Commercial
growth
continues
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Commercial growth is continu-
ing in the Medford Village area,
but the Medford Economic Devel-
opment Committee believes there
is still work to be done.
Mike Pagnotta, the committee
chairman for Medford’s EDC, re-
ported that businesses are contin-
uing to fill the vacancies down-
town.
Pagnotta reported that vacancy
rates have gone down throughout
the township, which is a positive
from previous years.
Revival of the Main Street area
has been on the forefront of the
EDC for quite some time. Pagnot-
ta said various new services have
moved or will be moving into the
area shortly. Some of the new
companies that have moved onto
South Main Street include Sheer
Envy Boutique and True Story
Photography.
“We’ve definitely seen the va-
cancy rates going down,” Pagnot-
ta said. “We’re trying to increase
rateables. We want to fill these va-
cancies.”

‘Quakers & Answers’
open to public
Curious about Quakers? Lots
of folks are.
Some people wonder if Quak-
ers still exist. Others envision
them as Amish. Still others may
only connect Quakers with a fa-
mous breakfast cereal, motor oil
or even a football team. No need
to wonder. Every fourth Sunday
at 11:30 a.m, Medford Quakers
offer a unique question and an-
swer session that they are calling
“Quakers & Answers.” The pub-
lic is invited to drop in and ask a
member any question.
“This is an easy way for any-
one to ask us about the faith and
practices of Friends,” Holby, a
meeting member, said. “It’s a
simple, just informal one-to-one
conversation over a cup of cof-
fee.”
The gathering follows the regu-
lar 10 a.m. worship hour to which
all are also welcome. Next year,
the meeting, an active worship-
ping community since 1759, will
celebrate the 200th anniversary of
its 1814 Meetinghouse and the
long history of the Quaker pres-
ence in Burlington County. A
Peace Camp open to area children
next summer is also in the plan-
ning stage.
The Meetinghouse is located at
14 Union St., Medford. Members
support a broad agenda of com-
munity service projects and activ-
ities. Sunday Meeting for Wor-
ship is at 10 a.m. with Sunday
School also at the same hour. For
information about the monthly
question and answer sessions,
call (215) 990-1822.
For general information, call
the meeting office on Tuesday
and Thursday between 10 a.m.
and 2 p.m.

The Sun
If there was any one thing to
take away from the Medford Pub-
lic Schools Board of Education
meeting last week, it’s that stu-
dents are very smart, according
to standardized testing scores.
A presentation by Thomas
Olson, the administrative direc-
tor of programming and plan-
ning for the district, revealed the
school district’s test scores re-
mained excellent across all
grades on the NJASK test, a state-
mandated standardized test for
grades three to eight.
“Every year it’s a nice presen-
tation to give, because our chil-
dren do very well and did very
well again this year,” Olson said.
Medford, which is considered a
DFG I school district in terms of
wealth, scored above average in
most subjects across the grade
levels when compared to other
school districts in the same
group. Some of the school dis-
tricts in the area that are in the
same group include Moorestown,
Mt. Laurel and Evesham.
The one number that seemed to
grab everyone’s attention was the
number of advanced proficient
students in math. In third grade,
about two-thirds of the students
were considered advanced profi-
cient, while in fifth grade, the
number was even larger at 72.1
percent.
Olson attributed the spike in
math scores partially to the new
math program that the district
started last year. He said it is a
more parent-friendly program
and that the teachers also spent
more time focusing on math les-
son plans, helping to enhance
those scores.
The school district also graded
well in language arts, with each
grade level having at least 86 per-
cent of kids graded as being profi-
cient or advanced proficient.
While the proficiency rate is
lower than the math one, this is
partially due to the language arts
test being harder, according to
Olson. The district still ranked
above average in DFG I and well
above the state average across all
grade levels.
Despite the high scores, the dis-
trict is still focusing on improv-
ing its already stellar numbers.
“We’ve been focusing on get-
ting more students advanced pro-
ficient in the language arts pro-
gram,” Olson said.
However, there was nothing
but good feelings from the Board
of Education, parents and teach-
ers in attendance.
“Most school districts would
love these types of scores,” Olson
said. “We should be pleased.”

Quatrro
Bassi
The Medford Arts Center pres-
ents Quatrro Bassi on Sunday,
Nov. 10
Quattro Bassi can be imagined
as an instrumental barbershop
quartet. The virtuosity of these
four players debunks any stereo-
type associated with the tuba.
The group performs a wide vari-
ety of music, from the Renais-
sance and Baroque Periods
to the Ragtime, Dixieland, and
Big Band styles of the 20th centu-
ry.
Quattro Bassi consists of four
low-brass instrumentalists: Bob
Greene and Jim Weinhouse on
euphonium and Art Leiby and
Harry Salotti on tuba.
The group has performed
for the last 15 years in the
Philadelphia and South Jersey
areas.
For the past 25 years, Salotti
has performed in the Philadel-
phia and Atlantic
City areas on the tuba and bass.
Some of his credits include: Bar-
num/Chicago; The Seacoast
Brass; and The Bay Atlantic Sym-
phony.
Leiby is a freelance trombon-
ist, bass trombonist, euphoniu-
mist and tubist in the Philadel-
phia and Atlantic City area.
Weinhouse holds a bachelor of
arts degree from West Chester
University and a master’s of
music degree in Music Composi-
tion from Temple University.
Greene is active as a
freelance trombonist, pianist
and church organist. He plays
euphonium with the Wind
Symphony of Southern New Jer-
sey.
Admission will be $10 at the
door. For further information

Medford part of county program
Pagnotta also said the town-
ship has the “pleasant problem”
of finding 1,000 square feet of re-
tail space for an interested busi-
ness, though he did not discuss
further details.
Pagnotta did credit some of the
downtown revival to the new sign
ordinance, which was passed in
the spring. He reported that
many businesses are happy the
regulations have been relaxed, al-
lowing for enhanced and more
creative signage by many compa-
nies.
“In Medford, we had incredible
setbacks where it was hard to
get signage to do anything,” he
said.
The sign ordinance was cited
by Pagnotta as a challenge where
township officials did their best
to balance the charm and
character of the township with
enhancing Medford’s commercial
sector.
“(Township officials) all want
to preserve and protect Medford,
but at the same time, create a bet-
ter commercial environment,”
Pagnotta said.
Medford is getting interest in
the purchase of one of the town-
ship’s liquor licenses. The town-
ship originally put out a liquor li-
cense to bid for $600,000 during
the summer. That price was
dropped to $500,000 later to attract
more interest.
Township Manager Chris
Schultz said the township has re-
ceived interest in that license, but
believes the Council should dis-
cuss whether to drop the mini-
mum bid on it further.
“I don’t know what the market
is willing to pay,” Schultz said.
Schultz hinted that Council
would likely discuss the liquor li-
cense at the next meeting on Nov.
12.
Another project the township
has been working on is at a bit of
a standstill. Medford’s hopes of
putting wifi in the downtown
area are still in the works, but not
totally ready to progress yet.
Pagnotta said the township
needs to get more businesses in-
terested in sponsoring the wifi to
offset the cost.
“We’re exploring all sorts of
different ways to get wifi down-
town,” he said. “We just don’t
have the density where a spon-
sored wifi would work.”
In hopes of attracting more
local customers to their business-
es, Medford is part of a new coun-
ty program called Shop Burling-
ton County First. The program is
a new initiative to get residents to
spend their money in Burlington
County businesses.
The Medford Business Associa-
tion is one of the partners that is
teaming with the county EDC.
Pagnotta hopes the county’s mes-
sage will help Medford residents
look more at buying products and
services from businesses in the
township.

O
ne year ago at this time, com-
munities throughout New Jer-
sey were in utter amazement
of the damage that Hurricane Sandy
had done. Those of us who were lucky
enough to avoid direct damage from
the “superstorm” watched the videos
of the flooding in horror.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed people’s
homes, businesses and livelihoods. It
devastated our vacation spots, our es-
capes and our state’s largest tourist
destinations. It changed the way we
think about storm preparation, and
the likelihood that we can be heavily
impacted by what was before now
thought to be only a southern prob-
lem.
Over the months that followed the
storm, New Jersey rallied together
and fought to recover. The state put to-
gether messages saying we are
“stronger than the storm.” Volunteers
from all over showed up to help with
cleanup at Shore towns.
Slowly but surely, the federal gov-
ernment made grants available to help
us recover. Insurance companies often
made the process long, arduous and at
times unfulfilling.
One year later, we are still recover-
ing. Homes are still left unrepaired,
businesses have closed their doors for
good, and lives have been changed for-
ever.
But we move on. We keep on truck-
ing, as they say.
The phrase is played out at this
point, but it really is true that we are
stronger than the storm. Sandy can’t
beat us.
The storm did remind us of how im-
portant it is to support our local com-
munities. We rushed to the Shore this
summer to vacation, and hopefully,
we’ll continue to do so next year.
Local support isn’t just seasonal,
though. In a few short weeks, you’ll
begin to see campaigns that will urge
you to spend local this holiday shop-
ping season, and it’s something that
you should definitely do.
It’s a practice you can perform all
year round by shopping, eating and
buying locally. We all benefit from the
support.
in our opinion
Lessons from Sandy
One year later, we know how important it is to support local endeavors

ObamaCare a national
embarrassment, writer says
This is a story of a shipwreck.
More to the point, I am talking about the
ObamaCare website scandal, which has
turned into a national embarrassment of
some major proportion. It takes govern-
ment to deliver such a screw up.
Had it been Amazon, Google or Face-
book, they would have been out of busi-
ness.
As you know, I'm in favor of health care
for all, but the Obama brand of national
health care is so flawed, all the way around,
that it will eventually fail. These early
stumbles pale in comparison with what lies
ahead.
Worst of all is the fact that Obama is los-
ing credibility with the American people
when it comes to his ability to make his
health care law work. And he knows it!
Leadership is all about being ahead of
the news. This president is consistently re-
sponding belatedly to news, bad news that
is! He didn't miss a heartbeat when it came
to reporting on the killing of Osama bin
Laden.
To make things worse, just like Susan
Rice lied to the American people about the
Benghazi massacre, so did Kathleen
Sibelius about the true state of the Oba-
maCare website. Or what about all the
lying that went on in the IRS scandal?
I'm sick and tired of being lied to by my
government, and I'm sure you are, too.
Governments of all colors, Democrats
and Republicans, like to present events in
the most positive light, but I've never seen
anything like this and hope I never will the
rest of my life.
When Obama appears on TV to deliver a
message, do you believe him? Most Ameri-
cans don't anymore! Why should they?
I have this to say to Mr. Obama, his ad-
ministration and his loyal followers:
The socialist paradise (read: Europe)
that Obama is trying so hard to emulate
doesn't work.
Folks, wake up. Europe is broke! So
broke that large parts of Europe will re-
quire the help of other nations (including
the United States through the IMF) to dig
out of the hole that their socialist model
got them into.
When we (read: the United States) mess
up, there is no nation big enough to bail us
out.
In Europe, a postwar culture of "spend,
tax and regulate" has finally brought the
gravy-train to a halt.
If you think 7.2 percent unemployment
is unbearable, try 25 percent and no im-
provement in sight.
Is this your vision of the America you
want to hand down to future generations?
I think not!

“The things we’ve been able to

County college president gives
‘State of the College’ address
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly praised the
value and benefits of the educa-
tional opportunities at Burling-
ton County College, affirming the
county’s and college’s commit-
ment to helping students succeed
after BCC President David C.
Hespe’s “State of the College” ad-
dress at a recent freeholders
meeting.
“Burlington County residents
deserve quality education at af-
fordable prices and Burlington
County College meets that chal-
lenge with innovative ways to en-
hance educational opportunities
while keeping costs down,” Don-
nelly said. “The college has had
several significant achievements
over the past year – the lowest tu-
ition and fees in New Jersey, the
largest graduating class in its his-
tory and excellent academic pro-
grams tailored to help students
achieve their educational and ca-
reer goals.”
Hespe briefed the freeholder
board on the “State of the Col-
lege” – highlighting recent ac-
complishments and goals:
• The lowest tuition and fees
in New Jersey for community col-
leges.
• A new first year initiative
to help beginning students suc-
ceed.
• One of the most military
friendly colleges in the nation
that offers new scholarships for
civilian spouses and in-county tu-
ition for military.
• $2.4 million worth of up-
grades funded by the state and
county that will bring cutting-
edge technology to the classroom
and state-of-the-art network serv-
ice.
“A vibrant community college
requires full support from county
leaders. Burlington County Col-
lege appreciates our collabora-
tion with Freeholder Director Joe
Donnelly and the freeholder
board that benefits our students
and communities,” Hespe said.
“We strive to add innovative pro-
gramming at low costs. I encour-
age anyone thinking about a new
career or taking a course for per-
sonal enrichment to look at all
the courses and programs we
have available.”
“Online registration for spring
2014 is open,” Hespe added.
Anyone looking to enroll for
spring 2014 can learn more at

Business association
holds marketing event
In the first of its kind for the
Medford Business Association,
Chairman and CEO Michael Will-
mann spoke to a group of local
business people on the topic of
marketing to the individuals
know as the Millennials.
The event, sponsored by the
MBA and in cooperation with the
Shawnee High School DECA club,
brought attendees a fresh ap-
proach to telling their story and
reaching their audience. Held in
the new large group instruction
room at Shawnee High School, it
featured a presentation by
Shawnee students on the DECA
Club with information about
DECA and special events they
compete in.
Willmann then spoke to the
group with the assistance of the
students. “Our job as business
people is to figure out what people
want and then provide it. We need
to stand in the shoes of those who
might seek our products and serv-
ices and see whether we offer
what they want,” Willmann
said.
The two-hour event included a
marketing perspective of, “Why
do we live in Medford?” Informa-
tion, research and analysis
showed what individuals think,
like, dislike and believe about
Medford as a destination of
choice. “The goal of this event
was to give business people one
thing that they can take back to
their businesses and utilize as a
marketing strategy,” said execu-
tive director David Vaughn. “I be-
lieve we achieved that goal.”
The Medford Business Associa-
tion is dedicated to working to
help benefit businesses in the
Medford area. For more informa-
tion about the MBA, including
membership benefits and month-
ly networking and business meet-
ings, visit www.medfordbusi-
ness.org.

County library system holding
pajama and book drive for kids
The Burlington County Li-
brary System is collecting new
pajamas and new books for chil-
dren in need, many of whom have
been abused or abandoned and
are hoping to be adopted.
The donations, which may be
dropped off at the county library
in Westampton and the branch fa-
cilities through Nov. 30, are being
accepted for the Pajama Program,
a charity that hopes to contribute
to a warmer, more loving environ-
ment for children at their most
vulnerable.
Living in group homes, shel-
ters and temporary housing,
these youngsters are often shuf-
fled from one place to another,
and many have never experi-
enced the simple comfort of hav-
ing a loving mother or father tuck
them in at bedtime.
To date, the Pajama Program
has given away more than 2 mil-
lion pajamas and books to needy
children, and library patrons are
being asked to lend their support
to this ongoing effort.
Donations of new, unused paja-
mas and new books for children
up to 18 years old are being ac-
cepted.
Please drop off all donations in
the collection boxes that have
been set up in the lobby of the
county library in Westampton
and at the branch facilities in
Bordentown, Cinnaminson, Eve-
sham, Maple Shade, Pemberton,
Medford and Riverton.
For more information about
the Pajama Program and this
worthy cause, please go to
www.PajamaProgram.org.

Drapes, wood blinds, sheers
or verticals......... It a dilemma
that makes for many calls for
HELP! Have no fear. I have got
a handful of great alterna-
tives to work with any design
style.
The first thing to consider
is the level of privacy and
light needed for the space.
This certainly will not limit
your product selection, it's
more that the architecture
could limit some choices but
not in all cases. If we are
planning a front living room
window that gets extreme sun
at some portion of the day
then you need a dual purpose
treatment. Look at Hunter
Douglas Silhouette sheer
shades. They are one of those
products that lets you have
your cake and eat it TOO.
They can be open and light fil-
tering then when needed
close them or tilt them to de-
flect the harsh sun rays.
There are many interesting
textures within the collection
from linen texture weaves to a
refined sateen cloth and col-
ors galore.
When we think about bed
or bath windows the need
change a bit. It's generally not
a space you sit during the day
so it could be light filtering
but definite need for full pri-
vacy. This can be achieved by
the product just mentioned or
may I suggest a layered plan.
That could be a fabric roman
shade finished with station-
ary panels to complete warm
yet functional window treat-
ment. For a bit of the old fash-
ioned approach but twisted
up a bit I like to layer a tra-
versing liner panel under a
sheer panel for optional light
control .This is a soft window
treatment yet can still have
an updated detail like a euro
pleat verses a traditional
pinch pleat heading.
One of up and coming
trends for window fashion in-
cluded fabric roman shades.
The Design Studio Collection
by Hunter Douglas features
cotton , silks and blended fab-
rics to compliment any decor
(even your mothers) and as
far as light and privacy op-
tions that's not limited either.
They are usually on the top of
my list for a space that cannot
be cluttered with too much
fabric yet a need for a soft
window treatment.
We have a full display of
these and other products at
the studio on Third St . Call to
set an appointment to see
them and have an interactive
computer presentation of
your windows showing vari-
ous options. It's truly amazing
and makes the visual concept
so easy !
