Go Potluck
Don’t feel like you have to do it all alone! Whether you’re hosting a party or dinner for family or friends, don’t hesitate to make it potluck. For a small get-together, ask guests to bring an appetizer and you provide the wine. For a holiday dinner, ask each guest to bring a side dish (specify vegetable or starch) and you focus on the meat. Everyone feels included and you won’t spend days sweating in the kitchen.

Make the Most of Music
Rotate your soundtrack to match the pace of the evening. Start with something upbeat that matches the mood of your party. Scale back to something sans lyrics if you sit down to eat – the words will compete with good dinner conversation. Turn up the volume if you’re having a large cocktail party. Think about where your guests will hang out – on the porch? You may need to pull your speakers outdoors if it’s not already wired, and now you can buy rechargeable speakers that you can move from room to room!

Shop Online Safely
According to the National Retail Federation, approximately 72 million people shopped online on Cyber Monday, the online version of Black Friday. If you plan to shop remotely this year, follow these safety tips from the Federal Trade Commission. • Know what you’re getting. Is it a real Chanel handbag? • Look for signs a site is safe. Look for a closed padlock on the browser’s status bar – before you enter your personal & financial information. When asked to provide payment information, the beginning of the website’s URL address should change from http to shttp or https, indicating that the purchase is encrypted or secured. • Secure your computer. At a minimum, your computer should have anti-virus and antispyware software and a firewall. • Use credit cards. Credit cards are generally a safer option because they allow buyers to seek a credit from the issuer if the product isn’t delivered or isn’t what was ordered. • Keep a paper trail. Print and save records of your online transactions. • Turn your computer off when you’re finished. Scammers who want to install malicious software on your machine and then control it remotely to commit cyber crime look for computers that are on 24/7. www.ftc.gov

Beat Holiday Stress
A busy schedule can make you feel frazzled. Take a few minutes to find your center and avoid feeling overwhelmed. • Start each morning slowly. Instead of jumping out of bed, take a minute to breathe and stretch. • Walk. Even if you only have 15 minutes in the evening, a peaceful stroll will ease mental and physical tension. • Breathe. When your shoulders become tense, focus your attention to your breath. Inhale to the count of 4 and exhale to the count of 8 – continue this pace until you feel your body and mind relax again. • Delete a to-do. You don’t have to attend every party, school function or other “commitment.” Say yes to what you really want to do, and enjoy the season!

Pamper Yourself
Facials, massages and other treatments should find a regular spot on your agenda. Don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself! And, when you can’t make it to the spa, learn a few DIY at-home tricks to decompress. • Soak in a hot bath. • Give yourself a facial. • Give yourself a mani/pedi • Slather on a rich lotion and relax while your body soaks it up.

Look for colorful fabric and ribbon for your holiday gift wrapping – it’s fun, festive and easy on the environment since you can re-use it. Add pine cones or colored bells as a fun accent. - CAMILLE GALAVIZ, Atlanta, GA

You recycle at home so why not carry your good habits into your work life? If your office doesn’t already have recycling bins set up, take the initiative. Once you and your office mates get in the habit, it will come naturally to toss the soda cans in the bin rather than the basket. Please Recycle Your Little Black Book!
We know you love to hold on to your Little Black Books for all of the great recommended resources, but when your dog-eared copy becomes worn out, please recycle it! Resources Saved Per Ton of Paper Recycled • 17 trees • 380 gallons of oil • three cubic yards of landfill space • 4000 kilowatts of energy • 7000 gallons of water This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings and 60 pounds less of air pollution! The 17 trees saved (above) can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year. burning that same ton of paper would create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide.

Organic Labeling
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) standard defines four levels of organic labeling. 1.) “100% Organic.” All components are organically grown and certified and all processes used to manufacture the garment conform to the processing requirements. 2.) “Organic.” At least 95% of the fibers are organically grown and all processing adheres to the environmental processing requirements. 3.) “Made with organic.” At least 70% of the garment has been organically grown. 4.) “Less than 70% organically produced constituents.” Maybe it has some organic fiber content. All non-organic garment components may be processed and handled without regard to the OTA standards. What you see is what you get.

Makeover Your Makeover
• Read the labels. Look for ingredients that you understand, like rosemary, lavender, etc. • Use fewer products. Your skin absorbs everything – good and bad. • Use mild soaps and wash your hair every other day. • Cut down on your use of powders – avoid the use of baby powder on newborns and infants. A number of ingredients common in powder have been linked to cancer and other lung problems when inhaled.

betty buzz: Water cOnservatiOn You can make small changes daily that have a big impact, and you can make large changes when the time comes (when the old washing machine takes its final spin) to make your home greener and greener.

Save Water 1.) Stop leaks – studies have shown that homes can waste up to 10% due to leaks. 2.) Replace your old toilet with a new, energy-efficient model (1.6 gallon per flush). 3.) Replace your washing machine – it uses the second largest amount of water in your home, just behind the toilet. Look for Energy Star™ rated washers which use 35 – 50% less water and 50% less energy per load. 4.) Choose the right plants – indigenous plants require less water. 5.) Don’t over water the plants. Check your irrigation system for leaks and make sure it has a rain shutoff device. If you want to know how much water you currently use, check out www.h2ouse.com and use their Water budget Calculator to show you where you can save.

Use Rain Barrels What worked 2,000 years ago still works today. People used to collect rainwater in clay containers for use during the dry months. Now you can purchase rain barrels for your own home and minimize use of local water supplies. Place the barrels under the corner eaves of your home, collect rainwater, attach a hose directly to the barrel, and voilá, you have the best garden and lawn water available! www.rainbarrelguide.com

According to a study by NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA), the common indoor plant may provide a natural way to help combat “sick building syndrome” – buildings that have high levels of contaminants and cause occupants to become ill. More than just a decorative item, the indoor plants effectively absorb harmful gases and clean the air inside modern buildings. NASA research on indoor plants has found that living plants are so efficient at absorbing contaminants in the air that some will be launched into space as part of the biological life support system aboard future orbiting space stations. The study named the top 10 plants most effective in removing formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide from the air. Offset Your Carbon Footprint
Use the carbon footprint calculator at www.terrapass.org by completing a simple form with the year, make, model and mileage of your car. With a click of a button, you have an estimate of the amount of carbon dioxide your car puts in the air every year, and a dollar amount that would fund the reduction of your carbon emissions through clean energy and carbon reduction projects. To balance the emissions of a ’99 Volvo wagon driven the average 12,000 miles per year, you pay $59.40 annually. You can purchase the offset from this site as well.

Going green isn’t as hard and expensive as you think. You can gradually make changes in your home that will make an impact in the long-run. When I run out of household supplies (light bulbs, cleaning products, etc), I replace them with eco-friendly versions. I’ve already made the switch with my laundry detergent, dish detergent and all-purpose spray cleaner. Even though my entire house isn’t green, I know that I’m making a difference, little-by-little! - ALLISON COX MCCUTCHEON, Obviouslee Marketing 31

Halloween Safety
The FDA and Consumer Product Safety Commission recommend the following safety tips. • To avoid snacking while trick-or-treating, don’t send trick-or-treaters out on an empty stomach. • Look at all candy for evidence of tampering and get rid of any home-made goods. • Test any face paint/makeup on a small part of the cheek before full application. • Add reflective material/tape to costumes. • Ensure costumes fit properly to prevent tripping or snagging. • Carry a flashlight.

Free of Free Weights
Some women avoid lifting weights for fear of “bulking up.” However, the use of light, free weights helps tone your muscles, without adding bulk. In addition, light weights tone not only the muscle you are directly using, but opposing muscles as well. And, studies have estimated that for each pound of muscle that you add to your body, you burn an additional 35 to 50 calories per day.

Working Out While Under the Weather
Many people fall prey to colds during the fall and winter months, and we’ve all used the sniffles as an excuse to skip out on our workouts. However, scientists at Ball State University conducted a study about whether or not exercising with a cold prolonged or shortened the bug. The results showed that while exercising with a cold does not necessarily aid the recovery process, it doesn’t hurt it either. In addition, regular exercise prevents you from catching the cold in the first place.

Credit Score Myths
According to Experian, one of the three major credit reporting agencies, a few myths prevail in regards to credit scores. Myth #1 Checking my own credit report will lower my score Personal inquiries, also known as “soft inquiries” or “below the line inquiries,” are not visible to lenders and therefore are not part of your credit score calculation. So checking your own credit report or score does NOT negatively impact your score. Myth #2 Applying for new credit will lower my score This depends on the type of credit you’re applying for. If you apply for several credit cards within a short period of time, the number of inquiries will go up, which could drop your score. Buying a Home
The type of loan you choose will affect how much you have to put down, pay monthly and for how long. Don’t forget to add the closing costs to the grand total. Adjustable-rate loans usually offer a lower initial interest rate. The interest rate fluctuates over the life of the loan. When interest rates rise, generally so do your loan payments; and when interest rates fall, your monthly payments may be lowered. Conventional loans are mortgage loans other than those insured or guaranteed by a government agency such as the FHA, the VA or the Rural Development Services. Fixed-rate loans generally have repayment terms of 15, 20 or 30 years. Both the interest rate and the monthly payments (for principal and interest) stay the same for the life of the loan. www.federalreserve.gov

Host a Pumpkin Carving Party
Entertain the children and get your front porch ready for trick-or-treating with a pumpkin-carving party! Try these secrets to boast the best Jack-O-Lantern on the block. • Select a large, light orange pumpkin. The bigger the pumpkin, the easier it is to carve. Similarly, lighter colored pumpkins tend to be softer. • Cut a lid around the top of the pumpkin at a 45-degree angle; if you cut the lid vertically, it can fall through. • Save the seeds for a healthy, tasty snack! • Scrape the back wall of the pumpkin extra well, because that’s where the light will reflect when you light up the gourd. • If you want the Jack-OLantern to last, soak it in bleach water, dry it thoroughly, and coat the entire pumpkin (inside and out) with vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to prevent it from shriveling. • Trace the pattern you want directly on the pumpkin before you start carving. • Consider using a touch-light instead of a candle to reduce the fire-hazard risk. If you do use a candle, leave the lid off of the pumpkin. www.about.com

Watch your sodium intake to fight off bloating. When ordering at a restaurant, look closely at the descriptions for how the chef prepares the food. Fall Harvest Picks
The fall vegetable crops often include heartier options. Follow these tips to choosing the best veggies and then cooking them to yummy perfection. Sweet Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamins A and C and B-6, as well as fiber, copper and potassium. Look for firm, medium-sized potatoes with tapered ends. You can bake them and top with butter, cinnamon and a little brown sugar for a sweet side dish or slice them into thin circles and bake a healthy sweet potato chip. Turnips are an excellent source of vitamin C. Choose ones with smooth white and purple skin. They should be small to medium in size, about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, and should feel heavy. You can boil and mash them with butter and cream like potatoes or roast with sea salt. Swiss Chard is a good source of vitamins A and C and iron. Look for crisp, tender leaves that are not overgrown and are brightly colored. Sauté in olive oil and sea salt until wilted. Winter Squash is an excellent source of vitamin A and C, potassium and fiber. Pick a squash that feels heavy for its size. The skin should be thick and hard without blemishes. Halve, remove seeds, and sprinkle with salt, pepper and olive oil. Roast in 350 º for 30 to 45 minutes until the flesh is tender. www.health.discovery.com

Study Tips for Kids
Help your child do their best in school by creating a positive atmosphere at home for studying. • Designate a certain period of time, the hour before or after dinner for example, for your children do their homework. • Buy a large calendar, and post near the study area. Ask your child to circle exam dates and project due-dates to help them visually see how they’ll need to budget their time. • Teach your child the difference between studying and completing an assignment; have them take notes on reading assignments and verbally summarize what they’ve read, teach them how to write study guides or flashcards with key topics, and make sure they know how to read charts and tables. • Actively assist your children with their homework, but resist doing it for them. Quiz them over terms or call out words for them to spell back to you as a study-buddy. If the child can independently do the assignment without your help, don’t hover. www.childdevelopmentinfo.com

Buying the Right Winter Coat
While Charleston doesn’t compare to Chicago in terms of cold-weather, it still gets chilly enough to wear a heavier coat. Consider this purchase a long term-investment. • Avoid synthetic blend fabrics, and choose something more durable, like cashmere-and alpaca-wool blends. • Select classic, neutral colors, such as black, navy, gray, chocolate brown or camel. • If you are short, look for knee-length cuts; if you are taller, choose a coat proportional to your body. Plus-sized women should avoid A-line coats and seek out longer, fitted coats. www.suite101.com

How to “Look” Shampooed
If you don’t have time to shower, don’t panic. There are plenty of ways to cheat the system. • Sprinkle baby powder (if you have blonde or light-colored hair) in your palms and rub it into the roots to soak up any oil. If you have red or darker-colored hair, specialty beauty stores sell colored powders that do the same trick. • Dry shampoo is a second option. You spray it into your roots like hairspray, making your hair look fresh again. • Another option is no-rinse shampoos. You apply to dry hair, rub it into your scalp and wipe it out with a towel. While these options may not be as good as the real deal, they’ll definitely do the trick in a crunch! www.thebeautybrains.com

Keep Your Summer Skin Year-Round
To keep your skin smooth and moisturized as the weather gets cooler, follow these simple tips. • Drink enough water. Hypo-What??
We’ve all heard that we need to stay hydrated. But there is such a thing as being too hydrated, and it is called hyponatremia, or water intoxication. Hyponatremia is very rare, but occurs when someone consumes too much water, which causes the brain to swell. Symptoms range from nausea and vomiting to hallucinations and seizures. To avoid hyponatremia, drink a sports drink such as Gatorade™ when doing something that requires a lot of endurance, such as running a marathon. www.healthline.com

Forgotten Fiber
We often overlook an important part of our diet – fiber. With benefits such as aiding digestion, lowering cholesterol and helping with weight loss, make sure to sneak fiber into your next meal. An easy way to up the intake is to sprinkle flax seeds onto your salad for a healthy extra crunch. You can also find fiber in beans, nuts, and whole grains, as well as fruits and veggies. www.healthywomen.org

White Vinegar Magic
Consumers in the South buy and use more white distilled vinegar than in any other region of the country. And, for good reason. White distilled vinegar effectively kills most mold, bacteria, and germs; you avoid using harsh chemicals, so it’s environmentally friendly; and it’s very economical. Try these cleaning tricks for a sparkling home. • To make the toilet bowl sparkle, pour in a cup or more of diluted white distilled vinegar and let it sit several hours or overnight. Scrub well with the toilet brush and flush. • To remove paint from windows try using undiluted, hot white distilled vinegar. Give the solution time to soften the paint before removing with a razor edge tool. • Remove wallpaper easily by using a paint roller to wet the surface thoroughly with a solution of equal parts white distilled vinegar and hot water. Or, spray on until saturated. • Remove stains from coffee and teacups by scrubbing them gently with equal parts of salt (or baking soda) and white distilled vinegar. Rinse clean.

Organizing the Home Office
More and more people telecommute these days, and an organized home office becomes key to productivity. • Have a place for everything. Keep items that you use daily closest, and items that you use weekly further out. • Create a filing system that works. Set up three file folders: to read, to file and to do. Reorganize these folders at the end of each day as needed. • Don’t forget the computer. Set up an organized computer filing system as well. Color code folders that you use often – blue for bookkeeping, green for new projects, etc. • Clean off your desk at the end of each day. A clean desk in the morning helps you get off on the right foot.
