What to Prepare when Meeting a Criminal Defense Attorney in Long Island
Monday, December 6, 2010 by Kenneth S. Feraru
How to prepare for meetings in the offices of Long Island criminal lawyers

Many criminal charges do not involve detention. Most misdemeanor charges-including traffic tickets-typically involve a police stop, the issuance of a citation (with a court date), and your release. This gives you time to choose from the many Nassau County criminal defense attorneys and meet with a law firm to prepare your defense prior to court. You can give your defense attorney a head start by bringing the following items to your first meeting: All official paperwork: Bring photocopies of traffic tickets and any other documents you may have obtained from police. These documents provide your criminal law attorneys in Long Island with the clearest understanding of the charges. Contact information: If witnesses were present, or if others were involved in the stop, provide phone and any other contact information you can obtain for each individual. Criminal defense lawyers often have questions for these individuals. Notes about the incident: As soon as possible, write down every detail about the event. Include information about the events leading up to the stop, any searches that were performed (and whether police had a warrant or you gave permission), what you said to police, and what they said to you. Do not leave anything out—the smallest detail may be the one that helps your attorney build an effective defense.
How to prepare when you have been detained

If you face serious charges, your first meeting with criminal attorneys may be in a Long Island police station. In this case, the best way to help a criminal lawyer is to carefully observe your Miranda right to remain silent until your lawyer is there to advise you. In June 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that, after an arrest, individuals must explicitly state that they want to exercise their right to remain silent and stop all questioning. Without making this statement, police can continue to question you, even if you are not required to respond. Without a Nassau County criminal defense lawyer at your side, any statements you make are virtually guaranteed to be used in the case against you.
