implement
new teacher
evaluation
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
The Lenape Regional High
School District will be imple-
menting a new state-mandated
teacher evaluation tool in addi-
tion to its own “homegrown”
method this school year, as was
discussed at last week’s meeting.
According to the state Depart-
ment of Education, past evalua-
tions were infrequent, ineffective
and failed to accomplish their
main goal of providing informa-
tion to help educators continu-
ously improve their practice. The
TEACHNJ Act, signed into law in
August 2012, mandated that new
evaluation systems based on mul-
tiple measures of student learn-
ing and teacher practice be im-
plemented statewide in 2013-14.
For some districts that already
have strong evaluation systems
in place, this will likely not be
that much of a change but rather
an opportunity to build on exist-
ing practices, the state’s website
said.

director of curriculum and in-

BOE discusses safety upgrades
for schools during meeting
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Teachers, faculty and students
can look forward to a safer school
year following significant up-
grades discussed at last week’s
Medford Township Board of Edu-
cation meeting.
According to Joseph Biluck,
maintenance and operations su-
pervisor, the clock, bell and
alarm systems have been upgrad-
ed at the Taunton Forge School.
The issue wasn’t simply main-
tenance-related, but safety-relat-
ed as well, according to Biluck.
“This was a project that need-
ed to be addressed,” said Joseph
Del Rossi, superintendent of
schools. “This has been a long
time coming.”
Safety has been a concern for
the district following the Sandy
Hook Elementary School tragedy
in Newtown, Conn.
The Cranberry Pines School
has had numerous issues with
people on the property after
hours, and entering the school
during the school day by people
holding doors for one another
when entering the building. It
was discussed numerous times
by the board and residents.
Surveillance systems have
been installed in numerous
schools, which can be remotely
monitored by the district. The
systems will record the entire
school day and any movements
around the buildings after hours,
Biluck said.
According to Del Rossi, the sys-
tem is imperative to curbing van-
dalism.
“The signs will be very visible
to the public that we are video-
taping,” Del Rossi said. “We’ve
had everything from people hold-
ing full picnics on the roof, to set-
ting fires. I mean it’s ridiculous
what people think they can do on
our properties after hours.”
Each time a person trespasses
on the roof, an alarm will alert
the security company, Del Rossi
said.
Other improvements around
the district include resurfacing of
the Memorial Middle School
track, which has 10 years of
wear-and-tear to it.
Additionally, multiple gym
floors have been resurfaced, in-
cluding Kirby’s Mill, which also
got new graphics on the floor, as
did the other resurfaced gyms.
Technology-related updates
were implemented district-wide
with a new telephone system.

Evaluators to spend more time
in the classrooms with teachers
struction, teachers will receive a
rating at the end of the year rang-
ing from highly effective, effec-
tive, partially effective or ineffec-
tive.
Additionally, the district will
implement its own evaluation
tool.
“We wrote our own evaluation
tool. We had it approved by our
board of education and the state
DOE. There was a request for
qualifications process, to which
we applied, and were given ap-
proval. Very few districts were
given approval to use their own
tool,” Xenakis said.
“We are proud to say that our
tool, which was developed by
teachers, administrators and dis-
trict administrators, was a col-
laborative effort that we worked
diligently on for over a year.”
Additionally, evaluators will be
spending more time in the class-
room.
“NJ Achieve recommends
three short 20-minute observa-
tions for tenured teachers or 60
minutes for the year. The LRHSD
has committed to 80 minutes dur-
ing the year as we are moving for-
ward with two full-length class-
room observations,” Xenakis
said. “We were given flexibility
for number of observations for
tenured teachers and have ex-
ceeded state requirements for ob-
servation minutes in classroom.
“We feel strongly that allowing
more time in the classroom, 40-
minute class period versus 20
minutes, will allow a more com-
plete picture of what happens in
that classroom.”
The district is on the second
step of the process, and is cur-
rently waiting for approval.
“All of our professional devel-
opment has been conducted in
house by our RBT trainers who
are tremendous resources. We
are all dedicated to the successful
implementation of our new eval-
uation tool,” Xenakis said.
In other news:
The district recently held its
new teacher orientation, accord-
ing to superintendent of schools
Carol Birnbohm.
“The process went well,” she
said.
Teachers were provided with
two days of a district presenta-
tion before spending a full day at
their “home school.”
The next board meeting is
scheduled for Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
at the District Building at 93 Wil-
low Grove Road, Shamong.

Schools’ wireless
networks upgraded
over the summer
The former system is more than
10 years old, and maintenance for
the system is no longer support-
ed. Servers, the operating system
and wireless networks were all
upgraded over the summer as
well.
Biluck has begun the process
for an Energy Savings Improve-
ment program, spearheaded by
the state Board of Public Utili-
ties. The 11-step process began by
submitting an audit on the dis-
trict’s annual energy use. Energy
consumption and costs for a year
were sent for review.
“Now that we’ve gotten past
that one, we’ll submit the energy
audit firms’ recommendations to
the BPU and they’ll authorize
one of the firms,” Biluck said.
According to Biluck, the entire
process may take a year to get to
the 10th step.
“The attractive component of
this program is that it’s budget
neutral,” Biluck said. “There are
no additional costs to the commu-
nity to do the projects.”
The next board of education
meeting is scheduled for Sept. 23
at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Middle
School.

A
s students return to school
this week (or early next), we
all get back into a daily rou-
tine. The unofficial end to summer has
passed, and with it, a return to a “nor-
mal” life – whether you were lucky
enough to have a three-month vaca-
tion or not.
Back to school signifies a new begin-
ning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Year’s. It’s a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school sig-
nifies the start of a busier time. In this
week’s paper, and in coming weeks’ pa-
pers, you’ll begin to see coverage of
the return to school – from stories
about upcoming changes in the school
district to high school sports team pre-
view stories to photos of students ar-
riving, backpacks in tow, to their first
day.
And as students prepare to embark
on a new adventure in a new school
year, we remind you that The Sun is
here to shine light on your school,
your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a
job well done when she is named to
her school’s honor roll, dean’s list or
when she receives academic recogni-
tion.
We want to print photos of Johnnie
waving goodbye to mom or dad as he
enters his new school for the first
time.
We want to announce your PTA’s
meeting dates and times, so that new
members can join and support the
school. We want to send a reporter to
cover that big game, big event or big
fundraiser for your school.
But we can’t do all this without your
help. Please reach out to us via e-mail
(our preferred contact method) or
phone anytime you have an item for
publication or an idea for us to track
down. Our contact information is to
the right.
As we said from Day 1, this is your
newspaper. And we mean it. Play a
part in making it better by keeping us
informed. Welcome back to school!

The YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties, a cause-driven
non-profit charitable organiza-
tion, will host the inaugural Pedal
With A Purpose Spinathon in
partnership with Reconstructive
Orthopedics on Saturday, Sept. 7
from 8 a.m. until noon at the Mt.
Laurel YMCA.
Proceeds from the four-hour
Spinathon will provide children
in local communities with YMCA
Youth Scholarships and access to
programs that will have a lasting
impact – helping them learn,
grow and thrive.
In addition to Reconstructive
Orthopedics, the Spinathon is
sponsored by Ivy Rehab.
“We are very excited to hold a
new fundraising event that com-
bines physical fitness while meet-
ing our mission of youth develop-
ment and social responsibility,”
said Jen Segelken, director of de-
velopment, YMCA of Burlington
and Camden counties. “Partici-
pating in youth programs at the Y
helps children develop healthy
habits they’ll carry with them
throughout their lives, such as
gaining confidence from learning
to swim or building the positive
relationships that lead to good
sportsmanship and teamwork.”
Teams may consist of up to
eight members.
The bike must be occupied for
the entire four-hour event.
Cyclists can ride in one or two
15-minute increments. After a
maximum of 30 minutes on the
bike, the teammate must switch.
The event will feature a DJ and
cycling coach to motivate cyclists
to Pedal with a Purpose.
The teams must meet the mini-
mum fundraising entry fee of
$500, in addition to a $25 team reg-
istration fee. Friends, family and
supporters can donate money to
teams directly or send a Cheer-
Gram to be announced during the
Spinathon by a DJ for $25.
Participants have three ways to
register: online, in person with
deposit and completed registra-
tion form at the Mt. Laurel YMCA
at 59 Centerton Road, Mt. Laurel,

Diane Wallace of Medford has a
bright and sunny disposition that
she hopes reflects in her watercol-
ors. Through October, the Samari-
tan Healthcare & Hospice Inpa-
tient Art Gallery will feature 20 of
her pieces in an exhibit entitled
“Nature Soothes the Soul.” A por-
tion of the art sale proceeds will
benefit Samaritan’s programs and
services.
She carefully curated a collec-
tion of pieces that mix flora,
fauna, landscape and other nature
scenes that she is excited to share
with the public and the entire
Samaritan family.
Wallace’s work is largely in-
spired by her genuine love of na-
ture and animals. She uses a wet-
into-wet watercolor style that pro-
duces spontaneous and vibrant
paintings. In 2011, she was named
as one of the top five artists in
South Jersey Magazine’s “Best of
the Best” issue.
A minimum of 15 percent of
the proceeds of exhibit sales will
benefit Samaritan patients and
families.
The public is invited to view
the exhibit from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The Samaritan Inpatient Hospice
Center Gallery is located on the
second floor of Virtua Memorial,
175 Madison Ave., Mount Holly.
