A Great Past, A Promising Future

Lenexa has come a long way from its early

days as a small town along the Santa Fe Trail! The city is growing faster than ever both commercially and residentially. With a solid leadership team in place, Lenexa has a bright future as a vibrant, modern city that still retains its small town feel to the residents who love it. Johnson County has been one of the strongest economic engines for both the State of Kansas and Greater Kansas City metro area. As Johnson County grew, the population base shifted toward the south and expanded at a rate of 100,000 new residents each decade. Today that population growth has shifted again, this time to the west, and Lenexa is happily welcoming the new residents! For many years residents of Lenexa have enjoyed numerous quality of life amenities the city provides, including safe

and appealing neighborhoods, excellent schools, beautiful parks, quality infrastructure, a strong commercial and employment base, cultural and recreational facilities, volunteer opportunities, and the festivals for which Lenexa is widely known. The Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle, home of the Kansas State Championship, marks the beginning of summer each June, and later the Lenexa Chili Challenge draws thousands to Old Town Lenexa to taste some of the finest chili in the Midwest. Building on this dynamic past, community planning initiatives like Lenexa Vision 2030 aim to ensure Lenexa remains an outstanding place to live, work and play long into the future. The journey Lenexa took from a small farming town on the railroad to what we know today has been marked with foresight and fortitude. Though Lenexa looks much different than it did back when it started, we all can recognize what it has become today: home.

COST OF LIVING
When it comes to the cost of living, Lenexa and the Kansas City area stretch your dollar farther than most communities. With a low cost of living, companies can decrease their cost of doing business and pay better salaries. It also means residents have the chance of home ownership they may not have in other markets.

A Great Place To Live

The Citizens’ Police Academy is designed to educate the community about the structure and activities of our police department, and to give participants the opportunity to meet and interact with officers. Sessions are led by division personnel and most operational units. Topics include: • Patrol procedures • Criminal law • Officer safety • Traffic enforcement • K-9, tactical and investigations units • D.A.R.E. program • Firearms • Crime scene processing and crime prevention • A tour of the Adult Detention Center in Olathe For more information visit the department’s website at www.lenexapd.org.

CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY

The City of Lenexa has a well-trained and professional police department with an outstanding reputation in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Our police department consistently and continuously receives high satisfaction marks for its progressive and professional policing style from the residential and business communities of Lenexa. Pairing technological advances in areas such as communications, investigations and crime reporting with sound policing procedures and tactics, the Lenexa Police Department maintains the high level of proficiency our community has enjoyed for decades. The Lenexa Police Department provides basic and specialized services twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. Specialized units include School Resource and Crime Prevention, and Traffic Safety and Animal Control among others. Lenexa’s officers and staff work in partnership with the community to protect and serve with honor, integrity and professionalism.

SAFETY AND SECURITY TO COUNT ON

The Crime Resistant Community Partnership program fosters a relationship between the Lenexa Police Department and the apartment communities, hotels, storage facilities and rental properties in our city. It allows the property managers and owners to be more informed of what happens on their property and provides them a direct contact at the police department. The CRCP makes Lenexa a better and safer place to live. It not only displaces crime and criminals but it can also prevent crime from ever occurring. The CRCP is staffed by 10 patrol officers who handle this program as a collateral duty in addition to their regular assignments and calls. The Lenexa City Center

The Lenexa City Center is an exciting mixeduse urban development that is being built on all four corners of 87th Street Parkway and Renner Boulevard, in the center of Lenexa. Born out of the community-driven Vision 2020 planning process, Lenexa City Center will serve as a “new downtown” destination area combining a mix of shopping, restaurants, entertainment, office, residential, hotels, and public gathering areas such as parks, plazas, and a civic center all in a pedestrian-friendly, high density, new urbanism development. Uses will be integrated vertically and horizontally in a true live/work environment with a high level of urban design and architectural quality. Likewise, both on-street and structured parking will be built to enhance the urban fabric. Another cornerstone of Lenexa City Center will be vibrant public spaces that will serve as gathering areas for the entire community near what will ultimately be the population center of Lenexa. At full build-out, the 200-acre neighborhood radiating out from the 87th Street/Renner Boulevard intersection west of I-435 is expected to offer about 4.5 million sq. ft. of

mixed-use development, including office space, retail and entertainment space, civic space, hotel rooms, and residential units ranging from single-family row homes to condominiums and apartments. In addition, the Golf Club of Kansas offers its signature semi-private 18-hole golf course just west of the Lenexa City Center neighborhood. Development of the first phase continues. The first residents and office tenants have moved into City Center, and the City has completed improvements to Renner Boulevard as well as a major project to reconstruct 87th Street Parkway into a divided roadway that will allow for mixed-use city blocks between the new east and westbound lanes. In addition, the City has constructed Central Green, a “Rain to Recreation” watershed management project that includes open green space, a series of step pools with waterfalls, and a wetland and trail connection to Shawnee Mission Park. With key infrastructure in place and major announcements expected, Lenexans can look for exciting progress toward the vision of City Center over the next year. To learn more about the project and to follow its progress, please visit the Lenexa City Center website at www. lenexacitycenter.com.

The Lenexa Convention Center

In January 2003, the City of Lenexa proudly opened the doors to the Lenexa Conference Center, located in the renovated Thompson Barn on the Lackman-Thompson Estate. The barn, a historical landmark, has been restored and transformed into a high-tech conference facility, blending the distinctive characteristics of the 70+ year old building with state-of-the-art technology. Since its opening in 2003, the conference center has become a popular venue for business meetings, teleconferences, social events such as weddings, rehearsal dinners and receptions as well as family reunions. A concierge is on site for all events to assist guests with all of their needs. The conference center includes a main meeting area which can be set up in a variety of configurations featuring a drop down media screen and three smaller meeting rooms on the lower level that are as high-tech as the main room. A beautiful atrium is available for groups as well as an outdoor brick patio. Guests may choose from the center’s list of catering partners or use the caterer of their choice. The conference center is committed to providing quality customer service, a pleasant and unique atmosphere and a knowledgeable and professional staff, all at a reasonable cost. THE HISTORIC LACKMANTHOMPSON ESTATE
The historic Lackman-Thompson Estate was built in 1887 by German immigrants Margaretha and William Lackman. The Lackmans employed European artisans and craftsmen to complete the many intricate details of the home including hand-painted ceilings and light fixtures, plaster designs and carved woodwork. The home’s staircase was made from walnut tree wood grown on the estate. The Lackmans were involved with development of the local railroad system. When two of their employees stole $40,000 from the company, the family was forced to sell the home. In the end, its contents and surrounding land was sold for $32,000 to Frank Thompson. Frank Thompson, along with his wife and son Hugh, sold horses and mules nationwide and shipped them via the railroad the Lackmans helped create. The Thompsons added the red brick barn which today serves as the Lenexa Conference Center. When Frank Thompson died, he left the house to his son Hugh who was married and raised six children in the home. In the mid 1980’s Hugh Thompson moved out of the home and bequeathed the estate and land to the JCCC Community Foundation, which in turn sold the home to the City of Lenexa. In 1992 the house became the first structure in Lenexa to be named on the Register of Historic Kansas Places. The home includes many features restored to their original beauty as well as several outbuildings. The estate is home to the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce, the Lenexa Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Lenexa Economic Development Council.

History

In 1854 members of the Shawnee Tribe

owned the site which was to become Lenexa. Each man, woman and child in the local tribe had been allotted 200 acres, and those lands could not be sold without the permission of the President of the United States. In that same year, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, creating the Kansas Territory and opening the area to settlers. None of the land that would become Lenexa was available for settlement, however, for the above-mentioned reason. Following the Kansas- Nebraska Act, long years of political strife began. According to legend, Lenexa is derived from the name of Shawnee Chief Thomas Blackhoof’s wife, who was variously recorded on census records as Na-Nex-Se and Len-Ag-See. By 1870 Na-Nex-Se was no longer listed on any Johnson County census and is presumed to have died by that date. Lenexa finally found its genesis after the Civil War, during a period of land speculation and railroad construction that followed the final census of the Shawnee and their lands. By 1867, Charles A. Bradshaw had purchased 160 acres of former Shawnee lands because many Shawnee were anxious to sell their lands and move to the Oklahoma Indian Territories. Agents for the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad negotiated with Bradshaw for railroad right-of-way. Bradshaw agreed on condition that the railroad would maintain a depot on the land. In 1869, Bradshaw sold 41.5 acres near the railroad right-of-way to Octave Chanute, a civil engineer, who platted the town of Lenexa. On August 26, 1869, Chanute sold the property to three men from Jackson County, Missouri.

LENEXA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Thus, Lenexa was born in 1869 and the post office established at Sherman in 1865 was moved to a site near the railroad depot and was called the Lenexa post office. It was not incorporated, however, until May 8, 1907. Many German, Swiss and Belgian families came to the area from the East and from Europe. They purchased lands from the Shawnee and grew bumper crops in the fertile soil. In the 1930s, Lenexa became famous for its superior quality spinach. Over 150 truck farmers contributed to the trainloads of produce, spinach included, which was shipped to Chicago and other eastern markets. To the Lenexan of today, the rich heritage of Lenexa’s past is important and a renewed interest in preserving the oldest and most viable buildings and residences is evident. Today’s Lenexa is a well rounded community, where over 100,000 people are employed in manufacturing, distribution, retail and professional occupations.

The many flavors of Lenexa festivals offer a taste for everyone! Lenexa’s major festivals are held annually and welcome visitors from far and wide.

Fe s tiva ls a nd Eve nt s

The Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle started in 1982 with twelve contestants and twelve judges. On April 27, 1984, Governor John Carlin declared the contest the official Kansas State Championship. The contest has grown to its current size of approximately 200 contestants and 240 judges. The contest is always held on the fourth Saturday of June each year. The contest is held at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park (87th & Lackman Road) and attracts cookers from all over the country who compete over two days for the coveted title of Grand Champion. This two day event includes children’s activities, live music and, of course, barbeque, barbeque and more barbeque! The fun begins on Friday as the teams begin arriving with some of the most unique smoking contraptions imaginable. They bring with them secret recipes that they hope will help aid them in winning the contest. As the teams prepare their cooking sites the park comes alive with entertainment and live music. The real contest begins Saturday as the judging tent buzzes with activity preparing for the first barbeque samples to arrive around noon. Two hundred forty judges have the hard task of

The Spinach Festival rolls all of the history surrounding Lenexa into a fun celebration! Explore this period of Lenexa’s history during this familyfriendly event which includes fine arts and crafts booths offering primitive, vintage and antique items for sale.

The Chili Challenge is held each year in charming Old Town Lenexa. One hundred teams compete in two divisions: Competition (C.A.S.I.) Chili and Home Style Chili. Two additional divisions include Salsa and Hot Wings. There is plenty of chili to sample, as well as games, music, and live entertainment. Proceeds from the Chili Challenge help benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
