20 Years Since Nirvana¶s Smells Like Teen Spirit
...it was 1991, I was 12 yrs old. I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio while visiting my Dad. It blew me away; I was hooked from day one, bought Nevermind, and then bought Bleach shortly afterwards, amazing music. Nirvana made me put my GNR album down, and opened our world to a new sound. The sound of grunge....Seattle was now on the map, forever.
I still believe to this day, Kurt did not kill himself that cold April morning in '94. I've done so much research into this. I still follow Private Investigator Tom Grant on www.cobaincase.com. Eldon Hoke AKA El Duce was offered money from Courtney Love to kill Kurt and make it look like a suicide, and since El Duce, from the band "The Mentors" spoke out about his candid offer, he's dead. Pushed into an oncoming train in Riverside CA, approximately seven days after giving his statement during an interview to Nick Broomfield. Nick was filming a documentary about Kurt, Nirvana and everything in between, called "Kurt & Courtney." Not only did El Duce talk on camera of what Courtney wanted, he passed a polygraph, confirming he was telling the truth. A man named "Allen Wrench" was involved, El Duce slipped up at the end of the interview, saying, I'll let the FBI catch Allen, opps, and then he starts to laugh. He told Nick he wished he'd done it, cause money talks. And that Courtney had it all mapped out at the house, exactly how to do it and how to set it up for the police to appear Kurt killed himself. He was the last person seen with El Duce, the same day he died. They know the truth, and it needs to be told to us.
See, Kurt was tired of Courtney, he wanted a divorce, he wanted out. He was tired of playing with Nirvana and pretending he was having fun. In fact, the truth is, he wasn't enjoying Nirvana like he did in the beginning. Kurt was a shy person; he did not like the fame and fortune that came with the price of Nirvana. He disliked what the band was turning into. He did not like the pressure of the youth relying on every word he screamed in his songs. Kurt would talk about how much he loved playing at the beginning and his love for small venues and crowds. But it all got way too big, way too fast. In only a matter of a few years, Nirvana rose from a little punk rock band in Aberdeen Washington, to the biggest fucking thing on the planet. Was it bad
timing? Was America ready for grunge? I think so, I think we were tired of the 80's hair bands and scream rock and tight fucking blue jeans and big frazzled hair-sprayed style hair with eye liner. America wanted a change in style and when Nirvana cracked open its sound, we responded. Bands like Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, STP, all fed fuel to the fire we wanted. And times were great. This was my youth; this made me who I am today. And I am forever grateful for it.
Sometimes I wish I could rewind time and go back to 1991. When life was simple. Times when the Internet didn't matter to us, iTunes wasn't thought of yet, and FaceBook was never around to occupy too much of our time. I would sit around in my bedroom, with my Sony Walkman and my stereo, just waiting to hit that record button once the DJ started playing my song. And dammit if he was talking at the beginning of my song! Remember those days? Remember the days of tapes stacked on top of tapes? Remember grabbing a tape, slapping it in, hitting record and wondering if you were recording over something you didn't want to! Boy, those were the days. I don't know what made me want to write a short note about my youth. I think I saw the "20 years since Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit" and it hits deep.
I really wish Seattle would reopen the case and take a deeper look at what was going on. Kurt was not suicidal. He wanted to quit Nirvana. And that's exactly what the alleged suicide note said. The entire letter was about him wanting to leave the band, only in the last few lines, written in a totally different handwriting, spoke of him saying bye to Courtney and his daughter Francis Bean. After Kurt left the rehab center in LA, some other things were going on. Courtney hired PI Tom Grant to "find" Kurt since she claimed he was missing. Now a lot went on, and Tom Grant documents all this on www.cobaincase.com. He will tell you about all the lies from Courtney and all the misguided information regarding the events of his disappearance, and then finally, his body being discovered by the electrician. Tom Grant has devoted his life to getting this case reopened and having those involved brought to justice. Also while all this was going on, someone had stolen Kurt's credit card and were making random charges, all, which stopped soon after his body was discovered. Some of the other keynotes were the amount of drugs in his body. Kurt had 3 times the lethal dose of heroin in his system. There would have been no physical way for him to shoot himself. Experts say he would have passed out within seconds of administering
himself the drugs. There was a plant knocked over, showing signs of a struggle at the scene. There was a chair propped up against the door from the inside, staged to look like he was barricading himself inside, but when the police showed up and opened the door, the chair fell down, because whoever set it up, placed it on the wrong side. His ID and drugs were placed right beside his body, open in plain view for identification. It's said that the gun he used was too long to place a finger on the trigger and point at your face without using your foot to pull the trigger. But, Kurt was found wearing his shoes, you can see this in the photo that was released with Kurt lying dead on the floor in the greenhouse.
I could go on and on. It was just too easy for the Seattle police dept. They showed up, saw a dead rock star junkie on the floor, drugs and paraphernalia nearby. And an apparent "suicide note" on the table. Case close, it was a suicide. They actually ruled it a suicide, on the scene, prior to any autopsy or toxicology. It was a very sloppy investigation. And Seattle knows this. This is one of the mean reasons they do not want to reopen the case. It would be a huge embarrassment for the police department. So in the meantime, what do we do? I guess we wait and see what happens. Hopefully one day there will be justice for Kurt. And if not for him, for his daughter Francis, who deserves to know the truth.
