Shawnee senior
headed to
Louisiana State
By NICK COHEN
The Medford Sun
If Plan B is a full scholarship
to a major university, things are
probably working out pretty well.
That is the situation for
Shawnee High School senior Jar-
ret DeHart.
After not being selected in
Major League Baseball’s annual
draft, DeHart will be headed to
Louisiana State University later
this summer.
“I knew it was a win-win situa-
tion no matter what happened
with the draft,” DeHart said.
“Obviously if I was selected,
then I’d have the opportunity to
go pro, but, if not, I’m headed to
one of the best baseball pro-
grams in the country at LSU.”
DeHart, a left-handed bat and
right-handed arm, signed a Na-
tional Letter of Intent to attend
LSU in February.
As previously reported by The
Sun, the school offered a full
scholarship package, including
room, board and books.
“Jarret is one of the best play-
ers in the northeastern part of
the United States,” LSU Head
Coach Paul Mainieri said at the
time of DeHart’s signing.
Baseball’s draft works differ-
ently than the other major sports
in that players can be drafted di-
rectly from high school.
The player can either choose to
go pro immediately or attend col-
lege for at least three years.
Despite being excited about a
new city and new team with LSU,
there was a level of disappoint-
ment for DeHart about not being
drafted.
On June 7, after the draft
ended, he tweeted “everything
happens for a reason, looks like
I’m going to be heading to LSU.”
He later thanked everyone for
their support.
“I was hopeful but realistic
going into the draft,” DeHart
said. “As I said, everything hap-
pens for a reason, so I’m excited
to be headed to college.”
With bigger and more exciting
opportunities as well as a com-
mitment to LSU on the horizon, it

Special to the Sun
Jarret DeHart of Shawnee High School heads back to the dugout in a game played earlier this season.
DeHart was not selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, so he will be headed for Louisiana
State University to play college ball.
The Medford Township Police
Department kicked-off its new
police officer trading card initia-
tive on June 11.
The program is a component of
the police department’s commu-
nity policing philosophy. It is ex-
pected that the trading card pro-
gram will stimulate a dialogue be-
tween the police and the commu-
nity in a positive light.
Children are encouraged to ask
officers for their individual trad-
ing cards and collect them the
way baseball cards are collected.
“Community policing has been
a core philosophy of the Medford
Township Police Department for
a number of years. We are opti-
mistic that this program will help
build a positive foundation and at-
titude about police at an early age
with our youth,” Police Chief
Richard Meder said.
A total of 30 different trading
cards were produced represent-
ing each police officer in the de-
partment as well as each police K-
9 dog.
The cards contain a photo of
the police officer on the front
along with their name and rank,
and a summary of the officer’s ex-
perience and interests on the
back.
Children from toddlers
through middle school can ap-
proach police officers and obtain
a trading card.
The first child to collect all 30 of
the Medford Police trading cards
and present them at the Medford
Police Station will receive a new
bike courtesy of Robey’s Lawn-
mower Repair.
The program was made possi-
ble through the support of the
Medford Township Police Offi-
cers Association and the Medford
Township Superior Officers Asso-
ciation, as well as several commu-
nity partnerships.
Organizations providing finan-
cial support for the effort were
Medford Masonic Lodge, Headwa-
ter Village Homeowners Associa-
tion, Aloha Pools and Spa, and
Fraternal Order of Police Lodge
No. 56.
It is through this type of collab-
orative partnership with the com-
munity that the Medford Town-
ship Police Department strives to
build trust and foster a safe and
secure environment for our youth
and residents.

DeHart plans to play in summer
leagues to ready himself for school
would have been easy for DeHart
to take his senior year lightly but
he says that is exactly what he
wanted to avoid.
“The draft and what’s coming
next is always in the back of your
mind but you try your best to
take it one day at a time, one play
at a time and make sure you’re
having a productive year,” De-
Hart said. “That preparation is
what gave me the opportunity to
play for LSU.”
Shawnee went 15-10 this sea-
son and entered the South Jersey
Group IV tournament as a six
seed. It reeled off three wins be-
fore losing to No. 1 seed Eastern
High School, 16-6.
DeHart did allow himself the
time to stop and smell the roses
throughout his senior year.
“I made sure to take the time to
sit back and say this is the last
time I’m going to play high school
baseball so just make it fun, and
it was a blast,” DeHart said. “Se-
nior year was an awesome expe-
rience.
“We had a lot of seniors on the
team so we really tried to enjoy
our last season together.”
As far as plans for summer, De-
Hart will play in summer leagues
close to home and continue to
work out, but mostly he hopes to
enjoy what could be his last sum-
mer in Medford.
“Summers going forward will
be at the collegiate summer
league in Cape Cod so definitely
want to enjoy this time with my
family and friends before head-
ing down to Louisiana,” DeHart
said.
Classes start at LSU Aug. 26
with freshman orientation begin-
ning Aug. 19.

The state Department of Edu-
cation approved the Lenape Re-
gional High School District’s
principal evaluation program,
and it is slated to save the district
$15,000, according to Heather Xe-
nakis, director of curriculum
and instruction.
Originally, the district was
going to implement an “off-the-
shelf ” program, which would
have been costly.
According to Xenakis, the dis-
trict was given the chance to sub-
mit its own evaluation practices,
which needed state approval.
The state approved the dis-
trict’s program recently, allowing
preparation for use during the
2013-2014 school year.
The state is currently over-
hauling the entire evaluation sys-
tem for teachers and administra-
tors, which will be employed in
the fall.

oes smart beget smart? What
defines the word “smart?”
And where is the cutoff be-
tween smart and not-so-smart?
The state Department of Education
is contemplating requiring prospec-
tive teachers to be smarter – or at least
to perform better in their own school-
ing – before they can receive certifica-
tion to lead a classroom in New Jersey.
And why not? Smarter, harder-work-
ing teachers should, in theory, result
in smarter, harder-working students.
It makes sense.
But will it make a difference?
Currently, the DOE requires teach-
ers to achieve a grade-point average of
2.75 in college to receive certification
to teach in the state. The department
is now considering raising that re-
quirement to a 3.0, or a B-average.
Symbolically, it is the right move. C-
students are labeled as “average.”
Don’t we want the men and women
who teach our children to be above
that level? Of course we do. Our teach-
ers should perform higher in their
own schooling than the average stu-
dent. The future of our kids’ education
is in their hands, after all.
Pennsylvania and Delaware already
require this 3.0-average standard, so
why should New Jersey be any differ-
ent?
In practice, though, how much of a
difference will 0.25 points on a GPA re-
ally make? Will the DOE really attract
smarter, harder-working teachers?
Or, conversely, will it be turning
away quality prospective teachers at a
time when it is looking for more?
It’s hard to imagine why the DOE
would spend its time debating what
seems like such a minor procedural
change, especially since it’s likely that
most New Jersey school districts al-
ready require their teaches to perform
above the average before they are
hired.
If the DOE feels upping the required
GPA would make a difference, then
make the change. But it’s not an issue
that warrants much debate. Just im-
plement the change, and move on to
bigger and more pressing matters.
Raising the bar? Just do it.
DOE should implement higher GPA standards for prospective teachers.
Your thoughts
What should the Department of
Education require of our prospective
teachers? Is a GPA minimum the right
measuring stick? Or is there something
else that would work better? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.
Students win for distracted driving campaign
For the second time in three years,
Lenape Regional High School District stu-
dents created an ambitious and innovative
distracted driving campaign and drove
home as champions from the third Annual
"U Got Brains Champion Schools Pro-
gram."
The district won a driving simulator and
a $10,000 grant, which the district will use
to help fund post graduation events at each
of the four Lenape District schools giving
students a safe place to celebrate.
According to John Donaldson, LRHSD
director of Television Services, the nine
Lenape District students who spearheaded
the Heads Up, Eyes Forward! campaign,
were elated and a bit exhausted driving
home on Friday evening, June 7.
It was the culmination of an intense
campaign of long days, evenings and week-
ends that began last summer and ended
with a "sprint" over the past five months be-
ginning in January.
“Winning the competition is very excit-
ing because it validates all of the hard work
that our students did,” said Donaldson.
"It was a great opportunity to grow as an
individual, learning communications and
public relations skills, while also helping to
get out an incredibly important message to
drivers in New Jersey and beyond," Lenape
High School senior Matt McGrorty said.
Highlights of Lenape Regional's winning
campaign included a partnership with NJ
Department of Transportation spearhead-
ed by McGrorty, whose persistence resulted
in a visit to Lenape High School from
NJDOT Executive Director of Transporta-
tion Systems Management Dennis Motiani
and the Heads Up, Eyes Forward! message
posted on 160 dynamic message signs in-
cluding the Garden State Parkway, the
Turnpike and A.C. Expressway.
"It felt good to win, not because of the
grand prize or the attention, but because all
of our hard work in the last year paid off
and that our safe driving message was
heard farther than we had anticipated,"
LHS senior Alex McKeen said.
Heads Up, Eyes Forward! hinged on an
extensive social media campaign comple-
mented by partnerships with organizations
like NJDOT, local law enforcement and area
businesses, highlighted by: The Lenape Re-
gional District was among only six
statewide to enter the competition every
year since its inception in 2011. In 2011, the
contest’s first year, the LRHSD team was
awarded one of two grand prizes for their
entry, Stay Alive! Don't Text and Drive.

Safe boating classes
begin in July
United States Coast Guard Aux-
iliary Flotilla 13-07 will again be
holding monthly safe boating
classes beginning in July.
The “About Boating Safety”
class will provide students with
the required training and testing
necessary to receive the state po-
lice boating safety certificate.
Recently, New Jersey mandated
that all boat operators must have
a boating safety certificate issued
by the state police.
“About Boating Safety” is a be-
ginner class offering eight hours
of classroom instruction and is
intended to give students the
knowledge needed to obtain a
boating safety certificate.
Upon completion of the course
and passing the test, students will
be given a temporary certificate
until an official certificate is
mailed. Many boat insurance
companies offer discounts on
boating insurance to boaters who
successfully complete this class.
The course will be offered twice
each month: Session one will be
held Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday evenings from 6:30– 9:30
p.m. during the first week of the
month and session two will be
held the third Saturday 8:30 a.m.
to 5 p.m. of each month. Classes
are normally held in the Medford
VFW located at 317 Church Road
in Medford.
Seats may be reserved by con-
tacting Robert Kanzler by email at
[email protected] or by
phone at (856) 722-9633.

Students can take instrument
lessons free for this summer
South Jersey Music Education
Partnership notified 45 Medford
elementary and middle school
students that they will be able to
take weekly beginner instrument
lessons for 10 weeks this summer
for free at the New Jersey School
of Music.
The lessons are small group
lessons on brass and woodwind
instruments and have been
awarded to everyone who applied
to study brass or woodwinds in
the Medford school district.
“Providing these scholarships
is the first step in our goal to en-
sure that young musicians are
not denied the opportunity to
study music in Medford,” said
David Bermingham, president of
SJMEP and guitarist with Med-
ford-based jazz band M-Town Jazz
Jam. “The members of M-Town
Jazz Jam came together three
years ago in the wake of the elim-
ination of the Medford elemen-
tary school band programs to give
young musicians an opportunity
to play music in a nurturing envi-
ronment.”
Funding for these scholarships
was made possible through
fundraising activities of SJMEP
as well as a generous donation
from the NJ School of Music.
M-Town Jazz Jam also con-
tributed to the fund by donating
100 percent of the profits from the
sale of their CD, “Live at Coffee
Works,” which features more
than 15 student musicians sitting
in with the Medford-based jazz
band at live concerts.
“M-town allowed me to come in
as a fifth grader, learn to impro-
vise and be on their first CD,”
said Carl Hauser, one of the stu-
dents on the CD.
“Thank goodness for M-town
Jazz Jam and the NJ School of
Music for stepping up to provide
scholarships to Medford’s ele-
mentary school children after the
fourth- and fifth-grade instru-
mental music program was abol-
ished in Medford three years
ago,” Carl’s mom and Medford
resident Jeanne Hauser said. “My
12-year-old son has benefited from
M-Town, as they invited him to
experience playing with their
group as a fifth grader. He has
grown tremendously under their
tutelage, as well as private lessons
at the NJ School of Music. Now I
can thank both M-town Jazz and
NJ School of Music again as my
11-year-old daughter was one of
the lucky recipients of a scholar-
ship.”

The township council will be
moving forward with the Burling-
ton County Municipal Park De-
velopment Grant, according to
township manager Chris Schultz.
The council approved a resolu-
tion for Bende Park and Hartford
Crossings Bike Trail, Schultz
said.
The council was hesitant about
the grant, in part due to the debt
the township has accrued over
the years.
The grant deadline was extend-
ed to June 28.
In other news:
• Council is prepared to formal-
ly introduce the smoking prohibi-
tion plans at the July 16 meeting,
according to Schultz.
Schultz did not provide further
information on the introduction.
A smoking prohibition ordi-
nance has been discussed by the
council since early May. Sur-
rounding towns, including Cher-
ry Hill and Marlton, have passed
ordinances this year banning
smoking on township property
and parks.
The council has been dis-
cussing options on the type of
prohibition that would be right
for Medford Township.
• Council pushed the discus-
sion to the July 16 meeting about
the abatement program, accord-
ing to Schultz.
“It’s significant for people who
own businesses and those who
are interested in investing in our
town,” Deputy Mayor Chris
Buoni said at the last June meet-
ing.
Main Street is deemed a reha-
bilitation zone, according to
Buoni. No new construction will
be charged taxes for five years,
which can be negotiated by coun-
cil.
The other item is tax exemp-
tion for businesses.
“We can cut their taxes pretty
substantially and really increase
economic activity downtown,”
Buoni said. “We want investors
and developers to know we’re
very much interested in their
business.”
The goal of the program is to
have business owners invest the
money into their business for fur-
ther growth and development,
Schultz has said in the past.
Council is continually working
on businesses coming into the vil-
lage.
The July 2 township council
meeting has been cancelled. The
next scheduled meeting will be
held July 16 at 7:30 at the Public
Safety Building, located at 91
Union St.

Pineland Strikers to
sponsor ‘Summer Classic’
The Pineland Striders Running
Club, in conjunction with the Pre-
cious Gems Memorial, will con-
tinue a local road racing tradition
with its “Summer Classic,” the
36th annual Independence Road
Races.
The races, which will include a
5K and 10K, will start at 8:30 a.m.
June 29 at Shawnee High School
in Medford. There will also have a
free Kids Fun Run starting at 8
a.m. The Pineland Striders start-
ed the summer race in 1978, an
event that has become of one of
the oldest and largest summer
road races in South Jersey.
In 2012, 325 runners participat-
ed in all the races. The entire com-
munity pitches in to make these
races are successful with gener-
ous cash contributions, food and
beverage donations, and raffle gift
sponsorships. Cash sponsors to
date include Harriett’s Energy So-
lutions, Pathfinders, Quantum
Coatings, Delaware Valley Urolo-
gy, the Joseph P Kennedy Founda-
tion and the Beckett Wealth Man-
agement Group. Over the years,
the Pineland Striders developed a
close bond with the Precious
Gems, a memorial group created
by the families of four local young
women who were killed by a
drunk driver in 1999. The races
benefit the Precious Gems and its
programs to raise community
awareness of drunk driving.
Last year’s proceeds helped
fund programs geared to inform-
ing local high school students
about the dangers of drunk driv-
ing. More information about the
races, including sponsors, the his-
tory of the event and how to regis-

First ‘Road Show’ public
meeting June 26
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly an-
nounced that the first public
meeting “road-show” will be held
on Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. at
the Burlington Township Munici-
pal building, 851 Old York Road.
As part of the transparency
plan that Donnelly initiated in
the beginning of the year, the
freeholder board will be taking
some of their meetings on the
road to towns in various loca-
tions around the county.
“We want to make sure that all
of our residents have the oppor-
tunity to be a part of county gov-
ernment,” Donnelly said.
“Taking meetings to different
parts of the county will give folks
an opportunity to attend meet-
ings in their home towns.”
Additional road shows are
being planned and will be an-
nounced once details are final-
ized.

PublishAmerica has an-
nounced that author Michael Ash-
bury of Medford and the book,
“Exposé of the Secret Vatican
Vault,” has received a four-star re-
view.
The review, which was penned
by PublishAmerica Executive Di-
rector Miranda Prather, illus-
trates the company’s faith in this
talented author. The review can
be found on PublishAmerica’s on-
line bookstore as well as Ama-
zon.com.
The review written by Prather
states: In a fictitious account of an
insider's look into the Vatican's
vault, Michael Ashbury explores
the hidden history of the Catholic
faith and Christianity itself in
“Expose the Secret Vatican
Vault.” Make no mistake about it,
even though this is a work of fic-
tion, it is only so because the char-
acters are not real and looking
into the inner knowledge of the
Vatican vault. Ashbury has clear-
ly studied in depth Catholic and
Christian history and progres-
sion. The author wishes to bring
to light the often unflattering
truth that remains dismissed as
blasphemy or hidden out of sight
from society. Ashbury ranges
from the actual story of writing
the Bible to the slaughtering of
those of different faiths in at-
tempt to set Christianity as the
world's faith. The ultimate lesson
readers will leave with is not one
of destroying any particular faith,
even the Catholic faith, but with a
deeper understanding that all
faiths have a basic goodness in
them that should be our focus
rather than being bent on destruc-
tion of other peoples and faiths.
It's truly an important and timely
lesson given the world's religious
climate.
Such learning is vastly pre-
ferred over rote, textbook learn-
ing because the lessons stay with
readers long after the work has
ended.
The narrator, an accomplished
priest and head of the vault, will
connect readers in an human way
to these lofty theological discus-
sions. Ashbury challenges read-
ers at every turn and encourages
them to look deeper into what
they believe. It's a book that will
stay on reader's minds long after
the last page is done.
