‘Referendum to be considered’
The results of a New Year’s Day ‘referendum’ organized by Occupy Central will be
considered in formulating electoral form. Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen Kwokkeung said.
It is to some extent – a platform for citizens to express their views. Yuen said. He
stressed that any proposal must be in line with the Basic Law and the decision of
the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
“In the five-month consultation, we hope to listen to more opinions. We are
concerned about the opinions, however they are expressed,” Yuen said.
Asked if he will take reference from the results of the so-called referendum. Yuen
said that the government would consider every opinion.
Occupy Central organizers commissioned academics at the University of Hong
Kong and Polytechnic University to set up a website. It will ask the public three
questions on universal suffrage. The government continues its consultation,
launched on December 4, for voting procedures in the 2017 chief executive and
2016 legislative elections.
Pollsters will ask whether the nominating committee to pick chief executive
candidates should be made more representative; whether candidates are to be
“pre-screened” and whether the public should nominate candidates.
