Editorial Exhaust
Alright, Solo-II has started! While the day of our first event started cold, the sun eventually came out and warmed up everyone, including the large crowd of spectators. Hazards included standing water, and more sand than we could sweep. The wind was strong too, but that mostly effected people between runs, in the form of windburnt faces. Jetform Park is the location for this year's Solo-II and our 2 Performance Ground Schools. We just had our first, and the weather was much better than the first Solo-II event. We had 16 very enthusiastic drivers, some coming all the way from Montreal for our school. Also happening in these past few weeks was Spring Fling at Shannonville Motorsport Park. While there were a selection of the usual MCO crews there doing testing, a handful of MCO members (including myself and our treasurer Bob Benson) also took the marshall's course. Personally, I'm not sure which was more fun, doing actual flagging down in the final turn before the back straight (turn 10?), or fully unloading a 10-pound fire bottle into a gas fire. I'm really looking forward to being able to apply the training (well, not the fire bit) this summer, starting with the Canaska Cup in July. -r.

PTK Racing
Press Release:April 10, 2001 For Immediate Distribution

Paul Tracy Karting International Signs Local Racer
Paul Tracy Karting International [PTKI] has signed 20 year old Graham Hine of Almonte, Ontario as team driver in the K1 [80cc] class on this year's SKUSA [Superkarts! USA] North American Pro Moto Series which begins April 26-29 in Jacksonville Florida. "Graham has been very quick in his first season of shifter competition and we are delighted to have him on the team" said Canadian Champ Car ace Paul Tracy. Marc Zartarian, manager of PTKI added, "We have been very impressed with Graham's performance in Florida this winter, and we expect his winning ways to continue with us". Graham has been turning heads on the SKUSA Florida Winter Tour where he has an unassailable lead in the championship with one race to go. In four races he has three wins and a third. He will be crowned champion April 21/22 at Jacksonville, which will be a good warm up for his first Pro Moto race the following weekend. The Pro Moto Series will wind up with the World Championships in Oklahoma, September 20-23. For the past three years Graham has been a team member of PTK Racing, gaining experience in NCKC races at Karters Korners, Quyon and Cracow, and in Québec at the Coupe de Montréal. In 2000 he also did a number of races at St. Lawrence Motor Sports Park [SLMP], Morristown, NY. The first two years with PTK were times for development and were marked by many "offs" [remember the Quyon Enduro Ron?], black flags, and a number of wins. During this time he was a team mate of MCO member Noah Watson and the competition between the two was fierce but friendly. The two did a lot of testing together, sharing information, learning how to drive at the razor's edge, all the time honing their skills and driving the wheels off their machines in races. Their style was a little too aggressive for the local club, but elsewhere they were recognized as having lots of talent. Never content to languish in the middle of the pack, the lack of a competitive motor and the money to get one caused Noah to focus on other things - like earning a living. He is now in Calgary with FedEx. Solo II Improvements and First Solo II Event
by Rob Microys
For those who have been at our first Solo II event already this year, you will have noticed a new updated timing system. The current system of laptops, beams, black boxes, cabling, and other gizmos has been updated to be more robust and 'almost' monkey proof! The system was recabled, and installed in to an aluminum carry case. With help from Steve Bettles, a panel was fabricated for mounting all the connector receptacles. I completed the remaining wiring and installation of the laptop. The cabling was also updated with new cable, and all connectors interfacing the lights and timing black box/laptop have been upgraded to higher quality connectors that should last us a few trouble free years. Everything was tested and works great. The primary concern was to remove the previous system's 'spaghetti-style' of wiring. There used wires, dc-ac power inverters, power bars and extension cords going everywhere - the new system has been reduced to only three connectors one to the battery and two to the timing light receivers, which makes morning setup and tear-down very simple and easy. The new timing system operated almost flawlessly, and we only had a few hiccups at the end of the event with the scoring software, printer, and strong winds. The paper got jammed a couple times while printing causing us a bit of a delay getting the results out. All and all though, the upgraded equipment operated flawlessly. The first event (April 22, 2001) was well attended with 50 competitors. The lot at Jetform Park is somewhat small, but provided a good track for little nimble cars. The course was a two-lap course, and included a short slalom, bus stop, a larger sweeping turn, and a number of technical U-turns. First thing in the morning the track was quite damp, with some standing water, and covered with a very significant amount of sand and dirt. For most of the morning setup it looked like we had a team of Olympic curlers out on the lot, sweeping like they were possessed, great job guys! The first couple of runs were very grip limited despite of all the hard work and made for some very technical driving. As the day wore on, the track became clean and times dropped quickly.

Lawrence King in his 1971 Lotus Elan again dominated the field, by taking FTD on raw time. Jeff Graves in his Autorama award winning Miata took first overall on factored time. The full results of Event #1 are available on the website, and also on page 12 of this newsletter. Additional equipment improvements will also be seen at the next event. This includes, new tripods for the timing lights and updated timing/scoring software, as the current software was designed for dual courses which we have been unable to run recently due to our lots. There are also some additional special changes that are required for some new 'special' equipment. That 'special' equipment is a brand new timing display board that has been most graciously provided by Pat Weightman and Plus 1 Performance. Pat the proprietor of Plus 1 Performance, a Honda/Acura specialist. The display board has five digits, which are four inches high each. This display will be mounted on a tripod, and should be easily visible at distances up to 150 feet. This display board will be hooked up to the timing software which will send the time to be displayed on the score board each time the stop box light is broken. This will allow each competitor to be immediately informed of their "raw time" (without penalties) as well as allow other competitors and spectators to get realtime updates on run times! Thanks again to Pat and Plus 1 Performance for their generosity for the display board, it will certainly provide enjoyment for everybody.

With these improvements, we can look forward to a fun filled and very exciting Solo II series this year! Hope you come out for a run!

Autorama - A Prize Winning Success
by Rob Microys
On April 6th, 7th, and 8th I had the opportunity to work with a great bunch of people putting on our best Autorama display ever! A large number of people were involved in the project this year. First, I'd like to thank Ryan McNeil (works at Wash Dynamics) who obtained the most impressive booth ever! The booth is the booth that his company uses at trade shows for selling their product, car washes. It was completely made of stainless steel and aluminum, which stood 18 feet high, with huge 400W lights perched at the top of the superstructure. The display booth provided us with large stainless steel tables at each corner of the booth, with a tower in each table soaring up 18 feet to the light. It was quite a site to see, at night it was quite impressive, as it provided a large amount of light, which really made our booth stand out in the Aberdeen Pavilion. Setup for the show was only on Friday morning, which made it difficult for a lot of people to help out, as most of us work. I took the day off to setup the booth and coordinate the work details. The booth arrived early and setup started, it was quite involved, and required a significant amount of assembly. The booth got assembled, and most of the people took off, at that point I only had one car, Jeff's Miata. The next car to arrive was the Honda Civic, and finally, just a couple of hours before the show started, Mike Merriam arrived with his racecar - I was a little concerned at first but everybody pulled through! To fill out our 20'x40' space, we had Pat Weightman's Turbo Honda Civic SiR, Mike Merriam's 280ZX race car, Jeff Grave's Mazda Miata and Bill's 80cc Shift Kart. Pat's car

Pictured left to right: Rob Microys, Pat Weightman, Jeff Graves, and Chris Holmsten was the magnet of the show, taking first place in Sport Compact, maybe it had something to do with the amazing wax job, and the incredible looking carbon fiber hood. Pat worked the booth all weekend, promoting the club and Solo II at almost every opportunity. Mike Merriam's new Z car got lots of looks, as did Jeff's Miata and the Shifter Kart. Mike's car won first in Production Road Racer, and Jeff took home second place in Current Conservative Sports. Way to go guys, the cars were nice and shiny! The club really pulled together on this one, as we won Best Club Display this year! Congrats to all involved. Of course, this sort of achievement could not have been done without the help of a lot of volunteers. Thanks to Ryan McNeil for the awesome booth, I hope we can borrow it again in years to come! Bennett Leckie and Steve Bettles were instrumental in transporting the booth to and from the show. Bennett, Steve and Ryan all helped with the setup, and Bennett, Steve, Chris C, and JR Fortin all helped with the tear-down, thanks guys! Ron Woltman was the go-to-guy for the paperwork and getting all the car owners coordinated. Pat Weightman, Mike Merriam, Jeff Graves and Bill provided the vehicles to be drooled upon. Workers for the show shifts for helping to promote the club and hand out flyers included Chris Holtmsten, Basil Chiu, Sam Mandia, Gordon Acorn, Ayan Gangopadhyay, Erik Mckinnon, Chris Krepski, Pier Bortot, Mark Wilson, Chris Capowski and JR Fortin. And what did I do? Ah... Coordinated all the workers, pointed them in the right direction and just sat around and watched... Thanks again folks! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

May 2001
From One of the Dinosaurs
by David E. Butler
Hi! Believe It or Not! This is not one of Ripley's lines. My intent to write …FROM ONE OF THE DINOSAUR'S sort of got lost in the shuffle of plans having to be shelved for awhile. And if you have read the Executive Minutes, you will know that they have accepted my resignation. When I agreed to stand for the position of Vice-President, last fall, I was not working. Subsequently, in January, I was hired by a firm called Milford Marketing. Unfortunately, the hours fluctuate drastically sometimes from day to day or sometimes, just from week to week. It has always been my belief that when one takes on a role, such as that of VicePresident and Rally Liaison, one should be available at predictable times to fulfill the function of one's accepted role. Since I cannot tell you from day to day when you can get in touch with me, nor can I promise to attend regularly scheduled meetings, I felt that I had to withdraw my services. NO, I am not quitting the Club. I still hope to be able to help out with some activities on weekends - which is why I attended the Clerk Of the Course, the Other Officials and Scrutineering Training when it was offered. In addition, I hope to help with the MCO lapping and race weekends at Shannonville in both June and July. When I look back over all the positions in which I have served since originally having joined this Club back in 1966, this is the only position from which I have resigned prematurely before completion of my term. In general, I am satisfied with all of the other functions I have performed, such as LINK Editor (3 separate times), Publisher, Director (both appointed and elected) Chair, Entertainment Committee, Hotline Voice (about 8 consecutive years), Club Secretary (3 years), Historian, etc, etc, etc. (Wait for The Book to be published!) As I mentioned previously, it is not my intention to quit the Club. I did that once in 1992 after having been a member for 25 years but the death of Gary Hunt and completion of my first full year as a student in one of Algonquin College's Diploma programs shortened even that abstention. Gary's accident occurred in January, and along with Mike Lowe, we took over as co-LINK editors around the end of April. Therefore, my noninvolvement was only about one month in duration. At that time, R. Bennett Leckie had not amended our memberships to one full year. Previously, you joined for a full year membership, effective from January 1st to December 31st along with a 3 month lapse and normally you re-joined in November of the previous year. Bennett clearly observed that if you were a Dry-track Racing or Solo (I or II) competitor, this arrangement was quite acceptable but if you were an Ice Racer or a Rally competitor, your membership might lapse at the wrong time of the year. That is why our year-round memberships evolved. … er, but I digress. I re-joined in 1992 and with my current membership, I have been a member for 34 years or to put it another way, for nearly 60% of my entire life. In all of that time, I have always tried to put MCO and its members first in my priorities. In a way, I am still doing that. To serve you better, I withdrew from my position, so that you may be better served. So, as I indicated previously, as Vice-President, I will not be there, but as a supporter of MCO and its events, count me in and, if I am around and able to help, go ahead and ask. I will do what I can whenever I am able. Moreover, I just might write an article or two along the way. I would like to be able to declare myself as one or the only recipient of The Golden Pen Award in the Seventies, the Eighties, the Nineties and the Two Thousands (0-9) and if that sets a new Club record along the way, I will be happy with my achievement.

May 2001
April 10, 2001 Editor, The Link, Motorsport Club of Ottawa Dear Sir: I am writing to express my delight at having fulfilled one of my long-standing ambitions: to be a cover girl. You have made this come true with your photos of me on the March cover of The Link. I appear in no fewer than two of your five photos, taken during a Winter Solo II event at the Capital City Speedway. I immediately ran out and got colour photocopies of the cover, and began passing them around to friends and colleagues. Of course I met with an amazing reaction. "That's, um, really nice, Jean," said one. "You're where? But that's a full-face helmet, with a visor," said another. And last, "That's your Subaru? How come it looks the same as the one in the photo below?" Despite such petty comments (jealousy, that's what I think), I remain delighted and will continue to maintain that I have achieved "cover girl" status. I'm sure you will agree. Looking forward to participating in many more events, I remain yours truly, Jean MacGillivray (Glad I could make your day, Jean! - ed)

Request for Volunteer Information
Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs - Ontario Region is looking for volunteer workers to assist in the administration and operation of amateur and other autosport events in ontario. CASC has approached each of its member clubs with a request that they contact previous event workers to seek their assistance and to invite them to participate once again in keeping the sport alive and healthy. As a past volunteer autosport event worker, you will understand the number and quality of volunteer workers required to administer an event. The Ontario tracks and many autosport clubs are having difficulty finding volunteers for autosport events, and to date there is no regional or provincial workers' registry to which they can turn to request assistance. For this reason, CASC has enlisted the assistance of member clubs to contact past and present workers to ask if they would consent to the addition of their names and contact information to a CASC registry,

accessible to the tracks and all member clubs for purposes of enlisting workers for autosport events. It takes up to 130 people to work an amateur event at Mosport. A Shannonville event requires approximately 60. The majority of workers required are marshals and timers, for which training is provided. However, other positions are just as necessary, and your assistance is appreciated. . . . And its fun! We require volunteers for any/all of the following positions: marshals, timers, scrutineers, clerks, track clean up crew, grid marshals, pit marshals, registrars and registration crew, event stewards, competitor information,

paddock crew.
