Scrappy Marlins thankful
for win over Miners
--------------------------------------------Wollongong,NSW- The Townsville Marlins were able to
overcome a plucky Wollongong Miners 16-14 at Win
Stadium. Wollongong were plucky because they were able
to over turn a 13-0 halftime deficit with a much
improved performance in the second half. "We were very
disappointing, especially being at home. We wanted to be
undefeated, we wanted to protect our fortress but the
first half effort was not us" said Coach Steve O'Dea
after the game.
Wollongong could not get anything going.
Halfback Francis Elliott partially dislocated his
shoulder and was not seen until after half time. In the
meantime the Miners had virtually no offence, twice
going three and out and also coughing up an interception
and a fumble.
Townsville were also far from their best but
they were good enough to capitalise with two field goals
and then a deep ball to Kennan Allen who scored from 16
yards out. "I thought 13 was not enough for the
dominance we showed. It was goo to win but we need to
get better. We are still learning, still evolving" Chris
Simpson said. Patrick Gill was again far from 100% and
he struggled. So too JP Gutherson who only caught1 pass
all night.
The Miners rallied in the second half and took
their opening two drives in for scores, giving them an
unlikely 14-13 lead. But the Marlins steadied with a 12
play drive and Ngataua Grahem was on the money with the
winner with 7m22 remaining in the game.
