So I have my little catamaran up for sale, but I’m torn about the idea of selling it. These boats become like people - like dear friends. Anyone who’s ever owned a boat and cruised around a bit knows that they take on human qualities beyond the age-old “she” thing. I went over to the mast up storage the other day to check on the boat. It made me sad because I haven’t sailed her much lately and I know boats hate that. “Yeah, so I have you in the classiﬁeds,” I said meekly, in a low voice, kicking a couple of pebbles on the parking lot ground – not making eye contact… She looked away. “It’s not you…it’s me, I...I just haven’t had the time lately and…well, you know…” We sat in silence for what seemed like an hour when the catamaran ﬁnally broke the silence, “I just sit here baking in the sun all day, wondering if you’re going to come see me.” “I’ve been busy,” I said, knowing it wasn’t completely true. “And no offense, but your trampoline is falling apart and your trailer tires are ﬂat as pancakes.” She began to cry, knowing she was growing old. At this point, wrought with emotion, I took off my pants and we made love like two impassioned teenagers right there in the parking lot. Sure it was weird. Anyway, you know what I mean? They become almost like people… you know?

Marina del Rey boat builder from the late sixties to the early eighties, Ted Elliot died this month at his home in Oregon. Elliot and his crew built more than 23 yachts over 20 years and they were regarded as top quality vessels. “He was the premium guy here,” said Willie Hjorth from the Marina del Rey Historical Society. “His boats went to the next level of elegance and design. They were deﬁnitely the cream of the crop”

AVALON, Catalina Island, Calif. - Years ago Phillip Winter, a San Diego native, boated and hiked around Catalina Island’s Emerald Bay as a boy scout. He’s been sailing, ﬁshing and diving around the island ever since. Now, as the new Harbormaster at Santa Catalina Island’s Two Harbors, he will play an important role in the inner workings of the island he has always loved. With his two sons in college, he looks forward to spending time on and under the water with his wife and daughter in Two Harbors.
In the mid to late sixties when Marina del Rey was brand new, the area near Lincoln blvd and Maxella, where Odyssey Video and Starbucks are now located, was known as the “boulevard of boats”. It was here that Elliot produced his powerboats that commanded respect throughout the industry. In the early eighties Ted closed up shop and headed up north where he ﬁshed, went to church and spent time with family and friends.

WI R E Dive Service Goes the Extra Mile
It’s that time of year again, with the winter storms and Santa Ana winds approaching, bringing with them all the storm drain debris that gets washed into Marina del Rey from Ballona Creek. Last year, S&K Dive Service provided a free cleanup of F and G basin throughout the winter on a biweekly basis. This year, in order to be more effective, S&K will have an emergency response team of divers in dinghy’s removing the trash after every storm event. Anyone who has walked around the marina after a storm or after the Santa Ana winds has noticed the abundance of garbage that accumulates on the leeward side of the marina, closest to Lincoln Blvd. This is the storm runoff coming from Ballona Creek. For years this garbage has simply washed back out to sea as the tides change, presumably to join the other trash in the “Great Paciﬁc Garbage Patch.” In an effort to stem the amount of garbage that ends up ﬂoating out of the marina and to help keep the oceans blue, S&K Dive Service will continue to provide this annual pro bono public service to clean the marina waters. The Coastal Cleanups and Kayak Cleanups are great traditions that make an enormous impact on the amount of garbage on our beaches and in our oceans. But with the amount of trash that comes down Ballona Creek from across the Los Angeles basin, these yearly efforts only make a dent in the problem. There still continues to be ﬂoating garbage that accumulates in the marina throughout the year, and particularly when there is a storm. S&K Dive has been servicing boats since 1974, with divers continually in the water, and has seen the problem grow. The winter is particularly bad, when the rains and winds make the amount of garbage ending up in the water the greatest. According to S&K Dive’s Paul Skipper, “We want to help keep the water clean, because we’re diving in it every day.” Starting in November and continuing into the New Year, S&K will be sending crews to remove the surface garbage that is ﬂoating in the marina. This will be in addition to the current efforts by the County and will be done as a free service to enhance the public’s enjoyment of the marina. Look for the crews after a storm when the cleanup is in progress and give the divers a big “thank you.” And you can always stop by S&K Dive for your free water bottle to reduce plastic waste.

MARINA DEL REY-- Last month over 14,131 volunteers (a new record) from all over Los Angeles took action to rid beaches and inland waterways of unsightly and sometimes harmful debris. Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) is an international event with over 90 countries around the world participating, making it one of the largest volunteer efforts on the plane. This year, volunteers cleaned up 101 miles of coastline in Los Angeles County, and removed/prevented 103,524 pounds of trash from entering Santa Monica Bay. California Coastal Cleanup Day is coordinated in Los Angeles County by Heal the Bay in conjunction with the California Coastal Commission and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. The event began in 1985 as a way to combat the increasing marine debris along our shorelines and grew to an international effort that, according to Heal the Bay, is the largest volunteer day on the planet.

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation also got involved in the day hosting the only kayak cleanup site in Los Angeles. Local businesses (UCLA Marina Aquatic Center, Boat Rentals of America, Boys & Girls Club of Venice, & Sport Chalet) donated kayaks for volunteers to use in order to pick up marine debris that had already made it into the ocean.
This year there were 125 volunteers in kayaks helping to clean up the marina. An additional 30 volunteers helped on land, creating the largest turnout for Marina del Rey ever, with 165 volunteers total. These people, on land and sea, removed 327 pounds of trash from Marina del Rey, including recyclable items, ﬁshing line and equipment, and even 15 pounds of dog waste in biodegradable bags. Holiday Boat Parade Partners with Charity Organization
The Marina del Rey Holiday Boat Parade and the Portraits of Hope have partnered for the 48th Annual Holiday Boat Parade scheduled for Saturday, December 11th. This year’s theme is “A Rock ‘n Roll Christmas” commencing at 6 p.m. in the main channel of Marina del Rey. The Portraits of Hope “Summer of Color” exhibition transformed 156 Los Angeles County Lifeguard towers into a massive public art and civic project along Los Angeles County beaches from Malibu to Palos Verdes. Its success was due to the efforts of nearly 6,000 children in schools, hospitals and social service programs along with 2,500 adult volunteers who participated in painting the brightly colored panels for the walls and roof tops of the towers. Portraits of Hope provided children and adults facing cancer, burn trauma, spinal injuries, HIV/AIDS, head and brain injuries as well as other serious medical issues, the innovative project. Specialized brushes were developed for patients unable to manipulate a brush with their hands or with limited or no movement in their arms and legs to paint the panels. After the beach exhibition, the art panels will be removed from the towers and donated to participating institutions and social service agencies around the world to beautify interior and exterior facilities. Many of the panels will be shipped to Haiti for transitional homes, temporary shelters, schools, hospitals and senior centers. A limited amount of panels will be auctioned off during the fundraising cruise Thursday, October 7th. Photos taken of the multi-colored lifeguard towers will also be available for purchase. The Grand Marshall and prizes for the event have yet to be announced, but in years past winners have won trips to Hawaii, Japan and many other exotic spots. Grand Marshalls have been famous actors, local weathermen, prominent politicians, celebrated adventurers and many more stand out ﬁgures. ANNAPOLIS, Md., August 12, 2010 - On the afternoon of July 25th, a fast moving storm packing 70 mph winds, rain and lighting swept across the Chesapeake Bay. Over the next two hours, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Baltimore, MD, received 37 calls from mariners in distress. Unfortunately many boaters and anglers, unaware of the supercell’s fury, were caught unprepared. But it didn’t have to be this way. Today there are dozens of hi-tech ways to receive up-to-the-minute weather information aboard your boat. The BoatUS Foundation recently reviewed 28 products and services to see which provided mariners with the best information and has issued its recommendations for its top “picks.” “Sometimes bad weather can approach with few visual signs,” said Program Manager David Carter. “Having these resources available can complement your VHF radio’s weather broadcast.” The review, which covered satellite and phone-based weather services for the coastal inshore and inland boater, included free cellular phone text messaging services to fee-based subscription services that display weather information on a chartplotter. Each weather service includes hardware, such as a standard ﬂip phone, smart phone, computer or chartplotter, as well as the software designed to present the information. Foundation staff limited their focus to the actual content and depth of weather information provided. This included the ability to deliver local, landbased weather information (current conditions such as temperature, wind or barometric readings), hazardous weather warnings, radar imagery, land and marine forecasts, and NOAA buoy reports. n 1924, a small herd of about 14 buffalo were brought to Catalina Island for a silent ﬁlm called The Vanishing American. At the time, there was no term or concept of “invasive species” and when the ﬁlming wrapped, they left the bison to enjoy island life. Today, descendants of this Hollywood herd still roam the Catalina countryside, but their presence has become quite a bit more complicated.

According to the conservancy the birth control program cold be a win-win for all involved. “This birth control doesn’t affect the females and doesn’t affect the males,” Rhein said. “It just makes it very difﬁcult for the sperm to get into the eggs. “We did a scientiﬁc study several years ago and determined that 150-200 bison are good for the island and good for the bison.” To some, the idea of interfering with nature’s intentions doesn’t sit well. Darrell Geist, habitat coordinator for the Buffalo Field Campaign, a nonproﬁt group dedicated to protecting the last wild bison herd in the United States at Yellowstone National Park told the LA Times: “When you intervene with natural selection, you are unraveling a very complex relationship among herd animals, particularly among matriarchal females 2010
By the early seventies, the Catalina group grew in numbers to around 600 individuals and in time ofﬁcials began to realize, for a multitude of reasons, the small island couldn’t sustain so many large buffalo. Through the years, the conservancy has made controversial decisions regarding non-indigenous animals. One such decision involved hiring professional gunmen to pick off goats and pigs that were, like the buffalo, threatening native plant life and fauna that the conservancy is committed to protecting. But they assert that if the buffalo population can be kept under 200, they’re willing to trade the damage they inﬂict for the charm/tourist attraction they bring to the area. “Even though the Conservancy has had to remove other invasive species, the bison have become part of the historical fabric of the island,” said Bob Rhein spokesman for the Conservancy. “We don’t have any long term

and bulls who compete for those females.” This is evidently a risk the conservancy is willing to take. They are committed to the program because they both believe in the science and because shipping buffalo off the island, which they have been doing in recent years, is very expensive. Regardless of politically correct public statements, there are some who believe the herd is nothing but a hindrance to the conservancy and if they had their way, the buffalo would be gone. “It is obvious to all who know the ways of the conservancy that their goal is to exterminate the buffalo - same as the goats and pigs, deer etcetera it’s their dogma,” said a long-time Catalina patron who asked to not be identiﬁed. When confronted with the topic of the goat and pig eradication Rhein paused and said pensively, “They had to go…I think we made the best decision for the island.” The conservancy is hopeful the birth control program goes according to plan for the island’s sake and for the health of the buffalo as well. Seven
or eight years ago there was a study that revealed that Catalina bison were a bit smaller than their mainland cousins and not as well nourished. At the time of the research there were around 350 animals inhabiting the island. In drought wrought years food and water aren’t as abundant and their health can suffer. Aware of this, the conservancy monitors them and steps in when necessary. “Their our responsibility,” Rhein said. “In a time of great drought when there really wasn’t anything for them to eat – we have and we would put out hay for them and make sure the old water troughs around the island are ﬁlled with water.” Other than population issues Rhein stresses that while the buffalo are relatively docile, it’s important that Catalina visitors keep their distance. Years back a teenager was antagonizing one of the animals and was subsequently attacked. Rhein said that if you were to see a bull standing around grazing, all should be well, but there are instances where calves are present and extra caution should be observed.

They have busy forums, great discussions and helpful tips regarding the Southern California ﬁshing scene. My reel was in pretty good shape prior to disassembly. But you can tell from the picture below that there is still some sand that got its way into the bail attachment point. Clean this area thoroughly and lube with a general lubricant like Daiwa Blue Grease before reassembling. Bail partly open:

Five: Bail and Bail Spring Assembly The bail itself is very simple to remove. Once the line roller is disassemble, only one screw is left holding the bail. Unscrew to remove the bail completely.
The bail spring assembly is located on the same side of the bail as the line roller. Usually there is some sort of cover that protects the spring assembly from the elements. Below is the reel with the bail spring cover removed but the spring assembly still in place.
Notice in the above pic how the fully compressed bail spring shaft interacts with the bail trip. Now detach the bail arm. This assembly is spring-loaded so be careful. The bail spring assembly should be in the position shown below. Notice the orientation of the pin.
This area is a real sand collector on my reels. The cover on my reel is chrome plastic. So instead of using white gas which may mar or distort the plastic, I simply rinse this part off in running water.
Important: Although I’ve shown the complete removal of the bail, I recommend that you work in subassemblies. In other words, after taking the line roller apart and cleaning it, put it back together before taking off the other end of the bail. This is always a safe strategy. The less loose parts you have at any one time means you have fewer parts to lose and fewer reassembly steps to forget. 18

The spring assembly itself is dumped into the white gas to clean. This is the only way to completely remove sand that is imbedded in grease. Once the parts are cleaned and dry, they are regreased and reassembled. For proper reassembly, the pin must ﬁt in the hole so you may have to compress the bail shaft spring slightly to accomplish this. Your reel should now have a smoothly functioning bail and line roller.
Reassembly can be a little tricky. One good way is to hold the spring and lever together and place them partially on the shaft as shown below.
Gently guide the straight end of the spring into position. Rotate the lever clockwise, seat the lever fully and screw it back on.
The fall bite is on! We still have squid and ﬁn bait along the coast and over at the islands, it’s kind of unusual – so enjoy it while it lasts. Even though the weather patterns have been unpredictable, white seabass and yellowtail are around and we’re hoping they hang on for a while longer. Santa Monica Bay has been producing a little bit of every species lately and both ends of the bay have had decent spots wherever there are kelp beds. If your ﬁshing structures outside the breakwall, the bass bite has been good. Don’t put your top-water gear away just yet – it’s the time of the year to keep both bottom and top-water gear handy. The lobster season opener had mixed reviews depending on location. I had limits over at Catalina while diving, but results varied. Not to worry, we have a long season ahead of us to ﬁnd those spots. Currently water temps are holding in the 60s – not bad, all things considered. On the bait scene: Larry and Mike over at Inseine Baits have cured sardines and squid. I’m still ﬁshing down around San Diego for tuna as long as they hang around
Six: Bail Trip Assembly Note: The following has only been veriﬁed for Daiwa spinning reels (Capricorn & Samurai). Other manufacturers/models may differ. Please refer to your reel’s schematic BEFORE messing with this assembly. For more advanced reel-tweakers, let’s revisit the bail trip assembly. On the a simple reel such as a Daiwa Samurai, it can be as simple as two components: the bail trip lever and the bail trip spring. There may also be a washer or two in the mix. Make a note of the order of each piece as you disassemble. Note the orientation of both ends of the spring, in relation to each other and in relation to the lever. The spring is compressed in the pic in the next below. Seven: Other Tips Another really quick maintenance ﬁx that is commonly overlooked is the handle. A quick shot of lubricant such as Corrosion-X between the plastic paddle and shaft it rotates on will do wonders in restoring the smoothness of your reel. If the paddle shaft is really gunked up, dip the paddle in white gas and stir. Remove, let dry and relubricate using Corrosion-X.
Remove and clean as necessary. The picture below shows how the bail trip spring and bail trip lever are oriented to each other prior to reassembly.
The above maintenance procedures should cover a reel that has not been dumped in the ocean and has been rinsed with fresh water after each saltwater use. If you still have a rough-shod reel after performing the above steps, you may have to remove the rotor and/ or crack the body and have a look at the main gears. We’ll save that for next time!

The blast of the starting gun for the Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallart Race, scheduled for February 2011 will go unheard at least for the time being. In a public statement the Del Rey Yacht Club has decided to hold off on the running of the long standing international race: “After much discussion and careful deliberation, it was the decision of the Committee to postpone the PV ’11 Race until conditions for successfully staging a long-distance Regatta are more favorable. “Due to the uncertain economy, we do not have enough paid entries to warrant the time and expense of running a race of this kind. Going hand in hand with the economic situation, it has been difﬁcult to get sponsorships and ads even with the help of a professional sponsorship company. “The Mexican Airline bankruptcy has also discouraged many of our members, including key chairmen, from participating in this race. The resultant increase in air fares makes the cost extremely difﬁcult for many who desire to participate in the activities in Puerto Vallarta. The difﬁculty of obtaining escort vessels has also created additional problems for starting and ﬁnishing the four races and coordinating the communications, computations and parties in route. The perceived problem of “Mexican Violence” was also very discouraging. In summation, the PV ’11 Executive Committee felt it would be ﬁnancially irresponsible to continue past this point in preparation for this race.” The Marina del Rey to Puerto Vallarta race has been running since the early 70s and is regarded as one of the most established international long distance races on the West Coast. For years Roy Disney in his famous Pyewacket and Doug Baker in Magnitude 80 would race down the coast attempting to break a twenty year speed record set by Joss, which Baker eventually did. Recently, organizers decided to make the race more cruising friendly instead of competing with some other long distance Mexican races being hosted by other clubs down the coast. Anti-ethanol Boaters take a hit with recent EPA decision
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has now waived a limitation on selling fuel that is more than 10 percent ethanol for model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks. The waiver applies to fuel that contains up to 15 percent ethanol – known as E15 – and only to model year 2007 and newer cars and light trucks. This represents the ﬁrst of a number of actions that are needed from federal, state and industry towards commercialization of E15 gasoline blends. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson made the decision after a review of the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) extensive testing and other available data on E15’s impact on engine durability and emissions. This decision has got some boating advocacy groups aggressively asking for more testing before E 15 makes it’s way into the general fuel supply. Large numbers of boaters have been impacted by 10% ethanol in their gasoline, which was rolled out nationwide a few years ago. A solvent, ethanol can degrade fuel systems and harm boat engines. Boaters around the country have reported engine breakdowns, some leading to expensive repairs and potential safety issues. Prior to the EPA’s announcement, Followthescience.org stated: “More than 22,000 Americans have e-mailed President Obama urging him to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from approving a 50 percent increase in the amount of ethanol in gasoline until comprehensive, independent and objective scientiﬁc testing can show that higher ethanol levels will not increase air pollution, harm engines or raise consumer safety issues.” “A broken-down car on the side of the road is one thing; a boat stranded at sea is an entirely different matter,” said Thom Dammrich, President of the National Marine Manufacturers Association in an editorial piece for TheHill.com. “We also know that higher-level ethanol blends make boat engines run at a higher temperature, increasing emissions of smog-forming pollutants. There are serious consumer safety, warranty, product liability and air quality concerns that EPA and policymakers have not fully thought through, in their haste, to support the ethanol industry.” “We are extremely disappointed that EPA is allowing this fuel to enter the market without the appropriate scientiﬁc data or consumer and environmental safeguards,” Dammrich said regarding the EPA’s announcement. “This decision not only adversely impacts marine manufacturers, but creates a signiﬁcant risk of misfueling for the nation’s 66 million boaters who will be left ‘holding the bag’ for performance issues and expensive repairs. We are astonished that EPA has decided to move forward with a fuel that will increase air pollution and damage hundreds of millions of existing products. In the coming months, NMMA and other organizations will review EPA’s pump label rulemaking and explore additional options to protect the boating community and marine manufacturers from incompatible fuels like E15.”

especially knowing how much to grind back into the hull and whether you would need to use laminations or just a good quality ﬁller for the repair. There is a wealth of information in boating literature and the internet, you can also ask the staff of the haulout facility who are always willing to advise. If you don’t feel up to the task then probably best to get a professional at the haulout facility to do the work. Should I have a gel peel to get rid of the blisters?

Osmotic Blisters can be a very worrying sight for the boat owner, however, a good percentage of blisters that we see are purely cosmetic and render no immediate harm to the structure or sea worthiness of the vessel. It ‘s only in the cases of the larger blisters that hold liquid or have become open that require attention. Is it just older boats that get blisters, or do the newer models have them also? Landt: Any GRP/Fiberglass boat can develop blisters, they can come from the way the boat was fabricated at manufacture, or inadequate protection of the hull bottom in the water. The older boats do tend to have more blister problems, we have seen some blister issues in the newer boats. Originally boatbuilders used polyester resins for fabrication, since the late 80’s, vinylester or epoxy resins are used and have generally cut down on the amount of blister problems. Can I repair the blisters myself, or is this best left to a professional? Landt: Blister repair can be a little tricky, 2010
Landt: Some boatyards still do gel peels, it’s a very costly venture and you lose the use of your boat for a good chunk of time as they have to let the hull laminations dry out. I would not recommend this route unless the hull bottom is completely covered in blisters and you love the boat that much. There is still no absolute guarantee that there will be no more blister problems. At Windward Yacht Center we recommend isolated blister repairs and just moniter the smaller ones at each haulout. Once the hull has had the blisters removed and repaired, what is the best way to prevent further problems? Landt: If you have just taken care of isolated blisters, then 2 coats of a 2 part epoxy primer over the repaired areas before bottom painting is adequate to seal the repairs. If you have repaired areas all over the hull bottom, then it may be worth to strip off the remaining bottom paint to the gelcoat, sand the bottom, then apply a barrier coat of 2 part epoxy primer, usually 3 coats, and then chemical link it to the bottom paint. Again there is no guarantee against more blisters appearing in the future. Also it is always advisable to have the boat hauled at least every 3 years and have new antifouling paint applied, and have a reputable dive service to do regular cleaning and advise you of any problems with the boat bottom. If whatever it is gets really bad, bring a bag of your poop into the doctor and let them read through it and tell you what’s up. I have no idea how they can decipher the code that’s inside my waste, but they can.
