cancer Society cont’d from pg 32
During her recovery process, Susan became involved with
the Canadian Cancer Society as a volunteer. Her volunteer
role kept her going through her recovery. She felt it was
helpful to know that she could help others, that she wasn’t
the only one, and that she didn’t have to face it alone.
Afer a few years with the Cancer Connection program,
Susan went on to volunteer for Relay For Life and then
became a leader for Dafodil Month. “I know what its
like to get diagnosed, it’s extremely scary. I hope to show
people that you can survive it. Tere is hope and that is
what the Cancer Society has always shown me.”
Still a volunteer in Dafodil Month, Susan has now been
11 years cancer free. “Anything can happen in your life, you
can think ‘this is the end or the worst thing that ever hap-
pened to me’, and it was, but you can also realize you can
fght it. Join the fght!”

LOCAL
“It’s not hard to decipher how this tiny town in the
middle of nowhere was voted the best ski town in
North America by skiers” - Powder Magazine
“Given its setting on Kootenay Lake, in the heart of
a mountain range Nelson is an outdoor enthusiast’s
dream” - LA Times
“This small town will make you reassess what you
think civilization should be like” - The Guardian
“Up here, it’s all about community: Networking takes
place on the sidelines of the kids’ soccer field, folks tend
to boycott big chain stores, and if you choose work over
family here, you stick out” - Sunset Magazine
