borrowed on Friday or Saturday after 5pm. Please be aware that fines for overdue Short Loan books are set at £0.50 per hour. We have changed the system to make these high demand books easier for more people to borrow and to make the system fairer.

New Resources
Open Access publication funds
The Central and Eastern European Online Library (C.E.E.O.L) You can now access thousands of articles from social science and humanities journals covering topics on Central, Eastern and SouthEastern Europe using the Central and Eastern European Online Library. See our @the library blog for more info. There have been several high profile developments in recent months which point to an open access future for scholarly publishing. The University Library is now in receipt of funds which will allow us to investigate a range of open access options, seek feedback from our academic community and prepare for the transition towards open access. The Library is in the process of communicating the plan for use of these funds with Directors of Research in all Schools. To find out if you can make your article open access, contact [email protected]. There will be further funds available from April 2013, which will allow us to implement the new RCUK policy on open access and pay for 'Gold' open access for RCUK-funded outputs. More information about OA and funder policies will be available on Library web pages: http://www.standrews.ac.uk/library/information/furtherhelp/openaccess/ -Jackie Proven Repository Support Officer We will use this section to highlight a resource that, although not necessarily new, can offer access to exciting or very useful information. This month we have chosen Credo Reference. Through Credo Reference you can access information on just about any topic, including the Economic Benefits and Cultural Aspects of Volcanism and The Meaning of Life!

Subject Guides We have created and regularly update guides for academic subjects and general Library help. New guides include: Modern Languages - general resources Introduction to the Library for new students Useful general guides include: Dictionaries The main church space will become a Research Reading Room, for use by Postgraduate Research students and academic staff. There will be a reference collection within the church, and a number of journals for Arts researchers. We will use the adjoining Church Hall as a Special Collections Reading Room, replacing the current temporary Reading Room at the Library Annexe on the North Haugh. Our longer term plans for Special Collections are for the whole facility to be provided under one roof in a redevelopment of the semi-basement Ground Floor of the Main Library. The Martyrs' Church Hall will however provide a very pleasant temporary Special Collections Reading Room while planning and building work on the Main Library proceeds. -John MacColl University Librarian Open Access Referencing Software Remote Access to Online Resources Visit our Subject Guides page to view all of our guides.

The University purchased the Martyrs' Church in North Street from the Church of Scotland last summer. The church will give us additional Library reading rooms. Planning is underway to refurbish the building and open it for use later this year.

J M Barrie inscription found

Front cover of The Flying Carpet (1925) and the inscription from J.M. Barrie on the front fly-leaf (St Andrews copy at Chi PZ7.A843F6) with

kind permission from Daryl Green and Christine Megowan. The inscription appears on a copy of The Flying Carpet (London: Partridge & Co., 1925), an anthology of stories and poems for children. This beautifully illustrated volume includes contributions by Thomas Hardy, G. K. Chesterton, A. A. Milne, and others. Barrie's contribution is a short story entitled, "Neil and Tintinnabulum." The April 1926 issue of The Elementary English Review (via JSTOR) had this to say about the anthology: "The outstanding story is Barrie's 'Neil and Tintinnabulum.' Boys who enjoy 'Stalky and Co.' will like it, but it is really for grown-ups. In fact, the author calls it 'An Interlude for Parents' ... It will bear reading and re-reading just now when we parents are too prone to give our children so much direction and guidance in school, clubs, camps, and special lessons that they have no time to 'just grow.'" More information about the book and the inscription can be found in the Special Collections blog Echoes from the Vault. -Christine Megowan Rare Books Cataloguer

Finding your way
We have created plans and displayed new signs in the Library to make it easier for you to find your way.

Floor plans of each of the levels are available to download online and on levels 3 and 4 we have large plans fixed to the orientation wall (shown in the above image).

We have also added signs to the ends of each of the shelves on levels 3 and 4 to show what subjects and classmarks you can find in each row of shelves.
