Heart of Texas
BarBara Kraft

Stretching north of San Antonio to cities like Austin and Junction (and all the small towns in between), Texas Hill Country is home to music, food and stellar scenery. Come fall, the heat dissipates and the hills, lakes and rivers are perfect for relaxing. Need an excuse to visit? We’ve got three on the next page.

san antonio

San Antonio’s newest and largest wellness outpost, Lantana Spa at JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country, is pure Lone Star State. Locally grown lavender, wildflowers and herbs are incorporated in body treatments like the Texas Herbal Remedy, based on medicinal folk traditions from long ago. The wet circuit nods to the area’s crystal-clear creeks with a rain shower rinse, whirlpool, eucalyptus steam room and, our favorite, an inhalation room infused with lavender and lemongrass. The spa takes a cultural cue from Mexico’s curanderos (village healers) by offering every guest a red ribbon upon arrival. As the folk ritual goes, you tie six knots in the ribbon, one for each of your worries. The seventh knot forms a complete circle, and after your spa journey you leave the ribbon, and your worries, behind. Outside the spa, the 1,002-room mega-resort offers plenty of room to roam and relax with trails for bike rides and nature walks, s’more cookouts and six acres of pools, fountains, waterfalls and a lazy river set amidst native trees and flowers. fredericksburg the fredericksburg Herb farm has long been a favorite stop for Hill Country daytrippers, thanks to its gardens, restaurant and shops selling locally produced soaps and candles. Under new ownership since 2007, it’s now become an overnight destination in its own right. at the newly constructed 5,000-square-foot Nature’s Spa, botanically inspired treatments utilize herbs and florals grown on-site or sourced from fair-trade farms. (We like the texas Wildflower ritual, which ups the traditional mani/ pedi with flower power to exfoliate and hydrate.) also new: overnight accommodations in 14 quaint wooden cottages, designed after traditional 1800s Sunday houses (overnight lodging for area farmers who would come to town to socialize and trade). What hasn’t changed: quality dining at the farm Haus Bistro, and a prime location four blocks from fredericksburg’s main drag. Rooms from $179, fredericksburgherbfarm.com — Susan Moynihan

Travaasa Destinations’ resorts are all about the setting, so Texas was a great place to debut the first outpost, which opened in April. Taking over the former site of wellness retreat The Crossings, and adjacent to Balcones Canyonlands Reserve, Travaasa Austin feels like a luxe summer camp. Guests can design individual programs, choosing from five directions of all-inclusive programming that include adventure, fitness, culinary, cultural activities and spa — all nourished with straight-from-the-garden cuisine. Travaasa Austin gives a nod to cowboy culture with a rodeo-inspired workout on a mechanical bull, along with more traditional offerings like Zumba, barre and yoga. Or test your skills on the Prickly Pear Challenge Course, which involves wall climbing followed by zip-lining. Like your spa with a side of beach? The brand’s second location, Travaasa Hana, just opened in Maui. Rooms from $480 per person, all-inclusive, based on double occupancy; travaasa.com — Melanie Haiken

off-Strip oasis
Lake Las Vegas hit the jackpot in February when Ravella took over the Mediterranean-styled former Ritz-Carlton and relaunched the 30,000-foot spa as a holistic wellness center. Upon arrival to Ravella at Lake Las Vegas, trees line the winding drive and surround the swimming pool. Inside, past the jazzy lobby, the 349 rooms and suites are done up in shades of cream and celadon. At the Spa at Ravella, reflexology-trained nail technicians elevate a pedicure’s status while a number of treatment rooms open onto rosemary-scented gardens within earshot of a waterfall. All treatments begin at the essential oil blending bar, where, working with an array of scents, you’ll create a custom elixir for your session. ( Then you can have it blended into the resort’s unscented scrubs, washes and lotions.) Although there’s a view of the Strip — 25 miles in the distance — that’s as close to Sin City as it gets. Still, a bit of Vegas magic exists; overlooking the desert, there’s a pretty sand beach fronting a lakeside swimming pool. Rooms from $89, ravellahotel.com — Katie McElveen

expand your yoga practice to a more buoyant experience at the Fairmont Orchid’s Spa Without Walls. practiced on stand-up paddleboards, the new floating yoga trend (aka flo-yo) combines the serenity of floating on water with the challenge of practicing yoga into an hour-long endorphinboosted bliss. donica Shouse, the flo-yo instructor at the fairmont orchid Hawaii, conceived the idea after years of practicing poses on her stand-up paddleboard while waiting for waves between sets. “Because the ‘mat’ is constantly moving, flo-yo engages core muscles more than a land-based practice does,” Shouse says. But it’s a lot easier than people think. due to the ever-changing quality of water, each class is unique. plus you may make friends with a turtle, lock eyes with a fish or cool off with a friendly wave. Why does it take 30 minutes to get relaxed but only 30 seconds to tense up again? Trump Soho is fixing that problem with three new spa suites. The bedroom part is as plush as you’d expect from the Donald, with a cushy king-size bed and a surprisingly Zen-inspired living area with light wood floors, textured bark-inspired wallpaper and earth-toned Fendi Casa furniture. Our favorite part is the big marble bathroom with a multiheaded Dornbracht rain shower, heated towel racks and a chromotherapy Jacuzzi tub with city views. Two of the suites share an adjoining couples treatment room, and the third has a dry sauna. Book a spa suite and get a gratis $200 spa credit. Should you want to check out the spa itself, it’s just one floor down, accessible through a private entrance. Rooms from $789 (including a $200 spa credit), trumpsohohotel.com — Nora Zelevansky

ELLE Debut

fLorida

Designed by midcentury master Morris Lapidus, Miami’s Eden Roc hotel was a style icon from the moment it debuted in 1956, hosting the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Ann Margaret and Sammy Davis Jr. A careful restoration in 2008 maintained glorious aspects like the original exterior and the sexy circular lobby bar while adding the 21-story Ocean Tower to the renamed Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach. When it came time to add the finishing touch — a world-class spa — the hotel operators wanted something completely unique, so they turned to another style icon — ELLE magazine — to partner with the fashion magazine’s spa debut. The project took two years to complete from inception to opening. The bilevel, 22,000-square-foot spa was built from the ground up, incorporating chic design touches such as pebbled floors and walls, high ceilings, whimsical interior decor (we loved the tiny white rabbits hidden about in planters and the copious use of air plants) and a relaxation area, facing the resort’s four pools, which

you can rent out for private events. Still to come: the rooftop spa bar (opening this fall) overlooking the ocean. The treatments and product lines were hand-picked by ELLE editors and spa director Tim Williams. “We wanted to keep with ELLE’s philosophy that beauty can make your day without being harmful,” Williams says. “In the salon, we don’t offer damaging nail treatments such as acrylic or gel polish; for hair, we use L’Oreal Professional, which is ammonia-free.” Pre-body treatment, blend your own custom mix of sea salt and essential oil at the Scrub Bar. Or opt for a facial from Red Flower and Tammy Fender (the latter occasionally stops in to do prearranged appointments). Our favorite: the ELLE Spa Signature Facial (60 minutes, $325), a four-handed pamper-fest that

includes an esthetician who works on your crown and face while a reflexologist works on your feet. Top suites to book are the corner rooms in the Ocean Tower, which come equipped with a living room, dining area, wraparound balconies and bathroom suites souped up with Clarisonic brushes. Add in the prime beachfront locale on North Collins Avenue and farm-to-table cuisine at 1,500 Degrees, and you have all the ingredients you need for a chic Miami weekend. Up in tHe treeS

Surrounded by the mark twain national forest, Stonewater Cove Resort and Club’s new treehouse Spa was designed to be in perfect harmony with nature. the spa’s elevated treatment rooms are made from lumber milled from fallen trees and include floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a canopy of trees and the shores of table rock Lake, just steps away. Because each tree house uses cedar in its interior (including wooden massage tables), guests benefit from cedar’s therapeutic aroma, known as a remedy for decongestion and stress. also part of the ambience: sounds of running water coming from handmade fountains constructed from recycled buckets and exposed pipes. the lemongrass foot massage (45 minutes, $55), which includes an exfoliation and mud wrap, is perfect for soothing feet after hiking the nearly 20 miles of forest trails. post-treatment, zip-line over the ozark mountain foothills or canoe on the lake. Come evening, settle into a rocking chair and view the constellations from a cozy wooden porch. Rooms from $329, stonewatercove.com — Lisa Davis nortH caroLina

farm Charm
As the saying goes, it takes a village. And when Fearrington House Inn owner R.B. Fitch decided to build one — on the bones of a century-old dairy farm near Chapel Hill, North Carolina — he created an oasis of country chic. The tranquil Relais & Chateaux, laid out around a central village square, features 32 rooms, including several suites or little houses, complete with tiny picketfence-encircled yards. The five-diamond Fearrington House Restaurant, certified by the Green Restaurant Association, features locally sourced, inventive cuisine with wine pairings by noted sommelier Maximilian Kast. At the

Belted Goat cafe (named for the Belted Galloway breed of cows and goats on property), the still-in-use antique coffee roaster serves up warm cups of Joe; the outdoor beer garden, Roost, refurbished from an old corn crib, features microbrews from two local breweries. The 4,000-square-foot Spa at Fearrington is deliciously cozy with touches of low-key luxury. A large, sunny, ground-floor studio holds the salon, a haven for those in need of a soothing Luxury Pedicure (75 minutes, $80). Or head upstairs to the

Elemis-themed spa for a muscle-melting massage (60 minutes, $120) or Elemis Visible Brilliance Facial, with microcirculatory massage and a two-phase Amino Acid skin-smoothing mask (75 minutes, $150). As the sun slices through the farmhouse windows and illuminates the floorboards of your treatment room, you can literally watch the cows come home — a living, breathing, grass-rootsy throwback to the original heritage of Fearrington House.
