The Evesham Township Coun-
cil held its regular action meeting
with a packed house on Tuesday,
Jan. 22.
Mayor Randy Brown discussed
a privately held school summit
with Evesham Fire and Rescue,
the Evesham Township Board of
Education, Lenape Regional High
School District representatives
and police representatives.
Brown felt the need to hold the
summit following the tragedy at
Sandy Hook Elementary School
in Newtown, Conn.
According to Brown, they are
currently working behind the
scenes on school security at
schools of all levels to ensure
safety.
“You’re going to start hearing
more publicly once we’ve come
up with a plan,” said Brown.

A banner hangs between the
columns of the Evesham Town-
ship Municipal Building congrat-
ulating mayor and kicking coach
of the AFC champion Baltimore
Ravens, Randy Brown.
The longtime coach will be
traveling to New Orleans this
weekend to coach in his first-ever
Super Bowl with the Baltimore
Ravens, as they take on the San
Francisco 49ers.
Brown has 21 years of NFL ex-
perience under his belt. He had
previously attended a Super Bowl
against the New England Patriots
as a consultant for the Philadel-
phia Eagles during the 2004 sea-
son. The Ravens beat the Patriots
on Jan. 20 to move on to the Super
Bowl.
Last year, Brown left the
Ravens after the season conclud-
ed after his one-year contract ex-
pired.
In June, Brown was working
with the San Francisco 49ers dur-
ing mini-camp with head coach
Jim Harbaugh.
The Ravens later rehired
Brown full-time this season, and
he is working closely with head
coach John Harbaugh.
Despite employment with both
teams, Brown will only receive a
championship ring if the Ravens
come out on top.
This Super Bowl is the first of
its kind, with brothers on oppo-
site ends of the field vying for the
Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Multiple sports media outlets
are using social media platforms
to encourage fans to come up
with a catchy name for the
unique matchup like the “Har-

The Evesham Township Board
of Education meeting was cut
short on Friday, Jan. 25, following
the collapse of school board presi-
dent Sandy Student.
Student excused himself mid-
way through a presentation be-
fore collapsing in the hallway just
outside the meeting.
An EMT was in attendance and
tended to Student’s needs until an
ambulance arrived.
“We do understand that he’s
been released from the hospital.
He will be getting additional test-
ing done,” said superintendent of
schools John Scavelli later in the
week.
The meeting resumed after
Student’s transportation to the
hospital.
“I would ask the board to con-
sider the consent agenda on the
rest of the items this evening,”
said Scavelli before moving the
meeting forward.
During Scavelli’s report, he
noted changes the district is tak-
ing to ensure security throughout
the schools.
The decision to upgrade locks
and change the two-way radio
system come following the
tragedy at Sandy Hook Elemen-
tary School.
The total cost of the locks up-
grade will cost the district $64,732
and will not cut into the budget,
according to Scavelli. The money
will come from state funds previ-
ously awarded to the board.
Additionally, the cost of the
two-way radio system will be
$3,079 per month under a State
contract.
Scavelli did not wish to provide
further details pertaining to fur-
ther upgrades in the district due
to security.
The district recently attended a
privately held school summit
with Evesham Fire and Rescue,
the Lenape Regional High School
District representatives and po-
lice representatives.
“We’re going to meet on it next
month just to make sure we’re
doing everything possible to keep
our children safe,” Mayor Randy
Brown said during the Jan. 22
township council meeting.
Scavelli provided an update on
budget planning.
The board will be planning to
add a new language teacher, new
iPads, student achievement and
curriculum planning in addition

T
he problems facing the U.S.
Postal Service have been well
documented. Primarily, the
service will run out of money later
this year unless reforms are put in
place.
Unfortunately for the Postal Service,
it’s up to Congress to make those
changes. Good luck with that. If histo-
ry is any indication, at best it can hope
for a quick fix about 30 seconds before
the clock expires.
The Postal Service is losing millions
of dollars each day. A number of fixes
had been presented, including closing
some facilities, ending Saturday deliv-
ery and getting back some of the
money that the Service has con-
tributed to future retirees’ benefits.
Problem is, legislation addressing
these and other issues died when the
new Congress was sworn in earlier
this month. Now, everything has to
start again from scratch.
Pretty much all of the ideas put
forth, and some that haven’t gained
that much notoriety, hold merit. Los-
ing Saturday service wouldn’t be such
a terrible thing. It’s probable that some
consolidation among facilities is possi-
ble. And the Service makes a good
point when it asks for a return of the
benefits money, something that is
unique to the Service.
It’s also possible to continue to mod-
ernize, finding ways to place more
services online, for example. Even
more creative: sell advertising on
postage stamps.
Whatever the bundle of solutions
eventually looks like, it’s fairly certain
that, despite talk to the contrary, Con-
gress will be in no hurry to do much of
anything. We just got past another “fis-
cal cliff” and debt-limit deadlines are
approaching quickly.
Unfortunately for the Postal Service,
and the millions of Americans who de-
pend on it, a decision probably won’t
come anytime soon.
in our opinion
Starting over
The Postal Service has a new Congress and little time before money runs out
Postal problems
The U.S. Postal Service saw legislation
to fix at least some of its problems die
when the new Congress took office.
Now it has to start all over again. Given
Congress’ penchant for dragging its
feet on just about everything, no on
should anticipate a resolution to this
issue anytime soon.
Bowl,” the “Supbro Bowl” and the “Super-
baugh.”
“They’re so much alike in their tenacity,
the way they coach and their aggressive-
ness,” said Brown, noting the biggest dif-
ference between the two coaches is that
Jim played in the NFL and John did not.
“They’re both so great to coach for and
work for. They’re both successful at what
they do, that it’s hard for me to point out
the biggest difference. They’re both great.”
Brown plans to treat the Super Bowl like
any other game. To him, this is just anoth-
er week, another away game.
His plan is to continue his away pre-
game regimen of a three and a half mile
run, stretching, breakfast, and an hour nap
before traveling to the stadium three hours
prior to kickoff.
Once at the stadium, Brown walks the
field to take notes.
“I’m approaching it like an everyday
NFL game because I have to,” he said. “You
want to prepare for the game the same way
you prepare for any other game. I believe
by preparing for it the same, the players
won’t see any change in you. They’re the
ones that matter most.”
The Super Bowl stage is gargantuan.
Last year, the game drew approximately
111.3 million viewers, according to the
Nielsen Co.
The numbers and television statistics
don’t have an adverse effect on the coach
with a serious game on the line.
“You’re still on a 100-yard field. The play-
ers are still kicking a field goal between 18-
feet six inches,” said Brown. “When you’re
in the stadium and you’re on the field, the
magnitude of the game is different. You’re
still only playing in front of 70,000 people,
the number of people watching it on TV
doesn’t factor in.”
The sibling rivalry of this year’s game
has made Brown want a similar experi-
ence. Brown would like to coach against
his brother, former National Champi-
onship coach at the University of Delaware
and current coach at Eastern High School,
Rick Brown.
According to Brown, his brother is not
currently looking for an NFL job, especial-
ly because, “he really likes what he is
doing.”
“He coaches Joe Flacco’s brother,
Tommy Flacco, at Eastern High School,
and me and Joe are with the Ravens,” said
Brown. “Small world.”
Brown will take to the field with the
Ravens on Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. on CBS against
the 49ers.
“After the way it ended last year, to have
it this year… It’s just awesome,” Brown
said.

Super Bowl XLVII kicks off at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 3
The following reports are on
file with the Evesham Police De-
partment:
On Jan. 22, at 1:30 p.m., the Eve-
sham Police Department respond-
ed to a residence in the unit block
of Sycamore Avenue for a report
of gunfire.
Responding officers located a
male walking on Sycamore Av-
enue who matched the descrip-
tion given by a witness.
That male advised officers that
he had a dispute over money with
a male subject at a home in the
unit block of Sycamore Avenue.
During the argument, the male
displayed a rifle and fired in his
direction. The resident continued
to point the weapon at the male
until he walked off the property.
Evesham Police quickly shut
down Sycamore Avenue and es-
tablished a perimeter around the
house.
The suspect yelled out a first
floor window to officers, stating
he wasn’t coming out of the
house.
At that time, the male was con-
sidered an armed barricaded sus-
pect and the New Jersey State Po-
lice “TEAMS” Unit was contacted
and asked to deploy a SWAT team
to the incident location.
Prior to the arrival of the
SWAT Team, the suspect agreed
to peacefully surrender.
The suspect then exited the
home and was taken into custody
by Evesham Police. The home
was cleared by township police
and secured pending application
for a search warrant. The area
was then reopened to traffic.
Later in the evening, a search
warrant was executed at the sus-
pect’s home on Sycamore Avenue.
During the search six guns,
ammunition, ballistic vests and
narcotics were seized.
The suspect, age 26, of Marlton,
was charged with second-degree
aggravated assault and second-de-
gree possession of a weapon for
an unlawful purpose.
He was lodged in the Burling-
ton County Jail in default of
$75,000 full cash bail.

little value, according to Barron.
Additionally, he has been in
contact with Medford for talks
about expanding the property,
which has been met with enthusi-
asm.
There are wetlands around the
property, creating building issues.
Brown stated the township had
gone through dealing with the
property before with the pro-
posed Lowes Super Center.
“I’m comfortable adding the
project to redevelopment,” said
Brown, with council’s full sup-
port.
Proclamations
Proclamations were given out
to all of the fifth grade student
government winners from De-
Masi Middle School, Jaggard
School, Marlton Elementary, Rice
Elementary, Beeler School, Evans
School and Van Zant School.
Brown mentioned all of the
council members were respective
students of the above listed
schools before attending Chero-
kee High School.
Each student council spoke to
Brown about its process from vot-
ing to what each president prom-
ised.
Most promised a day a month
without homework, pitching
ways to bring back sports teams
and multiple service projects
throughout the year.
Students from the various
schools collected coins for Hurri-
cane Sandy victims, they collect-
ed clothes and one class made
peanut butter and jelly sandwich-
es for the homeless.
Additionally, Scout Master Joe
Stoddart was presented with a
proclamation for his service in
the Boy Scouts since 2004.
During his service, he had
worked with 19 Eagle Scouts.
The mayor joked with Stoddart
for wearing 49ers gear on his
Scout outfit, the team Brown will
be facing on Super Bowl Sunday.
Stoddart will still be active
with the Scouts following his re-
tirement, just not at the same
level, he said.
