Special events ordinance
discussed. PAGE 2

The Thornton family took some time to roast marshmallows at Johnson’s Corner Farm last week. The farm is hosting its annual holi-
day activities through Dec. 30.

At a glance, “Pedro’s Hungry
Ride,” written by Gloria Barone
Rosanio and illustrated by her
husband, Jim, looks like a book
strictly aimed at teaching chil-
dren about healthy eating habits.
However, the book also features
lessons about how adults can pro-
vide healthy foods for their fami-
lies, even when facing tough sce-
narios.
Gloria and Jim, Medford resi-
dents, released “Pedro’s Hungry
Ride” in early October. They
teamed up to provide a child-
friendly story about healthy eat-
ing that also has a deeper lesson
about the social habits of today.
“It’s a simple book about a boy
who wants to find fruits and veg-
etables and be healthy,” Gloria
said. “For adults, the message is a
little bit deeper, where if you live
in an area without having food
readily available, what can you do
to still eat healthy?

The introduction of a draft or-
dinance to Medford Council at
last week’s meeting resulted in a
lengthy discussion as well as
some disagreement between
council members.
Township manager Chris
Schultz presented a draft that
would add a companion ordi-
nance to the township’s existing
special events ordinance.
The draft ordinance is aimed at
private special events and was
drawn up by township staff and
professionals after receiving com-
plaints from residents about
items such as noise and excessive
traffic.
Schultz cited the ABF Mud Run
that took place at Camp Ockan-
ickon in October as one of the
events that the ordinance would
help regulate. The draft ordi-
nance would not apply to town-
ship events such as the Halloween
Parade or Dickens Festival.
“They bring an influx of traffic
and can impact the community if
they’re not prepared for it,”
Schultz said.
Council had many questions
for Schultz. Some asked about pa-
rameters such as how large
events would have to be to fall
under such an ordinance. Others,
however, were concerned about
overregulation.
“I was concerned that we’re
regulating events that we don’t
want to regulate,” Councilman
Jeffrey Beenstock said.
Councilman James “Randy”
Pace was adamantly against
adding a new ordinance to regu-
late special events further.
“We’re talking about produc-
ing more regulation on the pub-
lic,” Pace said. “I think this issue
can be addressed without a new
law.”
Deputy Mayor Chris Buoni
thought otherwise, especially
after hearing township resources,
such as police, are overwhelmed
when the township has upward of
30,000 visitors coming into the
town for a single day.
“If you have 30,000 people com-
ing into an event, we have a re-
sponsibility to know about the
event,” he said.
Buoni viewed the draft ordi-
nance differently than Pace, say-
ing it wouldn’t overregulate, but
rather invite property owners to
work more closely with the town-
ship in preparing for larger
events. He stated that problems
take place when the township is
not prepared for large-scale
events because they are not prop-
erly informed.
Council ended the discussion
by saying it will look at making
changes to the draft and dis-
cussing issues further before
making any movement on the
issue.
In other news:
• After discussions of making
tweaks to the township’s sign or-
dinance last week, township plan-
ner Michelle Taylor informed
council about the sub-commit-
tee’s findings.
Taylor said there can’t be any
changes to the 30-day enforce-
ment period because the law
could then be in violation of due
process. However, the committee
did suggest that council amend
the ordinance to regulate the
brightness of electronic signs.
• Schultz updated council on
the township’s leaf pick-up dur-
ing his report and told residents
that the township could be
demonstrating a new leaf pick-up
machine called the “Predator” in
the coming weeks. The new ma-
chine can pick up leaves four
times as fast as the machines cur-
rently used by the township, ac-
cording to Schultz.
• The next council meeting will
be on Dec. 17. The meeting will
begin with an executive session at
7 p.m., with the public session to
follow.

Condone has been performing
interactive children’s' music for
preschoolers and kindergartners
since 1997. Using a keyboard as
his primary instrument, Condone
also combines percussion instru-
ments, dance, finger play, full
body movement, and call and re-
sponse into an action-packed
presentation for the younger au-
dience. He chooses material from
a broad range of sources, includ-
ing classic children’s songs, popu-
lar TV shows, rock, pop and jazz.
Kids who have never seen Con-
done instantly recognize much of
his repertoire.
In Condone’s "other life," he
plays drums and sings with
Philly-based rock n' roll band
"The Flamin' Caucasians" and is
the proud father of a guitar play-
ing/singing daughter.

Medford Township Police Department
will be cracking down on drunk drivers as
part of the annual holiday season “Drive
Sober or Get Pulled Over” statewide cam-
paign.
Through Jan. 2, police officers will con-
duct saturation patrols looking for mo-
torists who may be driving while intoxicat-
ed.
A concentrated national effort, the cam-
paign helps to raise awareness about the
dangers of drinking and driving through
high-visibility enforcement and public edu-
cation tools.
“This is a critical traffic safety program
that will help keep township roadways safe
during the holiday season,” Chief Richard
Meder said. “This initiative will educate
the motoring public as to the consequences
of choosing to drink and drive.”
Last year in New Jersey, 19 percent of all
motor vehicle fatalities were alcohol-relat-
ed. Nationally, during the combined
months of December in 2007-2011, there
were 4,169 people killed in drunk driving
crashes.
Law enforcement agencies participating
in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Holi-
day Statewide Crackdown offer the follow-
ing advice:
• Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a
sober friend to drive you home.
• Spend the night where the activity is
held.
• If you see an impaired driver on the
road, contact law enforcement. Your ac-
tions may save someone’s life, and inaction
could cost a life.
• Always buckle-up, every ride. It’s
your best defense against an impaired driv-
er.
• If you are intoxicated and traveling
on foot, the safest way to get home is to take
a cab or have a sober friend or family mem-
ber drive or escort you to your doorstep.
• Be responsible. If someone you know
is drinking, do not let that person get be-
hind the wheel.

Y
ou’ve heard it time and again
lately, but it’s worth repeating:
Shop local this holiday season!
We’re already two weeks into this
shortened holiday shopping season –
since Thanksgiving was so late this
year – but if you haven’t already fin-
ished your shopping, you should
strongly consider buying as local as
you possibly can.
Keeping your spending dollars in
your hometown, or at least in the re-
gion, has immense benefits on the
local economy.
Even companies as large as Ameri-
can Express are touting the impor-
tance of shopping local. The company
started the now well-known Small
Business Saturday – the Saturday
after Thanksgiving, the day after
Black Friday – in 2010 to promote
small businesses. Just last year, a
study reported an estimated $5.5 bil-
lion was spent at small businesses on
that day in 2012!
A vibrant and successful local busi-
ness community has a trickle-down ef-
fect on our own pockets. Just think:
• Successful local businesses make
other businesses want to locate in our
town.
• More businesses equals more rata-
bles, which, in turn, lowers our taxes.
• The more ratables we have, and the
lower our taxes are, the more attrac-
tive our community becomes to future
residents.
It all starts with you. If you have a
choice between buying a gift at a big
box store or a local mom-and-pop, sup-
port your neighbors by making that
purchase locally.
Our small businesses are already
struggling with a still-rebounding
economy and a holiday shopping sea-
son that is six days shorter than nor-
mal. Let’s all help them out by opening
their doors and opening our wallets to
them. We can make it a truly happy
holiday season.

Sherriff’s department
collecting toys
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield announced that
her department’s annual Toy
Drive is officially underway, and
that residents and businesses can
donate toys for children of fami-
lies in need numerous drop-offs
located throughout the county.
Stanfield said that the collec-
tion will continue until Dec. 20,
when officers will gather up the
bins, and return them to the
county complex. Toys will then be
safety checked by the Burlington
County Department of Consumer
Affairs. Human service agencies
will work with the sheriff to dis-
tribute the toys.
Last year, the department col-
lected approximately 1,100 toys.
The sheriff said she is optimistic
that the drive will exceed that
number this holiday season.
Drop-off locations in Medford
include Kinder Care at the inter-
section of Stokes and Skeet Road,
as well as the Medford Post Office.

The Burlington County Board
of Chosen Freeholders started its
seasonal flu and pneumonia vac-
cine clinics for adult county resi-
dents and will continue with a
total of 19 clinics countywide
through Dec. 30.
Residents with computer ac-
cess should schedule their flu
shot by visiting the health depart-
ment website, www.co.burling-
ton.nj.us/health. People can cur-
rently schedule their appoint-
ments online. Residents who have
scheduled their appointment on-
line and bring the printed and
completed consent form will be
fast tracked through the clinic.
Walk-ins will still be welcomed
but may have to wait in line.
In addition to targeting the
usual higher risk groups, such as
those aged 50 and older, people
with chronic medical conditions,
weakened immune or respiratory
systems and pregnant women, all
youths through age 23 are advised
by the Centers for Disease Con-
trol and Prevention to receive sea-
sonal flu vaccines this year to re-
duce the spread of flu in schools.
The county clinic is for adults
age 18 and older but parents can
take their children to physicians
for flu vaccines and many other
county locales will be giving the
seasonal flu vaccine, including
Southern Jersey Family Medical
Centers (www.sjfmc.org/) in
Burlington City and Pemberton.
The county health department
accepts Medicare Part “B” to
cover the cost for seasonal flu and
pneumonia vaccines. A donation
of $15 for seasonal flu vaccine and
$25 for pneumo is recommended
by those not covered by Medicare
if residents can afford it.
People who have Medicare cov-
erage and belong to a managed
care plan or HMO, should go to
their regular health care
providers to receive immuniza-
tions.

He will be inducted into the

States, only a handful can claim
this honor.
“I am extremely honored that
my couples wrote the beautiful re-
views they did, enabling other
couples to learn first-hand about
their experiences with me. I work
very hard to make sure my cou-
ples get the greatest care and at-
tention, not just beautiful photo-

about me and my staff are hum-

“Part of it is that I like the idea
of the children’s book, because
it’s a way to get a complex mes-
sage out in a simple way.”
The book revolves around a
boy named Pedro, who lives in an
urban city. Pedro, wanting to eat
fruits and vegetables, rides his
bike from school to the mayor’s
office to the grocer looking for
fruits and vegetables to eat.
Eventually, after he discovers
that he has to ride his bike to an-
other neighborhood to find these
healthy snacks, he discovers that
he can create a garden that will
grow these foods for him.
The book is not just a lesson
about eating healthy. Gloria want-
ed to make a point of how diffi-
cult it is for people residing in
inner-city “food deserts” to find
fruits and vegetables to eat.
Much of the overarching story-
line came from stories such as
former Newark Mayor Cory
Booker’s efforts to create healthi-
er eating habits in his city.
Gloria completed the story
after Gary Earl, a health ambas-
sador who rode his bike around
the United States in an awareness
program called Journey for
Health, inspired her.
At that point, she put Pedro on
a bike and had the basis of the
plot together.
“I just took all these different
pieces of information and in my
mind just formulated a story that
put the story together,” Gloria
said.
Jim did the illustrations by
hand for the book. He wanted to
create an environment that was
appealing to children, but still re-
alistic to many of the challenges
that inner city children face when
it comes to eating healthy.
“In this case, there’s no magic
wand to make everything better.
There’s no fairy to make every-
thing better; there’s a real as-
pect,” Jim said.
Jim made the focus around the
characters and the backgrounds
mostly generic, though he admit-
ted the city skyline is similar to
Philadelphia.
Gloria and Jim believe the
story has a lot of educational
value to it. The book was sent to
Booker, Philadelphia Mayor
Michael Nutter and First Lady
Michelle Obama.
The couple also created a dis-
cussion guide for teachers that
will hopefully turn the book into
something that can be used in the
classroom.
“What people seem to like is
that the book goes beyond that, to
talk about a social issue,” Gloria
said. “The adults get that message
and seem to really like it.”
“Pedro’s Hungry Ride” can be
purchased on Amazon.com.

Burlington County clerk Timo-
thy D. Tyler reported that rev-
enues generated through his of-
fice have already exceeded the
total for all of 2012, which he said,
translates into good news about
the local economy as well as for
local taxpayers.
“Increased revenue means
more funds in the county cof-
fers,” Tyler said, “and at the end
of the year, those additional dol-
lars can be parlayed into tax
savings in the county’s 2014 budg-
et.”
“Over the last six years, free-
holders have managed to survive
the recession, and a very slow re-
covery, without increasing county
property taxes,” Tyler said. “A
trending increase in clerk’s fees
will help hold the line on taxes
going forward.”
At the end of the third quarter,
the clerk had collected nearly $5.5
million in document recording
and other services’ fees or
$200,000 more than generated in
all of 2012.
“When you do the math, we are
on track to generate more than $9
million this year, or $2 million
more than 2012,” Tyler said.
“That’s serious good news for
everyone who is looking for evi-
dence that our economy is back
on track.”
Tyler noted that real estate doc-
ument recording and transfer
revenues collected by his office
are related not just to the number
of transactions, but also the value
of the properties being bought
and sold.
To view the entire revenue re-
port, go to the clerk’s webpage at
www.co.burlington.nj.us/clerk
and click on the “compilations”
link. Tyler has been posting
monthly revenue reports since
taking office in 2009 as part of the
county’s transparency pledge to
make more information more
readily available to the public.
County revenues exceed

Responding to the growing de-
mand for veterans services,
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly recently
announced that the county’s Divi-
sion of Military and Veterans’
Services has relocated to more
spacious offices at the Human
Services Facility on Woodlane
Road in Westampton.
“This is a case where the num-
bers truly tell the story,” said
Donnelly. “Our military and vet-
eran clients have tripled over the
past three years. And last year,
the office processed more than
$18 million in claims – more
than any other county in the
state.”
“With the expanded space, each
veteran service officer has a sepa-
rate office, and can offer veterans
privacy to discuss their personal
medical issues,” Donnelly added.
“We also added an office for voca-
tional rehabilitation counseling,
so our veterans no longer have
to travel to Trenton for process-
ing.”
Space is now also available for
post-traumatic stress counseling,
and a conference room is avail-
able for group sessions. The new
suite also includes individual
work stations, where veterans
can complete paperwork.
“More than 4,500 veterans visit-
ed the offices in 2012, and 2013 ap-
pears to be on another record
pace,” said Donnelly. “Relocating
and expanding the offices makes
for a better environment for vet-
erans and our staff alike.”
The new suite is located on the
third floor of the building. For
veterans with disabilities and mo-
bility challenges, the elevator is
within easy access.
Those wishing to schedule a
consultation to review eligible
benefits should call (609) 265-
5008.
