Mark Scott Travis We Service What We Sell
By Skeet Wolters

Call it serendipity,
coincidence or luck; here is
proof we live in a small world.
While vacationing in Newport,
Road Island I enjoyed a
delicious cup of coffee in
the hotel lobby, and after a
second cup, I was hooked.
The hostess told me that it
was made by Newport Coffee
Traders and she graciously
sent me home with several
packages. Google helped
me find the address to order
my own supply, and low and
behold, I was very surprised to
learn it was a Coldwater, Ohio
address! That is right, our
own Intercontinental Coffee
on North Seventh Street in
Coldwater. I now purchase
my favorite Cliff Walk, a dark
roast that satisfies my morning
coffee obsession, right here at
home.
I am greeted at the door
with a warm welcome even
though I only purchase one
box of 24 packages at a time,
guaranteeing that I will always
have the freshest of coffee.
Each package makes 8-10
cups of my morning Joe.
Local resident, Dale
Droesch started the company
in 1969 as a family business
in his Walnut Street garage
before moving to the Seventh
Street address. They have been
serving the coffee industry
for the last 40 years with
the continuing goal of Great
Service and Quality Products.
His son, Darrin Droesch, took
over the day-to-day operations
of the business in 1999. Dale
is now retired but still checks
in to see how things are going
and visits with the boys. The
company provides work for
around 12 employees including
three of the Droesch sons.
Over the years, they have
grown into more than just
Office Coffee. They offer
cappuccino, single cup, water
coolers and filters, specialty
coffees and a full line of Allied
Products. As they grew, they
strived to know their customers
and their goal is still to give
them the best service possible
with no long-term contracts.
Mr. Droesch en-
thusiastically talks about
starting his business and the
commitment to hard work
that he, his wife, Dolores,
and their family put into their
entrepreneur labors. I call
this an example of the high
work ethic of Mercer County
residents. Mr. Droesch related
to me a quote he enjoys and I,
the coffee lover, would like to
agree, “Coffee drinkers make
better thinkers.”

to Mayor Eugene Steiner.
The New Bremen Cardi-

The college, taught by Ohio

ulty, opened its doors to 286
students on September 10,
1962.
Cold enough for
you?? Sure is for me. I
hate to think what this
winter is going to be like
temperature wise. Let’s
hope it will be a carbon
copy of last winter. I guess
I shouldn’t wish for no
snow as the farmers will
need that moisture come
next spring at planting
time. I guess you can’t
have it both ways. In the
end we will take what the
Good Lord gives us and
like it or not.
Football is starting to
heat up and you had better
get out there next Friday
night and root the home
team to a victory. It is
good to see Celina with
a winner this year. They
have had some bad years
and were about due for a
good season. Lets hope
they make the playoffs and
go all the way to state.
If you caught the
Presidential debates you
surely got your moneys
worth as it was interesting
to listen to both of those
guys and then try to make
up your mind just how you
are going to vote. I think I
am pretty well set at least
I hope so. It is going to
be very interesting come
November. I hate to
think how much money
has been spent on this
election. I sure could put
all that money to some
good uses but not on the
election. See you all next
week.
That’s My Opinion........
What’s yours??

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options — so it’s a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. That’s why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isn’t available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure you’re getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
“How much should I contribute?” At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from “free money.” Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if you’re eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided you’ve had your account for five years and don’t start
taking withdrawals until you’re 59½.
Of course, it’s not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success — it’s also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, you’ll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
• Your age — Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
you’ll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but you’ll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
• Your goals — Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
• Your other retirement income sources — If you have a variety of
retirement income sources — a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits — you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Here’s a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
you’ll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways — so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)’s performance.

When you add a child to your family, either through birth or adoption, it’s obviously an exciting and joyful
time in your life —and it’s also a busy one, as you deal with all the challenges and commitments faced by
all parents. However, hectic as your life may be, you’ll still need to think about making some key fnancial
arrangements to accommodate your newchild.
Here are some suggestions to consider:
* Get a Social Security number. You’ll want to obtain a Social Security number for your child as soon as
possible.
* Speak with a tax advisor. If you’re adopting a child, you might be eligible for federal income tax credits.
* Build an emergency fund. Obviously, a new child may mean a variety of new expenses. If you aren’t
prepared for these costs, many of which may crop up suddenly, you might be forced to dip into your long-
terminvestments. Such a move could slow your progress toward your important goals, such as a comfortable
retirement. To avoid this potential problem, try to build an emergency fund containing six months’ worth of living
expenses. Put the money in a liquid account so you can access it quickly and without penalty.
* Research options for a special needs child. If you have a special needs child, you may want to explore
any available government benefts and consider speaking with an attorney about your legal options.
* Consider disability insurance. You may want to purchase disability insurance, or review your current
policy, to ensure your family’s needs are covered should you become ill or disabled and cannot work for a
while.
* Reviewyour life insurance. It’s essential that you maintain adequate life insurance to cover your family’s
future fnancial needs, including education costs. While your employer may offer you a group policy, it might
not be suffcient to keep up with your growing family. There’s no one “formula” for determining the appropriate
amount of life insurance, but a professional fnancial advisor can review your family situation and recommend
suitable coverage.
* Save for college. Given the high costs of higher education, it’s never too soon to start putting away
money for college. You may want to consider a tax-advantaged account, such as a 529 plan, which offers high
contribution limits and provides you with the fexibility to switch benefciaries, if necessary.
* Review/add benefciary designations. You may want to change or add benefciaries to your IRA, 401(k),
life insurance, annuities and other accounts.
* Explore a custodial account. You might want to consider a custodial account, such as an UGMA or
UTMA, that allows you to transfer assets for the beneft of a child under 21. (Consult with your tax and legal
advisors before making this move.)
Of course, you don’t have to take care of all these items at once. But by methodically working your way
through this list, you will eventually adjust your overall fnancial strategy to include your new child — which
means you’ll be helping your growing family make progress toward its important goals.

Influenza is a serious
disease that can lead
to hospitalization and
sometimes even death.
Every flu season is different,
and influenza infection can
affect people differently.
Even healthy people can get
very sick from the flu and
spread it to others.
Community Health
Professionals (CHP) of
Celina is offering flu shots
daily Monday-Friday, 1 to 3
p.m. at its offices at 816 Pro
Dr. beginning Oct. 10.
In addition, there are
several walk-in clinics
scheduled throughout
the county this month,
beginning with a drive thru
clinic on Sat. Oct. 6, 9 a.m.
to Noon and Mon. Oct. 8, 3
to 6 p.m. at the CHP office
in Celina.
There is no cost for those
ages 65 and older with
Medicare Part B; the fee is
$30 for others age 18 and
older.
The “seasonal flu
season” in the united
States can begin as early as
October and last as late as
May. During this time, flu
viruses are circulating in the
population.
According to the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), an
annual seasonal flu vaccine
is the best way to reduce the
chances that you will get
seasonal flu and lessen the
chance that you will spread
it to others.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that they’d be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs’ lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldn’t afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brian’s accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
“Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,”
Louie Hoyng said. “It gave Brian his life back.”
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
“When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh,” Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasn’t long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, “Louie would forget to send us a bill.” He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
“The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son,” Overman said. “They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.”
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outside—but it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
“We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann,” Dorothy Hoyng said. “They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.”

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writer’s Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsett’s special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbacher’s proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Club’s major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Don’t leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohio’s Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

Have you tried the washing
balls. The balls will last for
several years and can be
stored in your washer so they
are ready to go for every load
of wash. It works by changing
the chemistry of the water
to hydrogen peroxide that is
known to disinfect. Place the
balls in the sun every month
or so to reactivate. No need to
carry home large containers
of washing detergents. you
will need to treat stains as
you would do with any other
detergent.

The Great Escape
By Susan
Elizabeth Phillips

Reviewed by
Skeet Wolters
Library Assistant

The Great Escape is
fiction at its best, meaning
so unbelievable, and yet
so entertaining. I enjoyed
this book in the audio edi-
tion as it pleasantly past
away my hours exercising
and gardening. Author,
Susan Elizabeth Phillips,
created several memorable
characters that cheered my
heart. Lucy Jorik is the
adopted daughter of the
first lady President of our
country and as she pre-
pares to marry, she leaves
her future husband at the
alter and literally bolts
from the church in a choir
robe. Her best friend en-
courages her, agreeing
that the intended groom is
not the person for her. The
only reason given through
the book is that he is just
“too perfect.”
Well, turns out she
hops on a motor bike
with one of the guests
she remembers seeing at
the rehearsal dinner and
after she bribes him with
money, he bikes her to a
cheap hotel and protects
her from the paparazzi
and media. Panda is of
rough character and plays
the tough roll to encour-
age her top escape him by
returning to her parents,
but she rejects all of this,
and even enjoys his coarse
mannerisms. After a few
days they sleep together,
have a falling out, and he
insists she call her parents
and he makes plans for
her return. Turns out he is
working for the president
as a bodyguard for Lucy.
Not to spoil the story I
will leave some for the
booklover to lean while
reading.
Lucy feels affection
for Panda, learns he has
a home in Michigan and
she travels there and turns
squatter in his cottage
while he is away. She
meets interesting neigh-
bors, including a young
teen and beekeeper, where
we learn about bees, hon-
ey making and how to
survive disaster. The lo-
cal residents make her ac-
quaintance and add to the
story. Panda returns to his
home and she learns of his
past and why he cannot
make a commitment, etc,
etc. Maybe predictable,
but again, it was very en-
tertaining. Being a cham-
pion of women, I liked
the idea of a first lady
president and that got me
hooked right away. The
library has The Great Es-
cape in regular and large
print along with the audio
version. Happy reading.

County Historical
Museum, 130

block east of the
Courthouse) at
Celina. The public
is welcome; there

The 13
th
Annual
Antique Military
& Gun Exhibit
will be hosted
by the Museum
of the Soldier,
Portland, Indiana,
and by Local Gun
Collectors and
private citizens.
This October
28 Display is
an exhibit for
the Museum
of the Soldier, and the
Mercer County Historical
Society’s celebration of the
Bicentennial of the War of
1812, with other Historians
across the united States.
The Mission of the Mercer
County Historical Society
is To Preserve Mercer
County’s History and To
Educate the Public about
that History. The Theme for
this exhibit, is “To Protect
our Military Heritage.”
In the photograph, the
Niagara, commanded by
Oliver Hazard Perry, was
brought into the Battle of
Lake Erie on September 10,
1813, and helped defeat the
British fleet during the War
of 1812. The victory, which
saved the Old Northwest
Territory and gave control
of the upper Great Lakes
to the united States, was
immortalized by Perry with
his now famous line, “We
have met the enemy and
they are ours!”
With her once-in-a-
lifetime restoration, the
Niagara is now open to
the public. Her 175
th

Anniversary celebration
was held in 1988. This
Flagship is located on Lake
Erie, at Erie, PA. What was
exciting to me, when we
visited the Niagara, is that it
is a two-masted ship, known
as a “brig,” used during
the War of 1812. Captain
James Riley’s ship, known
as the “Commerce,” was
also a two-masted ship, i.e.
a brig, which Captain Riley
sailed from Connecticut
to the Caribbean for trade,
and then to Gibraltar and
the Canary Islands before
returning home, immediately
following the War of 1812.
It was on one of these
trading voyages that Captain
Riley was shipwrecked
during a fog, off the coast
of Africa, whereby he and
his crew were captured by
Arabs, held for ransom, and
several months later were
able to return to the united
States. When I walked on
the deck of the Niagara, I
thought about the challenges
Captain Riley and his crew
faced while sailing their brig
across the Atlantic Ocean
for weeks on a voyage.
Former Judge
Carleton Reiser loved
military history and
collected books and
artifacts related to this
theme. He was the
historian who donated the
War of 1812 ship cannons
to the Mercer County
Historical Society, which
are on exhibit at the
Mercer County Historical
Museum. Also on
exhibit, at the October 28
Military and Gun Exhibit
are items which the
Museum of the Soldier
from Portland will
show for this afternoon.
Military accoutrements
from the War of 1812
will complement this
exhibit. Also on display
will be muskets from
that time period by Gun
Collectors.
you will recall that
the forts at Fort Recovery
and Fort Adams, here
in Mercer County, were
used as supply forts, for Fort
Defiance and Fort Meigs
in northwest Ohio, during
the War of 1812. Anthony
Shane, from Shanes Crossing
(now Rockford) not only
was involved in the Indian
Wars of the 1790’s, but also
was involved in the War of
1812. The History of Fort
Defiance gives references
to Anthony Shane not only
assisting with Military
Intelligence but also hunting
deer and delivering the deer
to Fort Defiance for feeding
the Military. Many Mercer
Countians were involved in
the Military in the War of
1812.

Question: Are probiotics good for my pet?
Answer: Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide a health beneft to your
pet. They are usually a benefcial bacteria or yeast that helps re-innoculate your pet’s
gut. They need to be given in the correct amount to be benefcial. They are given as a
supplement or as part of the diet.
Pets can experience an overgrowth of harmful bacteria. It is estimated that there are
up to 500 different kinds of bacteria in a dog’s or cat’s digestive tract. Normally, benefcial
and harmful bacteria strike a balance in the digestive tract so there are no detrimental
effects to your pet. However, there are a number of factors that could upset this balance
and cause over-growth of harmful bacteria. This can be caused by parasites, a change
in diet, exposure to a virus or bacteria, drugs, old age, stress, or infammation of the
gastrointestinal tract. The imbalance then leads to diarrhea, vomiting, and gas.
It is frst important to understand how a probiotic works. The general goal of a
probiotic is to displace the potentially pathogenic or disease-promoting bacteria with
benefcial bacteria. These benefcial bacteria, called microfora, can help digest food,
help produce energy for the cells lining the digestive tract, restore benefcial bacteria
levels, and support the immune system. They also keep harmful bacteria to a minimum.
They do this by adhering to the walls of the intestines, which leaves less room for the
harmful bacteria to colonize there. Microfora also compete for food while altering the
pH of the environment. This makes it less conducive for the survival of harmful bacteria.
Some benefcial bacteria enhance the production of certain antibodies which then coat
and protect the surface of the intestinal tract. Others trigger the immune system of the
gastrointestinal tract which then synthesizes different chemicals and hormones that help
reduce infammation.
Benefts have been seen with diarrhea, gastric ulcerations from infectious causes,
vomiting, gas, and deleterious effects from antibiotics on the gut microfora. They have
also been shown to beneft the treatment of infammatory bowel disease. This is felt due
to the immune modulating effects to reduce infammation.
Before administering a probiotic to your pet, you should consult your veterinarian.
There are many products out there and fnding the correct one for your pet is the key
to its benefts. Many products contain a very low number of benefcial bacteria. Some
contain a completely different species of bacteria than needed. Some do not contain the
live organisms that are needed to survive the acid in the stomach. Your veterinarian can
recommend the appropriate product for your pet by a reputable manufacturer.

A TRADITION ENDS
It was not high school
kids going at it in pads
under the lights on Friday
night, but the Lions’ Cold-
water cross county meet last
Thursday afternoon was just
as exciting and inspirational
an athletic event to watch as
those Friday night contests.
Over twenty teams entered
the event and several hun-
dreds kids were competing
in the boys’ and girls’ junior
high and high school event.
There were four separate
races and even the runners
at the end of the feld often
received deserved applause
from the fans since the kids
may have been trying for
their personal best times.
The Lions’ meet was also
the opportunity to see both
a female and male runner
who are probably the favor-
ites to win the state cham-
pionships in their divisions
in a couple of weeks at
Columbus. The boys’ and
girls’ varsity races each
had over a hundred entries
from many of the top cross
country schools in the area,
but Coldwater’s Sarah Kan-
ney and Versailles’ Samuel
Prakel were both at the top
of their form. High school
cross country races of 3.2
miles are often won by run-
ners in fnal dashes to the
fnish line, but Kanney and
Prakel both fnished with
leads of over 300 yards. It
is exciting to watch excel-
lence, be it in basketball,
football, volleyball, base-
ball, or distance running.
The Lions will be lack-
ing something next fall
when Mike Eyink will not
be running from one van-
tage point to another with
his enthusiastic attitude and
verbal support for his kids.
Eyink has been coaching
cross county for 27 years,
but still remains as excited
as any frst-year mentor
when he gets that excep-
tional effort from one of his
runners. Eyink has a long
history with distance run-
ning at St. Henry. It was in
1974/75, Mike’s junior year
in high school, that coun-
selor Joe Graham recruited
a few basketball players
to start a cross country
team. “It was a little more
laid back than it is today,”
stated Eyink. Encouraging
athletes to participate in the
sport was an initial goal of
the young coach. He had to
compete against the very
successful football and vol-
leyball programs and ex-
plained cross country was
really not “that hard.” The
program did not change rap-
idly and for years it existed
in the background without
the best athletes participat-
ing. ultimately some kids
bought into his philosophy
that distance running is
something anyone can do
and excel at if the effort is
there. “I believe, for ex-
ample, that basketball is a
sport where an athlete can
work, but there may be a
level that one reaches and
plateaus; whereas a distant
runner can continue to im-
prove and excel if the de-
sire and effort is there.”
Mike now retires from a
program that is at the top.
“The kids now run in the
summer and do not want
to let each other down.”
His boys’ team has quali-
fed for the state meet for
the last fve years. Eyink
indicated a return trip to
Columbus will be a chal-
lenge this year with at least
fve very strong teams in
the Skins’ district and only
four advancing. Perhaps the
best thing about the Lions’
Cross County Meet is the
opportunity to experience
it again. This afternoon the
MAC Conference Meet is
at Coldwater again with the
junior high runs at 5 p.m.
and varsity starting at 6.
Sectional meets are the fol-
lowing week.

The Cavaliers, who lead
the Division V Region 20
playoff race, come into the
contest at 7-0 overall and
5-0 in the MAC after a
7-0 win at Anna in the rain
Friday night.
Meanwhile, Marion
Local enters with a 6-1 slate
in all games while standing
4-1 in the conference
following a 38-22 victory
over Mercer County rival
St. Henry last Friday.
The Flyers also lead their
region in the playoff race in
Division VI, Region 24.
The Flyers only loss this
season came in 24-14 week
five contest to Versailles,
one of only two teams to
come within two scores of
the Cavaliers. Coldwater
defeated the Tigers 21-7
in week three in Darke
County.
Coldwater has scored at
least 34 points in each of
their other five games and
have given up double digit
points only to week one
opponent Kenton (a 41-22
Cavalier win).
Marion Local saw its
offense rebound in Friday’s
win over the Redskins. The
Flyers had scored at least
40 points in each of the first
four weeks before being
held to 14 in consecutive
weeks against Versailles
and Delphos St. John’s.
Another Mercer County
rivalry takes place in
Rockford as St. Henry
makes the trip to take on
Parkway.
The Redskins (4-3, 2-3
MAC) currently stand in
fourth place in the playoff
point race and look to
close the year with three
wins to lock in a home
playoff game. St. Henry has
dropped consecutive games
to Coldwater and Marion
Local but looks to rebound
against the Panthers.
Parkway (0-7, 0-5 MAC)
is still looking for its first
victory of the season after
falling to Minster 43-16
last Friday. The black and
gold scored a season high
22 points back in week
three against Marion Local
but have only scored 22
points in four games since.
The Panthers have allowed
more than 40 points four
times this season.
Celina (6-1, 5-1 WBL)
starts a stretch of three
huge games to conclude
the regular season when the
Bulldogs visit Kenton (4-3,
4-2 WBL) Friday.
The Wildcats are coming
off of an upset 27-26 loss
at Lima Bath on Friday so
they are sure to come out
sky high in their return to
Hardin County. Kenton’s
offense has put up at least
50 points three times this
season but the Wildcat
defense has allowed more
than 40 points three times
as well.
The Bulldogs, who
currently stand eighth in
the Division II, Region
8 playoff ratings, are
averaging 38 points per
game while allowing 19.
The final game involving
a Mercer County team
on Friday takes place at
Minster as Fort Recovery
(3-4, 1-4) travels to the
home of the Wildcats (5-2,
3-2).
Minster is riding a two
game winning streak after
victories over Parkway and
Anna but also has two tough
games remaining against

a tough slate left on the
schedule with contests
against St. Henry and
Coldwater in the final two
weeks. The Indians have
been held to single digits
in points three times this
season and have lost four of
their last five contests.

Students place
in competition
A component of the recently established agriculture pro-
gram at Wright State Lake Campus included a course on dairy
cattle evaluation. Participating students learned about dairy
cattle physiology, pedigree, linear evaluation, and oral defense
of reasons. Students in the class competed in the National
Association of College Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA)
Dairy Judging Contest held in Wooster, Ohio on April 17th.
Members of the Wright State Lake Campus teams did well
in the Associates and Bachelors Degree Divisions of competi-
tion. In the Associates Degree Division awards were given
for top placings in the respective breeds judged that day (Hol-
stein, Ayrshire, and Jersey) as well as overall individual and
team awards. Second Place in Ayrshire (Associate Division)
was Damon Bertke and Third Place (Associate Division) was
Brian Schulte. Overall awards indicated the team placed well.
Damon Bertke was the Second Place Individual and the Asso-
ciates Degree team was 2nd Place in their Division.
The Bachelors Degree Team won their division in compe-
tition. Garrett Dorsten placed 2nd overall as an individual,
with Kevin Kaup placing third. The Bachelors Degree team
was 2nd in each of the breed divisions (Holstein, Jersey, and
Ayrshire), as well as placing 2nd as a team in Oral Reasons. A
number of the Bachelors Degree Team Members placed indi-
vidually in breed competition with Garrett Dorsten placing
Second in the Jersey Breed, while Kevin Kaup was Third in
Holsteins and First in Ayrshire.
Representing Wright State Lake Campus in competition included: Damon Bertke, Garrett Dorsten, Alex Fullenkamp,
Abe Gibbs, Jordan Hellwarth, Kevin Kaup, Greg Koesters, Tyler Koesters, Joanna Osterloh, Kassie Pease, Wendi
Phillips, Brian Schulte, and Matt Thobe. The team was coached by Dr. Greg Homan and sponsored by Farm Credit
Services.

Parkway FFA Presents Community
with Blue and Gold Award
The Parkway FFA
Chapter awarded three
area businesses during the
80th annual FFA banquet.
The Blue and Gold award
is awarded to businesses
that donate to benefit the
Parkway FFA Chapter and
local community. The
three businesses were
Willshire Sportsman Club,
Helena Agronomic Center
in Coldwater, and Burtch
Seed.
Willshire Sportsman
Club sponsored the Park-
way Wildlife and Nature
Interpretation teams. They
provided the team mem-
bers with t-shirts as well as
training to prepare them
for the events. Willshire
Sportsman Club paid for
each members entry fees
to each event as well.
Helena Agronomic Center in Coldwater has made many donations to the Parkway FFA for many activites and
awards given. They also provided materials needed for the FFA Mercer County Invitational. Helena in turn is a
part of the Syngenta blue jackets program in which the Parkway FFA Chapter received a free FFA jacket for
members to use.
Burtch Seed has helped not only the chapter, but also the community by furthering the agriculture advance-
ments. Burtch Seed has made many donations for the events and activities Parkway FFA participates in through-
out the year. They also have partnered with the Parkway FFA to hold the Burtch Seed Customer Appreciation Day
which helps promote the Parkway FFA Chapter and Parkway Local Schools.
For these businesses dedication for helping the Parkway FFA, they have received lifetime membership to
Parkway FFA Boosters as well as membership to the National FFA Alumni. The Parkway FFA Chapter would like
to thank these businesses for their support.

Ohio Farm Bureau
Hosts Grow and
Know Day
Attendees can learn skills to
manage their property
The growing popularity of
gardening, food preservation
and other “back to basics”
topics will be the focus of a
new day-long seminar spon-
sored by the Ohio Farm Bu-
reau Federation.
The first ever “Grow and
Know Day’s” will be held
July 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
at the Bob Evans Farm in Rio
Grande. The event is billed as
a how-to seminar for property
owners, animal lovers, gar-
deners and food enthusiasts.
“It’s going to be a great day
of hands-on learning,” said
Cara Lawson, promotion spe-
cialist for Ohio Farm Bureau
and one of the coordinators
for the event. “This program-
ming is in direct response to
members wanting this sort of
information.”
Attendees will be able to
select four different breakout
sessions with topics including
gardening, backyard egg pro-
duction, horse ownership,
food preparation and preser-
vation, fruit and nut tree man-
agement, property protection,
herb production, fence and
barn maintenance, beekeep-
ing and more.
Cost to participate is $25
for Farm Bureau members
and $85 for non members,
(which includes a member-
ship). In addition to the pro-
gram, registration includes a
Bob Evans cookout lunch on
the farm. Registration dead-
line is July 1. Event registra-
tion can be made by calling
614-246-8276 or visit
OurOhio.org for ticket infor-
mation, program descriptions
and more Grow and Know
experiences, including cook-
ing and gardening competi-
tions.
The vision of the Ohio
Farm Bureau Federation is to
create a partnership between
farmers and consumers. In ad-
dition to farmers, members
include gardeners, food and
wine enthusiasts, animal own-
ers, and anyone who enjoys
rural Ohio.
Fresh Country Air
MATT REESE
My job as an agricultural
journalist is fun because it al-
lows me to travel this fascinat-
ing state on a regular basis, of-
ten on Ohio’s 26 beautiful des-
ignated scenic byways (five of
which have a national designa-
tion). The five National Scenic
Byways in the state highlight
some of the state’s finest fea-
tures, including Ohio’s bounti-
ful agricultural production.
Lake Erie Coastal National
Scenic Byway
June is wine month and there
is no better route in the Midwest
to travel for fine wines than
Ohio’s northern coast. Ohio’s
wine business is booming and
gaining more international rec-
ognition every year for its high
quality wine production along
the temperate shores of Lake
Erie.
This route also offers ample
natural attractions for fishing
and bird enthusiasts and the
thrill-seeking appeal of Cedar
Point. Roller coasters, walleye
and wine, how can you go
wrong?
Historic National Road
National Scenic Byway
Much of this byway is lined
with interesting agricultural at-
tractions. Dull Homestead Farm
in Montgomery County features
a diversified operation including
hogs and seed corn, but the real
attention getter is the farm’s tow-
ering windmills and dedication to
renewable energy. The Dulls
have a visitor’s center to inform
guests about the farm. Devine
Farms and Pigeon Roost Farm in
Licking County offer pumpkins
and a myriad of fun family ori-
ented activities in the late sum-
mer and fall. The trip through
Belmont County passes near the
state’s largest Christmas tree
farm run by the Feisley family.
The renowned Dickinson Cattle
Co. Longhorn Cattle Ranch is
also near the route, just outside
of Barnesville. Also, be sure to
note the productive corn and soy-
bean fields lining much of Route
40 that are pumping dollars into
the economy and biofuels into
our vehicles.
Amish Country National
Scenic Byway
Few routes through Ohio of-
fer more picturesque glimpses of
modern and Amish agriculture
than this byway winding through
the heart of the nation’s largest
Amish community in and around
Holmes and Wayne counties.
Grazing dairy cattle, rolling hay
fields and plenty of down home
Amish appeal (and merchandise)
attract many visitors each year.
Ohio leads the nation in Swiss
cheese production, and ranks
high in other types of cheese pro-
duction, largely due to this region
of the state.
Ohio River National Scenic
Byway
It is hard to beat the rolling
landscape, charming towns, his-
torical and agricultural attractions
that ooze from this 452-mile
route along the Ohio River
through 14 counties. A few of my
favorite stops along the way, or
nearby the designated byway, in-
clude Sweetapple Farms (agri-
tainment), Stacy Family Farms
(strawberries) and Grimm’s
Green Acres (apples) in Washing-
ton County; the bridge from
Galia County to Point Pleasant,
West Virginia, home of the mys-
terious Mothman that inspired a
book and movie; the appealing
murals in Portsmouth; and some
tasty Montgomery Inn ribs and a
Reds game in Cincinnati.
The Canal Way National
Scenic Byway
This byway runs from Cleve-
land to Dover along the path of the
Ohio and Erie Canal and offers
several agricultural destinations.

In an effort to live a more
environmentally friendly
lifestyle, consumers have
embraced organic foods
in record numbers. They
stand behind the idea that
organic products are not
only better for them, but
also better for the planet.
But the claims that organic
food is safer, healthier and
more eco-friendly may be
more hype than fact. Some
organic foods are not all
that they seem to be, and
when you dig for the dirt
on “organic,” you might be
surprised at what you find.
The variety of organic
products available at spe-
cialty food stores and more
traditional supermarkets
has increased consider-
ably. Food purists and en-
vironmentalists support
this growing trend. Cer-
tified organic foods are
grown without the use of
pesticides, synthetic fer-
tilizers, sewage sludge,
genetically modified or-
ganisms or ionizing radia-
tion. Organically produced
meats are from animals
that do not take antibiot-
ics or growth hormones to
produce heartier cuts. The
uSDA National Organic
Program sees to it that
organic foods meet these
stringent requirements and
also that any companies
that handle or process or-
ganic food before it gets to
the supermarket or restau-
rant are certified as well.
However, consum-
ers who embrace organic
products might not be get-
ting what they think they
are. The term “organic”
conjures up images of local
produce stands and farmers
diligently caring for their
crops. However, as organic
foods have grown in popu-
larity and the organic food
industry has become a
multi-billion dollar indus-
try, the methods of bring-
ing these foods to a store
near you have changed.
While consumers may be-
lieve that organic broccoli
was trucked in from a farm
down the road, it actually
may have traveled thou-
sands of miles -- negating
many environmental ben-
efits in the process.
Many smaller organic
businesses have felt the
pressure to keep up with
mainstream foods and
have joined the ranks of
commercial food produc-
tion. In fact, some smaller
companies have actually
been bought out by large
food giants. Organic Cow,

produces organic frozen
dinners among other items,
is a subsidiary of General
Mills. Many mainstream
food companies have their
own organic alter egos,
which would no doubt
surprise consumers who
support the organic food
movement.
