The Medical Action Group (MAG) is pleased to announce our quarterly e-newsletter to bring you the latest news about projects and activities related to our work in providing health services to human rights violations victims and survivors, in torture prevention and in adherence to Code of Medical Ethics, Human Rights Principles and International Humanitarian Laws. In this e-newsletter, you will also find news articles about MAG, information about MAG members as well as related organizational matters.

ENHANCING THE CAPACITIES OF PROSECUTORS AND INVESTIGATORS FOR EFFECTIVE INVESTIGATION AND INCREASED PROSECUTION OF TORTURE CASES USING MEDICAL EVIDENCE
Under the Republic Act No. 9745 otherwise known as the Anti-Torture Act of 2009 and other international human rights instruments which the Philippines is a State Party to, torture is a crime and non-derogable. MAG, along with various human rights groups, plays a significant role in the campaign to eradicate torture in the country. Forging partnership with the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), through the support of British Embassy Manila; MAG aims to further enhance the capacities of prosecutors and law enforcement officers for more effective investigation and increased prosecution of torture cases using medical evidence.

The Organization from the intern view I’m Angela from Austria and I’ve been at MAG as an intern for the last two month. In my case it was the first time I got an insight view of an NGO - basing on human and health Rights - working environment. It has been a very interesting and exciting time, personally as well as professionally. I not only met new people through different events, workshops or meetings, but also visited places, like Cebu City based on the Training Project and as well the Provinces Pampanga and Nueva Ecija according to the Jail Tour Project. Unique experiences that showed me how important this kind of work can be for the people the Organization is trying to help and advocates for. Within MAG, the staff works very close together and even when everyone has his project, they support each other and share their opinions. So it’s just normal that after a certain time they are getting your second family. The time, passion and power they spend on their work and projects, trying to make them a success is often combined with stress, chaos, hard effort and multi-tasking skills but also with enjoyment, love and fun! I hope by drafting this newsletter I can contribute something to the Organization, since they showed me that you can change something as long as you work with passion and never give up!
Davao City, March 15, 2013 - Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Richard Anthony D. Fadullon talks about the Rights-Based Prosecution to the prosecutors and law enforcement officers in one of the six batches of Enhancing the Capacities of the Prosecutors and Investigators for Effective Investigation and Increased Prosecution of Torture Cases Using Medical Evidence.
The training series has been an eye-opener to the issues faced by the DOJ, the PNP and the NBI and for us, medical professionals and established a good working relationship among the aforementioned agencies. PHILIPPINE ACTION CONCERNING TORTURE (PACT)
It was in early 1982 when Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) led by the late Sen. Jose W. Diokno and Dr. Mita Pardo de Tavera who had been in the forefront of the legal battle for the respect of basic human rights, urged physicians to form a medical organization that will assist in documenting evidences of cases of torture to political prisoners. MAG formed the Philippine Action Concerning Torture (PACT) in 1986 to extend medical and psychological services especially to torture victims and survivors. Continue reading!

Dr. June Caridad Pagaduan-Lopez, the UN Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture Member, UP Psychiatry Department Professor and one of the Medical Action Group founding members talks about the developing indicators in prison health care on April 4, 2013 in Quezon City, Metro Manila.
The Mindanao Anti-Torture Alliance (MATA), which was established in April 2010, with MAG’s initiative to consolidate human rights advocates in Mindanao for the campaign against torture, held its General Assembly and Capacity-Building activity on the UN Convention Against Torture reporting procedure on March 11-12, 2013 in Zamboanga City.
