Magneto by Rusteen Honardoost INT.MID-DAY, EDGAR'S HOME Young EDGAR ZAVALA runs through the door. He's wearing a replica Magneto helmet that is dented and beat up. His clothes are roughed up and a little bloody. Under the helmet, Edgar is sporting a black eye and tears pouring down his cheeks. He chucks his backpack to the floor and slams the door behind him as he runs into the kitchen. In the kitchen, he looks up at the refrigerator and stares at an autographed photo of Sir Ian McKellan (aka Magneto from "X-Men"). The signed picture reads, "One day, you too will be a superhero. Much love, McKellan". It is held up on the refrigerator by a novelty Magneto magnet, the kind you would get out of a cereal box. EDGAR jumps up and swipes the magnet off the refrigerator as the photo floats down to Edgars feet. As Sir Ian McKellan's face looks up at young EDGAR, he takes the small magnet in his hand and stuffs it in his mouth. With his cheeks still marked with tears, he chokes down the magnet. As he coughs, he hears the garage door open. MRS. ZAVALA Edgar, is that you? EDGAR tries to hold back his coughs, but he starts crying as MRS. ZAVALA enters the room. She sees Edgar sitting on the floor crying, his tears spilling down onto the photo of Sir Ian McKellan. MRS. ZAVALA Oh sweet lord, what happened? EDGAR attempts to stop crying. He doesn't respond to his mother's questions. INT. LATE AFTERNOON, EDGAR'S HOME Two police officers have arrived at EDGAR's house along with EDGAR's Father, MR. ZAVALA. MR. ZAVALA is comforting MRS. ZAVALA as they answer the police's questions. POLICE OFFICER 1 Has anything like this ever happened before? MR. ZAVALA Not at all... I mean, Bullies are always a problem, ya know? But its never been this bad.

2

POLICE OFFICER 1 But Edgar has been the subject of bullying before? And what's the story with the helmet? MRS. ZAVALA Well, the thing is that Edgar loves the cartoon, "X-Men". They're a couple of... POLICE OFFICER 1 I know what the X-Men are, ma'am. Continue. MR. ZAVALA Anyways, Edgar has always loved one particular cartoon character, Magneto. He got this replica helmet for Christmas and he hasn't stopped wearing it since. He even takes it to school. He's such an easy target for the bullies. As this goes on, we see flashes of earlier in the day as the kids taunt him, and one particularly vicious BULLY throws a ball at EDGAR and knocks him onto the floor. The other kids join in and soon there is a mob beating up EDGAR. Back in the house, POLICE OFFICER 2 walks over to EDGAR while his parents are talking to POLICE OFFICER 1. He kneels over in front of EDGAR as EDGAR is watching an episode of "X-Men". POLICE OFFICER 2 Excuse me, son. Can I talk to you for a second? EDGAR doesn't respond. He tries to look around POLICE OFFICER 2 in order to continue watching the show. POLICE OFFICER 2 Edgar, this is a very serious situation. We want to help you and your family. EDGAR refuses to even make eye contact. POLICE OFFICER 2 gives up and walks over to EDGAR's parents. POLICE OFFICER 2 Has Edgar made any attempt to talk with you since you found him? MRS. ZAVALA No, he hasn't said a word...

3

POLICE OFFICER 2 Alright, well, we'll go over to the school tomorrow and see if anyone knows anything. Until then, keep Edgar safe and comfortable but don't pressure him to talk about what happened. POLICE OFFICER 1 looks back over at EDGAR, who is still staring at the TV, with a look of concern. POLICE OFFICER 1 He'll open up when the time comes. Good night, ma'am. Sir. The police officers walk out the door, and MRS. ZAVALA locks it behind them before walking over to EDGAR. MRS. ZAVALA Hey Edgar, why don't you go watch your show upstairs? I need to talk to your dad about some boring adult stuff. Without saying a word, EDGAR shuffles up to the TV, grabs the VHS copy of "The X-Men" and goes up to his room. INT. EDGAR'S ROOM, AN HOUR LATER EDGAR is still watching "The X-Men" silently on his bed while eating a bowl of spaghetti. EDGAR reaches for his glass of juice when he accidentally drops his metal fork. Without the energy to get off his bed and pick up the fork, he extends one arm out in a weak attempt to channel the Force. As EDGAR sticks his arm out, a strange feeling comes over him, and he notices the fork starting to shake. Then miraculously, the fork flies into EDGAR's hand. EDGAR is shocked, staring at the fork, then his hand and finally his stomach in disbelief. "Did it really work?" he thinks to himself. Looking across the room, EDGAR sees a die cast Magneto action figure on his desk. Extending his arm out again, the figure flies across the room before stopping just in front of EDGAR. He spins the action figure around, observing it and his new powers. As he does this, all the other metal objects begin to float into the air. As they rise higher and higher, EDGAR grabs the still floating Magneto action figure out of the air and all the other metal objects drop to the ground. A smile comes across EDGAR's face as he looks over at his Magneto helmet.

THE NEXT DAY, INT. COMIC BOOK STORE Inside the comic book shop are wall-to-wall comic book memorabilia. Signed photos of famous comic book movie actors, unopened limited edition collectibles, and vintage comic books are all held up on the wall. At the register is COMIC BOOK GUY, a stereotypically overweight comic book nerd unaware of how stereotypical his nerd-elitism is. On the other side of the counter is a girl maybe 5 years older than EDGAR holding a comic book that says "THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN: ISSUE #1!!" CBG No, you do not own the first edition of "THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN". What you do own is the 15th reprint of 1st issue of the 23rd series called "THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN"! CBG gives a hefty laugh as the poor girl walks away from the counter humiliated. As she approaches the door, EDGAR walks in, dressed in his full Magneto outfit. The girl is shocked at his appearance, but she just wants to exit the store with her dignity intact. EDGAR Don't go. You're going to want to see this. As she lets the door close in front of her, the girl turns around to watch EDGAR approach CBG's counter. EDGAR can't see over the counter, but can see CBG's face with a look of contempt on it. CBG You again? Look kid, until you get the money, I'm not going to just give you whatever you want because you're wearing a tacky costume. EDGAR doesn't respond. CBG Come on, Asperger's. Either you're going to buy something or you have to get out. EDGAR doesn't say anything, he only points one finger at CBG's prize possession: a life sized Spiderman figure signed by Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire. Its almost like a shrine hanging right behind CBG. CBG cannot help but laugh. The girl is confused, but can't look away. EDGAR opens his hand, and now begins to focus his power on

5

the action figure. It starts to shake and soon some of the other items adorning the store start to shake too, but CBG doesn't notice over the sound of his laughter. Then the Spiderman figure flies off the wall and knocks CBG over the counter and onto the floor. EDGAR uses his powers to float the figure over to the girl. She is too shocked to handle EDGAR's gesture, and runs out of the store. EDGAR is angered that his gesture was not appreciated, and throws the statue back at CBG who had only just gotten up off the floor. Now EDGAR starts to pull all the memorabilia off of the walls. As the store falls apart all around him, CBG breaks down crying as his store falls apart around him. EDGAR basks in his destruction, opens the door for himself with his powers, and slams it shut behind him with such force the glass shatters. CBG You damaged the packaging! The packaging! EXT. OUTSIDE THE COMIC BOOK STORE As EDGAR walks out the door, he sees the girl running away. As she reaches the cross walk, she looks back and sees EDGAR. She has a terrified look on her face. Wait! The girl runs across the street. EDGAR is upset that she didn't appreciate his gesture. EDGAR uses his powers to stop a passing car and uses it to block her path. Inside the car, the driver is almost as terrified as the girl. EDGAR approaches her while she screams in terror. EDGAR is confused. His actions at the comic book store should have made him a superhero. Instead, this girl was staring at him like a supervillian. In order to get a better look at her, EDGAR takes off his helmet. EDGAR looks deep into her eyes, trying to understand what he's done wrong. The girl is frozen in fear and hesitates to break eye contact before finally running away. EDGAR watches her run away, depressed that his actions have hurt an innocent not unlike himself. INT. LATE AFTERNOON, EDGAR'S HOME EDGAR and his family are all eating calzones around the dinner table. EDGAR is still wearing his Magneto outfit, still conflicted about his super powers. Edgar's parents pick up on his moody behavior. MR. ZAVALA So son, how are you doing? EDGAR

6

I'm good. MRS. ZAVALA That's great, Edgar. We're both really glad you're doing better. You know how much we worry about you. EDGAR Well don't. I can take care of myself. MR. ZAVALA Well Edgar, I think what your mother is trying to say is that we just want you to be happy. And we're... Mysteriously, MR. ZAVALA's mug falls to the floor before he can finish his sentence. MR & MRS ZAVALA are both confused but let the strangeness pass. MRS. ZAVALA So how was school today? EDGAR It was fun. MR. ZAVALA We got a call from your school today. They said a couple of kids were found beat up in the playground. Did you hear about this? EDGAR I didn't do it. MR. ZAVALA Look, Edgar. We understand it's hard being bullied, and that you want to act out. But violence is never the answer. The table and silverware all start shaking. MRS. ZAVALA is acting like this might be an earthquake. EDGAR Am I grounded? MR. ZAVALA We don't want to ground you, Edgar. We just want you to learn the difference between good and bad. I think we should go to the boy's house tomorrow and apologize.

EDGAR

7

EDGAR I don't want to. MR. ZAVALA I'm disappointed in you, Edgar. You should know better that to act like this. The silverware all fly straight into the ceiling and fall as broken shards back onto the table. MR & MRS ZAVALA start freaking out. MRS. ZAVALA What is going on?! EDGAR You can't tell me what to do! EDGAR hops out of his chair and flips the entire table in an act of childhood aggression towards his parents. The table is covered in broken silverware, and one errant dish fragment has hit MRS. ZAVALA in her arm. She is screaming, and EDGAR is shocked at the damage he's caused. He runs up to his room as MR. ZAVALA calls 911. INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM EDGAR is sitting on his own in the hospital waiting room. Through the window we see MRS. ZAVALA in a hospital bed, with MR. ZAVALA talking to a doctor. Ashamed, EDGAR is holding onto his Magneto helmet, staring into the face hole thinking about what it means to have super powers. MR. ZAVALA walks out of the room and sits down next to EDGAR. MR. ZAVALA Edgar. I didn't tell the doctor exactly what happened. Not that I really understood what happened, but still. I know you didn't mean to hurt your mother. But you have to talk to me so I know how to help you. When MR. ZAVALA stops talking, EDGAR has trouble coming up with a response. As he opens his mouth to say something, a pain flashes through EDGAR's stomach, silencing him. MR. ZAVALA shows some concern, but when EDGAR projectile vomits onto the hospital floor, he calls for a nurse. When the nurse finally comes, EDGAR passes out. INT. HOSPITAL ROOM EDGAR wakes up in a hospital bed to the sound of a doctor talking to the patient in the bed next to him. On his

8

nightstand in a sanitized bin is the magnet EDGAR had swallowed earlier. EDGAR can't hear exactly what they're talking about, but its obvious that the news isn't good. On the doctor's side is the patient's mother, who seems distraught at what she's hearing. The doctor walks the mother out of the room, and when they leave the room, EDGAR sees that the patient in the bed is the same BULLY who had beaten him before. The BULLY is depressed by the doctor's news, and is holding back tears when he catches EDGAR staring at him. BULLY What are you looking at, metal head? EDGAR looks away, but then the sound of the BULLY crying catches his attention. EDGAR looks over at the counter on the other side of his bed and sees his Magneto helmet, his VHS copy of "The X-Men" cartoon and a piece of paper. EDGAR struggles out of the bed, and walks over to the table. EDGAR picks up the piece of paper and sees that it reads "Love Mom & Dad". He looks at the Magneto helmet before moving it aside. EDGAR picks up the "X-Men" VHS, walks over to the old TV in the hospital room and pops in the VHS. As he walks back to his bed, he grabs a tissue and hands it to the BULLY. The Bully doesn't say anything, but accepts the tissue and blows his nose. As EDGAR gets back in his bed, the adventures of the X-Men plays on the screen. A smile comes across both of their faces as they enjoy the cartoon together. THE END
