Nearly 25 percent of law school graduates from the Class of 2009 reported that they landed temporary jobs, including judicial clerkships, according to a recently released report by the National Association for Law Placement. Graduates of the 2009 class for whom employment status was known reported an overall employment rate of 88.3 percent, which marks a 3.6 percent decrease from the recent historical high of 91.9 percent for the Class of 2007, NALP's report said. The report's finding about almost 25 percent of the Class of 2009 graduates procuring temporary jobs included 69 percent of academic jobs, 41 percent of public interest jobs, 30 percent of business jobs and 8 percent of private practice jobs. "The 69 percent figure [relating to temporary academic jobs] speaks to the strong trend that we saw develop this year with law schools creating employment opportunities for their own graduates," said James G. Leipold, NALP executive director. David N. Yellen, dean of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, said the NALP report "confirms what we all know, which is that this is kind of a historically difficult job market. "There's a lot of unemployment and there's a lot of underemployment," he said. "There are some signs now that hiring is starting to pick up. But even if that continues, it's going to take at least a couple of years to recover." Leipold agreed. "I think the trend for the Class of 2009 will continue for the Class of 2010 and the Class of 2011," Leipold said. "I think the Class of 2012 might be the first class where we might see some loosening up of the job market and a loosening up of these trends." NALP's recent report is based upon information provided by 192 American Bar Association accredited law schools on 96 percent of the graduates of the Class of 2009. The report issued this week supplements a NALP job figures report issued in May. The national median salary for the Class of 2009 who work full time and report a salary was $72,000, the report said. That figure was the same for the graduating Class of 2008. "Basically salaries across the board were flat, which I think we should expect in this environment," Leipold said. For the Class of 2009, 34 percent reported that their salaries ranged from $40,000 to $65,000. "I think for most law school graduates [earning] a lower salary, [that] makes it very difficult to pay down their student loans," Leipold said. Yellen said, "We strongly urge people thinking about law school to think carefully about what their salary is going to be and what their debt load is going to be." The full report, "Jobs & JDs: Employment and Salaries of New Graduates — Class of 2009," is available from NALP. Kyle P. McEntee, who is entering his third year at Vanderbilt University Law School, is a creator of and administrator for lawschooltransparency.com. The website is aimed at increasing the amount of employment information provided by law schools, he said. The information provided by NALP can help prospective law students, McEntee said. "It can help you ask the right questions" when choosing a law school, he said. "But it does not help push forward consumer information about particular law schools." Yellen said that for a committed person, attending law is a good decision. "There are a lot of opportunities and it's a great career," he said. "But people need to go into with their eyes open and law schools need to be candid about the real job outcomes."

4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY

Illinois Paralegal Association
LEARNING TO BE LIKE SNOOPY BY: Caren Mansfield, a member of the Illinois Paralegal Association I was reminded of a valuable lesson today. Now, I have been a paralegal for quite a few years. Actually, I must have only been 13 when I first became a paralegal in order for me to have been in the profession this long and still be only 29. But I digress. I was reminded today that I should not take for granted that the person I am speaking to understands what I am saying. I don’t mean to infer that the person I was speaking to was not intelligent. That is not the case. The individual has a Ph.D. in another field. But that did not mean what I said was understood. As members of the legal profession, paralegals speak every day with lawyers, clerks, court reporters, police, agency professionals, accountants, and other individuals, many of whom have some idea what we are saying. But the general public for the most part has never heard of interrogatories or production or a writ of certiori or res judicata. Shoot, every so often I am asked if I am a notary republic. A person might talk about a living will and a will as if they were the same instrument. What paralegals must remember when working with an individual outside the legal profession in any capacity, whether as a client or not, is that the person might not speak the paralegal language. Perhaps we could look at this subject in a Charlie Brown kinda of way. As a communicator you don’t want to be a Lucy. Didn’t Lucy always yell? Wasn’t she a little brusque and short with everyone, especially Charlie Brown? Schroeder was the know it all. Cultured, refined and head down playing that little piano. Take Linus. Linus was a good kid but had that blanket thing going on. And Charlie Brown, what can I say. But Snoopy was a great communicator. You always knew what Snoopy was feeling and doing even if there was no caption. Well, maybe my recollection of the cartoon strip is a little fuzzy now. But you get my point. A paralegal should be aware of different ways to help a person understand the point of the conversation. Understanding comes not by being a Lucy and pounding the information into the individual’s head or yelling without listening. Don’t lose the person by being a Schroeder and putting the person to sleep. Keep the person’s attention by knowing what you speak about and not hemming and hawing too much like Linus or perhaps Charlie Brown. Working with people of from all different backgrounds and interests requires a paralegal to be able to think on his or her feet and to be able to analyze moments after meeting someone how to speak with them. Now I don’t mean speaking in a patronizing way or speaking down to the person. I mean by taking some time and learning how to best communicate with this person. It is a give and take so a paralegal should ask questions too when communicating. Is communicating rocket science? No. Paralegals know that communicating is a skill. Being open and friendly will help ease a conversation or meeting along. Being empathic can help when asking hard questions. When appropriate, end your conversation by asking if there is anything else the person needs to know. Be a Snoopy and learn to communicate so people understand.
