BORN OF OPPORTUNITY
Businesses and workers all benefit from booming gas and oil production
By Luke Laggis

Clearly, it has worked. Romines and his family set a goal to grow the business by 50 percent in 2014, and he says he’s confident Acme can accomplish that. BAKKEN JOBS MARKET It’s no secret that the Bakken region has been booming. A recent Associated Press story chronicled North Dakota’s new efforts to bring in workers to fill 25,000 job vacancies. The state’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the nation, at less than 3 percent. The population – over 725,000 – is at an all-time high and is growing faster than any other state, and it’s all been driven by oil. The state is now the second largest oil producer in the United States, with only Texas ahead of it. While many states are struggling to put more of their residents to work, North Dakota is courting would-be residents to fill a surplus of jobs across a wide spectrum of industries. The state recently launched a new campaign to attract workers to the high plains: “Find the Good Life in North Dakota.” The state is footing half the bill for the $800,000 campaign, with the other half being donated by the New York-based oil company Hess Corp. In a statement announcing the campaign, state officials said it is focused on career opportunities in North Dakota and promoting the state as “a great place to live, work and raise a family.” It will target workers across all the state’s industries. While North Dakota’s advertising campaign and the success of Acme Oilfield Services may not seem fully intertwined, they both point to one indisputable fact: There is opportunity in the oilfield services industry. Those who put quality and safety above all else will find success. Enjoy this month’s issue. GOMC

company evolved into another family’s growing company. Michael Romines and his parents, John and Ellen Musselman, own two other oil industry companies. When Acme, one of their service vendors, abruptly decided Luke Laggis to close its doors, they saw an opportunity and stepped in. They needed those services, and so did other operators in the region. At the time, the pumping unit maintenance and repair business had only four employees. Since then, Acme has added oilfield construction, sandblasting and fabrication to its menu of services, and has grown to 40 employees across four divisions. In addition to his for te bsi we r ou e parents’ involvement, Se options layouts and more Romines also brought his brother on board to handle sales, adding yet another family element to the business. And because the brothers grew up in a SPECIALIZED TRAILERS EYE WASH UNITS family business, they treat SKID UNITS DECONTAMINATION UNITS their employees like family, EMERGENCY SHOWER providing little extras, like paid time off for emergencies, that keep their people happy and dedicated to the company’s success. COMBINATION TRAILER LAYOUT OPTIONS he gas and oilfield services industry spans the gamut, from small mom-and-pop operations to major corporations. All play a vital role in supporting the extraction of gas and oil. Acme Oilfield Services, profiled in this month’s issue of GOMC, is a company that falls somewhere in the middle of these parameters. One of the interesting things about Acme is how a very small family

Sometimes you don’t have to go far to find good opportunities. The owners of Acme Oil Service & Repair learned that lesson, and they’ve built a successful business around it.

Michael Romines and his parents, John and Ellen Musselman, own Southwest Operating and Atlantis Oil Company. When Acme – a service vendor providing maintenance and repair on their pumping units – abruptly decided to close its doors, they saw an opportunity and stepped in. They needed those services, and so did other operators in Northeast Texas. What they didn’t know was that one business would lead to another and another, like a remodeling project that continually uncovers something else that needs to be fixed. What started out as reviving a pumping unit maintenance and repair business with four employees in 2006 has bloomed into a company with 40 employees and four divisions. Having grown tenfold, the next challenge is to effectively get the message out about all the services Acme Oil Service & Repair offers. REBUILDING A BUSINESS When the well-known owner of Acme Oil Service & Repair died unexpectedly in 2005, Romines and John Musselman discussed the value in owning a pumping unit maintenance/repair business. They didn’t think much more about it until 10 months later on a Wednesday in August 2006 when they called Acme to have some work done. They were referred to a competitor; Acme was closing its doors that Friday. Without much thought, Romines and Musselman set up a meeting with the widowed owner and presented her with a proposal, which she accepted on Friday, Aug. 24. By Monday, Romines was managing the business. “We figured that they had been in business for 56 years, and we had a large need for the service and knew others did too,” Romines says. Though it was an established business, he soon realized he needed to treat Acme like a startup. That meant personal investment and long hours. There were no computers at the business; everything was handwritten. Romines spent long days and Saturdays setting up accounts, payroll, and organizing files on a computer utilizing programs such as QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel. It wasn’t long before he asked his wife, Jenny, to help handle all the paperwork. The couple had three children, ages 4, 10 and 11, so it was a very hectic time. As the back office was getting organized, jobs in the field started to diversify. When Acme delivered a pumping unit, they referred another company to build the pad before it could be set. “It didn’t take me but about two months and I thought, ‘I don’t know why we’re paying someone else to do this,’” Romines says. When the foreman of a roustabout crew he regularly worked with said he would like to work for Acme, Romines recognized an opportunity. He hired the foreman and his son and added oilfield construction to Acme’s resume of services.

“All it took was a truck and a backhoe, and when a customer called we could say, ‘We can build a pad,’” Romines says. “We didn’t set out with the goal to grow services. It just kind of happened naturally.” Customers appreciated that they only had to make one call to complete the job. (continued)

Acme Oil Service & Repair welders Humberto Aguirre, left, and William Sepulveda fabricate parts used to repair oilfield equipment.

TANK REVIVAL
Sandblasting is one niche of the Acme company’s services that is growing in demand, says co-owner Michael Romines. “We have so much work we can’t keep up with it. Sandblasting is just a better economic option,” he explains. Most of Acme’s clients are small independent oil companies with tight budgets. If a tank gets a leak, they can’t afford — or don’t want to spend money on — a new tank. The Acme crew saves them the expense by sandblasting and welding the leak. Often clients take the extra precaution of having the entire floor and 3 feet up the wall sandblasted to check for more imperfections. After fixing any problems with a rig welder, workers coat the tank with a high strength epoxy to lengthen its lifespan. “We can complete three services in one call, which is an economical option,” Romines says. “Or, we can bring in a crane and remove the tank.” Because they also have large oil company clients, Acme has access to newer tanks that are replaced due to minor flaws that don’t meet some companies’ stringent policies. Or sometimes they purchase tanks and other items when hired to remove equipment from abandoned wells. Workers refurbish the tanks and make them available for sale to Acme’s customers.

JUST ONE MORE THING As Acme was getting reestablished in 2007, Romines asked his brother, Robert, a former Army medic just out of college, to join the business to make sales calls. By then Acme had three crews, one each for preventive maintenance, pumping unit repair and oilfield construction (roustabout). Robert spent a couple months on each crew learning as much as he could; then he started knocking on customers’ doors. There was enough work by 2008 to hire a bookkeeper. The business was slowly and steadily growing in jobs and services Romines hadn’t anticipated. “Early on, and even still, we have grown Acme organically. We let our customers drive the services we offer, based on their requests,” he says. In 2009, Acme purchased S&D Sandblasting when the owner was ready to retire. Shortly after that, Acme purchased USA Fabrication, which was about to go out of business. Romines said it was too good a deal to pass up after negotiating a price that covered the cost of the equipment. With those additions, Acme had a complete complement of services and a great sales pitch. Crews maintain and repair pumping units. Workers can build pads, hook up equipment, cut grass — do whatever is needed for oilfield construction. They can bring sandblasting and welding equipment on site for holes and minor repairs on equipment. They can also go to the field, disassemble units, and transport them to their fabrication shop for overhaul and major repair. And finally, the company’s most recent business addition: equipment sales with a focus on new or used pumping units and refurbished tanks.

16

“What sets our business apart is the wide variety of services we offer that are intertwined in some way. Very few of our customers only need one of the services,” Romines says. “If you call us for multiple services it saves you time from calling others, plus we can manage your project so we don’t skip details. It’s a matter of efficiency, which is tied to profitability.” DEVELOPING A TEAM Along with the businesses, Acme picked up a few good men along the way who now hold leadership positions with the company. Terry Quinalty, the roustabout foreman who asked for work, is the oilfield construction manager. His crews take care of everything from dirt work and site building to oil spill cleanup and remediation. Clint Wyatt worked for Acme when the business was sold and is now pumping unit repair and fabrication manager. His crews provide a 26-point maintenance service to help clients avoid downtime. When problems do occur, the crews are trained to handle them, regardless of the

“Early on, and even still, we have grown Acme organically. We let our customers drive the services we offer, based on their requests.”
Michael Romines scope and complexity. As part of that, Wyatt also coordinates custom fabrication in the field and at the shop. To tie all the pieces together, Todd Carr was hired as general sales manager in 2009, and a bookkeeper and administrative assistant were brought on to keep the office organized. Romines oversees the office, and his brother, Robert, oversees operations. Their parents also stay involved.

Acme Oil Service & Repair workers prep a newly rebuilt site for painting.

“One thing I’m most proud of is that we have a lot of tenured employees,” Romines says. Fifteen have been with the company for about six years. Of the 40 on the payroll, about 30 have been with Acme more than a year. The company offers competitive pay rates and a group health insurance plan, but prides itself in its nontraditional benefits. For example, the owners offer low interest loans in times of crisis. Recently when an employee lost his home in a fire, he was given an extra week of paid vacation.

“My brother and I grew up in a family business, so we treat our employees like family.”
Michael Romines “My brother and I grew up in a family business, so we treat our employees like family,” Romines says. Acme emphasizes safety with weekly employee meetings for “top-of-mind awareness” as well as specific training for things such as confined-space entry and H2S. HEAVY-DUTY FLEET Acme has five four-man crews fully equipped for a variety of jobs in the field. Oilfield construction crews work from 1-ton Dodge crew cab pickups outfitted with a welder, air compressor, necessary hand tools and a New Holland backhoe, D95 New Holland bulldozer or a Western Star dump truck. From simple weed-eating and cleaning to extensive production equipment connectivity, Acme’s crews are outfitted for the work. Romines says the 40-ton crane is the breadwinner for major pumping unit repairs. With a 100-foot telescoping boom, the National Crane (Manitowoc) can manage any repair, whether they’re made in the field or require loading the pumping units for delivery to the fabrication shop. Acme also has a 1994 GMC Telelect 600 Boom Truck with a 70-foot boom and 15-ton capacity for smaller jobs, which provides customers a more economical option. Another important piece of equipment is the sandblast trailer with a 500-pound blasting pot, Ingersoll Rand 185 compressor and 56:1 Graco Airless Spray rig. The unit is perfect for field repairs on tanks, heater treaters, free water knockouts and any other production equipment, and it helps the blast and coat/paint crew save customers valuable downtime. BRANDING FOR THE FUTURE As all the pieces of the business started to fit together, Romines realized he was spending too much time running between the businesses, which were located all over Tyler, Texas (population 99,000). “We are known for pumping unit maintenance and repair. We need to get our story out that we are a provider of all these services.”
Michael Romines January 2013, Acme purchased a 5-acre campus in Tyler that included office space and an 18,000-square-foot fabrication facility with overhead bridge cranes. They also opened a second smaller shop in Quitman, Texas, about an hour away. “It made a huge difference in efficiency and a better bottom line,” Romines says. Based on that and the company’s growth in less than eight years, he and his family set a goal to grow the business by 50 percent in 2014. Romines says he feels confident Acme can accomplish that by focusing on marketing, and he hired consultants to create an effective plan. “We are known for pumping unit maintenance and repair,” Romines explains. “We need to get our story out that we are a provider of all these services.” For now, ownership is focused on growing their business in northeast Texas, though some work takes crews as far as North Dakota and West Virginia. With the diverse services they offer, there is plenty of room for growth without having to expand geographically. Plus, there are still other service offerings to explore. Though there aren’t any set plans, Romines hinted that it might make sense to own an oilfield supply company since crews always need connections, valves and other parts for repair work. It’s just a thought, Romines emphasizes, but then again, it was just a thought that led to buying Acme Oil Service & Repair in 2006. GOMC

On the Money

THE SALARY PITFALL
Before putting front-line workers on salary, make sure you’re following the law
By Erik Gunn

I
Erik Gunn

t’s not an uncommon belief: If you put your employees on salary, you won’t have to pay overtime. Like a lot of seemingly simple solutions, it’s wrong. That doesn’t keep it from being widespread, however. “Many employers, even sophisticated employers, make the mistake that simply paying people on a salaried basis exempts them from overtime,” says Wisconsin labor and employment lawyer Sean Scullen. There may be good reasons for switching someone from an hourly wage to an annual salary, but there are also serious pitfalls that could put your business at risk. So if you want to make the change just to save money, think again – and read on. EXEMPT, OR NOT? The real difference in how employees are categorized isn’t between “hourly” and “salaried,” says Scullen, the National Chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group of the law firm of Quarles & Brady, headquartered in Milwaukee with offices in Florida, Arizona and Washington, D.C. “Anyone can be paid on a salaried basis,” Scullen says. “The real question is whether employees are exempt from overtime requirements under federal or state law.” The federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires employees to be paid one-anda-half times their “regular rate” (generally determined by dividing all compensation earned by an employee in a work week by the total number of hours worked) for every additional hour they work in one week over 40 hours – in other words, time and a half. To be exempt from that requirement, an employee must be paid on a salary of

not less than $455 per week. But that alone doesn’t pass the test, Scullen points out. The FLSA also requires that an exempt employee’s duties fall within one of a limited group of exemptions. The most common

And don’t think that because your business is very small it isn’t governed by federal labor laws. Where the FLSA is concerned, very few businesses are immune, Scullen says. It can get even worse. “There are robust timekeeping regulations around hourly paid employees,” Elliott notes. Even if just one or two employees complain, that could trigger a full-blown audit of your entire operation by the labor department. If your timekeeping records aren’t in order to show you’ve paid hourly employees appropriately, including overtime when it has been worked, you could face additional penalties. That also doesn’t take into account the cost of compiling the data you need to respond to an audit request. “And if the organization hasn’t kept timekeeping

are the so-called “white collar” exemptions involving “executive,” “administrative” or “professional” duties. “They’ll save money in the short term, but all it takes is an employee or two to complain to the Department of Labor,” says Bruce Elliott, manager of compensation and benefits at the Society for Human Resources Management in Arlington, Va. COSTLY MISTAKE Suppose you classify a particular employee as salaried, and a federal administrative law judge rules your decision was wrong. Further, let’s say the judge finds that your wrongly classified employee should have been paid for 100 hours of overtime work in the last year. You could owe the worker the equivalent of 150 times his or her regular rate. But it doesn’t stop there. You may be required to pay the employee’s attorney fees (as well as your own legal fees, of course). And the federal law also provides for an additional damage award of up to 100 percent of the unpaid wages – in this instance, another 150 times the employee’s regular rate.

records, the burden of proof is on the employer to prove that the employees didn’t work overtime when they claim they have.” EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULES It is possible to put workers on a salary, but still keep the records so that they earn and are paid overtime when their workweek exceeds 40 hours. Elliott sees little point in that sort of arrangement, however, especially considering that even for those employees, you’ll need to keep accurate time records so that they’re paid overtime when they qualify for it. “It’s easier to categorize them as hourly-paid so you can reconcile hours worked to compensation,” Elliott says. But it bears repeating: To be truly exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay, a salaried worker must have duties that fall within one of the legal exemptions. Those include responsibilities for managing workers, performing administrative work as the exemption defines it, or performing professional duties: work that requires specialized knowledge typically acquired in a prolonged course of study, such as accounting or engineering.

BONUSES AND COMMISSIONS Hourly or not, Elliott says bonuses and commissions can be a useful tool for motivating front-line workers, especially those whose jobs offer opportunities to sell an additional service or product to the customer. Straight sales commissions can be easier to figure in this way, he points out. Annual profit-sharing or other forms of bonuses are another alternative. One caution, however, Scullen warns: Employers who fail to take nondiscretionary bonuses or commissions into account when calculating overtime do so at their peril. While outside salespeople may be exempt from overtime requirements, other nonexempt employees who are paid commissions or nondiscretionary bonuses must have such payments included in their overtime calculation. That typically requires a difficult retroactive calculation, he says. One way to avoid that recalculation on a yearend bonus, is to pay the bonus as a percentage of the employee’s total annual compensation (including overtime). Elliott says the FLSA requires that when nondiscretionary bonuses for hourly workers are calculated in terms of annual gross pay, overtime hours must be included, not just the straight time wages over the year. PREVENTING DISASTER So how do you avoid problems from overtime violations, or any other violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act? Scullen recommends a proactive strategy for employers: Conduct your own audit of wage-and-hour compliance to identify and correct potential concerns before a lawsuit is filed or the Department of Labor knocks on your door. A knowledgeable labor and employment lawyer can help you review your compensation plans and employee classifications and guide you in their proper implementation. At the same time, working with legal counsel can help ensure that your internal audit is protected from easy discovery by a plaintiff’s attorney – because it will then be covered under the attorney-client or attorney work-product privileges, Scullen explains. The U.S. Department of Labor has numerous fact sheets and guidelines in the FLSA requirements, including a series of online tests you can run through to get a quick assessment of whether a worker’s circumstances or assignment qualifies that person as exempt under the federal law. You can find fact sheets at www.dol.gov/whd/fact-sheets-index.htm and one of those online tests at www.dol.gov/elaws/ esa/flsa/scope/screen9.asp, along with links to other specialized tests. And most of all, do your homework before trying to save money through a specious strategy.

“While you may save money on the short term,” Elliott says, “if it catches up to you, you’re going to pay through the nose on the back end.” And that’s the kind of nosebleed you’ll never want. GOMC

INDUSTRY FOCUSED ON CALGARY
Global Petroleum Show will bring in 2,000 exhibitors and 60,000 attendees

interested in seeing the newest technology available. “Mainly, GPS is the meeting place for the global oil and gas industry where you can network, share knowledge and collaborate with others in the industry,” Arnold says. GPS takes up over 700,000 net square feet at Stampede Park and is one of the largest oil and gas events in the world. Its uniqueness lies in the outdoor exhibition area, where true field equipment is shown. “Attendees have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the drilling rigs and other heavy equipment that makes the industry tick,” Arnold says. Arnold noted that countries such as Mexico, Peru, China and others come to Calgary to get an understanding of how Alberta’s oil and gas industry works. An independent survey showed GPS brings $65 million worth of business to Calgary over three days, and $8.9 billion in transactions take place across the industry as a result of the show. Arnold says she has seen some changes in the show in recent years with oil booms in the U.S. and other countries. “Shale gas and pipelines are a big topic in the last couple of years,” Arnold says. “We have seen a rise of interest also in water management, and environmental sustainability. There are also countries such as Mexico and Peru who are opening up investment opportunities on a global scale.” Registration for GPS is free online for oil and gas engineers, purchasers, operators, technical professionals in the industry, and if you have been invited by an exhibitor as a customer. A registration fee will apply on June 1 through the end of the show on June 12. For more information, go to www. globalpetroleumshow.com. GOMC

ore than 60,000 attendees are expected to converge on Calgary, Alberta, in early June as the Global Petroleum Show begins its run as an annual event. “GPS showcases 2,000 exhibiting companies who represent technology, products and services for the oil and gas industry,” says Paula Arnold, vice president of marketing for the show. “There

are currently over 200 separate product categories ranging from abandonment services to workover. The exhibitors represent service companies and suppliers who provide expertise to the oil and gas operating companies.” Global Petroleum Show began in 1968 as a small exhibition in the Big Four parking lot of Stampede Park in Calgary and featured the latest technology in natural gas flaring. The show, originally called Flare Square, has since grown to host over 2,000 exhibiting companies and 60,000 attendees from 100 countries. This year the show will be held June 10-12 at Stampede Park. “As Calgary is the heart of the energy industry in Canada, and many of the service companies with the latest technology reside here, Calgary is the perfect place to host Global Petroleum Show,” Arnold says. Prior to this year, GPS was held every other year, but after this year the show becomes an annual event due to the rising demand of companies wishing to connect on a more regular basis. Global Petroleum Show attendees represent buyers, purchasers, technical engineers and oil and gas professionals who are

SAFE TRANSPORT
Agencies adopting a wide range of new crude-by-rail shipping standards
By Cory Dellenbach

T

he U.S. Department of Transportation and the Association of American Railroads (AAR) are teaming up to adopt a wide range of new shipping standards for those companies transporting crude by rail. The new rules are set to go into effect by July. The first of those regulations, which has been in place since late February, requires all shippers to test crude from the Bakken area. The order ensures the proper classification of crude oil before it is transported by rail, according to DOT officials. “We are raising the bar for shipping crude oil on behalf of the families and communities along rail lines nationwide,” says DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx. “If you intend to move crude oil by rail, then you must test and classify the material appropriately.” The order was issued in response to several derailments involving trains carrying crude oil from the Bakken region during the winter months. “When you do ship it, you must follow the requirements for the two strongest safety packing groups. From emergency orders to voluntary agreements, we are using every tool at our disposal to ensure the safe transportation of crude.” Shippers are required to use nine hazard classes as a guide to properly classify their hazardous materials. THE PLAN Also, as part of an agreement between the DOT and the AAR, any train carrying more than 20 cars of crude oil that include at least one older model DOT-111 tank car will reduce its speed from 50 to 40 miles per hour through urban areas. “The rapid increase in the production and transportation of crude oil requires additional vigilance,” says Foxx in a letter to AAR. Trains hauling oil are now required to slow down in the 46 federally designated cities of highest threat — Denver, Colo., and Minnesota’s Twin Cities are the closest to the Bakken. Other safety measures that will go into effect include more track inspections, enhanced braking systems, better emergency response plans and an analysis to determine what the safety route for trains carrying more than 20 tanks would be. As of March 25, railroads are now required to conduct at least one additional inspection annually on mainline routes for trains moving 20 or more cars of crude oil beyond those inspections required by new Federal Railroad Administration regulations. Railroads will also conduct at least two high-tech track geometry inspections each year on those same lines, according to the DOT.

The improved braking system had to be in place no later than April 1, which gives trains the technology to stop faster by applying emergency brakes from both ends of the train. Railroads have until July 1 to make sure wheel bearing detectors are in place every 40 miles along tracks. Companies will also need to determine the safest and most secure rail routes for the 20-plus tank car trains by using the Rail Corridor Risk Management System by July 1. The RCRMS is a tool used for routing security sensitive materials. It considers commodity volume, trip length, population densities, local emergency response capability and track “We are raising the bar for quality to assess safety. shipping crude oil on behalf of The final piece of the safety puzzle to be in the families and communities place by July 1 is making along rail lines nationwide. sure railroads develop an inventory of emergency If you intend to move crude response resources along oil by rail, then you must routes used to haul 20 or more cars. test and classify the “Today, our railways material appropriately.” move more hazardous materials than ever before,” Anthony Foxx says Cynthia Quaterman of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. “DOT will continue to enforce safety regulations to protect our communities and the environment.” CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS AND TIGHTER REGULATIONS Railroad companies and PHMSA are working together to address tank car standards and proper labeling of oil transported by rail, and the PHMSA has cracked down on the misclassification of car contents. According to Quaterman, three North Dakota companies were fined in February for alleged violations after investigators found 11 of 17 oil samples were misclassified. Some railroad companies are already starting to make the transportation of crude oil safer. On Feb. 20, the BNSF Railway announced plans to buy a fleet of 5,000 new crude oil tank cars designed to exceed the latest industry standards. The cars would come with thicker walls and ends fitted with better

Case Studies

Compressors and Power Generation, Mobile Services
By Craig Mandli MOBILE PLANTS PROVIDE POWER FOR IRAQI OIL AND GAS COMPANY Problem

With its power plant to remain inoperative for another year, an oil and gas project in Iraq was facing a serious headwind to its production capabilities, which, down the line, would possibly affect the country’s electricity generation. Other repercussions were the possibility of sales and opportunity losses, employment insecurity for its workers and an administrative conflict with the Iraqi government.

Altaaqa Global Cat Rental Power provided a 50-megawatt Taqafficient power plant package including transformers, gas fuel treatment plant, and a dynamic gas blending technology that optimizes power output while being eco-friendly. Renting a temporary power generation facility offered an immediate and flexible fix, as well as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective operation. Using a combination of 70 percent gas and 30 percent diesel, the package was able to economically provide the necessary energy requirements of the project, while complying with the world’s sustainable energy regulatory standards.

Solution

The oil and gas facility opened as planned. Financial and opportunity losses were averted and all the facility’s operatives were maintained. www. altaaqaglobal.com.

GENERATOR SET INCREASES POWER AT COAL MINING SITE Problem

Teck Coal, operator of some of the largest coal mines in North America, was using outdated and underpowered motivators that required frequent maintenance and caused costly downtime. “It ran at 1,400 kW, and whenever we tried to move it, the breaker would trip, sometimes as many as four or five times during a move,” says Mehul Joshi, electrical engineer for Teck Coal. Dirt and grime from the engine covered the electronic control equipment, which caused additional maintenance and required frequent equipment replacements.

An MTU Onsite Energy generator set, including an MTU 20V 4000 G83L engine, meeting EPA Tier 2 emission standards, replaced the old motivator. The power output is rated at 7,200 volts and 2,575 kW at an elevation of 1,300 meters.

Solution

The new motivator gave the newest shovels ample power without stalling out at high elevations. Additionally, all the electrical components in the new motivator are housed in a separate, dust-tight enclosure. The improved interior design increased user safety and comfort, while reducing the frequency of electrical maintenance. 800/325-5450; www.mtuonsiteenergy.com.

CENTRIFUGES EXTEND ENGINE LIFE, OPERATING HOURS Problem

A major surface mining operation in Kentucky and West Virginia was looking for ways to extend the service life of their heavy-duty diesel engines. That effort eventually focused on oil cleanliness and an evaluation of leading bypass filtration technologies.

After analyzing filtration effectiveness, capacity, ease of service and costs, the company selected the Spinner II centrifuge from T.F. Hudgins. Centrifuges are self-contained oil-cleaning units for bypass and offline filtration of engine lubricants and industrial fluids. They extract both large contaminants and particles as small as one-tenth of a micron, controlling soot and reducing wear. Following a successful test period, the customer installed Spinner II centrifuges fleet-wide and switched to a synthetic oil.

Solution

The company has seen improvements in oil cleanliness and engine protection. Drain intervals for off-road equipment increased to 1,000 and 1,500 hours. Their Caterpillar 988 and 992G series wheel loaders have gone from 250-hour service intervals to 1,000 hours. The company was able to eliminate three oil changes per year. Their Caterpillar 773 and 777D truck engines are running trouble-free for 43,000 hours, about 70 percent more than the average service life of those engines. They also report doubling the engine life of their Cummins gen set engines and Caterpillar D11 dozers. 713/682-3651; www.tfhudgins.com.

Tech Perspective

A PRESSURE-FREE

DECISION
By Daniel Leiss
FINDING THE RIGHT PRESSURE WASHER FOR THE JOB ISN’T AS
easy as it sounds. If you choose an underpowered product, the results will be disappointing. Going with an oversized unit adds inconvenience and extra cost. Not to mention you risk damaging property. So how does a person determine what type of pressure washer he needs? Education is the only answer. It takes an understanding of the machine, the application and the cleaning process itself to make a proper selection. HOT OR COLD? As with any learning process, it’s best to start with the basics. In the case of pressure washers, that means figuring out whether you need a hot- or coldwater unit. Cold pressure washers are the most popular option. They’re compact and economical, and they’ll do the trick for a large number of cleaning jobs. Generally, cold-water units are best at washing away dirt and mud. That alone covers a lot of applications, like washing work trucks. Where cold water falls short, however, is removing grease or grime (dirt that is ingrained or clinging to a surface). A cold pressure washer may push these substances around, but it won’t produce a clean surface. For instance, if the machine is used to clean the fifth wheel on a tractor-trailer, it will likely splatter and smear the heavy grease, rather than wash it off. When dealing with grease, grime and oil, a hot pressure washer is usually a better choice. That’s because hot water actually cuts through grease, loosening it from the surface. Once the bond between the grease and the surface has been broken, it can then be washed away. Also, remember that the performance of either a hot or cold pressure washer can be enhanced by using cleaning chemicals. There are a variety of detergents available for use with pressure washers, and using the right one can help the process go much more smoothly. POWER PREFERENCE Both hot and cold pressure washers are available with electric motors or gas-powered engines. This decision is largely based on where the machine will be used. If it will be operated outdoors without adequate electrical sources nearby, then a gas-powered unit is the best bet. Otherwise, many people prefer electric motors for their cost efficiency, low maintenance and quiet operation. Keep in mind that many of the higher-powered electric pressure washers require a 230-volt, three-phase power source, which isn’t readily available in many locations.
42 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - MAY 2014

Weighing a few important factors will help you choose the right pressure washer

If selecting a hot pressure washer, a person must also choose one of three options for heating the water: oil-fired, gas-fired or electric. The most popular choice is oil-fired, which can use diesel, fuel oil or kerosene to heat the water. These units are highly portable, and the fuels are affordable and readily available. The next option is gas-fired, which means the machine can burn either natural gas or LP gas. However, this option is typically reserved for stationary pressure washers that are hard-plumbed into the gas system of the building where they are located.

Education is the only answer. It takes an understanding of the machine, the application and the cleaning process itself to make a proper selection.
The third option is to use electricity to heat the water. Although convenient and highly portable, these units use high voltage and draw high current. Therefore, these products are only recommended if the operator has easy access to such electrical sources. SPEC CHECK After deciding on the type of pressure washer, a person must determine what specifications will best meet his needs. Pressure, volume and horsepower ratings are often misunderstood, but they play a large role in the performance of a pressure washer. Start by considering pressure. Simply put, its purpose is to help break the bond between the contaminant and the surface being cleaned. If the pressure is too low, the bond won’t break without extra help from hot water or detergents. If the pressure is higher than what’s needed, the dirt will blow around more, and the high-pressure spray may even damage the surface. With this in mind, it’s best to find a happy medium — a pressure washer that has adequate ratings for the manner in which it will be used. For instance, if the user will mostly be washing vehicles, a 1,500 psi unit may work fine. If washing construction or mining equipment, consider using at least 2,000 psi. For even tougher industrial jobs, 3,000 psi or more is often required. Many people assume that pressure is the only important rating of a pressure washer, but that’s not true. Volume, which is stated in gallons per minute (gpm), equally affects cleaning performance. After the pressure has broken the bond between the contaminant and the surface, the contaminant must be

washed away. And the greater the flow of water, the better the substance rinses off. In fact, professionals rely on high-volume units to complete their cleaning jobs quickly. Although one might assume that a high-volume pressure washer would only consume large amounts of water, this is not necessarily the case. The average garden hose dispenses between 6 and 8 gpm, while the average pressure washer only puts out 3 to 4 gpm. Therefore, even the highest-rated pressure washers usually offer some type of water savings. The third factor, horsepower, is useful because it determines how much pressure and volume a pressure washer can produce. For example, a 3,000 psi, 4 gpm unit requires at least an 11 hp gas engine to achieve those outputs. Anything less than 11 horsepower will deliver less pressure and volume than the pump’s actual rating. Basic formulas can be used to calculate the minimum horsepower requirements of a machine. Note how electric-powered units use a different equation than gas-powered: - Electric motor horsepower requirement: (PSI x GPM)/1460 - Gas engine horsepower requirement: (PSI x GPM)/1100 Another way to look at the pressure and flow ratings is through cleaning units. This factors in both psi and gpm to help compare the cleaning power of pressure washers. To come up with this number, simply multiply the pressure and volume specifications. For instance, a 3,500 psi, 3.8 gpm machine would have 13,300 cleaning units, while a 3,000 psi, 4.5 gpm unit would have 13,500 cleaning units. In this scenario, the second unit would offer higher performance. DURABLE DESIGNS Of course, reliability also plays an important role in the pressure washer selection process. Before deciding on one, carefully inspect the unit and pay attention to the details. For starters, is the frame constructed of thick steel? Considering the amount of abuse many pressure washers receive, this can make a huge difference in the longevity of a machine. Also, check the quality of the engine or electric motor. Is it made by a reputable manufacturer? Does it have adequate horsepower to drive the pump? If the answer to these questions is yes, then the operator is more likely to be satisfied with the results. Next, make sure the pump can handle the workload. Ceramic plunger pumps are regarded as the highest quality in the industry, and the best ones are designed to run for 2,000 hours or more, as long as they’re well maintained. Compare this to pressure washers intended for occasional homeowner use, which may have a service life of only 100 to 200 hours. One of the most important components is the unloader valve, which experiences more wear and tear than any other part of the pump. The unloader valve activates every time the spray wand’s trigger is released, allowing water to cycle through the pump, so if it’s not functioning properly, it can lead to significant damage. Therefore, a person should ensure that this component is high quality and easy to replace before selecting a unit. The guidelines for picking a pressure washer aren’t complicated, but they’re important. That’s because your money may be wasted if you spend it on an inadequate unit that does a poor job. Even worse, the cleaning project could end up costing way more than anticipated if you damage a surface with an oversized pressure washer. In the end, learning these guidelines will be well worth the time. And getting the job done right will be well worth the investment. GOMC

RUGGED AND ROOMY
Industrial-duty restroom trailer built to provide comfort in remote and extreme locations

y the company’s own admission, the Comfort Station industrial-duty restroom trailer from McKee Technologies - Explorer Trailers doesn’t offer many frills. However, what it does offer is rugged, heavy-duty construction, and a roomy restroom compartment that is easy to clean and maintain. The trailer has been available for several years, but this year was its first time at the Pumper and Cleaner Environmental Expo International. The unit’s heavy-duty carbon steel construction and comfortable private facilities designed for industrial use in remote and extreme locations answers a big market need, according to Derek Potma from McKee Technologies. “The Comfort Station is available in many different configurations and sizes, and has an all-steel exterior designed for rough elements,” Potma says. “The roof is actually a onepiece steel shell, and is entirely leak-proof. This unit is really unlike anything else you’ll find on the market.” While many restroom trailers on the market have interiors that are somewhat cramped, the Explorer is spacious. That was a designed element, according to Potma, which allows workers on construction sites or on oil and gas fields access to the facility without needing to shed heavy clothing and Ron Hipel, right, a technician for McKee Technologies – Explorer Trailers, points out some of the features of the tools beforehand. It had some scratches on it, but that’s about it.” Potma says he is encouraged by the positive reception to the Comfort Station The washroom includes stainless steel sinks, easy-to-clean fiberglasshe saw at the Expo. “We saw a ton of interest, especially from manufacturing reinforced plastic interior wall panels and metal floors. Large fleet of high-volume vac trucks enhances New Mexico contractor’s productivity

or tough jobs such as removing tailings from reserve pits at oilfield drilling sites, Riley Industrial Services Inc. might run eight vacuum trucks 10 hours a day, six days a week for weeks at a time. In those instances, reliability and productivity clearly are critical, which is why the company owns 26 Supersucker vacuum trucks made by Super Products. “And that’s just one job out of the year,” says Glen Riley, vice-president of maintenance at the large industrial-cleaning firm based in Farmington, N.M. “We were just at a copper mine where we were running four trucks for 10 hours a day, six days a week. We might be at some sites for up to a month, cleaning out years of accumulated sludge and other materials.” The trucks’ model years run from 1996 to 2009. To minimize the amount of spare parts required for inventory, Riley Industrial specs out all the trucks exactly the same: blowers made by Roots Systems Ltd. (5,800 cfm at 27 inches Hg); 450 hp Series 60 diesel engines made by Detroit Diesel Corp.; 16-cubicyard debris tanks; vibrate-assisted dumping with tilt tanks; Fuller 13-speed transmissions from Eaton Corp.; and tires made by Toyo Tire USA Corp. “We don’t order them with a lot of bells and whistles … that way anybody can operate them,” Riley explains. “If I teach any of our men how to run one of our vacuum trucks, then they can pretty much run all of our vacuum trucks. This way, there aren’t any surprises for our mechanics, either. If they know how to fix one, they know how to fix ’em all.”

26 Supersucker vacuum trucks made by Super Products LLC FUNCTION: Oilfield and other industrial cleaning services FEATURES: 16-yard debris tanks, Roots blowers, vibrate-assisted tilt dumping, Fuller transmissions and Detroit diesel engines COST: About $250,000 to $300,000 each

The trucks are out working in every kind of harsh environment imaginable, from rugged terrain to extreme heat and cold. They clean at wastewater and sewage-treatment plants, chemical plants, coal mines and gas and oilfields, where they’re used to remove everything from reserve pits to flowback water in huge tanks. But the Supersuckers – which represent a roughly $6.5 million investment – take a lot of punishment and keep on running, Riley notes. They’re workhorses in a large fleet of equipment that includes 31 hydroexcavating trucks made by GapVax Inc.; 10 wet-vac trucks manufactured by Global Vacuum Systems Inc.; 19 waterblasting machines made by Gardner Denver and NLB Corp.; 70 pressure washers made by AaLadin Cleaning Systems; 225 18-wheel trucks; and more than 100 flatbed trailers.

“We like the Supersuckers the most because they’re simple and they vacuum the best,” he says. “They rely on a very simple design … the way the air flows through the bed, into the cyclones and through the dry side of the filtration system and out. We run the same kind of blowers in all of our trucks, but the Supersuckers vacuum the best.” Riley also lauds the Supersuckers’ filtration system, “We like the Supersuckers the which is both efficient and maintenance friendly. If a bag most because they’re simple needs to be changed out, an and they vacuum the best. operator can do it in a few minutes. That, in turn, improves They rely on a very simple productivity because it minimizes design … the way the air downtime – an important factor when performing works during flows through the bed, into time-sensitive plant shutdowns, the cyclones and through Riley notes. The company’s the dry side of the filtration Supersuckers are also very system and out.” reliable, Riley adds, noting that Glen Riley one of the Supersuckers has racked up 28,000 hours – well over a more typical life cycle of about 5,000 hours. Riley Industrial enhances the trucks’ longevity by lining the bottom half of the tank interiors with 1/4-inch-thick fiberglass, then painting the top half with an epoxy coating. The tanks get recoated every 10 years to prevent rust, Riley says. Fewer breakdowns also promote customer loyalty and increase repeat business, as well as word-of-mouth referrals, he adds. The company reduces the odds of equipment breakdowns by adhering to a rigorous preventive maintenance schedule. “We don’t wait for something to break down,” Riley says. “When we hit 5,000 hours, we start thinking about putting in a rebuilt transmission and do it at our convenience, rather than have it go out while we’re on a job in, say, one of the 10 states where we work. We do a lot of preventive maintenance … it’s the key to our operation.” Riley Industrial opts for the largest debris tanks possible to minimize trips to disposal facilities and maximize vacuum time. It’s not unusual for operators to drive about 100 miles one way to a disposal facility, so maximizing payloads is critical. “When a disposal site is a two-hour drive away, we want to carry as much as we can without violating weight-restriction laws,” Riley points out. The Supersuckers also enhance employee safety by minimizing the amount of laborers required on job sites. For instance, the vacuum trucks allow the company to do some jobs with a two-man crew that used to require a 10man crew. “That’s dramatically fewer people working in potentially precarious conditions,” Riley notes. “The more people you have working, the better the chances are that someone can get hurt. Plus the hoses can reach places were laborers can’t get to.” Overall, Riley praises the Supersuckers for boosting the company’s productivity and profitability over the years. “We’re working them hard every day and they don’t give us a lot of trouble,” he says. “We get them up and running and they just run. Aside from normal wear and tear, they rarely break down. We couldn’t operate as efficiently as we do without them.” GOMC

Crane lifts with minimal sway, telescopes into buildings
By Ed Wodalski
The 450-ton, six-axle ATF 400G-6 all-terrain crane from Tadano America Corp. can lift 83,800 pounds out to a 46-foot radius with the boom fully extended. It has a 257.5-foot (78-meter) main boom that requires no additional suspension and Lift Adjuster system that reduces tail swing for work in confined spaces. The optional 101.7-foot (31-meter) hydraulic telescopic luffing jib (HTLJ) enables objects to be telescoped beyond building edges and into roofed structures. The crane is 58.7 feet long, 9.8 feet wide and 13 feet tall (17.9 by 3 by 3.99 meters) and features all-wheel steering and 26,455-pound axle load. Powered by an eight-cylinder, 653 hp Mercedes-Benz Blue Tec engine, the crane has an automatic transmission and delivers 2,213 ft-lbs of torque. The superstructure engine is powered by a six-cylinder, 265 hp MercedesBenz Blue Tec engine that delivers 811 ft-lbs of torque. “All-wheel steering helps reduce tire wear and enables the crane to be maneuvered into confined spaces,” says Thomas Schramm, general manager sales and marketing for Tadano Faun of Germany. Four outrigger bases with a maximum 304,235-pound counterweight are standard. Safety features include Lift Adjuster and Release Adjuster system designed to minimize load sway. When lifting heavy loads in a small area, the Lift Adjuster is activated, enabling the crane to automatically adjust to the load. “The Lift Adjuster system enables the operator to use the crane’s automated radius adjustment for minimum sway when the load is picked up,” Schramm says. “This enables the operator to focus on the lift rather than the crane’s instruments. The Release Adjuster positions the boom head above the center of the load.” The crane is designed to operate under extreme hot and humid conditions. It has a torsion-resistant frame made from fine-grained steel and central lubrication system. The ZF-TC-Tronic HD TC 3040 SO heavy-duty transmission with torque converter and electro-pneumatically operated dry-type clutch has

12 forward and two reverse gears. All six axles can be steered and four can be driven (first and sixth are not driven; the third axle has a longitudinal differential lock). The full-width, two-person carrier cab (made of metal and fiberglass) has air-cushioned, adjustable seats (driver seat with heater) and engine-based heater, air conditioning, radio/CD player, and cruise control with hill braking. The superstructure cab has a tiltable cockpit with hydraulically cushioned, adjustable seat with heater, engine-based heater, air conditioning, radio/ CD player and LCD graphic display for crane operation. The electrical crane controls have two joystick levers for simultaneous operation. The five-section, telescopic boom is made of high-tensile, finegrained steel, consisting of one base section and four telescoping sections that extend by means of a single telescopic cylinder. All telescopic sections are extendable under partial load. HELLO-NET fleet management technology remotely monitors machine activity, work history, position data and maintenance information among the crane, manufacturer and owner. 281/869-0030; www. tadanoamerica.com.

Devon Energy to spend $1 billion in Eagle Ford
By Cory Dellenbach

Devon Energy to spend $1 billion in Eagle Ford Oklahoma City-based Devon Energy Corp. plans to invest $1.1 billion into the Eagle Ford Shale in 2014, according to company officials. The company has plans to drill 200 wells in the region this year. Last month, Devon sold the majority of its Canadian conventional assets to Canadian Natural Resources Limited for $2.8 billion and they intend to use the proceeds to repay the debts incurred for the Eagle Ford shale expansion, officials say. Devon Energy acquired 82,00 net acres in the Eagle Ford Shale from Geo Southern Energy for $6 billion in late February. The acquired assets are located in DeWitt and Lavaca counties in Texas and have at least 1,200 undrilled locations. BP creating new business for onshore assets BP Upstream CEO Lamar McKay announced March 4 that BP would create a separate and more competitive business to manage its onshore oil and gas assets, including its shale operations. BP PLC, which will own the new business, currently oversees the region through its North America Gas group based in Houston. McKay says that his company has reshaped its North America Gas portfolio over the past few years. They did that by shedding non-core assets and concentrating on unconventional development such as the Eagle Ford Shale. The business will have a separate management team and separate governance, processes and systems designed to address the region’s unique competitive and operating environment, McKay says. BP plans to start reporting separate financial results for the new business in 2015. Heated frac-tank fleet operator expands It gets cold in the winter in North Dakota and hydraulic fracturing operations need hot water. Intercept Energy Services – a Canadian company that specializes in heated frac water trucks – has deployed two new frac water heated-tank trucks to North Dakota. Intercept trucks can heat water to 140 degrees F and incur only 1 to 3 percent heat loss during transportation, according to Intercept President Randy Hayward. Hayward noted that the company only bills for the hours that the heated water tanks are used, not for the time it takes the truck to set up on the well site. Intercept uses a propane-based heating system to heat the water. MarkWest Energy to beef up operations MarkWest Energy Partners LP announced plans to build 17 major processing and fractionation projects in the Midwest and Northeast. The 17 new projects will take place at nine locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Denver-based company does most of its work in the Utica and

Marcellus shale plays. The company says it has brought seven new projects online in the past four months, including five cryogenic processing plants and two fractionation facilities. Cryogenic processing plants separate natural gas liquids, while fractionation plants separate those liquids into butane, ethane and propane parts. GE, Chevron Corp. expanding partnership General Electric and Chevron Corp. have announced plans to expand their partnership and promises to send business to GE’s planned Oil and Gas Technology Center in Oklahoma City. The Chevron GE Technology Alliance will focus initially on flowmeters for oil, natural gas and other products. “It’s one of the many examples of things we’re going to do at the center, and the kind of collaboration we’re going to do with the industry,” says Mike Ming, general manager of the Oklahoma City facility. Mining company agrees to settlement As a result of a settlement, Alpha Natural Resources Inc., Alpha Appalachian Holdings (formerly Massey Energy) and 66 subsidiaries have agreed to spend an estimated $200 million to install and operate wastewater treatment systems and implement systemwide upgrades to reduce discharges of pollution from coal mines in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The settlement, which covers about 79 active mines and 25 processing plants in the five states, was announced March 5 by the Department of Justice and the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA estimates that the upgrades and advanced treatment required will reduce discharges of total dissolved solids by over 36 million pounds each year, and will cut metals and other pollutants by approximately 9 million pounds per year. The companies will also pay a civil penalty of $27.5 million for thousands of permit violations, which is the largest penalty in U.S. history. The companies must also build and operate treatment systems to eliminate violations of selenium and salinity limits, and also implement systemwide improvements to ensure future compliance with the Clean Water Act. They’re also required to maintain a database to track violations and compliance efforts at each outfall. The government complaint alleged that, between 2006 and 2013, Alpha and its subsidiaries violated limits in 336 of their state-issued CWA permits, resulting in the discharge of excess volumes of pollutants into hundreds of rivers and streams in the five states. The violations also included discharge of pollutants without a permit. GOMC
