The NCAA basketball tournaments are quickly approaching, and as a reminder, coaches, student-athletes and staff MAY NOT place any sort of bet on the games. This includes individual games and bracket pools. For student-athletes, betting on the tournament will lead to lost eligibility. Enjoy the games, watch as many as you can, but please, don’t bet on it. The risk isn’t worth it.

COMPLIANCE TEAM OF THE MONTH Each month, I will select a team to highlight that has done well both on the field and in the compliance office. This may be through asking questions, submitting forms on time and a general interest in the rules. March’s team of the month is Softball!

UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL MEDIA In February, the NCAA introduced a rather lengthy educational column on electronic transmissions, social media and recruiting. It contained the following: First, any of your personal social media pages may include generic information related to Samford. This is anything that could be found on samfordsports.com or in the newspaper. It may not contain anything altered for a recruiting purpose. The only way you can direct materials toward prospective student-athletes is if such content is produced by the institution's official admissions or student-services office and available to all students or is not created for a recruiting purpose (e.g., interviews with current student-athletes or game highlights targeted to a general audience). You may not comment publicly on social media about a prospect (other than to confirm recruiting) until after they have signed their NLI/Financial Aid agreement or until Samford has received their enrollment deposit. For all of the sports other than basketball, all forms of electronic transmissions (except for email and fax) are prohibited. Examples of prohibited materials include text messages, instant messages, SnapChats and comments on a PSAs Facebook page. BASKETBALL: This does not apply to you. Any type of electronically transmitted correspondence (e.g., e-mail, facsimile, instant message, text message, SnapChat, etc.) may be sent to a prospective-student athlete, provided the correspondence is sent directly to the PSA (or their parents/legal guardians) and is private between the sender and recipient. ALL OTHER SPORTS: It sounds like beginning 8/1/14, you will be able to use SnapChat. If/when this changes you will be made aware.

FIND THE VIOLATION Before the team was to begin travel to an away game later that day, the head coach called for an impromptu voluntary practice for only pitchers and catchers. The travel day was an off day for the team.

UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL MEDIA (Cont.)
1. It is permissible to send correspondence to a PSA through email equivalent functions (private messaging, DMs) that are available on social media platforms. @replies and wall-to-wall communication are NOT considered email equivalents. 2. Sports other than basketball – still no text messaging. 3. You may friend/follow a PSA before the first permissible date to send recruiting materials. 4. A coach may not communicate publicly with a PSA on social media before they have signed. Also, you may not retweet a PSA. 5. Your athletes MAY connect with a PSA provided it does NOT come at your direction AND does NOT relate to the PSAs recruitment (no comments about a visit). 6. You can connect to a PSA through private social media communication at any time, but you may not publicly endorse a PSAs coach or facility. 7. You may not send generic congratulatory/good luck messages mentioning a specific high school on social media. 8. If you have a son/daughter on a high school team, you may send generic congratulatory/good luck messages in which their HS is mentioned, but may not mention another PSA unless they have signed an NLI with us. 9. Even if you have a pre-existing relationship with a HS coach, you may not post a congratulatory message mentioning their name. 10. You may take a picture with a PSA during a visit or camp, but may not post it to a microblog, personal website, institutional website, social networking or other social media site prior to their signing. 11. This one is the most confusing. You may generically state that you are visiting a location (high school or town, attending a contest), but comments made about a specific prospective student-athlete, coach, high school or athletics facility that is primarily used by prospective student-athletes are not permissible. This rule seems to contradict itself, and I am working to get clarification from the conference on this, but as a rule of thumb, do not post about a specific facility (I.e. “The fields at Homewood HS are the best in the state!”)

PRACTICE LOGS ARE DUE EVERY TUESDAY RECRUITING LOGS ARE DUE THE TH 5 OF EACH MONTH

AND THE ANSWER IS…
Although the practice was voluntary, the coach did not understand that any sort of countable athletic activity, voluntary or not, is impermissible on a declared off day. 17.1.6.4.1 Travel Day. A travel day related to athletics participation may be considered as a day off, provided no countable athletically related activities (see Bylaw 17.02.1) occur during that day. (Adopted: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91) !
