The Lazy Hazy Summer Days Exhibi-
tion opened at the Center for the Arts in
Southern New Jersey on Aug. 6 with pic-
tures and paintings of shorelines and sea
birds.
The exhibit displays various creations
of artwork by members of the center.
“It’s our summer exhibit and the fee to
enter [artwork] in the show is only $5, and
that’s because in September we have our
juried show, which is a little bit more ex-
pensive,” said Ann Macready, executive di-
rector and special events director of the
arts center.
“Most of the pieces are for sale, and the
artists are hoping that people will come in,
especially with this beach theme people
will be thinking about their beach homes
and will find something that will suit
them,” Macready said.
There are 27 artists who contributed to
the artwork in the show, most of whom are
local to the area.
“A lot of the artists are members, but
the artwork can be submitted by anyone to
display as well,” Macready said.
A number of artists attended the Aug. 9
reception for the exhibit, which included
food and a gathering.

Evesham Township employees
receive new contracts
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
For the past 18 months, Eve-
sham Township employees have
been working without a contract.
Recently, the township success-
fully negotiated new contracts for
the workers, encompassing med-
ical, prescription care and an em-
ployee rise.
“Our contracts got officially
ratified by the union,” said Mayor
Randy Brown. “It was a long
process that will benefit both the
workers and the taxpayers.”
The employees had been work-
ing off a contract previously ex-
pired in 2010, and the township
has since been in negotiations.
“This is going forward over the
next few years, and the goal is to
not raise taxes,” Brown said.
The taxpayers will find relief
in the new contracts, which in-
clude all employees and exclude
police officers.
According to Brown, the town-
ship is projecting savings from
$300,000 to $500,00 a year depend-
ing on the usage of the prescrip-
tion plan by employees.
“We’ve been negotiating since
the end of the previous contract.
The raises we agreed to are: one
and a half percent for 2011 and
two percent for 2012 through
2014,” Acting Township Manager
Bill Cromie said.
“The employees deserve a lot of
credit, they sacrificed, we sacri-
ficed,” Brown said.
Health benefits were a big fac-
tor in negotiations as well.
“Besides the employees paying
for a share of their health care
cost per state law last year, we’ll
also have a new health benefits
plan that will save money on the
health benefits cost,” Cromie
said.
“The contract was good for all
sides. It provided the employees
with good medical coverage and
provides residents with some
much-needed tax relief,” Brown
said.
According to Cromie, the new
plan includes higher copays for
doctor’s visits, emergency room
visits and prescription costs.
“We believe it will save a signif-
icant amount of money on our
health benefit costs,” Cromie
said.
The employees will now have
to pay for more health care bene-

“The artists are fantastic peo-
ple. I’m very pleased with what
we have here and have gotten in
the past. The quality of work they
produce is just amazing. It’s
breathtaking sometimes on how
good the work is,” Macready said.
Macready is hoping the dis-
played artwork will get sold, espe-
cially with many of the pieces at
an affordable prices ranging from
$45 to $450, depending on the
piece.
“Unfortunately we haven’t sold
very much this year; the economy
is hurting everybody, especially
the artists. Of course art funding
is getting zapped year to year, and
we’re hoping somehow it comes
back and the economy bounces
back so we can support our
artists,” Macready said.
According to Macready the
members and artists are a close-
knit family. Many of which host
workshops and classes and occa-
sionally are students themselves.
The arts center offers classes to
all ages and skill levels. Recently,
the center wrapped a children’s
camp and added a fashion design
class run by Meca Mackinney, a
handbag designer and author of
“Envision: The Young Accessory
Designer’s Guide to Collection
Development.”
“She runs you through the
sketching part of it, to actually
sewing something. She started
out small with four students and
we’re hoping for a larger class
this September, and the classes is
for all ages,” Macready said.
In addition to the classes
added, the historic house is get-
ting some new renovations by re-
placing some of the rotting wood
and repainting the parts of the
house.
“A lot of people tell us that they
discover us, and they didn’t know
we were back here, a lot of people
still don’t know we’re here.”

W
hen Gov. Christie last week
signed a bill that overhauled
teacher tenure in the state,
it was a landmark moment. But it’s not
the final piece of the puzzle. Not even
close.
The measure, which was supported
by both parties, strives to make teach-
ers more accountable through evalua-
tions and reviews. If they get bad re-
views, they could be removed from the
classroom. The bill also added a year
before tenure is granted.
We’re all for rewarding the best
teachers and getting the bad ones out
of the classroom. In theory, this move
is a step toward that.
But questions remain.
What will the final version of the
teacher evaluation system look like? In
other words, can the state implement a
system that effectively identifies teach-
ers who need to be rewarded and those
who need to go? Will local districts
have to hire more managers or super-
visors? Will that lead to tax hikes?
Student achievement is another ele-
ment of the bill, and another area in
which teachers are to be measured.
Does that mean standardized test re-
sults will be used? What about those
teachers who teach grades that don’t
have standardized testing? Is it smart
to “teach to the test”? Since a child’s
educational foundation begins early, is
it fair to hold a teacher accountable for
educational shortcomings that should
have been addressed years earlier?
Also, the measure is silent on the
last in, first out system when it comes
to layoffs.
Make no mistake – significant ad-
vances were made in this bill. The
state is heading in the right direction
and should be congratulated for taking
initial steps to improve public educa-
tion.
But we shouldn’t expect changes to
happen overnight. And we shouldn’t
expect a perfect system right out of the
starting gate.
There are too many questions still to
be answered.

Tenure measure a first step

Teacher tenure revised
Last week’s measure is no doubt a step
in the right direction and a landmark
moment for education in New Jersey.
But a lot of questions still have to be
answered before anyone can pro-
nounce this move a success.
The following information is on file with
the Evesham Police Department.
On August 2, at approximately 9:45 p.m.,
the Evesham Police Department, through
an on-going investigation into the sale of
drugs, executed a search warrant on two
vehicles.
The search resulted in the seizure of
oxycodone prescription pills, money and a
vehicle.
A 27-year-old male of Marlton was ar-
rested and charged with third degree pos-
session of prescription pills, third degree
distribution of prescription pills and third
degree distribution of prescription pills in
a school zone. He was lodged in the
Burlington County Jail in lieu of $50,000
cash bail.
Additionally, a 23-year-old female of Vin-
centown was arrested and charged with
third degree conspiracy to distribute pre-
scription pills and third degree conspiracy
to distribute prescription pills in a school
zone. She was released on her own recogni-
tion.
On Aug. 7, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the
Evesham Police Department, through an
on-going investigation into the sale of pre-
scription drugs, executed a search warrant
at a home in the 1800 block of Rabbit Run
Road, located in the Whitebridge Develop-
ment.
This search warrant execution resulted
in the seizure of prescription pills and
money.
The following individuals were arrested:
a 24-year-old male was charged with third
degree distribution of prescription pills,
third degree possession of prescription
pills and a disorderly persons offense for
being under the influence of a narcotic. He
was lodged in the Burlington County Jail
in default of $25,000 bail. A 21-year-old fe-
male was charged with 3rd degree Distri-
bution of prescription pills, 3rd degree Pos-

ly persons offense for being under the in-
fluence of a narcotic. She was released on

Recent samples of West Nile
Virus and Eastern Equine En-
cephalitis have been detected and
as a result, the Burlington County
Mosquito Division treated to con-
trol adult mosquitoes in areas of
four towns on Aug. 9.
The areas treated included Eve-
sham near the intersection of
Radnor and Boswell, Maple Shade
near the intersection of Mecray
and Laurelton, Edgewater near
intersection Woodlane Crossing
and Route 130 and Washington
near mile marker 16 on Route 542.
The positive samples bring to a
total of 17 West Nile mosquito
samples and one Eastern Equine
Encephalitis mosquito sample
this season, officials said. The
first West Nile was identified in
late May in Pemberton Township.
The Mosquito Division rou-
tinely places traps throughout the
county during the warm weather
season, to identify the presence of
mosquitoes carrying West Nile
Virus, Eastern Equine Encephali-
tis, and St. Louis Encephalitis.
Residents are once again re-
minded to take precautions
against mosquito bites by using
repellent, wearing long sleeves
and long pants, and by trying to
limit outdoor activity when mos-
quitoes are most active, during
dawn and dusk.
Residents should also clean or
remove any items on their per-
sonal property that can collect
rain or sprinkler water and serve
as a breeding ground for mosqui-
toes, such as clogged gutters, flow-
erpots, bottle caps or old car tires.
They should also completely
change water in birdbaths at least
once a week and should repair
window and door screens.

Freeholders approve school merger
Burlington County Freehold-
ers recently formally approved
the merger of two county schools
under one administration – a
move to generate cost savings
through shared services – by au-
thorizing the consolidation of the
school boards into one board.
For the past year, freeholders
have been “cross-pollinating” the
Boards of Education for the
Burlington County Institute of
Technology and Special Services
School District, by appointing
current members to serve on both
boards.
The process, intended to famil-
iarize everyone with each school
district’s operation, mission, and
program, will reach its final stage
on Aug. 23, when the boards will
reorganize and consolidate into a
single “Board of Education of the
Special Services School District
and the Vocational School Dis-
trict of the County of Burling-
ton.”
“This merger was intended to
create efficiencies and cost-sav-
ings, which, at the end of the day,
translate into tax dollar savings,”
said Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio. “We have already seen
significant savings through the
sharing of assets and resources,
and it can only get better.
“The transition into a consoli-
dated administration has been a
smooth one,” Garganio added,
“and everyone involved deserves
credit for making this work.”
Dr. Donald P. Lucas, who has
served as the “shared” superin-
tendent for both schools since
June of 2011, quantified those
savings at $405,000.
Some $240,000 of that is attrib-
uted to personnel changes; the re-
maining $165,000 comes from effi-
ciencies in food services, trans-
portation, technology and securi-
ty.
“We still have areas to ex-
plore,” said Lucas, “and it should
be easier to advance that agenda
now that all our board members
are familiar with the workings of
both the vocational school and
the special services district.”
The board members include
Christopher Baxter of
Moorestown; Kathleen Burgess of
Mount Laurel; Leon Jones of
Medford; John Ferry of
Moorestown; Robert Silcox of
Mount Holly; and, Paula Lee of
Mount Laurel.
Freeholder Leah Arter, who
serves as freeholder liaison to the
schools, said that board members
are “to be commended for em-
bracing this change.
Lucas said the combined ad-
ministration has resulted in the
sharing of transportation, creat-
ing time and dollar savings by
putting school bussing under one
operation and by consolidating
routes.
Both schools now also share
the same outside vendor for food
services, and BCIT has been able
to expand its use of the Educa-
tional Services Unit at Special
Services to hire special education
teacher assistants, when applica-
ble.
The BCIT Technology Depart-
ment has been restructured and a
shared services agreement has
been approved by both Boards of
Education.

Samaritan Healthcare and Hos-
pice recently held a luncheon
honoring those who have gener-
ously donated to the organization
over the years.
The luncheon, sponsored by
TD Bank, featured acclaimed
writer Sally Friedman, whose
works have appeared in such
noted publications as the New
York Times, Ladies Home Jour-
nal, Family Circle and the
“Chicken Soup for the Soul” se-
ries, along with various national
and regional newspapers through
her popular syndicated column.
Friedman’s keynote program,
“Lifesounds: An Affectionate
Look at Ordinary Life,” was a
unique and humorous presenta-
tion on life from the celebrated
writer’s own perspective.
For 32 years, Samaritan’s not-
for-profit services have helped
people throughout the communi-
ty live each day fully and with dig-
nity. Thanks to the support of
those who attended the luncheon,
Samaritan provided more than
$1.1 million in services over and
above what is reimbursed by
Medicare, Medicaid or private in-
surance in 2011. Samaritan con-
tinues to provide care for the
uninsured and offers a variety of
unique programs to patients and
their families throughout the
area.
