Mentor Sage Monologue
When I was a kid I lived in Burma, up till I was 10 years old. I had a good childhood. I remember
when I was in first grade I didn’t want to go to school, so every time I had some excuse not to go. One day
my mom asked my fathers law club to take me to school so they tied me too rickshaw and drove me to
school, after that everything was okay. I to school up till fourth grade, but stopped because of the war. We
left, before the Japanese came over in the war. We only brought our clothes with us, we left nearly all of our
stuff, we didn’t even sell our house we just left it. I remember my sisters sewed their jewelry to the inside
of their clothes so no one could steal them. Even after dinner there was no time to wash the dishes because
the Japanese army was coming fast. We moved towards upper Burma, but later since the Japanese were
taking over all of Burma, we moved to Chittagong, which is now Bangladesh, where our original ancestry
was, and from there we went to Dhaka where we had relatives. When I was a teenager I lived with my
parents in Dhaka Bangladesh, life was nice, pleasant, happy. But, in 1947 the country divided and we
moved from Dhaka to Calcutta.
I went to college in Calcutta. And graduated from St. Xaviers with honors in physics. After I
graduated I went to the science college, Calcutta University. That’s where I first got my masters in physics
then I did my Phd and Bose. College was hard, I had to work hard, but I had fun too. I partied and
sometimes I skipped class. I had somebody respond for my name when role was called. I worked on my
thesis in lab; it was on thermal luminescence. I made alcohol in the lab with my friends, it was not legal, oh
well… At the time I worried about choosing a career, what to do with my life was the most stressful
problem. Hahaha, I was also worried about getting caught brewing the alcohol because they would throw
me out of school, but I never got caught.
Based on the work I did in college I was offered jobs in the United States. I didn’t have the money
to come to America, so I borrowed a lot, but I was able to repay it within a year of arriving. I achieved my
dreams because I became a scientist and came to America. When I first came to America, well I wasn’t
married then. I went back and got married in 1961, to Gita. I was 27 years old. She was cute that’s why I
liked her. She thought I was cute too; well, actually, I don’t know , she never told me about that. She
wanted to come to the US so I brought her with me. We thought the US was a nice place, had lots of
opportunities. Life was much easier. Sometimes we went back to visit India and Bangladesh. I brought her
to the US in 1961 and we moved to Illinois.
I started a family in America, I have a son and two daughters, they all graduated from college and
they are now happily married. I also have four grandkids; I have my favorite granddaughter, but then again
she’s my only granddaughter, so she’s my least favorite too. My eldest daughter used to live overseas for a
while. The first time I saw my granddaughter was in Katmandu Nepal, she was only a few months old, now
she’s interviewing me. My son lives in England with his family, and my other daughter lives in NJ, she
visits.
My current dream is to be healthy and take care of myself, I’m scared that I’ll not be able to care
for myself, and that those will be my last days. I also hope to make a lot of money in the stock market.

When I don’t do my laps I get in trouble with Kalina and Shai, so I would like to do my laps. I want to
reach my goal of steps everyday so Kalina and Shai won’t yell at me. I watch Bengali movies on my iPad
and computer; I cook, look at the stock market, make investments, and watch sports games.
That’s it that’s my life story, hahaha. My life is only 1164 words.
