Guests turned out to taste what
Medford restaurants and busi-
nesses had to offer at the Annual
Taste of Medford at Kirby’s Mill.
This is the second year the
event was held at the historic lo-
cation, moving from Freedom
Park.
Restaurants offered food off
their menus to guests. Additional-
ly, people were able to peruse local
businesses and receive coupons
and deals.
This year, the event was held at
the end of September, rather than
the first weekend of the month.
“We moved the festival back a
few weeks. We took the opportu-
nity with not having Oktoberfest
this year to push the festival back
a little,” said Dave Vaughn, execu-
tive director of the Medford Busi-
ness Association. “We opened it
in the prime of festival season.”
The date change wasn’t the
only difference this year. The set
up of the event commingled
restaurants and vendors, instead
of having a “business only” sec-
tion, like last year. Additionally,
Woodford Cedar Wildlife Center
showed off animals and an-
swered questions.
“We decided to do a much more
blended event,” said Theresa
Freedman, president of the busi-
ness association. “It’s always a
positive event here. I think people
enjoy the blending of the food,
getting stuff from the businesses
and still having stuff for the kids
to do.”
The festival is a cooperation of
businesses, Freedman said.
In past years, organizations
have been “cross-supporting” one
another.
The historic society offered
Kirby’s Mill grounds at a lower
cost than Freedom Park, where
the event was originally held.

ShopRite of Medford, the major sponsor of a Taste of Medford, offered a spread, from chicken dishes and
salad to pumpkin coffee and matching pumpkin desserts. The event was hosted at Kirby’s Mill for a
second year in a row. RIGHT, FROM TOP: Pumpkin desserts and pumpkin mascarpone custard on vanilla
wafers were offered to guests from ShopRite. Fall colored nonpareils in milk and dark chocolate by
Reilly’s Candy were available for indulgence. Femmina Italian Grill served up pasta with zucchini. For

The following are on file with
the Medford Township Police De-
partment:
On Aug. 29 at approximately
9:45 p.m., an employee of Medford
Fuel was the victim of an armed
robbery.
The victim was approached by
a subject who pushed him against
the wall and demanded his
money.
A second male subject then ap-
proached him and pointed a black
handgun at him. The subjects fled
the area without obtaining any
money.
During the ensuing investiga-
tion, Medford Police detectives
learned that numerous other ju-
risdictions had similar incidents.
During the week of Sept. 16,
the jurisdictions having similar
incidents began forming a task
force regarding these incidents.
During the evening hours of
Sept. 21, a similar incident oc-
curred at a gas station in
Somerdale. The business owner
followed the suspect vehicle and
provided the vehicle description
and registration to police.
Mt. Laurel Police later located
the vehicle.
The investigation, which was
conducted by numerous Camden
County and Burlington County
Police agencies, resulted in the
arrest of three suspects.
On Sept. 22, the Medford Town-
ship Police charged two of the
suspects with armed robbery, ag-
gravated assault and weapons of-
fenses regarding the incident at
Medford Fuel.
Both subjects were lodged in
the Camden County Jail in lieu of
$150,000 full bail.
On Sept. 26 at 5:53 p.m., Med-
ford Township Police responded
to a residence in the 200 block of
Church Road for the report of a
burglary.
The investigation revealed that
sometime between 7:15 a.m. and
5:45 p.m., an unknown subject
kicked in the side door of the resi-
dence.
Once inside, the subject re-
moved a television, two laptop
computers and several pieces of
jewelry. This incident is under in-
vestigation by the Medford Town-
ship Police Criminal Investiga-
tions Bureau.
On Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 7:07
p.m., Medford Township Police
were called to the Medford Center
parking lot for a report of two ve-
hicle burglaries.
The investigation revealed that
unknown suspect(s) smashed the
window of two parked vehicles.
A handbag was reported stolen
from one of the vehicles.
Investigators determined the
incident took place between 6:15
p.m. and 7:05 p.m.

detectives at (609) 654-7375 or the

The Medford Sun
Township council discussed
adding provisions to the peace
and good order ordinance, which
would allow residents to press
charges against local officials and
municipal employees, at last
week’s meeting.
According to Deputy Mayor
Chris Buoni, it would regulate
contracting “indiscretions.”
The recommendation for the
provision came from the Medford
Township Professional Services
Review Task Force, of which
Buoni was a part.
“If I were to lean on an employ-
ee to hire someone, it would be in-
terference,” Buoni said. “If some-
one pressed charges, I could be
fined $2,000 and have to serve 90
days in jail.”
According to the task force’s
recommendation, this amend-
ment would create a “check and
balance” when inappropriate con-
tracting actions are uncovered,
since the enforcement of this or-
dinance would be handled at the
local level.
When the task force made its
presentation last August, there
were numerous examples of un-
explainable purchases made by
the previous township council,
including a $25,000 fire hydrant
100 yards away from a township-
approved fire hydrant. A pile of
dirt cost taxpayers $75,000, and a
pile of stones was approved for
$9,786.
Jack Hartwig, task force mem-
ber and former law enforcement
official, recommended police look
into some of the purchases made
at the time of the presentation
last year.
“It’s frustrating as a task force
to find this stuff and not be able
to press charges. We had to wait
on the county or state prosecutor
and nothing could be done,”
Buoni said.
It will work as a deterrent so
“history does not repeat itself,”
Buoni said.
“If the township had this in
place a few years ago, I guarantee
I would have pressed charges,”
Buoni said. “This will hold offi-
cials to a higher standard and
make them criminally responsi-
ble. If I were to violate the public
trust, I would be arrested and
should be arrested.”
In addition to making council
members criminally responsible,

Medford on the right path
with current council members
In watching the campaigning for Med-
ford Township Council, I find it interesting
listening to the perspectives that many of
the candidates speak about regarding our
Main Street business district. Some of
those perspectives are incorrect, probably
because some of the candidates do not have
their fingers on the pulse of this potential-
ly vibrant business district.
Bottom was definitely hit on Main Street
a year or two ago, and Main Street has been
on the upswing ever since in Medford. Peo-
ple who actually spend time on Main Street
can certainly attest to that. The vacancies
are nowhere near what they were two
years ago.
Having spent the past 10-plus years run-
ning a Main Street business, I find this to
be incredibly encouraging and know from
my interactions with our current township
council that it was not an accidental occur-
rence. It took partnering with Medford
Township to continue to make things hap-
pen in a positive way.
I wholeheartedly support Jeff Been-
stock, James “Randy” Pace and Chuck
Watson for Medford Township Council, be-
cause we need to continue to see the type of
growth and progress in Medford that our
current council has made happen since
being in office.
Julie Basello-Holt
Re-elect Beenstock, Pace
and Watson to council
We attended the recent Candidates Night
at Medford Leas for the Medford Township
Council candidates.
The performance of the three Democrat-
ic candidates was shameful.
As anyone who pays attention is aware,
Medford Township suffered a severe finan-
cial crisis several years ago. After that hap-
pened, an entirely new governing body, in-
cluding Jeff Beenstock, Randy Pace and
Chuck Watson, took office in January 2012.
Since that time, they have made decisions

ote them out office – all of
them. That seems like an ap-
propriate response to the fed-
eral government shutdown that began
the first day of October and, as of this
writing, was still in effect.
It’s pathetic. It truly is. We the peo-
ple of the United States of America
voted these people into Congress to
represent our best interests. But in the
name of their political party, and not
in the name of those who they repre-
sent, they have failed to reach agree-
ments to balance the nation’s budget
and decided to shut down.
As a result, more than 2 million fed-
eral workers will see their paychecks
delayed, and it’s possible that 800,000 of
those people might never get repaid.
That is because, of course, as is typical
with our government, the politicians
aren’t affected by their own decisions,
while those whom they represent
must bear the brunt of it all.
A government “shutdown” in reali-
ty isn’t a complete closing of doors. By
law, certain agencies must operate
with unsalaried employees. That in-
cludes agencies that deal with nation-
al security and also those that manage
benefits such as Social Security pay-
ments. So, in effect, these people are
forced to work, with no pay, just be-
cause the politicians whom they chose
to represent them are deciding to play
party politics instead of coming to an
agreement for the good of the people.
This is just one example of how the
shutdown affects these politicians’
constituents. The longer it drags on,
the worse it will get. Veterans may not
receive benefits. The Centers for Dis-
ease Control and Prevention will halt
its flu program, right as flu season be-
gins. Small business financing could
be seriously damaged. And the list
goes on.
Politicians nowadays don’t seem to
care about what’s good for the people.
They only care about their own party
line – whether it be Republican, Demo-
crat, Tea Party or otherwise. That’s
sad, and it negatively affects all of us.
So the only response we, as citizens,
can make is to vote them out of office.
Bring in new people who care about
the people they represent and not the
party to which they belong. Bring in
new people with new ideas who want
change and welcome compromise.
This partisan political culture we
live in needs to stop.
Partisan politics at its worst

that have restored integrity and
financial stability to Medford’s
government.
Listening to the Democratic
candidates, though, you would
have no idea of the circum-
stances Beenstock, Pace and Wat-
son inherited or the progress they
have made.
The Democratic mantra this
year is “restore services and cut
taxes.” Sounds good, right? But
that’s all they’re saying, and both
statements are problematic.
First, the current council has
not cut services. Our trash gets
picked up once a week. We get
bulk trash, our leaves and brush
get picked up, and the crime rate
is down 17 percent from last year.
The YMCA is now running all of
the recreation programs that the
township historically provided
without cost to the township.
The library is still in Medford,
and as a result of this council’s ef-
forts, the county is giving Med-
ford $30,000 this year to pay for ex-
penses of operating the building.
The Democratic candidates
mentioned none of this and failed
to explain what services they
would restore.
Second, it generally follows if
you are going to restore services,
then the government will need
additional money to pay for those
new services. The Democratic
candidates didn’t say a single
word about how they would pay
for these phantom services they
want to restore.
So how are they are going to
cut taxes if they don’t have the
money to pay for their new serv-
ices? The answer is simple.
They will raise taxes rather
than cut them. Beenstock, Pace
and Watson, on the other hand,
have balanced the township’s
budget on time after closing sig-
nificant deficits each of the last
two years. This year, they did it
without any increase in munici-
pal taxes.
Don’t be fooled by the mischar-
acterizations and empty promises
of the Democrats. We are on the
right path and can’t risk replac-
ing our experienced incumbents
with candidates who clearly don’t
understand how to govern. Med-
ford needs the proven leadership
of Beenstock, Pace and Watson.
Please join us in voting to re-
elect them on Nov. 5.

Medford's Maids of Cadiz are
happy to announce the release of
their first record. The five-song
EP, "Traffic," is the self-released
on the band's Bandcamp page
through a "pay what you want"
system.
"These are mostly songs we've
been playing together for the past
few years without an audience.
I'm really happy to finally give
people a chance to listen to them,"
said Justin Bennie, co-founder of
the group.
The sound of the new record
by the Maids of Cadiz has been
compared to that of Ben Folds
Five and Steely Dan.
"We all come from different
backgrounds and have different
influences that I think come to-
gether to make something inter-
esting," Bennie said.
Fellow Shawnee High School
students Bennie, Reed Boden-
stein, Garrett White, and Steve Ip-
polito founded the Maids of
Cadiz.
Ippolito left the band in 2012 to
attend school in Pittsburgh, after
which, Ian White stepped in on
lead guitar. From there, the
band's sound began to grow into
its own. In June, the band began
recording its EP using equipment
borrowed from local musician
Jackson Wolf.
"Recording and producing
everything ourselves was tough,"
Bodenstein said. “There was a lot
of learning as we went, but I real-
ly think we managed to capture
the sound we want from the
band."
The record took a month to
produce. The band is currently
looking to play more shows to
promote their release.
"At this point, playing gigs is
our top priority. We're in a good
situation, because we only have
one release out, but have a back
catalogue of many songs that
we're excited to play and develop,"
Bennie said.
"Traffic" by the Maids of Cadiz
can be found on their BandCamp
page at maidsofcadiz.bandcamp.
com, or by going to the Facebook
at facebook.com/maidsofcadiz.
It can be downloaded for free or
through donation.
For booking information, con-
tact the band through Facebook,
or email Bennie at
[email protected].

Owned and Operated From Historic Haddonfield
of the business association and
Medford Historical Society presi-
dent, stepped up to help.
“We don’t have to pay the mu-
nicipal costs, while showcasing
the historical side to the town-
ship,” Freedman said.
The efforts of collaboration are
far-reaching. The MBA is prepar-
ing the “Marketing to the Millen-
nials” event, to be held at
Shawnee High School in conjunc-
tion with the DECA club.
The MBA wanted to take the
chance to hold something differ-
ent than a festival.
“It’s nice to have something
that’s more business-oriented and
educational,” Vaughn said.
Additionally, neighboring Eve-
sham Township hosts a Harvest
Festival the first week of October,
presenting the perfect opportuni-
ty for the MBA to switch it up.
“It’s a chance for us to diversify.
Oktoberfest was something we
could change up and do some-
thing different,” Freedman said.
Michael Willmann will be the
speaker at the event, talking
about how marketing has
changed.
“Why reinvent the wheel? Why
not look at naturally occurring
partnerships that work well? This
is perfect,” Freedman said.
Freedman noted the high
school students are interested in
the MBA, and the town’s future.
“They’ll be future business
owners. They take jobs in town
and they volunteer at events,”
Freedman said. “It’s important
for them to be involved.”
The partnerships of the MBA
and various organizations help
present their businesses, Vaughn
said.
“These events help get their
name out there to residents,”
Vaughn said.
Additionally, the MBA will be
involved with the Burlington
County First program, which
supports businesses throughout
the county with gift cards to just
businesses within the county.
The MBA will be joining the
Burlington County First associa-
tion as another avenue to support
business and growth in the town-
ship.
“The MBA is getting bigger
and stronger every year,” Freed-
man said. “The organization is of-
fering more events. We have a lot
of support.”

event, visit www.medfordbusi-
ness.org.

Guests turned out to taste what Medford restaurants and businesses had to offer at
the annual Taste of Medford at Kirby’s Mill. The event hosted a children’s area, a
business expo and unlimited tastes at area restaurant tents with an entrance fee.
CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT: Ann Harriett of Trantella serves visitor Eric Taylor;
Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Center employees brought resident animals and an-
swered questions about wildlife native to South Jersey and the Pinelands in particu-
lar; Reilly’s Candy displayed coconut and buttercream chocolates for guests to try;
fall-colored-sprinkle-covered nonpareils in milk and dark chocolate by Reilly’s Candy
were available for indulgence; and a jazz band covered classics and pop hits.

Medford
council is drafting an ordinance
in which the chief financial offi-
cer would have more flexibility
when there are red flags with con-
tracts.
According to Buoni, council
will approve of the authority of
the CFO to seek third-party coun-
sel to examine the validity of a
contract.
According to the recommenda-
tion, when confronted with prob-
lematic purchasing, the CFO can
only request a legal opinion from
the township solicitor. As in the
past, the solicitor may have been
involved in contract negotiations,
decisions and contractor selec-
tion. The CFO should have the au-
thority to obtain legal opinions
on questionable transactions in-
dependent from the solicitor, who
may, as in the past, have a stake in
the outcome of the opinion.
“It would have to be done with-
in a budget and with notification
to council and the manager,”
Buoni said.
In other news:
Council will be establishing an
employee policy and procedures
handbook, Buoni said.
Any changes made to the budg-
et would have to be done during
the manager’s report at a public
meeting, according to Buoni.
“It’s the same procedure the
state uses and had asked to use as
a model from township manager
Chris Schultz,” Buoni said. “It’s a
safeguard. All capital expendi-
tures must be reported publicly
as part of the budget process.
“It will be reported what we
have now, especially with the
[newly found] $3.2 million in bond
funds. How the funds are being
spent would be reported.”
The idea “is to put more ac-
countability to where the money
is and how it’s being spent,”
Buoni said, adding residents can
legally enforce accountability.
The next township council
meeting is scheduled for Oct. 15 at
7:30 p.m. at the Public Safety
Building.
