This is a worksheet to go with my lesson plan on long and short vowels. It promotes phonemic awareness and goes along with the book Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald. It is appropriate for second grade.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle Phonics Worksheet
For each sentence below, use your highlighter to highlight the words with long vowels.
1. “Don’t put them back, Dad, I don’t care who goes into my room or gets my stuff.”
2. That night when Hubert’s father came home his mother told him all about Mrs. PiggleWiggle’s treatment.
3. They ate about ten little sandwiches, a small dish of salted nuts, two little dishes of candy,
some olives and pickles and some chocolate marshmallow cake.
4. At breakfast Mr. Russell took a little ruler out of his pocket and measured the grapefruit
and then he took the biggest.
5. But when Mary came in from school, Penelope woke up and began preening her feathers.
For each sentence below, use your pencil to underline the words with short vowels.
6. She took her best friend, Kitty Wheeling, with her, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle was very glad
to see them and showed them through her upside-down house and served tea and cookies.
7. At nine o’clock the clock struck again and Mrs. Gray put down the socks and took up a
woman’s magazine.
8. He made the bed again and this time it was neat and smooth.
9. Mother grabbed his wrist and the pie went SPLAT all over the rug.
10. There were great big ones about the size of apples, down to little tiny ones not much
larger than a penny.
Write your own sentence about a chore using at least one long vowel word and at least one
short vowel word. Underline the long vowel words and highlight the short vowel words.
