ALUMNI WEEKEND GREAT SUCCESS

H

owe’s annual Alumni Weekend, held this year May 3rd through May 5th, saw a large number of alumni return to campus. Many classes were well represented despite the passing of time. Thirteen graduates from the Class of 1948 were on campus as were ten members of the Class of 1953. The Class of 1963 also was well represented at its 50-year reunion with 21 former cadets making the trek back to Howe. Highlights of the weekend included the Pagin Golf Tournament, the faculty-alumni softball game, three parades, evensong in St. James Chapel and the annual alumni memorial service in All Saints chapel on Sunday morning. All of these events brought back torrents of memories for all those who returned for the festivities. The annual Alumni Luncheon and the Alumni Banquet were held in the Major Merritt mess hall. Many of those returning complimented the quality of the food. Gordon McMullen, A63, told us he did not remember the food as being as good when his class was at Howe. Many returning alumni attended the Alumni Luncheon on Saturday. Wally Jarvis, A70, Alumni Association 1st Vice President, opened the meeting by reporting that this past year had seen an improvement both in enrollment and in academics. He complimented the staff and faculty for their diligence in making these improvements. Board of Trustees Chairman Ray Stuckey, A67, told the alumni that they had a vital role to

play in the school’s future. He noted that the school depends on both enrollment and the generosity of the alumni for its well-being. Neither factor alone can ensure success. He told at the meeting that the board, the staff and the faculty have made substantial fiscal improvements. However, more must be done to ensure financial health. He looks to increase enrollment to 150 cadets by the end of next year, and believes Major Tam Haas, A60, and his staff will be able to accomplish this goal.

Chairman Stuckey added that in addition to enrollment, alumni and friends of The Howe School must continue to donate generously. He intends to continue the Capital Campaign to raise $2.5 million for capital improvements; $2.5 million for the Annual Fund, which includes operations and scholarships; and $5 million to re-build Howe’s endowment. Alumni have already donated over $700,000 to this effort, and Chairman Stuckey encouraged alumni and friends to continue to contribute. Alumni who would like to contribute to the fund may contact Mrs. Jean Miller at (260) 562-2131. Chairman Stuckey and Colonel George Douglass, A60, Howe’s Superintendent, both told the alumni that the only constant at Howe is change and their support is essential to enable the school to meet their goals effectively. COL Douglass noted that the cadets need the alumni in order to achieve their goals. “They are looking to you”, he said, “please don’t let them down.” We hope all alumni will do their part to meet this challenge for ourselves, for our school, and for those who follow in our footsteps.
