Have you Noticed That It's Time To Ride In Texas?
So what? You may say— It's always time to ride in Texas and you are correct. But for those of you that have been joining us on our rides, you have seen firsthand the truth in the subject line. Over the past several rides, we start our rides with a little bit in the air, jackets, gloves and in a few cases, chaps, but by the time we start back, we are down to t-shirts and finger-less gloves. Oh, did I forget to tell you that this is for the end of February and the first part of March?... it just makes you want to holler as loud as you can; "God Bless Texas!" The other thing that you would have noticed on the back county roads that we love to run is the lush green tall grass growing on the sides of the roads and in our pasture lands. It has been awhile here in Texas since we have seen this— the pictures are still very clear in my mind of the dirt and dead grass, dust storms and farmers turning their horses out loose because they couldn't feed them. At this point you may be thinking, Rick, where are you going with this.?.. you should be talking about Harleys!

February 2012 March 2012

Ok, so stick with me. Let me take you to the Harley famous saying that we all live by "It's Not About The Destination, It's All About The Journey!" Here is what I am telling you, Your Woodlands Harley Chapter has had so many absolutely Awesome Journeys this year and we are putting New Journeys together each month. So, you say, you can't ride on Saturday's— that’s ok. We have Sunday rides. You say you can't ride on Sunday, we have Saturday rides. The truth being told, we have even done some Woodlands HOG Chapter Tuesday and Wednesday rides. I guess you can say we ride all the time and have Fun Doing It. If you have not had a chance #1420 to join us lately on one of our journeys, come on out and enjoy the fun with your Woodlands HOG family. Sponsored by A parting thought for this month; "There is nothing like the sound of the Harleys and their Rolling Thunder as they travel H-D of The Woodlands down the back roads of Texas!" 25545 I-45 North Rick Harris, Director ~ Ghost Rider (281)-681-0099

Pretty darned chilly, but smooth. Had a nice time and those who joined in were Brave to ride in the very cold weather!” - Rebecca “Yankee's is the place to go when it's cold. Quick service because every one else stayed home & it's warm. That wood stove will run you out of there.” - Steve 2/14— Polish Pierogi Run: 44 mile, one-way trip with 7 bikes and 8 riders “2 members met us at the restaurant. Ate too much!” - Walt 2/19— El Toro: 89 mile, one-way trip with 23 bikes and 24 riders 2/25— Dozier’s BBQ: 87 mile, one-way trip with 12 bikes and 16 riders “The ride was great, some were cold, but was not too bad. Food was very good, I brought home supper.” - Dale “The ride route was awesome! I really enjoyed riding in and enjoying the countryside scenery including the horses, goats, longhorns, etc. Great BBQ and neat venue. Thanks!” - Lee 2/26— ABC Ride: 118 mile, one-way trip with 19 Bikes and 20 riders “Great weather and I think everyone enjoyed the ride. We skipped the Southern Flyer because we had so many people and went on to Purcell's. Service was a little slow because of the number of people. But, GOOD food. About half the group headed for home after lunch. The rest went on to Chappell, Hempstead and Waller. This is only a guess, however, I believe about 15 people qualified for their 2012 ABC Patch/Pin!” - Steve

Memories from a Chapter Ride, including one Fall 2011 ride to New Mexico….
By Henning Nielsen A while back, Lee asked me to write an article about last year’s Fall ride. Kind of a “teaser” for this year’s Spring ride. Easily flattered, I accepted. Who can say “no” to Lee anyway? Of course, I forgot that I am increasingly challenged these days remembering anything. I go as far back as breakfast with good recall. Then it gets “blurry”. I realized, going back 4 months to New Mexico would represent a significant challenge. Let’s see now, was that the ride when we stopped at that fantastic BBQ place for lunch one day? My saliva glands start working overtime already, thinking about the sauce. Or was that the ride where we rode in the rain for three days, my boots leaking like a sieve, my socks were wet, and .. never mind, that was the run to Las Vegas. It was W E T , but still a great week though, and you’ve got to practice your riding in the rain skills. And we got to see the Grand Canyon. The whole trip was worth the minute you stepped up to the railing and took in that big hole. Can’t explain it, gotta see it. Maybe this was the ride where one early morning we set out, while it was still dark, and witnessed the sun come up to the left of us, right around 11 o’clock, spectacularly over a range of mountains, and warmed us up. There is something great (in so many ways) about riding in a pack on a wide open road, no other traffic, the sound of 6 Harley Davidson motorcycles in front of you, and witnessing the breaking of a new day. I am thinking this happened on the ride to New Mexico last fall. I am pretty sure. I remember another morning, still dark, when right in front of us was a gigantic, enormous “shooting star” ..”whoa, did you guys see that?”. It was hard to miss. I do believe this was New Mexico, but another ride, another time. Or how about when we were climbing up a mountain through the forest, and all of sudden the radio went crazy.. “Look out, a Mama Bear with three cubs at the turn”… By the time I got the end of that message, there she was, big, black and spectacular. Two of the cubs were scampering back into the woods, Mama Bear and one of the cubs still standing right by the roadside. Her and I could have “high fived” each other if I had hung out my “paw”. I think that was a Chapter Ride, but maybe this was Arkansas, I do think it

was the right year, though, 2011? Let me see, was it the fall ride to New Mexico where we literally rode thru a herd of buffalo, no, no, that was not New Mexico, that was going to California. I wasn’t even on that ride, but I heard about it, and thought to myself: “could have, should have, but you didn’t”. Or how about the run to Vegas when we came into Tombstone? It was H O T , we checked in to the hotel, and went across the street to whatever that bar was called, something like “Big Nose Kate’s Saloon”. Man, was that beer cold, and was it good. I also laid down my brand new Ultra Classic in the hotel parking lot that afternoon. It was sandy and gravelly…. Not sure what happened, but I was pulling into my spot, and I lost it. Couldn’t hold it, just gently laid herself down, as if to say: “hey, pal, you are not the only one needing some rest”.. My good friend Mark was the only witness, he helped me stand her back up, and I swore him to secrecy. Of course with this article everyone knows. Oh, well… I know this next one was New Mexico, but I believe it was “Run to the Balloons”. Remember coming out of Albuquerque, and it was C O L D . Low mid thirties, we made one turn and it felt like you had run straight into the Sun, that’s how bright and sharp the Sun was. Did we go to a dealership on the ride to New Mexico, last fall? I believe we did, and I have a tee shirt to prove it. Did we sit around the pool, drink beer, laugh and lie about stuff? Was that this ride? I do believe so. I think I had my iPod on shuffle mode, listening to Johnny Cash, Eagles or local song writer/story teller, Owen Temple, legs stretched out resting on highway pegs, the sun warming my back, being able to “see” as far as my eyes can take me, in all directions, thinking about nothing, or maybe how blessed I am having a great family, a wife I love more today than 30+ years ago when we got married, two great daughters, my health, a job I like, a pack of Harley friends who “have my back”, and just in general, how truly great life is. I love the smell of my garage after my Harley has been parked there for a couple of hours after a long trip. If you haven’t been on a vacation ride, give it a try. As best as I can remember……… it’s B E A U T I F U L Memories from a Chapter Ride.

Sending Positive Vibes to Our Mending Members!
Jose Andrada — Jose got hit by a car (on his bike riding alone) the last weekend in January. He was in the hospital with his leg broken in two places for a few days. He was doing OK and back home recovering the next week, but will be down for some time. “Diamond” Dave Johnson — “Diamond” Dave is mending nicely from his recent surgery. It was great to have him and Debbie at the Chapter meeting in February! Several of our Chapter members have lost their Mother recently. Our thoughts, prayers and sympathy go out to each of you.
There is no love like a mother's love, no stronger bond on earth. Like the precious bond that comes from God, to a mother when she gives birth. A mother's love is forever strong, never changing for all time. And when her children need her most, a mother's love will shine. God bless these special mothers, God bless them every one. For all the tears and heartache, and for the special work they've done. When her days on earth are over, a mother's love lives on. Through many generations, with God's blessings on each one.

IT’S NUTTIER THAN A…

David McClintock, Safety Officer

The Woodlands HOG Chapter run in the fall of 2010 went to the State of Arkansas…we called it “Run to the Ozarks”. It was a great run with tons of twisty Arkansas back roads, unique accommodations, excellent food and great fellowship with friends. On every Chapter vacation run there are tons of memories and experiences that make it stand alone. There are three things that make the Run to the Ozarks memorable to me…one of them will not be discussed here as I am still in litigation with the State of Arkansas regarding the improper engineering of one particular curve in the road (not really, but this may be topic for the future). The other two things that make this run memorable to me are; 1) this was Barbara’s first vacation run where she rode her own bike instead of being a passenger and; 2) some extreme weather Barbara and I encountered when we detoured from the group on the last two days. These two memories end up being intertwined so I’ll discuss them together. As I said, this was Barbara’s first vacation run as the operator of her own bike…she did a great job, covered the required miles each day, navigated all the twists and turns of some challenging roads and gained a lot of experience and confidence. Towards the end of the trip, we stayed Thursday night in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Basically the next two days of the Chapter vacation run would be the trip back home. Friday morning, Barbara and I needed to split from the group and take an alternate and longer route home via Llano, Texas. We have three young grandsons living in Llano that were having a group birthday party (age 1, 3 & 7) beginning at noon on Saturday …and you know “Granny” (a.k.a. Barbara) was not going to miss out on that…and they are expecting us to be there. Our plan was to ride 450 miles to Weatherford, Texas Friday and ride 180 miles to Llano Saturday morning in order to be there prior to the birthday party. As luck would have it, we awoke early Friday morning to fairly heavy rain in Eureka Springs. Knowing we had a long day ahead of us and after some deliberation, we decided it was time to put on the full rain gear and take off in the rain and still mostly dark. We said our goodbyes to everyone and by the time we left it was only a light to moderate rain. Personally, I enjoy riding in the rain, when it’s not cold, but Barbara will tell you, without hesitation, she does not like it. When you leave Eureka Springs heading toward Rogers, the road is narrow, very crooked and mostly downhill for several miles. When you add the rain and dark to narrow, crooked and downhill I was a little concerned about Barbara but we took our time and made it without any problem. Once we made it to Rogers, we hit major highways and although it rained on us off and on the rest of the way to Weatherford we pulled into our motel in time to clean up a little before dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant. As we reflected on the day, we felt pretty good about the ride and our decision to leave in the rain…little did we know what was in store for us the next morning. Saturday morning, 6:30 AM, we wake up to rain…steady rain…heavy rain…lightning and thunder. No way I wanted to ride a motorcycle in this, but surely it will pass by…as long as we leave by 9:00 AM we can get there in time for the birthday party. We get dressed, pack our bags and go eat some breakfast all the while it is pouring down rain. We go back to our room and check out the local radar again and it does not look good…lots of “RED” on the map over Weatherford and to the west…just where we need to go. By the time I decided to move our bikes under the awning so we could pack our gear it was close to 8:00 AM…the rain will just not stop. Our plan at this time was as soon as the heavy rain passed, we would get on the road. We sat around in our rain gear until now it was 8:30 AM and

still raining hard with lots of thunder and lightning...8:30 AM and still pitch dark outside…parking lot looked like a lake. Somewhere around 9:00 AM the rain let up a little, or so we thought. It was still quite dark but the rain was not so bad…at least we could now see the other side of the parking lot. We only needed to go west on I-20 for about 25 miles then south on Hwy 281. The radar showed better conditions not too far south of I-20 so it was time to make a decision…try it now or miss the party. My vote was “go”… Barbara’s vote was “NO”…”Granny’s” vote was “go”…2 to 1…here we go! (Barbara knew better but the “Granny” in her didn’t listen) As we take off and hit I-20 it’s not too bad…not good but doable. Two or three miles down I-20 we found where the heavy rain went… we ran right back into it. It was raining so hard we could not go over 45 MPH…and even at that speed you could barely see the road from the rain and it was still dark. Luckily, there was very little traffic on the road but unfortunately most of it was 18 wheelers. We were trying to maintain 45 MPH and the 18 wheelers were doing about 60 MPH…not a good mix. Every time they passed us we had to deal with spray and splash off of their tires…fun. The lightning and thunder continued…I actually found myself hoping for more frequent lightning as that was a good opportunity to see the road clearly. At one point, I hit an area of the roadway that had 2-3 inches of water standing on it. My bike slow down quickly as I hit the water and water sprayed everywhere…I never felt the tires lose contact with the road, but it was quite an uneasy feeling. I immediately looked back to find Barbara’s headlight, hoping it would keep pointing straight ahead…it did…good job! After hitting the high water, I wanted to find a place to get off the interstate and re-access the situation. Problem is there is not much on that section of I-20 and it took a while to find an exit with some cover. I finally came upon an exit that looked like it led to a station or store or something…still very difficult to see. We took the exit and all that was there was a shut down station but it did have a small awning where we could escape the rain. We stopped under the awning and I got off my bike to see how Barbara was doing…she stayed on hers and never got off. It was one of those rare, very rare, shockingly rare occasions when she did not have much to say. Really…she did not have much to say. So I attempted to get some information out of her: Question “Are you OK”?... Answer “I’m OK” Question “Did you hit that high water”?... Answer “What Do You Think”? Question “Can you see”?... Answer “NO”! Question “Anything I can do for you”?... Answer “NO”! Question “Do you still love me”?... Answer “Maybe” Question “What do you want to do”?... Answer “Keep Going”. Question “Are you sure”?... Answer “Yes”. So we kept going and eventually made it to Hwy 281 where we headed south. Within a few miles the rain lightened up and so did the sky. The farther south we went the better it got, in fact, by the time we were half way to Llano the sun popped out and it was actually nice the rest of the way. With a lot of luck, we made it to Llano in time for the party where Barbara had all afternoon to “Get Her Granny On”! Observations and Lessons Learned: 1. Sometimes it’s better decision to be late or not go at all. 2. When you observe “RED” on the radar it means heavy rain. 3. It’s great to have really good rain gear when you need it. 4. Heavy rain, lightning and thunder, interstates and 18 wheeler do not mix well. 5. Harley horns do not work when wet…had to replace both horns. 6. Some of the most memorable times are made under duress It’s NUTTY to deliberately ride in extreme weather conditions…In fact “IT’S NUTTIER THAN A PORT-O-POTTY AT A PEANUT FESTIVAL”! Granny Rules! — RIDE OFTEN; RIDE HARD; BUT RIDE SAFE!

Cure 2 Cancer Ride to Alaska (via... San Antonio, New Mexico, Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Idaho, Salt Lake, Denver, Spokane)
July 13 — August 14

"Every penny makes a dollar and you never know which dollar will find a Cure"
- Cookie Dupas
Harley's Angels is having a Cancer 2 Cure Ride to Nome Alaska and back. We are trying to raise $200,000 to be split between Harley's Angels and Fight Like a Girl. We will be leaving Houston on July 13 and the ride will return (we hope) on the 14th of August. On the first leg of the trip, Harley's Angels will be riding from Houston to San Antonio. Some will be going on to New Mexico. Riders from national HOG Chapters will be joining the ride along the route for a few miles, or a complete leg, and even the full ride to Alaska to support this great cause! All monies will be donated to MD Anderson here in Houston for research. We will be asking people that want to ride with us to donate at least $20. They will get a patch and have a great time. The ride will stop at least every 100 miles to help any Sportsters that are on the trip. It should be a great time!!! I can't wait. So far about 50 bikes will make the first leg and about 15 are going all the way - 10,350 miles in a month! The ride will travel the "Ice Road Truckers" road and see black bears and if lucky - POLAR BEARS!!! FUUUUNNNNNN! “Road Hog Smarts”

By Robert Lerma

Slow, Look, Lean and Roll
There are different opinions about ways to describe correct cornering (turning around a curve). One of the best ways is SLOW – LOOK – PRESS – and ROLL. Let’s review this in a little more detail: SLOW When coming up on a curve, start slowing your speed (approach speed) BEFORE the curve to a speed that you think will allow you to make the turn (entry speed). Many times, we roll off the throttle when approaching tighter curves. It’s important to remember to slow down with the bike in a straight line because that allows maximum braking effort when needed without sliding out. The best course of action is to apply BOTH brakes in addition to rolling off the throttle. Braking with both brakes is highly suggested because rolling off the throttle acts as braking only to the rear wheel. Using both brakes conserves traction to both wheels. LOOK Before you start pulling G forces around the curve, turn your head in the direction of your curve so that you can see where you are going. The key is to TURN YOUR HEAD. PRESS AND ROLL After having slowed down BEFORE the curve, press the handgrip in the direction of the curve so that you can lean into the curve. Press left, go left, press right, go right. Now what about that rolling thing you ask? Rolling on the throttle helps balance weight between the front and rear portions of your bike. This also helps to stabilize the bike in the middle of its suspension. If you hold the throttle steady, what usually happens is that your bike will wobble as it changes lean angles during decreasing and increasing radius turns. Slowing in a curve is just like applying the brakes. If your lean angle is insufficient for the tight curve and you begin to weave out of your intended path of travel, the tendency is to use the brakes. This can lead to a highside (when you are thrown over your bike in the opposite direction of your turn) if you are going too fast or you can low side (falling in the direction of your turn) if going too slow. NEVER EVER brake during a curve. Let’s keep the road gremlins as far away as possible!! CORNERING LINES Now there are a number of us who get a little freaky about leaning our machines over too far thinking that the bike may drop. One advantage of two-wheelers is their ability to follow a path of travel, or line, that is different from the curve of the pavement. The straighter the curves the less risk of a slide out. The important thing to remember here is that a sudden change in steering direction demands more traction and eats up ground clearance. This is known as dragging bike parts (I hate it when that happens). So, try to decide as soon as possible when coming up to a curve, where the curves are going and then remember: SLOW-LOOK-PRESS and ROLL. Until next time, ride aggressively safe and I’ll see ya’ll on the next run…
