The Lenape Regional High
School District board members
unanimously agreed former NBA
player Chris Herren’s multiple as-
semblies for the school and the re-
cent community speaking en-
gagement have been valuable for
the community.
According to board member
William Bisignano, students and
faculty gave their full attention to
Herren.
“You could hear a pin drop
when he spoke. He maintained
everyone’s attention,” Bisignano
said.
The board has recently taken
heat for paying Herren for his
speaking engagement with the
district, Superintendent of
Schools Carol Birnbohm said,
however the money was raised
and no money was used from the
budget.

The Sun
A former college and NBA star
came to the Lenape Regional
High School District last week,
but he did not come with stories
of fame, lavish success and the re-
alization of one’s potential. He
spoke of the risks of addiction
and how just a few decisions can
turn a dream into a nightmare.
Once a McDonald’s All-Ameri-
can and standout at Fresno State
University, Chris Herren now
spends his time touring the coun-
try warning athletes, students,
parents and whoever will listen
about how it easy it can be to lose
everything to addiction.
“I can remember coming into
auditoriums just like this and lis-
tening to someone on stage talk
about the risks of drinking and
drugs and I said ‘I’ll never be that
guy. I’m ranked ninth in the coun-
try as a high school player. I’m a

BRIEFS
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Sun
Evesham Township Superin-
tendent of Schools John Scavelli
announced the district’s Restruc-
turing Committee will present its
findings at the Dec. 19 board of
education meeting.
The committee was given the
task as part of strategic planning
process, Goals 2017. The commit-
tee met this month to make its de-
cisions, specifically on the issue
of Evans Elementary School.
There has been discussion about
closing the school.
“One of the objectives calls for
the district to form a committee
to study the issue of declining en-
rollment and examine the possi-
ble strategies to address the situa-
tion,” Scavelli told The Sun in Oc-
tober.
Declining enrollment and the
budgetary shortfall have been two
major issues for the district, with
discussion of the closure of
Evans on the table since 2011.
In line with saving the district
money, to help solve some of the
budgetary shortfall issues, the
board approved a resolution giv-
ing Business Administrator Den-
nis Nettleton permission to send
a letter for approval of selling a
district-owned property.
According to Nettleton, any
property being sold by any dis-
trict must get approval from the
county executive superintendent
at the state Department of Educa-
tion.
A recommendation is then
made to the DOE division of fi-

Herren said. “From there, I took
one line of cocaine as an 18-year-
old in my first month at BC, and it
took me 14 years to walk away
from it.”
Before he played his first game
at Boston College, Herren failed a
drug test for marijuana and co-
caine use. Later during his fresh-
man year, he failed two more drug
tests and was kicked off the team
and out of the university. He later
transferred to Fresno State Uni-
versity, and after failing another
drug test and entering a rehabili-
tation facility, he returned to the
team to have a solid collegiate ca-
reer.
A capacity crowd packed the
Performing Arts Center at Chero-
kee High School on Nov. 18 to lis-
ten to Herren present his story.
Herren’s extensive visit to the dis-
trict, which included two presen-
tations at each high school as well
as the program open to the public,
was made possible through an
outpouring of donations, as well
as a $29,000 donation from the
LRHSD Foundation. His presen-
tations were a part of the district-
wide initiative “DEFY the Issue.”
The initiative is a community
coalition involving Evesham,

ernacle and Woodland to educate
families and residents of all ages
about the dangers of illegal drug
and alcohol use as well as to pro-
vide support for young people by
empowering them to defy the
pressures of drug and alcohol
use.
“Defy the Issue, a drug- and al-
cohol-free campaign, continues to
be the focus of student-to-student
presentations both within our
schools and with the middle
schools in the eight townships
which we serve,” LRHSD superin-
tendent Carol Birnbohm said.
“And while it is impossible to at-
tribute it to one thing, we can say
with confidence that the message
is being spread effectively
throughout our community.”
The percentage of Burlington
County middle school students
using drugs and alcohol has
dropped significantly, according
to the results of a county survey.
About 2 percent of county stu-
dents in grades six, seven and
eight had consumed alcohol dur-
ing the previous 30 days, down
from 6 percent when the survey
was performed in 2011. Herren
was adamant that education re-
garding drugs must begin early.
“When I ask children in the
schools I visit to draw a picture of
what a drug addict looks like,
they draw pictures of homeless
people and prostitutes,” Herren
said. “They see addicts on their
last day, not their first. They don’t
know about day one enough. It all
starts with red (plastic) cups.”
Herren’s message was the
same to parents who believe it to
be OK that their child drinks un-
derage if it is monitored.
“That’s how it started for
everybody. Kids don’t start by tak-
ing heroin and OxyContin. It
starts by drinking beers or smok-
ing blunts in someone’s base-
ment. That’s where addiction be-
gins for everybody,” Herren said.
“Not to mention the obvious fact
that it’s illegal for children to
drink under the age of 21. How do
you draw lines for your kids if
you make breaking that law OK?”
Even though Herren speaks to
thousands of people each month,
he knows his message will go
mostly unheard and his warnings
unheeded. That is why he keeps
his goal for each presentation
much smaller.
“I thank God for all of my bad
days because it led me to speak to
hundreds of thousands of people.
I pray each time before I speak to
let me make a difference in just
one person’s life today. Just one
person,” Herren said. “When I re-
ceive an email from someone say-
ing after hearing me speak they
are seeking help, that email
means more than anything I ever
accomplished as a basketball
player.”

T
he holiday season has arrived.
And that means that many
good-hearted people and organ-
izations will be gathering food, cloth-
ing, toys, money and other items for
those less fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event as successful as possible.
But to do that, we need your help.
Many retailers count on “Black Fri-
day” to help put their business “in the
black” for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-
pend on the public’s generosity during
the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, you’ll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about
your event well in advance (at least two
weeks is best). We need to know what
types of items you are trying to collect,
who will benefit from the drive, and,
most importantly, how people can get
involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and you’ll find our news
email address throughout this paper.
Then, after we get your information,
we’ll take it from there. We’ll get it into
the paper and let everyone in town
know what it is you are trying to ac-
complish and how they can be a part of
it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need.
Let us help you to help them. Send
us your event information and let’s
make this a big donation year.

he told us we had to make sure every stu-
dent saw him, and we did,” Birnbohm said.
Birnbom recalled a reaction a student
had to Herren, noting the student couldn’t
identify her peer’s issue, which lead to bul-
lying from other students.
“It opened up many lines of communica-
tion and types of discussion, even bully-
ing,” Bisignano said.
For Birnbohm, it was important for
every student in the school to listen to what
Herren has to say about what he’s been
through. He has already spoken with
Cherokee and Lenape High School stu-
dents.
According to the LRHSD website, Her-
ren will conclude his tour of the LRHSD
with student-only presentations at
Shawnee High School on Monday, Dec. 2
and Seneca High School on Thursday, Dec.
5.
In other news:
• Lenape and Seneca will pilot an innova-
tive Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics program beginning in the
2014-2015 school year, made possible
through a $31,200 grant from Lockheed
Martin Corporation, a district release
said.
The Pathway to Engineering program,
from Project Lead the Way, will be piloted
with ninth-grade students at Lenape and
Seneca beginning in fall 2014, the release
said. The highly competitive program is de-
signed to attract and retain students inter-
ested in pursuing a STEM-related post-sec-
ondary education and, ultimately, a career,
the release said.
“This partnership opportunity provided
by Lockheed Martin will enable us to add
this
rigorous STEM program to our current
course offerings,” Heather Xenakis, Direc-
tor of Curriculum and Instruction at
LRHSD, said in the release. “It’s a
fantastic opportunity for highly motivated
students interested in engineering to un-
derstand,
in application, the content learned in sci-
ence and math courses.”
According to the release, the course is in-
terdisciplinary in its approach and in-
cludes science, technology, engineering
and math, and will be offered independent
of any specific department. The district is
hoping to continue the sequence of courses
available through the program, by adding a
new course each year for the next four
years, based on continued funding by out-
side sources.
No indication was given on when, or if,
Cherokee or Shawnee would be involved in
the program.

meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 7:30

the property decision. From
there, the board will consider the
information going forward.
Resident Cliff Gallagher ex-
pressed his concerns during the
public comment portion of the
meeting. If the sale of the proper-
ty falls through, or doesn’t hap-
pen, what’s the district’s backup
plan, he asked.
According to Scavelli, the budg-
et presentation is in January and
“several things are being consid-
ered.”
“We are looking into full-day
daycare on a fee basis and other
tuition programs for further tu-
ition revenues,” Scavelli said.
Nettleton will report progress
of the building in question, he
said.
In other news:
• The district recently launched
its Facebook page.
The page is the first of its kind
in the area and of the sending
schools for the Lenape Regional
High School District, Scavelli
said.
Currently, the board is waiting
for permission to add updates
about student achievement.
The page will include commu-
nication about the district, an-
nouncements and the aforemen-
tioned student achievement.
The page is live and can be ac-
cessed through the e-newsletter
recently sent by Director of Cur-
riculum and Instruction Danielle
Magulick and on the district’s
website.
• Scavelli wanted to remind res-
idents, parents and students there
is a community survey available
online that should be taken for
the strategic planning, Goals
2017. The last day to answer the
survey is Nov. 30.
“We would appreciate your
feedback. We need the informa-
tion and the more the better,”
Scavelli said.
• The board gave recognition to
the cross country team for the re-
cent Cross Country Meet of
Champions, in addition to the
Marlton Middle girls field hockey
team for the team's recent suc-
cess.
• The next board meeting is
scheduled for Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at
DeMasi Middle School, 199 Eves-
boro-Medford Road, instead of
the municipal building, to accom-
modate the crowd for the Restruc-
turing Committee’s findings,
Scavelli said.
