Dominating state tournament run lifts Falls to title
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls girls volleyball team won the first two games against Westosha Central in the WIAA Division I title match in Green Bay Nov. 9, and was in control with a 20-12 lead in the third game. That is when Westosha Central — which rallied to beat Menomonee Falls in a frenetic semifinal on the way to their title in 2006 — started its final rally of the contest. The Bulldogs scored three straight points. After a Menomonee Falls point, Westosha Central scored three more points and trailed 21-16. At about that time, a voice called out from the Menomonee Falls fan section. “Finish the job, Falls,” the fan said. The job was finished moments later, as Menomonee Falls — which had been among the top teams in the state for more than a decade — won its first title for girls volleyball. “We’ve been climbing for four years and we’ve finally made it,” senior setter Abby Becker said moments after Menomonee Falls finished a 25-17, 25-18, 24-16 win over Westosha Central in the title match. It is one of many firsts. It was the first trip to the state tournament final since a loss in 2000 to West Bend East. In four previous state appearances since 2006, Menomonee Falls lost once in the quarterfinal and three times in the semifinal. It is the first WIAA team tournament of any kind for Menomonee Falls High School since the school was created from the merger of North and East high schools starting with the 1984-85 school year. It was the first WIAA team title for the School District of Menomonee Falls since 1982. “I was really excited. To come out here with all of my best friends and to finally do what we wanted to do since freshman year, finally get the state title — it’s amazing,” outside hitter Simone Lee said. It was a long-awaited title, and one that came following recent disappointments. In 2011, Menomonee Falls lost in the regional final following an injury to a key player in the latter part of that season. In 2012, Menomonee Falls advanced to the state semifinal, only to run into a historymaking performance by Burlington’s Ciara Capezio, who recorded a record 37 kills in a four-set match as Burlington won the title a day later. This year was different, as Menomonee Falls was the team to beat. “We’re the first team in the history of Menomonee Falls to win state,” Maddie Micech noted right after the title win. Menomonee Falls came into the match ranked first in the state coaches poll for most of the season. Two of Menomonee Falls four losses came to East Troy, which won the Division 2 title hours before the Division I match. Lee noted that “everyone knew that Falls was the team to beat, but we came out ready to play. Willing to make mistakes, but also willing to make new plays, make better plays, and get better every single day. I know there was a

target on our back, but the added pressure was eliminated by the hard work (done) every single day.” Prior to the title match, Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns told his team the moment would also be for past teams and past players that brought the team to state. “There’s many great players that have come before them that have fallen short — it’s for them, too. We talked about that in our pregame discussions,” Bruns said. “That’s what this is all about. It’s our team, they’re wearing the jerseys those girls wore in the past, but these (players) were able to come through.” Among those in attendance at the championship match was Janelle Gabrielsen, who was part of the 2004, 2006 and 2007 teams that advanced to the state tournament. Gabrielsen later played at UW-Madison and is now the head volleyball coach at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon. “They played amazing, Simone played amazing, the seniors did a great job,” Gabrielsen said. “It was so amazing to see Falls finally get that state title, I was so excited. And the fact that they fought so hard and gave Westosha the game of their life was just awesome.” She then added: “I’m proud of Menomonee Falls right now. I think J.C. did a great job and I’m happy for him.”

North receives two awards from retired educators group
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR North Middle School received two grants from the Wisconsin Retired Educator’s Association (WREA) during the Nov. 11 School Board meeting. Two “challenge awards” worth $2,000 each were presented for two programs at North — the “Falls pride” program, which was led by Associate Principal Scott Marty, and the “Job Market Ready” initiative which was led by the counseling staff. Carol Lamp, past state president of the WREA, explained that the criteria used for the award is that the activity can be no more than two years old and has to be endorsed by the superintendent. Applications are judged based on overall impression and effectiveness, the degree to which the program has made an impact to the students, school and community; and the degree to which the program reflects creativity and originality; and the ability for which the program serves as a catalyst for continued success. The awards are presented within five WREA district areas of the state. Marcia Trentlage, president-elect of the WREA, cited submitted information which indicated that during the 2010-11 school year, behavior incidents were high, with suspension levels seven times above neighboring middle school. “Falls pride” was implemented in response. According to information presented to the WREA, North started using the Positive Behavior and Intervention (PBIS) framework to teach positive behavior to students along with creating rewards for students when they saw positive behavior occurring. To fund the rewards, the school partnered with local restaurants for fund-raiser nights. A school positive behavior T-shirt was provided to every student, with funding coming from a donation by a local orthodontist. Also, a team of teachers and administrators were trained in “restorative practice” and began implementing the practice on a small scale. By the end of the year, behavior incidents decreased and suspensions dropped by 46 percent. “The positive change in the atmosphere at North is noticeable and parents have also provided positive feedback,” Trentlage said. As part of the “Job Market Ready” initiative, the curriculum for homeroom classes was updated to include a stronger focus on college and career readiness. In sixth grade, students completed surveys on academic strengths and learning styles. By eighth grade, students are researching various career options and selecting their top three, according to Trentlage. Also, participation in job market events has expanded. While a small group of students attended a local job expo and career fair, the Job Market Ready program held its own program at the school, which featured speakers and presenter in job areas with high pay and employee need. Trentlage further stated the Job Market Ready program has changed curriculum from traditional technical education toward STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and Project Lead the Way programming. In addition, Trentlage said North staff wear college apparel every Wednesday. “It makes them aware of what they can be,” Trentlage said of the Job Market Ready initiative said. Marty and Principal Lynn Grimm received $2,000 checks for Falls Pride and Job Market Ready. Teachers that were involved in each program were invited to the board meeting. “To be honest, I could have invited all 75 of the teachers, all 125 of the staff members at North,” Grimm said. “It truly has been every single employee at North that has been part of both of these programs.” School District Superintendent Patricia Greco said that as she was joining the district three years ago, “North had great pride and also had significant data around areas for improvement. You guys have really taken the charge and changed not only the number but really the response level to students.”

Lee accepts volleyball scholarship to Penn State
Days after leading the Menomonee Falls girls volleyball team to its first state championship, Simone Lee officially signed the paperwork to play volleyball next season at Penn State. Lee signed the letter of intent to play for the Nittany Lions during an event at the Menomonee Falls High School gym Nov. 13. Lee posed for photos with her parents and teammates during the presentation. She was then part of the taping of a presentation for the “Preps Plus” television show. Afterward, Lee cited the academics at Penn State and said the volleyball program is “top notch.” “It’s nice to know that I can play volleyball at a very well respected college and also get a great education, too,” Lee said. Lee said she first started being recruited by Penn State between her freshman and sophomore years of high school. She went to the Penn State camp that summer and stayed in touch with coaches via email. She was officially offered a scholarship the next summer when she returned to the camp. “It’s such a great opportunity to go to that school,” Lee said. Lee indicated that her post college plans at this point focus on being a genetic counselor. She said the profession is growing by 30 percent from last year to this year. Lee was recruited by all the Big Ten schools and some schools from the Pac-12 and Southeastern conferences. She made visits to several Big 10 schools and a few schools in Florida. Lee will be graduating from Menomonee Falls early and will begin her studies at Penn State in January. —By Thomas J. McKillen, Managing Editor

Tip of the Week: The easiest way to remove wild animals from your home in the winter is to make sure they never get into your house in the first place. Now that the weather is cooling down, it's important to inspect the exterior of your home for holes in the siding, uncovered chimney tops, exposed dryer vents, or other spaces wild animals could wiggle through in search of warmth. Dear Dr.s Winter: Can you make my dentures non-removable? Details: I had my few remaining teeth removed and torus surgery done in Dec of 2008 and full dentures (upper and lower) put in immediately. It went well. My dentist explained that after a year of complete healing I would probably require a re-lining at a cost of $1000. I would like to explore my other options. I am tired of using adhesives 2-3 times a day. I am a 58 yr old healthy active woman. thanks Answer: Dear Danielle, you sound like an excellent candidate for "fixed teeth." When a denture needs relining it is because the gum tissues have healed and shrunken after the initial extractions. The rubbing of the denture against this tissue leads to bone loss as well. People lose bone at an alarming rate and over the first 5 years there can be a loss of 60% of the original bone height and or width. If you come in for a comprehensive examination and x-ray visit we can discuss your options, the associated costs and the time involved to help you reach your goals. Options for fixed dentistry on implants will be either a "hybrid" prosthesis-a fixed denture that is cemented or screwed into the implants or a fixed porcelain bridge on implants. In order for you to get these prostheses you would need 6-9 implants in the upper arch and 5-9 implants in the lower jaw. The number of implants depends on the quality, quantity and location of your existing bone as well as your budget. I often explain to patients that if you go with a prosthesis where only 4 implants are placed and 1 fails, you have a complete failure of the bridge. So using more supports will improve the engineering of the prosthesis and decrease the forces on each individual implant. If the implants are found to be too expensive for

the number required, then sometimes fewer implants can be placed with an interim snapon-denture, until more implants can be afforded. Special Benefit for the Senn Family at Robert s Frozen Custard!
Please come out on Monday, November 18th from 3-9 p.m. when Robert s Frozen Custard will donate a percentage of all profits to the Senn Family.
Earlier this year, Kim Senn, mother of two boys who attend Kennedy Middle School and Amy Belle School, suffered a series of strokes from an unknown cause, the most recent one leaving Kim paralyzed on her left side and confined to a wheel chair. Kim has been in and out of intensive care undergoing major surgeries and rehabilitation, but will soon be ready to come home after months in the hospital and rehabilitation facility. Neighbors of Jeff and Kim have put together a grass roots effort in order to make the Senn’s home handicap accessible. Many neighbors and local businesses are donating their skills and time. We are hoping to raise funds to offset their medical bills and the home improvement costs required so that Kim will be able to maneuver a wheel chair throughout their home. Kim has been active as a soccer coach with the Germantown Soccer Club and played soccer herself for years with the Women’s Soccer Club (WSC). Jeff has been a Cub Scout Leader for his son’s troops. They have been great citizens within the Germantown community and we’d love to be able to help out this great family. Please spread the word and join us on November 18th at Robert’s Custard: N112W16040 Mequon Road, Germantown, Wisconsin 53022 You may donate directly to the Senns that evening or by contacting Steve Hasbrook ([email protected]) 221 Scenic Ridge Ct., Colgate, WI 53017

November 10th. After posting pool play victories over the Lakeland (MI) Hawks 2-1 and Kensington Valley 7-2. Kensington Valley struck first on the power play at the 4:06 mark of the first period. Seven minutes later, Tyler Herzberg connected with Adam Butler on a nifty backhand to knot the score at 1-1. The game remained tied until 6:11 in the 3rd period when Brady MacDonald found Ethan Coughlin in the slot for a 2-1 Ice lead that they would never relinquish. Noah Grannan stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced to secure the championship for the Ice. "It was a great weekend of hockey for the boys," said 1st year head coach Al Haga. "We started out a little slow in pool play and really found a grove during the game against Omaha. The boys played hard and even when giving up the first goal in three games, they never believed they were out of anything." Other weekend highlights: Friday, November 8th, Game 1; Peyton Kesselhon and MacDonald scored to lead the Ice to a 2-1 win to open pool play versus the Lakeland (MI) Hawks. Football: Second half surge lifts Arrowhead past Germantown
and all major brands
BY TROY SPARKS CORRESPONDENT TOWN OF MERTON - This doesn't usually happen to a team like Arrowhead. The defending Division I state champions were stuck in neutral in their high-scoring offense that failed to score a touchdown in the first half but woke up in the last 24 minutes to drive their point home to visiting Germantown in a 36-3 win in the WIAA Level 3 playoffs at home, Nov. 8. What was supposed to be a cakewalk for Arrowhead ended up being a nightmare for them at that point and a triumph for a Germantown defense that held Arrowhead to only 3 points in the half. "With a team like that, you can't make mistakes," Germantown coach Jake Davis said. "Unfortunately, we made too many tonight. Our defense did a great job keeping them out of the end zone (in the first half)." Germantown won the toss, received the ball and came out of the gate running. They moved the ball on two plays for 72 yards, getting down to the Arrowhead 7 yard line. Junior quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. threw the Arrowhead secondary off guard with passes of 43 and 31 yards to senior receiver Nathan Walters and junior tight end Cole Karcz. On the next play, Lawhorn threw an interception to Arrowhead junior linebacker Andy Hessler, killing the drive and throwing away at least a field goal. Arrowhead (11-1) got its only score of the half on a 37-yard field goal by senior kicker Trevor Osling for a 3-0 lead. Germantown tried to even the score in the second quarter, but a 52-yard attempted field goal by junior Carter Schmitz was blocked. On Arrowhead's three possessions in the quarter, the Germantown defense stopped them on two fourth downs of long drives and had a threeand-out. With 1 minute 5 seconds remaining in the half, the visitors went six plays and got as far as the Arrowhead 30 before Schmitz made a 47-yard field goal as time ran out. The game was tied at 3-3. "We had some good drives," Davis said. "We really did. We just needed to finish more and that would have been the key to our success. Our kids believed that they had a chance and they were going to get this done and we were almost there." Once Arrowhead realized what hit them, their defense created points for the offense. Lawhorn threw two interceptions in the third quarter, which resulted in two Arrowhead scores. His first pick was caught by Arrowhead senior defensive back Kevin Driscoll. That turned into a 10-yard touchdown on nine plays by junior running back Cody Sellhausen with 9:00 left. The point after touchdown was blocked. On the next Germantown possession, a pass intended for senior receiver Nick Holcomb was tipped and intercepted by Arrowhead defensive back P.J. Shaw at the 1:10 mark of the third quarter. Winning the title: Falls volleyball sweeps Westosha Central
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menonomonee Falls girls volleyball team got off to a fast start against Westosha Central Nov. 9 on the way to a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs in the WIAA Division I volleyball championship at the Resch Center. Menomonee Falls defeated Westosha Central 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 to earn the school its first WIAA team championship since the current Menomonee Falls High School was created from the merger of North and East high schools in 1984. “Finally, finally, finally,” Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said afterward. Menomonee Falls has qualified for the state tournament four times since 2006, losing once in the quarterfinal and three times in the semifinal prior to this year’s championship run. “I’m speechless,” Bruns said. “I’ve gone through this moment in my mind and I know that the girls have, too. I’m just so happy for them because they worked so hard, and they deserve it so much.” Outside hitter Simone Lee later said they were determined to come home with a title. “We never had a thought in our mind we wouldn’t win this. We knew that if we played our game, no one could beat us,” Lee said. Menomonee Falls jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first game, a run which included four kills by Lee. Westosha Central gradually cut into the Menomonee Falls lead, as a kill by Ashley Jehlicka of Westosha Central made the score 21-16 in favor of Menomonee Falls. But Katherine Von Bank followed with two kills as Menomonee Falls scored five of the last six point to finish the match. “It had a little bit of a Mukwonago feel to it, the way we started playing,” Bruns said, referring to the Indians sectional final win over Mukwonago which started with an early scoring run. Bruns noted that Lee got off to a faster start than in the state semifinal win over Sun Prairie the previous evening. “Then we just kept them off balance the rest of the night,” Bruns said of Westosha Central. Westosha Central stayed close with Menomonee Falls throughout the second game, as a kill by Central’s Maria Rasch reduced the Indians lead to 14-12. But Menomonee Falls responded by scoring the next four points. Menomonee Falls gradually stretched its lead, as a kill by Angelica Labermeier gave Menomonee Falls a 23-15 lead. Central scored the next three points before Menomonee Falls closed out the game by the last two points, with the last point coming on a kill by Lee. Menomonee Falls scored the first four points of the third game but the Bulldogs stayed close in the early stages of the third game, as a Menomonee Falls block going out of bound reduced their lead to 11-8. The teams traded points before Menomonee Falls scored four points to take a 16-9 lead. Menomonee Falls then finished the game by scoring the final three points to win the title. Lee led Menomonee Falls with 21 kills while Von Bank added nine kills. Abby Becker added six kills, Labermeier recorded three kills while Erin Otzelberger and Lyndsey Bassler recorded two kills each. Becker led the team with 26 assists while Brittany Robinson recorded two aces. Afterwards, Bruns noted the key contributions from all players on the court. “Big swings from Erin (Otzberberger) in the middle, Bassler in the middle, ‘Gel” (Labermeier) got us some points as well on the right, Abby did her second ball over thing tonight, and Simone made things happen in the big time,” Bruns said. Lee noted that team remained calm under all circumstances and was able to work through situations. “This group has never worried, never wavered, they always had it under control and all the credit to the girls,” Bruns said. Von Bank added that the team was ready for the moment. “The past two nights we’ve been very composed and we wanted it so badly,” outside hitter Von Bank said.

On the verge of a championship
Falls rallies from slow start to sweep Sun Prairie in state semifinal
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Menomonee Falls girls volleyball team rallied from an eight-point deficit to win the first game against Sun Prairie at the state Division I semifinal Nov. 8, and then swept the next two games to advance to the state title game. Menomonee Falls topped the Cardinals 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 in the semifinal at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Menomonee Falls — which was ranked first in the last regular season coaches poll while Sun Prairie received an honorable mention — fell behind early in the first game as the Cardinals led 11-3 following an ace by middle hitter Molly Livingston. But the Indians answered with a 4-1 run and then tied the game at 14-14 on a kill by Katherine Von Bank. After a Livingston kill gave Sun Prairie a 15-14 lead, Menomonee Falls scored the next five points to break the game open. Afterwards, Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns noted that outside hitter Simone Lee got off to a slow start but that the rest of the team rallied. “You see how much of a team we are, how we picked up around her and got things under control,” Bruns said. "That's experience, senior leadership, not going down without a fight," He later said his team has "no fear. Not worried about anything — more cool, calm and collected than I am. I'm totally all right with that." Lee singled out her teammates for their performance in the semifinal, including the serving of Brittany Robinson, blocking from Angelica Labermeier, and Erin Otzelberger and Lyndsey Bassler on both the block and key kills. “We have so many offensive and defensive weapons it doesn’t matter who is on the court, you know that we’re going to get to job done,” Lee said. Lee added that the team forgot about the slow start and got back into rhythym for the rest of the match. Bruns noted that his team lost in the state semifinal three times since he took over as coach nine years ago. “The girls aren’t going to let it happen. As many times as it looked bleak, in a couple of matches and a couple of games we played here tonight, they weren’t going to let it happen — and I’m pretty excited about it,” Bruns said. In the second game the teams were within one point of each other until a kill by Von Bank sparked a three-point run. Menomonee Falls finished the game with a five-point run that was closed out on a kill by Lee. The Cardinals stayed close to Menomonee Falls for most of the third game but a 6-1 run gave the Indians a 19-14 lead following a block. Sun Prairie was unable to cut into the Indians lead. Menomonee Falls hadn’t played Sun Prairie this year but went up against the Cardinals in 2012. Bruns said he sought to get Sun Prairie “out of system” during the match. Lee led Menomonee Falls with 19 kills while Von Bank and Abby Becker had five kills, Erin Otzelberger had four kills, Bassler had three kills and Angelica Labermeier had two kills. Becker led Menomonee Falls with 24 assists. Bruns noted that one of the things that the coaching staff has done is to work on developing the team’s role players. Bruns noted that Otzelberger and Labermeier don’t play club volleyball. “To see what they’re doing out here, making big blocks and big kills in the state semifinal, is really pretty awesome to see,” Bruns said. Menomonee Falls advanced to the title game against Westosha Central, which beat Neenah 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15 in the other semifinal. As happy as they were with the semifinal win, Bruns noted that his team was focused on finishing the task the next day. “They know their job is not done, they didn’t come here to be happy to be here. They came here to finish this, this is all on them — this is all on them,” Bruns said. Nov. 7: The state run begins Menomonee Falls opened the tournament with a 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17 quarterfinal win over Pius XI Nov. 7. Lee led Menomonee Falls with 21 kills while Becker added 16 kills, Von Bank five kills, Labermeier and Otzelberger both added three kills while Mackenzie Robinson and Bassler added two kills each.

...Four turnovers in second half
From page 20
Ty Jager turned Germantown's second miscue into a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:42 left. Arrowhead quarterback Johnny Duranso added a 2-yard scoring run with 17 seconds left to give Arrowhead a commanding 23-3 lead. Two more turnovers in the fourth quarter doomed Germantown and ruined their hopes of a comeback. Hessler picked off his second pass from Lawhorn with 7:11 left in the game and Germantown couldn't convert on a fourth down late in the game. Jager got his second touchdown on a 45-yard run up the middle with 7:01 left and Sellhausen's 19-yard run into the end zone also gave him his second touchdown of the night with 1:33 left in regulation. In the second half, once Arrowhead got back to playing their brand of football, they poured on the points and rained on Germantown's upset bid. "We're going to watch the film and see what went wrong and we'll figure that out," Davis said. "He (Lawhorn) is a competitor. He's not a guy that's not going to get down or hang his head. He definitely doesn't go into any shell like that. He'll come out just fine next year and have a great season." Lawhorn completed 13 of 33 passes for 178 yards and six interceptions for Germantown. Senior running back Quinn Fliss had 11 rushes for 55 yards. Sellhausen ran for 81 yards on 11 carries for Arrowhead and Jager had 12 carries for 79 yards. Both scored two touchdowns. Walters caught four passes for 85 yards for Germantown and Karcz gained 52 yards on his four catches. Arrowhead had 386 yards of total offense to Germantown's 277, which finished the season at 9-3.
