Needing More Work on Your Resume - Part I
Nancy Mackevich Glazer is manager of Legal Launch LLC. The mission of Legal Launch is to give uplifting and creative career advice to 3Ls, recent law school grads and experienced attorneys. Nancy helps her clients land gratifying employment - legal or nonlegal - in a competitive market. www.LegalLaunch.net -
[email protected]
My name is Nancy Glazer. I have been helping law students and recent grads find jobs in law for 25 years, although this is my first contribution to the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin's blog, Attorneys in Transition. As I'm new around here, you might expect me to write an uplifting piece about how great your chances are to land the job of your dreams. My clients know, "uplifting" is what I typically do best, making their job searches exciting, "upbeat" even. What I'd like to do with this introductory writing is give you something of value that will actually improve your resume and help get you an interview. My suggestions always require more work on your part. I know you have finally crossed off the "revise resume" entry from your lengthy "to do" list. Here I am, new kid on the block, saying, "Take another look!" (I know, too, that you've revised your resume nearly 100 times and that you just can't even look at it any more without getting dizzy …) Okay. Do you have your resume in hand? Let's check to see if your resume is cutting-edge: 1. Does your resume add value or "quantify" what work you performed for a past employer or client? A cutting-edge resume for 2011 helps a prospective employer see in real numbers how your past work was valued. For example, if you clerked in-house for an insurance company, your resume might say: "Creatively helped resolve a multi-party lawsuit."

FAMILY LAW ATTORNEYS
Established Law Office seeks Hard Working, Honest, Client/Court/Computer Savvy, Career Oriented, Happy, Family Law Associates for our Oak Park and Lombard Offices. FAX 708-358-0887
This is a great entry. However, to add value and show a future employer how you are even more valuable, consider changing the entry to read: "Saved company $200,000 in legal fees by creatively resolving a complex, multi-party coverage lawsuit." By adding more detail (provided you can remember the resulting successes you actually had), you have now quantified the value of your work. Everyone is looking to save money; this entry now hits a chord with the reader. In addition, you have now described to a hiring attorney that you handled a specific kind of case regarding a coverage issue and that that it was complex. These details, especially the cost savings, help a prospective employer see that you are the one he wants to hire. 2. On your resume, did you indicate that you observed trials or depositions? If the answer to this question is "yes," know this: the attorneys reading your resume or sitting on the other side of the desk from you don't really care that you watched courtroom action. While seeing trials and depositions may have been quite exciting for you, if you worked for a judge or for litigators, this experience is simply assumed. If you are fighting for room in every line of your resume, this is where to cut in this section. If you must include the phrase about your talents "observing" in any part of your resume, try to bury it, perhaps in the middle of the section or at the end. If these strategies were helpful to you, watch for Part II of this blog next week. That entry will discuss how you describe your experience writing motions and briefs in your resume.

4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY
Illinois Paralegal Association
RAIN BY: Caren Mansfield, a member of the Illinois Paralegal Association Rain. Sometimes I think I am like a cat. I hate rain. But living in the country I welcome rain and love it because my well will stay full, the crops will grow and the wild animals and birds will survive. But I won’t be out in it. Rain makes me want to curl up in bed and pull the covers over my head. Rain makes me feel a little dreary. This time of year the cold makes me feel the same way. While I really enjoy the seasons here in Illinois, I really like having no reason to go out in the cold. I hate having to put on the hat, coat, gloves, scarf, boots and anything else to keep warm. Now you are thinking okay whiner, what’s your point you rain wimp. Thinking about how I felt about rain and cold weather lead to a little Internet research. Guess what? Rain does affect other people the same way. How does it affect paralegals? Like it affects everyone else. Here’s what I found from various web sites. Weather can make you feel more pain, be a little less smart and affect your pet. Biometeorology is the study of interactions between atmospheric pressure and living organisms. Biometeorology also includes the study of modification of the atmosphere by pollution, deforestation, desertification and other changes. We know that as vegetation is replaced by buildings and structures which hold heat, the heat in urban areas rises. Or drought may be increased by the lack of vegetation to hold rainfall. When you watch the news at night you are given information on the pollen count and mold levels. In hot weather your news team will give instructions on how to prevent overheating, or in cold weather, how to prevent hypothermia. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather to prevent either of the foregoing. Changes in weather cause individuals to react differently. It depends on our sex, age, state of health and where we live. The young, old and chronically ill are affected more. Women are more sensitive than men to changes in the weather. Did you have a relative who could predict the weather by the pain in a joint? Arthritis and bursitis are affected by changes in the weather. We are all too young to remember when patients with tuberculosis were sent to Arizona or similar climates to recuperate. When you read classic novels the authors speak of their characters going to the seashore for their health. Climatotherapy recommends different climates for different health concerns. A study was performed to determine if barometric pressure affected mental ability. When the amount of barometric pressure in a room was varied randomly all the volunteers suffered from concentration lapses. A posit is that changes in air pressure may affect blood pressure which affects brain activity. One really interesting notation I read was that the change in the weather affecting people was written about by Hippocrates, the Greek physician, around 400 B.C. [See www.anapsid.org/biomet.html]. The changes in the climate due to global warming may have serious effects on our health. While we may experience shorter winters we can expect hotter summers. Hotter summers with high humidity can cause more heat stroke, dehydration, physical and mental stress. Hotter weather can cause more storms with the accompanying changes in barometric pressure. Okay, now I don’t feel quite so wimpy. When I am just not quite as smart or ready to jump in bed because it is raining or too cold I can say.....It’s just the weather. For information on the paralegal profession visit the Illinois Paralegal Association website at www.ipaonline.org. Visit Caren Mansfield at
