NEW ARTICLES AND CAREER SEARCH TIPS EACH MONTH

LMA President: 'Marketers who are lawyers know the product'
By Jerry Crimmins Law Bulletin staff writer
Newly minted and even experienced lawyers sometimes discover they really want to sell — to be marketers — not just as a part of practicing law, but full time. "By my last count, there are 27 members of the (Legal Marketing Association) Midwest Chapter who have JDs," said Brian Pitts, assistant director of public relations for Mayer, Brown LLP. "Given the state of the legal industry, I know there are freshly minted lawyers who are having a hard time finding a law job and are considering other career options," including marketing, Pitts said. He is also chair of the LMA Midwest PR & Marketing Committee. Four lawyers who switched to full-time marketing or chose it from the start told the Law Bulletin why they did. Tasneem K. Goodman Goodman, director of marketing for Katten, Muchin, Rosenman LLP, is the only lawyer she knows who leads her firm in marketing and business development full time and is also a partner in the firm. She started practicing bankruptcy law at Kirkland & Ellis LLP from 2002 to 2005 and then practiced transactional law at Latham & Watkins LLP until 2007. As the "frontline contact" at Kirkland for bankruptcy clients, on behalf of her partner, Goodman said she noticed "I enjoyed and had a knack for serving clients' needs, for anticipating clients needs before they ever verbalized them to us." Goodman also wrote legal articles at both firms that were published, prepared partners to give speeches, and prepared "pitch material" for clients and potential clients. "I also just had a genuine passion and interest in the area coupled with a willingness and desire to learn something new, tackle it and succeed," she said. When Katten sought a former practicing attorney to fill the role of marketing director, she applied and was hired. Today, Goodman decides what Katten's marketing and business priorities are. "I have more ownership for the work I do now. … I put myself on the line more now than I did as a practicing lawyer," she said. "I helps to love what you do, and I really do." Megan M. McKeon While she was a student at The John Marshall Law School, McKeon got a side job as marketing clerk at Schiff, Hardin LLP. Her original plan had been to be an intellectual property litigator. She said in her first week at Schiff, Hardin she knew she wanted to be a marketer. Schiff's marketing and communications director, David A. Milberg, who is also a lawyer, "kind of enlightened me that this thing even existed." McKeon said she discovered that marketers help lawyers "to see what the problem is from the client's perspective, help them to see how it's affecting the client's business, how it's keeping the client up at night." Milberg convinced her to follow through and get her law degree. "I frankly don't think I could have gotten the job I have right now if I didn't have a law degree," she said. "It paid off for me. And for them." "Them" is the law firm of McDonnell, Boehnen, Hulbert & Berghoff LLP, where McKeon has been marketing director since the day she was sworn in as a lawyer in 2005. Today, "I really love my job every day," she said. She said she now gets to interview clients about their needs. And "I have like 75 different personalities (lawyers) I get to manage … every single day and solve problems." Nancy H. Dove For six years, Dove worked as a law clerk for the Illinois Appellate Court helping to draft justice's opinions. "I wanted to sit in a room and write all day," she said. And she did. Unusually, prior to that, Dove had worked for 20 years in marketing. Before she went to law school, she was vice president of marketing at the Museum of Science and Industry. One day while she was a law clerk, John F. Shonkwiler, a friend at the law firm Novack and Macey LLP, a litigation boutique, "told me about their 'small but mighty' branding campaign designed by Ross Fishman of Fishman Marketing. "I thought, 'This law firm is really ahead of the curve.' It seemed to me that law firms weren't doing branding, weren't doing the kinds of advertising that Novack and Macey was doing," Dove said. Then suddenly, Shonkwiler "calls and says, 'We need a marketing person. Why don't you come and interview?'" "I was so impressed with the opportunity to work on 'small but mighty,'" that Dove took the job. "I've been here since April. I'm very happy to be here. It combines my marketing past and my lawyer past." Mark J. Levin In college, Levin managed rock bands, co-founded two Chicago record labels, and planned to do entertainment law after law school. But the first legal job he found was insurance defense. "There wasn't a fit there." So he joined West Publishing in account management and sales and moved up to strategy and business development for the West Education Group through 2007. On the side, he still negotiated entertainment contracts. Along the way, he discovered "I like the marketing side better. I'm more of a strategy and business development guy as opposed to down in the details of contracts. "I like to think outside of the sort of standard deal frame and think of what could be as opposed to what is." In 2007, Levin joined Akina Corp. in Chicago, "a consulting firm that helps law firms with business development." He encountered the law firm of Levenfeld, Pearlstein LLC through Akina and was hired as director of marketing and business development at Levenfeld in 2008. Among other things, Levin created Levenfeld's tagline, "Unusually good," seen under the firm name on its website. Soon, at the end of this month, Levin will get to market himself. "I'm opening my own company, TraitSpikes," he said. The new firm will assist law firms in recruiting. It says it "identifies the intrinsic traits of top performers at a given law firm, and the hiring candidates that best match those profiles." Nathan Darling, president of the Legal Marketing Association, said lawyers bring one key skill to marketing jobs. "In our industry, lawyers are the product." Marketers who are lawyers know the product, he said.

4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY

Illinois Paralegal Association
Getting the Right Things Done When Your World Is Crazy Busy By Vicki Voisin, ACP It’s no secret that we live in a crazy busy world. No matter how much you do, your “to do” list is still a mile long and you always run out of day before you run out of list. You’re forever scrambling just trying to just keep up. It’s probably safe to say that you’ve probably given up on staying ahead. And that’s just at work...add your personal and social obligations and it’s no wonder you’d like to just hide under the covers some mornings and skip the rat race. So how do you get things done? And not just any old “things” but the right things? First, clear your mental desk. Take 10-15 minutes and write down everything that you need to do. This is everything that pops into your head, from the trial brief to your friend’s baby gift to your mother-in-law’s birthday card to getting a plumber in to fix that leak. These are just examples — you get the idea. Second, grab a blank piece of paper or spiral notebook. Pick 7 important things from your “everything” list. Write them down...and actually write them, don’t type them. Third, do those 7 things in the order you listed. When you finish with one, move on to the next, and then the next, working through all 7 one by one. Fourth, do the same thing tomorrow. And the day after and the day after that. If you don’t finish something today, it can be moved to tomorrow’s list if you still think it’s important. If its importance has changed, forget it. Just because it’s on the list one day doesn’t guarantee it a place on tomorrow’s list. Fifth, use a timer. Once you get this approach down pat, add a timer to your routine. For example, this newsletter is always on my “To Do” list so that it gets done in parts and doesn’t end up being an all day project. I allow 30 minutes for each part. So when “write newsletter” shows up on my list each day, I set my timer for 30 minutes and work on it for that chunk of time. This keeps me totally focused and I often get the newsletter done in less time. One more thing: to tame the always present email, I check it at set times each day or between tasks (from above) if I’m expecting something important. I also ‘book’ an hour into my calendar for each day when nothing’s planned. This time is used for whatever comes up and, if nothing comes up, I choose whether to do something else from my list, take a long walk, write an article or, if I’m really ambitious, make a really nice dinner for The Don. . .whatever I’m inspired to do. The above makes three assumptions: You have written goals and objectives AND are determined to achieve them. You understand that perfection and procrastination may derail your ‘To Do’ list and you avoid them as much as possible You delegate anything that isn’t in your best interest. Time Management is a hot topic. This article gives you the simplest system for managing your time: write it down and do the things you’ve written down. Everything else is just noise that clutters your brain. Your challenge is simple: Try the 5 steps above. As written. Give it three weeks and see how much more you’re getting done every day. ©2010 Vicki Voisin, Inc.
