Warfield Gymnasium at Naval
Base Ventura County (NBVC),
Port Hueneme, will close in Janu-
ary for a nine-month renova-
tion.
Whencompleted, the men’s and
women’s locker rooms and show-
ers will be at the other end of the
building — eliminating the need
to traipse through the basketball
court —and a 20-foot-wide mez-
zanine with cardio equipment will
run the length of the weight
room.
Heating, ventilation, lighting
and electrical systems will also be
improved.
“This project will result in a
short-term inconvenience, but in
the long run, it will improve the
services and programs we are able
to provide,” said Fred Morgan,
Morale, Welfare and Recreation
(MWR) director.

A message as we approach the holiday season
We’re getting closer to that busy time of year
when it’s easy to get caught up in the rush. As
we’re running around buying food and presents,
fighting crowds and battling holiday traffic, we
sometimes forget about the things that really do
count: courtesy, thoughtfulness and kindness.
I recently received this letter that I wanted to
share as a reminder of the importance of slow-
ing down and taking the time to do something
that can make a difference:
“Recently I was in the NEX looking to
purchase a laptop computer, and being 84-
plus years of age, I know little about this cyber
world. I happened to ask a young gentleman
who is in the military if he might give me a hand
as to what I should be looking for in a laptop.
“This young man spent about 45 minutes
of his time guiding me in what to look for to
meet my needs, as well as providing me with
several makes of computers to look at.
Needless to say, I was very grateful for
this young man’s help. He was a very respect-
ful and well-mannered young man, certainly
a credit to his parents and to the U.S. Navy.”
This year, let us all take the time to lend a
helping hand, to make someone else’s life a
little easier, to treat others they way we want
to be treated.
Enjoy the holidays everyone, and stay
safe. w

More than 850 federal em-
ployees got their cholesterol
levels checked and their blood
pressure taken during free
health fairs on Wednesday and
Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3, at Na-
val Base Ventura County
(NBVC).
The health fairs were a pre-
lude to the 2011 Federal Ben-
efits Open Season, which runs
through Dec. 12. Open season
is when federal employees can
change their health insurance
providers or amend their cur-
rent coverage.
“This was a chance for peo-
ple to get some information so
they can make good decisions
about their health insurance
and health needs,” said Jessica
Nunez, who works in the Naval
Air Systems Command human
resources office at NBVCPoint
Mugu.
Wednesday’s health fair was
at Bldg. 366 at Point Mugu;
Thursday’s was at the Fleet &
Family Support Center, NBVC
Port Hueneme.
In addition to the free screen-
ings, the fairs offered federal
employees a chance to talk with
representatives of companies
that provide health plans and
businesses that offer health-re-
lated products and services.
In all, there were 18 stations,
ranging from a sleep lab to a
chiropractor to shoe fittings.
“I came today to find out
about all the different options
— what changes are taking
place with my company and
who else is offering what — so
I can get the best return on my
dollar,” said Will Ray, a con-
tract manager with the Naval
Air Warfare Center-Weapons
Division at Point Mugu.
Ray also got a free massage,
courtesy of Sophia Brown, a
massage therapist for Morale,
Welfare and Recreation who
works out of the Warfield Gym
at Port Hueneme.
Brown’s was a popular sta-
tion at Point Mugu.
“It’s been busy,” she said.
Nunez said two more health
fairs are being planned for
June.

Several events over the long Veterans
Day weekend featured speakers from Na-
val Base Ventura County (NBVC).
Capt. David Sasek, chief staff officer at
NBVC, spoke of family sacrifices to the
nearly 400 members of the military and
their families who attended the 7th An-
nual Military Family Appreciation Day
on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Commemora-
tive Air Force World War II Museum in
Camarillo.
On Veterans Day, Chief Equipment
Operator (SCW) Deanna Robison of Na-
val Mobile Construction Battalion
(NMCB) 3 spoke to the Santa Paula Vet-
erans of Foreign Wars Post 2043 at the
Veterans Park in Santa Paula and later in
the afternoon at the State of California
Veterans Home in Ventura.
Also speaking at a Veterans Day com-
memoration was Capt. Bruce Nevel, chief
staff officer of the Naval Facilities Expe-
ditionary Logistics Center. He was one of
several speakers at the 17th annual Veter-
ans Day celebration in Oxnard’s Plaza

So there I was in San Diego, preparing
for a speaking engagement at a Family
Readiness Group meeting, when the lights
went out — along with all the power. I
thought it would return momentarily. It
did not. So being the enterprising Navy
wife, I took my hair dryer and curling iron
to my car to finish my “primping.” The
power still did not return.
I started off to the location of the meet-
ing, only to find myself in a sea of cars
going nowhere. Street lights were out, cars
were running out of gas. It was an interest-
ing situation.
In recent months the country has expe-
rienced wildfires, tornadoes, hurricanes
and, of course, the great blackout in
Southern California. While the power was
off for only 14 to 24 hours, the impact was
interesting — and awakening.
Quick: How much gas in is your car
right now? If the power went out right
now, what food do you have that you can
prepare if it remains out for a day or two?
How much cash do you have access to if
the ATMs are out? If you need to evacu-
ate in the next hour, what do you have
ready to grab and head out the door? What
is essential that you take with you?
At first, the power outage in San Diego
was headline news and an inconvenience
— but not a huge one. However, within
hours, the handful of stores that could
remain open — cash only — were quick-
ly drained of ice, batteries and candles.
Cars were abandoned along the freeways
as they ran out of gas. Why? Gas tanks
were low and gas stations, without power,
cannot pump gas.
Several years ago I developed a disaster
kit. My husband told me how happy he
was that I did. He and my dogs did great
during the outage. They were prepared
with food, emergency supplies and didn’t
have to go out into the fray.
So: How much gas is in your car at this
moment? Experts recommend never let-
ting your tank get below 50 percent. Do
you have food in your pantry that can be-
come emergency meals — prepped with-
out power and perhaps without water? Do
you have an emergency kit of batteries,
candles, water, a little cash and meds?
As military families, we know it takes
time to mobilize a ship, a squadron, a unit.
Likewise, it takes time to mobilize emer-
gency response efforts. So it is up to us to
have a plan, and that plan should carry
us for a minimum of three days.
As Navy families, we have a resource,
Operation Prepare, and NFAAS (Navy
Family Accountability and Assessment
System) to help us in an emergency. Get
your family involved and become the most
prepared family on your block.
Go to the American Red Cross site at
www.redcross.org, and check out www.
ready.gov to begin your disaster plan.

Young and old, very few would argue
that Facebook has its benefits. The ease
of “connecting” with individuals, orga-
nizations and businesses is immeasurably
valuable. Now, even your local School
Liaison Office (SLO) has joined Face-
book.
The next time you log on to Facebook,
please search for “NBVC School Liai-
son.” Simply click “like,” and you will
have access to regular education updates
and important connections. Resources,
scholarship information, connecting to
other installation school liaisons, local
school information and recent education
legislation will be just some of the ben-
efits of “liking” the “NBVC School Li-
aison” page.
Resources
The NBVC School Liaison Facebook
page will provide regular updates of re-
sources that are available to military
families. Fromonline tutoring to military
teen websites, resources are out there for
military families, but letting the families
know about these resources is not always
easy. SLOs can now post these resources
as soon as they become aware of them,
reaching more families in a timely man-
ner.
Scholarships
College scholarships are available to
dependents of military family members.
Getting the word out to the dependents
is usually a hard task for many of the
organizations that offer the scholarships.
As an SLO, I have heard from many
scholarship organizations that they re-
ceive very few applicants. This can only
be due to the fact that college-bound stu-
dents are not aware of them. Scholarship
opportunities, essay contests, etc. will be
posted regularly.
Local school information
As local schools have announcements
and important information to share that
will be valuable to a number of our mil-
itary families, this information will also
be shared on the Facebook site. Registra-
tion dates and transfer request deadlines
often come sooner than most expect.
“Liking”the NBVCSchool Liaison Face-
book page will ensure you will have the
information you need when you need
it.
Connecting to other liaisons
As school liaisons at other Navy instal-
lations create their Facebook pages, they
will be shared as “liked” pages on the
NBVC School Liaison page. This will al-
low an outgoing NBVC family to locate
a school liaison at their new installation,
gain access to local information, view
pictures of events and the local area and
connect with families at the installa-
tion.
Education legislation
On a local, state and federal level,
awareness of the issues concerning mili-
tary students is coming to the forefront
of legislative decisions. Being aware of
these decisions will empower parents to
advocate on behalf of their children.
As the NBVCSchool Liaison page rolls
out, please share it with educators and
military family friends who might also
be interested. Please also email the NBVC
School Liaison with any ideas, resources
or announcements that would be benefi-
cial to military-connected students. As
permissible within guidelines, your ideas
and resources will also be shared.
Correction: In the Nov. 3 “School con-
nection” column, California Assembly
Bill 387 was discussed. The article stated,
“Schools will receive the average daily
attendance for the student…” However,
AB 387 does not provide this benefit to
the schools. Students must be present for
the school to count the student towards
their average daily attendance. An ex-
cused or unexcused absence is still an
absence in regards to school funding.
— For any K-12 education-related questions,
please call the NBVC school liaison at 989-

My brother Terry is a soccer coach
for his daughters. The older daughter
plays on a 10-years-and-under team,
while the younger plays on an under-8
team.
During their season, my brother and
I will talk frequently about how my
nieces are doing in their weekly games.
In the end, I always ask if they are still
having a good time playing the game.
He and I played on a competitive soccer
league through high school, so we know
how much time, energy and pressure
can arise from such athletic involve-
ments.
A few weeks ago my brother shared
some horror stories that occurred in
their soccer leagues. Typically, the ma-
jor problems stem from parents whose
antics range from yelling on the field
to pressuring coaches to take out the
weaker players and put their own kids
in during “game clutch situations.” Be-
lieve it or not, this is a frequent problem
even for the under-8 girls team!
Unfortunately, we are all familiar
with the sad sports clichés involving the
former jock moms and dads who were
frustrated benchwarmers during their
sports careers and who are still trying
to live vicariously through their chil-
dren’s achievements.
I saw a sports documentary that stat-
ed 99.9 percent of the kids you see on
the basketball courts and baseball and
football fields will never make it to the
professional level.
I do know, however, that 100 percent
of these same children can and will
eventually do very well in later life and
enjoy their professional lives as doctors,
carpenters, school teachers, police of-
ficers and so on.
As important as winning is, as sports
psychologists tell us, it is equally criti-
cal for these youngsters to learn about
other important life aspects of playing
sports. Some of the top benefits include
experiencing first-hand the benefits of
living a healthy physical lifestyle; the
importance of team work and person-
al goal setting skills; and learning how
to handle victory as well as how to
bounce back from defeat.
I meet adults all the time who tell me
how their kids are growing up so quick-
ly and how, in many ways, it is much
harder to grow up today. I don’t live in
a bubble, so I know that far too quick-
ly every little boy and girl will find out
just how competitive a “dog eat dog”
life can be: getting accepted to a good
school, competing for grades, or fight-
ing for that job or promotion in a tough
economy. Soon enough, they will grow
up and experience all the things we do

Capt. Thomas J. Brovarone
relieved Capt. Mary E. Dexter as
commanding officer of the Engi-
neering Duty Officer School dur-
ing an Oct. 21 ceremony at Naval
Base Ventura County, Port Hue-
neme.
In conjunction with the change
of command, Dexter also held
her retirement ceremony celebrat-
ing 27 years of service.
The guest speaker, Rear Adm.
Clarke Orzalli, Vice Commander,
Naval Sea Systems Command,
commented on Dexter’s tenure
as commanding officer.
“It is because of you that the
ED School is a ‘well functioning
machine’ and your claim to fame
still stands —you haven’t broken
anything,” he said. “You did
much more, not just for the En-
gineering Duty Officer School,
but also the local community.”
Orzalli gave this guidance to
Brovarone as incoming com-
manding officer:
“You are about to assume the
watch,” he said. “With your ac-
quisition and operational experi-
ence, I look forward to your dy-
namic leadership in taking the
ED School to new heights — de-
livering cutting-edge education
and training in science and engi-
neering to our 21st century warf-
ighters!”
Orzalli said the EDO team has
the honor of building and sus-
taining the greatest Navy the
world has ever seen.
“It is not an honor that just
anyone can have,” he said. “We
indeed are the fortunate few. So
as we continue to build the Navy’s
21st century fleet, we must do so
with integrity, responsiveness, ac-
countability and with the highest
degree of technical excellence.”
Dexter assumed command of
the EDOSchool in October 2009
and led the command with a stra-
tegic focus on the Chief of Naval
Operations’ new maritime strat-
egy and a commitment to train-
ing naval officers in the design,
acquisition, maintenance and
modernization of Navy ships and
ship systems.
Dexter was awarded a Legion
of Merit during the ceremony for
her service to the nation and the
Navy.
Some of Dexter’s career-cul-
minating remarks included com-
ments to the EDO staff, the
students and career mentor-
ship.
“The EDO School staff mem-
bers are all professional at what
they do,” Dexter said. “They
know what needs to be done and
they get it done.”
Addressing the students, she
said, “You are all exceptional
talents ... and I am quite com-
fortable retiring, knowing that
the future is in your hands. Re-
gardless of what the future holds
in terms of budget cuts, and the
effect on the Navy ... remember
what Clint Eastwood said in
‘Heartbreak Ridge’: Adapt and
overcome.
“I know you will find the right
answers to keep the United
States Navy the most powerful
on Earth. Support each other
and look out for those who fol-
low you, and the future of the
ED community will be secure.”

Thomas J. Brovarone, looks on.

By Andrea Howry
Lighthouse editor
Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC)
was awarded five certificates of merit for
its 2011 motorcycle training courses, near-
ly as many as it has received overall since
2004.
The five certificates of merit were from
the California Motorcycle Safety Program,
which is sponsored by the California High-
way Patrol in coordination with the Mo-
torcycle Safety Foundation.
Before this year, the base had received a
total of seven certificates of merit since
2004.
“We’ve been doing this for a long time,
and the success of the program shows,”
said George Egeler, safety manager for the
base. “We’ve got the best motorcycle train-
ing site in the country, and we have a lot
of staff members who have gone through
that training. All our instructors are not
only qualified, they’re the best in the
area.”
Egeler estimates that in the past year,
500 people have taken the training, which
is offered at both NBVCPoint Mugu and
Port Hueneme. Active-duty military per-
sonnel and Reservists fromthroughout the
Greater Los Angeles area —including Seal
Beach and Corona — attend the NBVC
classes. Otherwise, the nearest classes are
at Camp Pendleton and Naval Air Station
Lemoore.
Retirees and dependents can attend for
free on a space-available basis.
Basic rider courses are offered every
week at Point Mugu. Sport bike rider
courses are every other Tuesday at Port
Hueneme. Experienced rider courses are
every other Tuesday at Point Mugu.
Cape Fox Professional Services is the
service provider contracted with the U.S.
Navy and U.S. Marine Corps to put on
the classes.
All motorcycle riders take the basic
course, and many will then take the expe-
rienced course, he said.
Egeler said he can’t stress enough the
importance of the training sessions, espe-
cially in Southern California where people
ride all year long, where freeway traffic is
heavy and where motorcycle use is high.
He said the biggest violation he sees de-
pends on the type of bike the rider has.
“For sport bike riders, it’s speed,” he
said. “For basic riders, it’s the lack of ad-
equate gear.”
The Oct. 8 certificates of merit were
given for:
• 100 percent compliance at NBVCPoint
Mugu, meaning that every licensed mo-
torcycle rider on base had taken the basic
course.
• 100 percent compliance at NBVCPort
Hueneme.
• Exceeds standards of range safety at
NBVC Port Hueneme.
• Exceeds standards of rider coaches
— in other words, instructor excellence
— at NBVC Port Hueneme.
• Exceeds standards of rider demonstra-
tions at NBVC Port Hueneme.
To sign up for a class, send an e-mail to
[email protected] or register
through www.navymotorcyclerider.com.

“This is great for both the school and our
military folks,” Capt. Jim McHugh, com-

Point Mugu. “We’ll be able to give back to
the community with the resources and skill
sets that we have. We’ll be able to help with
projects and at the same time let students
knowwhat it’s like to be in the Navy. This is
a wonderful partnership, and I’m looking
forward to keeping it going for a long
time.”
E.O. Green Principal Julianne Peña said
she looks forward to both the practical and
creative benefits the partnership promises,
from Saturday painting and beautification
efforts to Wednesday clay projects and bas-
ketball games.
“Welookforwardtothegood, strongadult
role models the Navy will be providing,”she
said. “The character development and posi-
tive behavioral support the Navy will bring
will help both the social climate and general
well-being of the school.”
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 who live
aboard NBVC Port Hueneme attend E.O.

NMCB 40 Public Affairs
The long-awaited running track and fit-
ness trail at Naval Base Ventura County
(NBVC), Point Mugu, is finished thanks
to the concentrated effort of Naval Mobile
Construction Battalion (NMCB) 40 to fin-
ish the job before deploying this month.
“We’re especially thankful to NMCB40
for tackling this challenge,” Capt. Jim
McHugh, commanding officer, NBVC,
said at the Friday, Nov. 4, ribbon-cutting
ceremony, held just hours before 40’s Sea-
bees took off for their Pacific Command
deployment.
Local Sailors as well as participants
from the Navy and Coast Guard Wound-
ed Warrior program participated in the
ceremony with a commemorative lap
around the new facility. The ceremony
concluded with two local Seabees sprint-
ing to the finish line and running through
a ribbon.
The 800-meter (half-mile) loop is unique
in that it has a 400-meter (quarter-mile)
loop within it. Runners and walkers can
choose to do a half mile or break off and
do a quarter mile instead.
The eight-acre area encompassing the
track and its surroundings had fallen into
disrepair long ago. Work began in 2009
to restore the site, but the project hit snags
almost immediately with battalion sched-
uling conflicts and concerns about the
nearby wetlands. Determined to finish the
project, NMCB 40 Seabees worked dili-
gently during the battalion’s homeport.
“The completion of this project is due
solely to the outstanding group of people
I had the pleasure to lead,” said Builder
2nd Class Aaron Bailey. “I am proud to
have had the opportunity to work with
these folks, and I am thankful for all of
their hard work and determination.”
The project included designing and
grading the track, placing concrete curb-
ing around it, constructing drains and
culverts for water control and installing
10 exercise stations around the track area
with the intention of adding more in the
future.
“These guys accomplished a lot,” said
Senior Chief Utilitiesman Fredrick Mar-
tinez, NMCB 40 operations chief. “What
they did was nothing short of commend-
able. This track will pay huge dividends
for the Sailors of Naval Base Ventura
County for years to come.”

tura County (NBVC), Port Hueneme, to
compare fuel consumption and perfor-
mance with older, less energy-efficient
legacy military bulldozers.
The testing was designed to create an
accurate, comparative baseline evaluation
of legacy equipment, identifying limita-
tions of potential improvements to bull-
dozer operations while gauging the pro-
ductivity impact of the new diesel electric
propulsion and automatic blade control
systems.
Testing was also designed to measure
the possible energy savings that may be
delivered if this equipment is selected for
use by Amphibious and Expeditionary
Forces worldwide.
“The Department of Defense is review-
ing their budget to achieve significant cost
savings across the board,”said Capt. Brant
D. Pickrell, commanding officer of the
Naval Facilities Engineering Service Cen-
ter (NAVFAC ESC). “The Navy is doing
their part by looking at ways to cut costs
without affecting the mission. Saving en-
ergy-related costs are a huge component
of that effort, and we believe this technol-
ogy will help us reach the Navy Task Force
Energy-Expeditionary goals of reducing
deployed fuel consumption and increasing
fuel efficiency by 15 percent by the year
2020.”
These goals, he said, support the energy
vision set forth by the Secretary of the
Navy.
The project is the result of a partnering
effort by the U.S. Army’s Tank Automo-
tive Research, Development and Engineer-
ing Center (TARDEC) to use the training
facility at NBVC, which offers a consistent
climate favorable to the testing.
The effort is supported by personnel
from the NAVFAC ESC, the 1st Naval
Construction Division (1NCD), the 31st
Seabee Readiness Group (31st SRG) and
private industry.
The 31st SRG of the 1NCD contrib-
uted experienced equipment operators to
support the tests and gained knowledge
and experience with the newdiesel electric
technology in reducing energy consump-
tion of heavy construction equipment.
1NCD oversees about 16,000 Navy Sea-
bees, who provide a wide range of military
construction and humanitarian assistance
worldwide.
The diesel electric bulldozer, as tested,
is equipped with a digital guidance system
for automatic dozer blade control, allow-
ing operators to achieve better grading
accuracy without the use of survey stakes.
The diesel electric bulldozer does not have
a power storage battery pack, transmission
or torque converter. It uses a diesel gen-
erator to generate electricity to power two
electric motors, which in turn drive the
two tracks.
Participation in this comparison test
enables the Navy to assess new, promising
technologies to reduce the fuel consump-
tion of expeditionary construction equip-
ment used by the Seabees in deployment
and training. Navy and Army engineers
believe the test results fromthe diesel elec-
tric dozer will ultimately show a notable
reduction in fuel consumption and lower
overall operating costs.

about 11,000 visits every month.
The gym’s cardio and weight rooms and
the racquetball courts will close on Jan.
3. The basketball court and locker rooms
will stay open through Jan. 12, with Jan.
13 being the last day to clear out lock-
ers.
On Jan. 14, Warfield will host the All-
Navy Box-Off from 7 to 9:30 p.m., after
which the gym will be shut down. Con-
struction is set to begin Jan. 18.
“We thought about phasing in the con-
struction and keeping different parts of
the gym open,” said Glenn Brunelle, the
Public Works Department’s facility man-
agement specialist working with MWR
projects. “But there’s going to be a lot of
dust in the air, a lot of plastic on the
ground, and the project can be completed
a lot sooner if the gym is completely shut
down during construction.”
Plans call for construction to be finished
in late September, with the gymreopening
soon afterwards after all the equipment is
re-installed.
MWR is redirecting Warfield patrons
to the Mugu Gymand Fitness Center, the
Bee-Hive Gym and the Bee-Fit Wellness
Center. While the Bee-Fit does not have
locker rooms, the Seabreeze Aquatics Cen-
ter across the street does.
Hours will change at those facilities to
accommodate more people.
Morgan said the first few days after the
gymshuts down will be the most challeng-
ing because it’s one of the busiest times
for MWRfacilities. The Navy’s top boxers
will be training on base from Dec. 18
through the Jan. 14 box-off, and another
Navy and Coast Guard wounded warrior
training camp is set for Jan. 12-16.
Brunelle asked for patience.
“When this is all done, the Warfield will
be a much better facility — something
that’s long overdue,” he said.
When finished, the showers and locker
rooms will have switched sides with the
racquetball courts.
“This will save on the wear and tear of
the woodenfloors onthe basketball court,”
Brunelle said. “Right now, anyone want-
ing to use the locker room facility or the
restrooms needs to walk through the bas-
ketball court.”
The women’s locker roomwill be slight-
ly larger than today’s facility.
Gym will close in January for remodel

At Military Appreciation
Day, Sasek thanked the many
family members present for the
sacrifices they make while a
loved one serves the United
States.
“We know what our families
go through when we’re gone,”
he said. “Spouses and children
have to pick up the load.”
He himself missed his son’s
birth and didn’t even meet the
boy until he was 4 months
old.
“We all sacrifice something,”
he said. “We all give up some-
thing.”
The free event was presented
by the offices of State Sen. Tony
Strickland and Assemblyman
Jeff Gorell, who did not attend
because he is deployed with the
Navy Reserves, and by Military-
Families.org.
By registering in advance,
members of the military could
pick up a packet of certificates
thanking them for their service.
Documents from Strickland and
Gorell, as well as a certificate
from the Ventura County Board
of Supervisors, were in the
packet.
During her Veterans Day
talks, Robison also discussed
sacrifice.
“Every veteran, whether they
chose to join or were made to
join, made sacrifices for our
country,” said Robison during
both of the ceremonies. “I thank
you for all of what you have
done for this great country.”
Robison also thanked her
family for their support and
said that being in the military
is part of her heritage, as more
than 10 members of her family
have served in conflicts from
Korea to today.
Nevel pointed out that there
are more than 27 million living
American veterans and another
57 million family members and
survivors of veterans.
“Almost one in every three
Americans is either a veteran or
a member of a veteran’s family,”
he told the Oxnard crowd.
