With a view to save students from the hardship of facing two entrance tests for seeking admission to professional courses, Karnataka government is considering to conduct a common examination for government, aided and private professional colleges next year. The government would hold parleys early next month with private college managements which conduct a separate Common Entrance Test (CET) under its banner Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K), Minister for Higher Education, D H Shanakara Murthy, told reporters here. The students have to attend the CET conducted by the state for admission to government and aided colleges and also that of the COMED-K, which has more professional colleges under its umbrella. The government intends to decentralise conduct of CET exam by holding it at divisonal and district headquarters, Murthy said, adding, the existing period of three months involved in conducting CET exam will be reduced to 45 days.

Quotas only in PG courses in IIMs Providing reservation without compromising on merit and quality is the tune the Oversight Committee is singing while planning the roadmap to implement 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs in elite educational institutions. The Committee is of the view that the cut-offs should not be lowered to accommodate or to fill the reserved seats. “There must be no unjustified demands to lower the admission standards in order to accommodate the enhanced intake,” says the interim report of the Oversight committee. In IIMs, quotas should be given only in the areas where there is existing reservation for SC/ST, i.e., in the two year PG Diploma and equivalent programmes. Since IIMs other programmes like Fellow Programmes, Executive Development Programmes and Faculty Development Programmes require work experience and sponsorships, the government may not like to get into complications. The report said the IIMs are already under pressure and “Quotas should be phased out.” Meanwhile, it has been decided to hike 196 seats at undergraduate level and 598 at post-graduate level in medical institutions falling under the central government’s control. In the four-year B.E./B.tech in the seven IITs it will be an increase of 1479 seats. In IIMs,

53 additional intakes approved in two years will see seats going up from 1791 to 1932 - an increase of 966. (SourceDNA India Aug.2, 2006)
