The Rundown

March 2011

A message from the President…..
From President Joe Marrotta It seems that we have fallen prey to a sudden trend all across our state and possibly abroad. After talking to Jim from “Sports Fields Inc” the company who repairs our fields, he asked me how our registration went this year. I had to tell him that we were about the same in every division except Pinto. His exact words to me were, “Join the crowd Mr. Marrotta. Everywhere from Naperville to Blue Island has received record drops in participation this year. But if you go onto the soccer side of my business they are the opposite”. Now I am not sure why this is? Baseball is America’s past time. Why are we losing all of these great baseball prospects to soccer? This is something that I am going to be asking myself for the next several months to come. I am just floored by this sudden switch to soccer. All I can hope is that it is a fad that will soon pass, we will weather the storm and soon the next generation of kids will realize what a great game baseball is. Luckily we were able to get the numbers where they needed to be with the help of several Board members by either making phone calls, personally visiting families or how ever else they did it. But the fact of the matter is, THEY DID IT! Every Division is now closed with the exception of Pinto and Shetland. No further registrations will be accepted for the 2011 season. For the most part, the drafts are now done and we are ready to PLAY BALL!!!!!

2011 Baseball Mania Fundraiser
Some fundraising ideas may sound easy (like cookie dough or gift wrap sales), but actually require a lot of work (think of sales sheets, inventory, distribution). If you’re looking for easy fundraising ideas that don’t require so much of your time and energy, Charity Mania has a fundraiser for you. Charity Mania sweepstakes are based on the excitement of your favorite sports. Winning tickets are based on the performance of sports teams, players, or drivers that are randomly assigned to each sweepstakes ticket. Here’s how our simple fundraising ideas work: 1. Sign up for the Charity Mania Fundraiser! 2. Sell tickets! 3. Ticket holders root for their teams! 4. Charity Mania pays the winners! 5. Your organization makes money! Doing this FUNDRAISER gave us the ability to NOT raise fees like other surrounding leagues were forced to do for the 2011 season. This way, you are able to resell these tickets and get your money back. Keeping the league registration fees where they have been for the last 5 years!

From Risk Management Director, Ricky Moore…..
Opening day is getting closer by the day. If you have not submitted your background check form you must do so ASAP. I will be submitting the forms soon to HHPD. Managers remember, it is your responsibility to make sure your coaches have submitted a form. Otherwise, you may risk losing YOUR volunteer coupons. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Ricky Moore -Risk Management

Concessions Corner
From Concessions Director: Karen Orozco
1. When signing up for the concession stand please know that we are all counting on you to work your shift. If you do not show up or find a replacement for your shift the entire league loses out. Any volunteer who simply does not show up for their respective will lose their volunteer fee for the year. If we do not have enough parents for a given shift, the stand will be forced to close & again the league & our kids will lose out. A sign will be placed on the stating “Due to lack of volunteers the stand will be closed today”. It’s unfair to the Director to be forced to work the stand 6 days a week because we can’t find anybody to help. The following will now be the procedures for opening & closing the HHYBS concession stand. Please arrive by 5:15pm on your shift date.
