Marijuana Should be Legalized

“Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction”, said Bob Marley when he
wanted to create a new idea about marijuana. Marijuana is considered as an illegal drug in
many countries, but without real reasons for being cataloged like that. Perhaps, there are
several reasons why marijuana should be legalized: Freedom to choose what we want to
consume, it is not an addictive drug, and it could be used for medical purposes. It is
incredible to think that worst drugs, like alcohol and tobacco, are legal.
Many people think that marijuana can induce the consumption of hard drugs. What
they do not know is that the dealers, who seal it, persuade the consumer in order to taste other
drugs. A dealer seems to be a good person and offers the best price. But reality is that he
wants money, and he tries everything to seal more expensive drugs. Also, he does not care
neither the health of the consumer nor his economy. That is why; researches rebut the idea
that marijuana induces the consumption of other drugs. It is completely natural, so it is not
the real causative of trying hard drugs.
The marijuana’s natural component, that produces the altered state of consciousness,
is THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). This chemical is well accepted by the human body, do not
cause any secondary effect as alcohol or nicotine do, and is not addictive. On the other hand,
tobacco with nicotine, coffee with caffeine, and drinks with alcohol are drugs that cause
addiction and are legal. How inconsistent is that? Also, psychologists support that addiction
exists when the relationship between the consumption and problems exist. Indeed, people that
use marijuana for recreational or medical purposes, do not experiment addiction because they
do not create that relationship.

Marijuana has been used for medical purposes for thousands of years. Only a few
know really well the benefits of this plant, but with legalization all of us will understand
marijuana’s benefits. It is proved that marijuana can be used as medicine. For example,
marijuana helps to stimulate appetite and relieve nausea in cancer and AIDS patients. Also,
with legalization, many laboratories will have the permissions to study it, and they will found
many others uses for this plant.
Other reason that marijuana should be legalized is that a person has freedom to choose
what they want to consume, and neither the government nor the society has to be against of
that. Government’s limitations for marijuana are not so good. For instance, governments have
a right to limit individual actions if the actions pose a significant threat to the individual or
endanger someone else. But these limits do not apply to marijuana use. For example, alcohol
has killed thousands of people in a year, but nobody has ever been killed by marijuana use.
Also, as we saw, marijuana is not addictive. So it does not cause threat to the individual that
consume it.
It is always difficult to talk about drugs, and there will always exist the debate for
legalize them or not. It is known that some drugs are bad for health, they lead to the
consumption of other drugs, are addictive, and in some cases they cause deaths. It is not a
surprise that marijuana, a natural plant, does not fit in this list. I think that the real question
we have to ask is why marijuana should be illegal? As we see, there are no real reasons for
being illegal. So the question is not difficult to answer: marijuana should be legal.
