Township offers numerous dog-friendly areas
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Run, jump, walk and play in nu-
merous dog-friendly areas in Med-
ford Township.
According to Beth Portocalis,
Medford Township staffer, Med-
ford Park along the Rancocas
Creek is an ideal walking area.
There are no paved trails, but the
trails are naturally carved out
from people who frequent the
area.
“It’s a good place for them to get
a drink and take a walk,” Porto-
calis said. “A lot of people walk
there and fish there. Dogs can
play and get in and out of the
water, too.”
The area in Tomlinson Park,
across the street from the
Pinelands Branch Library, offers
a large, grassy area for your dog,
on its leash, close to the water.
Hartford Crossing Park, Med-
ford Leas and the Medford Canoe
trail all offer options for you and
your pup to explore and swim, if
you so choose. Not far from Med-
ford Park is the off-leash dog park
within Freedom Park. There are
bags available to clean up after
dogs, an off-leash area, an agility
area and a creek for swimming.
Currently, the park is being
managed by Freedom Barks, a
non-profit organization volunteer-
ing to clean up the off-leash area

Liberty (a white boxer) and Jinx (a pit bull boxer mix) play at Freedom Park’s off-leash area by the agility course. The park is popular all over
the Philadelphia Metro area, according to Medford Township staffer Beth Portocalis. The large park draws residents from neighboring towns,
Philadelphia and Ocean County, she said.

Keeping flowers alive
before first frost is
positive for environment
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
With fall weeks away, there is
time to let your flowers bloom a
little longer before winter-proof-
ing your garden.
According to Debbie Lux, horti-
culturalist at Medford Leas Bar-
ton Arboretum and former presi-
dent of the Pinelands Garden
Club, deadheading perennials will
increase the life of the flower.
“This time of the year, the birds
will eat the seeds. The spent
flower is something you will re-
move and make the plant stop
making the seeds you can keep it
going,” Lux said. “If you dead-
head it, it’s almost birth control in
a sense. You’re making the flower
produce more.”
Deadheading annuals, like
marigolds, make the flowers “nice
and lush until a frost,” which may
not happen until November, ac-
cording to Lux. Keeping the flow-
ers alive until the first frost is pos-
itive for the environment. With
fall come the monarch butterflies,
which will utilize the plants for
food.
“By removing the spent flow-
ers, they’ll blossom a lot longer,”
Lux said.
According to Lux, fall is the
perfect time to divide perennials
and transplant shrubs. She sug-
gests avoiding grasses because
those do better to divide and
transplant in the spring.
“In general, fall is for planting.

Care for your garden,
avoid flooding
And newly planted trees, you
should continue watering for a
good year,” Lux said.
Take care of garden, avoid
flooding
It’s no secret the Garden State
has been drowning this summer
in excessive rainfall. Removing
large amounts of mulch will
allow the water to drain better,
according to Lux.
“I think where people may be
seeing an issue, where it’s wet
now, could be an issue later on in
the winter when it’s icy and it
rains on top of that,” Lux said.
“The water doesn’t have any-
where to go. If you’re getting
water in your basement now,
think of it when it’s icy.”
Lux recommends taking care
of it now before there are too
many issues and the ground
starts to freeze. Gardeners have
the ability to create their own
mulch, Lux said.
“A lot of times, I like to use a
mulch mower, especially if you
have a bag [in your mower], you
can mulch your lawn,” said Lux,
who uses a lawnmower to cut
down her perennials and mulch
them right back into the bed. “It’s
easier cleanup instead of putting
it all out on the curb.”
Layering the mulch moderate-
ly, no more than two or three
inches thick, will be enough, Lux
said.
“If you put too much leaf of
mulch in general, you have too

F
rom Day 1 here at Elauwit, we
have yearned to expand the
sports content in the towns we
cover. The youth sports scene is one
that draws a lot of attention and inter-
est from players, parents and commu-
nity members alike, and we have al-
ways known that it was a key area of
coverage for us.
Starting with this week’s issue, we
are excited to announce that your
town’s youth sports – from Little
Leagues to youth soccer to high school
sports – will receive the extra atten-
tion they deserve. Nick Cohen, our for-
mer associate editor for the towns of
Mt. Laurel, Shamong and Tabernacle,
will take the reins as our first-ever
sports reporter, responsible for cover-
ing every one of our towns.
This week, you will see extensive
fall sports previews for each of your
town’s public high schools, including a
profile story and full season schedules
for each sport. We will have another
similar preview for the winter and
spring sports seasons in the upcoming
2013-2014 school year.
We are planning regular coverage of
high school sports throughout the sea-
sons, as well as profile stories and pho-
tos of youth sports. After all, high
school sports aren’t the only games in
town.
Finally, Nick is working on an exten-
sive, multi-part series on safety in
youth sports – how it has changed and
its effects on youth sports, from the
professional level all the way down to
the local level. We expect the series to
begin sometime this fall.
If you are a coach, parent, player or
fan who has a story idea, photo or invi-
tation to cover an event, please contact
Nick directly.
While we are greatly increasing our
focus on sports coverage, we still need
your help to keep us in tune and up to
date with all the happenings through-
out town. Please continue to send in
your photos, game roundups and story
ideas. Your help can only make our
coverage even better.
Play ball!!
Starting this week, expect a big push in sports coverage

Vacation Bible School raises more than $1K for Haiti
Inspired by a video about the ongoing
medical needs in Haiti, an energetic group
of youngsters spent their weeklong Vaca-
tion Bible School raising more than $1,100
for the cause.
The children, pre-school to sixth grade,
were attending Maranatha Christian Fel-
lowship’s “SonWest Roundup” in
Moorestown.
Through small daily donations, $1,136
was raised and has been donated to Ho-
peAlive! Clinic Ministries to provide des-
perately needed medical care and other as-
sistance to the residents of the disaster-
stricken island.
“On the first day of VBS, we showed the
children a HopeAlive! video presentation
of all the work that is going on in Haiti.
They got to see Haitian children with their
families, getting the care and provisions
that we take for granted every day, and our
kids wanted to help,” said Mary Tretina,
children’s ministry director at Maranatha
Christian Fellowship.
The children brought donations in each
day – pennies on Monday, nickels on Tues-
day, dimes on Wednesday, quarters on
Thursday, and dollar bills on Friday. At the
end of the week, the preschoolers were the
top fundraisers, with $357 collected.
Headquartered in Medford, Hope Alive!
Clinic has been ministering to the poor in
Haiti since 1998.
The main clinic in Mariani, Haiti, is just
six miles north of the 2010 earthquake’s
epicenter.
HopeAlive! founders Frank and Leslee
Jacobs, along with their board, organize
monthly mission trips to Haiti.
The missions vary, bringing volunteer-
ing health professionals and everyday folk
ready to roll up their sleeves.
“We are blessed to have these young
people join the effort to improve living con-
ditions in Haiti and to enhance the health
of Haitian children,” Leslee Jacobs said.
“Our clinics have treated about 16,000 peo-
ple this year, and this donation alone will
just about cover our medicine costs for a
month.”
Hope Alive! Clinic Ministries assist the
Haitian by providing food, medical care,
mother-infant nutritional programs, clean
water projects, dentistry and evangelism
through five clinics and three orphanages
in Haiti. All donations will be directed ex-
clusively for Haiti Relief.
No one in the U.S. collects a salary from
this ministry.
To donate and for updates, please visit

ductible check to Hope Alive! Clinic, PO
Box 964, Medford, N.J. 08055.
in Medford. According to Porto-
calis, the township is working on
an agreement with Freedom
Barks, where the organization
would voluntarily take over the
park.
“The agreement is going to
allow them to fundraise to do im-
provements at the park,” Porto-
calis said. “It’s neat the people in
the dog parks come together to
use and take care of the park.”
“We finally managed to get the
township to recognize us,” said
Jim Wert, a volunteer with Free-
dom Barks.
According to Wert, the town-
ship provided $500 to keep the
parking lot clean, the park clean,
trash removal, bridge reparation
and general upkeep. Additionally,
the benches will eventually need
to be replaced.
“The township provides the dis-
posable bags, but they load the
bag machines up. We’ll also clear
some trees out of the way,” Wert
said. “We’re going to try to get
some fundraisers eventually.”
According to Wert, Freedom
Barks is always looking for volun-
teers. The next meeting is slated
for late August.
According to Wert, anywhere
from 300-400 people visit the park
weekly, occasionally busier on the
weekends.
“It’s probably one of the nicest
parks in the state as far as dog-
friendly and clean,” Wert said.
“Most of the dogs are in control,
and people keep them in control,
as long as the people that own the
dogs take responsibility. If you
want to volunteer, we always need
a helping hand. It’s a fun place.”
According to Portocalis, dogs
are welcomed throughout the
township, but she requests own-
ers remain prudent of township-
owned fields.
“What we find is that people
will go to the park and lock up the
dogs and let them run loose on the
field. A lot of them aren’t diligent
about cleaning up the park,” Por-
tocalis said, adding dog urine
ruins the fields. “Dogs are wel-
come on leashes during games.
It’s OK for tournaments; they
can’t run on the actual playing
field.”
Portocalis urges residents to
check out Freedom Park for the
trails and off-leash area, as well.

many voles snacking on the plant
material under the plants. It will
harbor the pine vole,” Lux said.
Burrowing animals use the
mulch as warmth during the
colder months, snacking on
plants’ roots.
Avoid sick plants
According to Lux, fungi affect-
ing rose bushes can be spread to
others through trimming.
“We’re having a big issue.
There’s a disease that’s plaguing
the rose bushes. The spring is the
best time to keep the roses,” Lux
said.
“The people who have roses
know what to do. Most people
don’t do roses unless it’s a knock-
out rose.”
Herbs
Lavender, thyme and rosemary
are all hearty plans that come
back annually, Lux said.
“Cutting those specific plants
is always a great idea,” Lux said.
“They tend to get ‘woody.’”
With other herbs, the plants
are not as viable as they reach
the end of their life.
“Consider cutting them and
rooting them to plant again,” Lux
said.
“Cut back lavender or thyme
in spring and summer. Save them
so they have a replacement just
in case the plant needs to be re-
rooted.”
Other plants
According to Lux, winter pan-
sies are an option for blossoms.
“They’ll bloom through the
winter and into the spring when
people are going to plant their an-
nuals again,” Lux said.
Vegetable gardeners can plant
garlic and kale in the fall, which
will remain through the colder
months.
The Pinelands Garden Club
meets the second Monday of the
month at Medford Leas.
“Anybody is welcome to meet-
ings, and it’s not always about
gardens but about nature in gen-
eral,” Lux said.

Allstate agency owner
receives award
Allstate New Jersey Insurance
Company agency owner Michael
McDyer received the Agency
Hands in the Community Award
for his commitment to helping
others.
With this award came a $1,000
grant from The Allstate Founda-
tion for the Anna Foundation for
Inclusive Education in Medford,
where McDyer volunteers.
Allstate New Jersey agents
and employees have a proud his-
tory of putting their good hands
to work in supporting New Jer-
sey communities, promoting vol-
unteerism and providing finan-
cial resources to enable local or-
ganizations to help others.
The Agency Hands in the Com-
munity Award celebrates the
spirit of service. “Commitment
to our communities is a natural
extension of what we do every
day – protecting people and mak-
ing their lives more secure,” said
Rich Crist, president of Allstate
New Jersey Insurance Company.
“With support from The Allstate
Foundation, Michael and Anna
Foundation for Inclusive Educa-
tion are making their communi-
ties stronger.”
The Allstate Foundation
awards more than $1 million
every year to nonprofit organiza-
tions across the country in honor
of dedicated Allstate agency own-
ers who give back. To be eligible
for nomination, Allstate agency
owners must volunteer, mentor
or lead a nonprofit of their
choice.

only want to diversify their income, but who enjoy teaching,
coaching and training other people on how to run a business.
Although we are a global corporation, our
aggressive expansion is getting the attention of
people in virtually every background. We are
involved with a multi-trillion/year deregulation in
telecommunications and now, in the deregulation of
energy! We work with numerous Fortune 100
companies. In Spring 2011, we were featured on
Prime Time Television based on what we've done.
We will teach you all of the aspects of our business!
• Trainers, public speakers, coaches, sales
consultants
• Work & teach in one on one situations, small
groups, large ballroom settings, and even on
stage in front of 20,000 people
• Be your own boss
• Set your own hours
• Capitalize on three of the biggest industries in the
world: telecommunications, energy, banking
• Work from home
• Company rewards trips
• Unlimited income potential: Compensation is
performance based including weekly bonuses
and monthly residual pay
• Customize a plan that fits your desired income,
schedule, family life
