THE SPECIAL TRIANGLE METHOD FOR SELECTION OF SIMILIMUM
HOMOEOPATHIC PRESCRIPTION MADE EASY.

INTRODUCTION
For about 200 years ago Master Hahnemann put forward system of homoeopathy
with a vision to save the forth coming generation from the harmful effects of unscientific
medication. He was an allopathic physician, but he disagreed to the methods of treatment
prevailing at that time and engaged himself in translation works. He became a doctor
by his strong wish, but he was such a kind of person who was never ready to compromise
with his ideas and so he skipped the profession and engaged in translation works.
He had to look after his large family and the income from translation was very
small and he had more enemies than friends, but even then he doesn’t give up his
attitude. All homoeopathic physicians bows their head before him for the attitude he
had taken at that time, which eventually lead to the discovery of HOMOEOPATHYTHE RATIONAL ART OF HEALING.
So first duty of a Homoeopathic physician should be to show justice to Dr. Samuel
Hahnemann, by working the way he had shown to us. He has given us freedom from
conventional methods of treatment and has given us a completely independent platform
to work. Nobody can question us, as Homoeopathy ever since its date of origin shows
miracles day by day. Modern medicine goes on inventing the minute cause of disease
(prima causa morbi) even now and they haven’t succeeded.

The

Every day new diagnostic terms coming to the medicinal world. Here it lies the
foreseeing of Dr. Hahnemann. in his literatures he told conventional medicine gives
importance to empty speculations than to individuals. They believe in studying an
individual than to treat him. Against that attitude Hahnemann fought and he made
Homoeopathy free from the bad side of allopathy. So to be sincere in our treatment and
approach we have to develop a thought which makes us HOMOEOPATHS.
§3
If the physician clearly perceives what is to be cured in diseases, that is to
say, in every individual case of disease (knowledge of disease, indication), if he clearly
perceives what is curative in medicines, that is to say, in each individual medicine
(knowledge of medical powers), and if he knows how to adapt, according to clearly
defined principles, what is curative in medicines to what he has discovered to be
undoubtedly morbid in the patient, so that the recovery must ensue - to adapt it, as
well in respect to the suitability of the medicine most appropriate according to its
mode of action to the case before him (choice of the remedy, the medicine indicated),
as also in respect to the exact mode of preparation and quantity of it required (proper
dose), and the proper period for repeating the dose; - if, finally, he knows the obstacles
to recovery in each case and is aware how to remove them, so that the restoration
may be permanent, then he understands how to treat judiciously and rationally, and he
is a true practitioner of the healing art.
§4
He is likewise a preserver of health if he knows the things that derange
health and cause disease, and how to remove them from persons in health.

From the beginning of his practise of Homoeopathy his main aim was
1. To find out a medicine producing similar sufferings
2. To administer them without adverse effects.
But after facing many failures in cases which he treated especially the chronic diseases
he became despondent. He revised the laws he had made and the method he followed,
but he cant find none. Then he come to an idea of OBSTACLES TO CURE IN CHRONIC
DISEASES. Thus he find out MIASMS.
Many homoeopathic doctors tell miasms are not a matter to study with as it is very
confusing. Some tell that in Homoeopathy symptoms are important and a medicine
covering almost symptoms will cover miasm also. Likewise many comments can be
heard if we ask a question of miasm in a Homoeopathic congress.
But if there is no need of miasms in treatment, then why Hahnemann faced difficulty
in curing chronic diseases. If he was successful in treating them the THEORY OF MIASM
won’t come up.
A miasm is nothing but the fundamental cause of disease.
§5
Useful to the physician in assisting him to cure are the particulars of the most probable
exciting cause of the acute disease, as also the most significant points in the whole history
of the chronic disease, to enable him to discover its fundamental cause, which is generally
due to a chronic miasm. In these investigations, the ascertainable physical constitution of
the patient (especially when the disease is chronic), his moral and intellectual character,

The

Of

6

his occupation, mode of living and habits, his social and domestic relations, his age, sexual
function, etc., are to be taken into consideration
So concerning the fellow homoeopaths which are more important – LAW OF SIMILARS
or LAW OF CHRONIC DISEASES.
So better to practise using the both but not contraindicating. In this triangle method of
finding the similimum one can be extra confident about his prescription as here the factors
deciding miasms and the symptoms produced by the disease is combined so that the
prescription can never go wrong.
This thought lead to the discovery of easiest and comprehend way of prescribing, which
we all are doing under simple heads.
This method is easy to handle, easy to understand and easy to practise. Following this
method enhances our knowledge and potential.
Prescribing won’t be a nightmare again.

ATTITUDE OF TRIANGLE THEORY
Developing an attitude is most important. In TRIANGLE theory you have to observe
the points which makes a prescription to occur. If you get a symptom but if it gives only
a set of rare remedies or no remedies or large list they are useless. Collect set of symptoms
which makes the case simple.
In homoeopathy THE PHYSICIAN is most important, so he has to be much careful in
dealing with the case.

TEMPERAMENTS- EXPLAINED
In the old Pythagorean works the entire universe is said to be revolving around a
universal center of etheric fiery pneuma (The old Greek word pneuma and the Sanskrit
word prana have similar roots). Due to the complimentary actions of attraction and aversion
different concentrations of this primordial pneuma produced heat (fire), gases (air), fluids
(water) and solids (earth), which are called the four root elements. It is a mixture of these
elements that produced the galaxies, solar systems, planets and moons as well as all life on
Earth Mother Gaia.
In the human organism the fire and air make up what the ancient Greeks called the vital
force (pneuma zotikon). Due to the innate heat of the fire element stored in the heart, the
outer air is drawn deeply into the lungs to cool the body. These complimentary opposites
produce the energy cycle of the vital force that is circulated through the arteries (fire) and
the nervous system (air). The water and earth element make up the natural force (pneuma
physikon) which rules from its seat in the liver, the transformation of food (earth) and
drink (water).
The combination of the vital force and the natural force distills the essences of the four
elements which become the four humours of the body, the bile (earth), phlegm (water),
blood (fire) and atrabile (air). The essence which is left over is distilled into the psychic
force (pneuma psychikon) which is stored in the pineal gland and nourishes the spirit
(Anima). The bilious humour is made up predominately of the dry earthy element but has
a secondary part of fiery heat. The phlegmatic humour is made up predominately of the
moist water element but has a secondary part of cool air. The hot sanguine blood humour
is made up predominately of the fire element but has a secondary part of moist water. The

The

atrabilious humour is made up predominately of the cold air element but has a secondary
part of the dry earth element.
Each innate constitution has a different mixture of the four elements and four humours.
When there is a predominance of the bilious humour this makes the dry and hot choleric
temperament. A predominance of the phlegmatic humour makes the moist and cold
phlegmatic temperament. A predominance of the sanguine blood humor makes the hot and
moist sanguine temperament. A predominance of the atrabile makes the cold and dry
melancholic temperament. Each of these four temperaments is associated with its own
sphere of influence in the constitution. The choleric temperament is associated with the
liver, gall bladder, digestive and eliminative systems; the phlegmatic temperament is
associated with the brain fluids, lymph and genito-urinary system; the sanguine temperament
relates to the heart, blood and arteries; and the melancholic temperament is associated with
the nerves, lungs and spleen. This is why the choleric type is sometimes called the liver or
gastric type; the phlegmatic is called the lymphatic or venous type; the sanguine is called
the heart or blood type; and the melancholic is called the nervous or lung type.
Each of the four types are associated with certain emotions and body types. The choleric
temperament (earth) usually has a warm, dry, rectangular or square body, tight connective
tissue, yellowish complexion, and are practical and rational, yet prone to anger, irritability,
and impatience. The phlegmatic temperament (water) usually has chilly, watery, round or
oval body with a white complexion, lax soft tissue, and are sympathetic and sensitive, yet
prone to fearfulness, tearfulness, and sadness. The sanguine temperament (fire) usually has

The

Method

Of

13

a hot, moist, triangular or barrel chested body, muscular or fleshy tissue, a red complexion,
and are optimistic and joyful, yet prone to pride, passion, and cruelty. The nervous
melancholic temperament (air) usually has a cool, dry, thin, body with pipe stem bones,
little flesh, a gray, ashy complexion, and are intelligent and sophisticated, yet prone to
be pensiveness, restlessness or depression.
PHLEGMATIC TEMPERAMENT HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES

The phlegmatic temperament, from a psychological standpoint, is the pillar of society
or one who preserves the ideals and normality. They are loyal to friends and family to a
fault. They are not as concerned about how life outside their head operates but what is
going on inside their head. They seem to be non-responsive to the outside world and
slower than the other temperaments. The reason is that they are just looking inside
themselves. The phlegmatic hates to change routine preferring to keep life on a predictable
track. When pushed beyond their limits (past their comfort zone) the phlegmatic person
can be stubborn and rebellious in a quiet way.
Calcarea Carb is the archetypal phlegmatic who is very responsible and wants
security. They are hard workers and may take on responsibilities which overwhelm
them to the point of collapse. This may translate to anxiety and fears about finances and
work, and fears of rodents, spiders, insects, the dark, diseases, poverty or heights. The
calc carb person avoids conflict and violence. They are independent because they like

to finish their work in a systematic way, if they started the project. The calc carb person is
recognized by an obese flabby body with weak ankles, and fears.
Lycopodium has a thinner build than calc carb but has poor muscle tone (flabby). Poor
self esteem is an issue as this person is proper in public settings and never wants to be
embarrassed, yet is a bully in private. This often causes them to compensate by bragging
about real or imaginary feats. Their fears are of people, embarrassment, health, or being
alone at night. They lack self control with sweets or sexual liaisons to satisfy their need for
love. Paradoxically, they may experience impotence. There is also fear of committing to
long-term relationships. The Lycopodium person is recognized by digestive problems such
as gas and bloating, and weakness or tiredness from 4pm to 8 pm. They don’t like company
but dread being alone.
Carbo veg is phlegmatic because they are tired, exhausted, weak and cold as a result of
some previous debilitating disease condition. Emotionally this makes them very apathetic
about people and things, which is understandable because their physical body doesn’t want
to support them. Due to physical exhaustion they may be negative, irritable (especially around
family), and use harsh or cutting remarks. Memory and concentration become difficult. The
carbo veg person is recognized when a person has digestive upsets with gas and a noisy
stomach; they fanning themselves for more air flow, must sit up to sleep, and tend to have a
cold tip of the nose. This remedy is also used for trapped gas after surgeries and even cardio
collapse or other heart disease symptoms.

Dulcamara can be confused with calc carb as they are obese, chilly and have a pale
face and red cheeks. They are affected by cold, wet conditions. The dulcamara person is
very up tight and picks at their clothes, are quarrelsome and concerned about family
members, with their own, taking time to discuss family controversies. The dulcamara
person is recognized by their physical problems (arthritis or respiratory problems) associated
with cold damp weather.
Antimonium tart is the person affected by heat, touch and even being looked at (in
children). The adult is romantic and dreamy, but may be morose (sad, negative); can be
obese. The antimonium tart person is most recognized by rattling of mucus in the chest
from respiratory and digestive problems with a white coated tongue.
Capsicum is also mistaken for calcarea carb with obesity. Emotionally they dwell in
the past and are nostalgic and homesick. This can lead to suicidal thoughts. This can be
accompanied with slow thinking and homesickness leading to alcohol abuse to alleviate
their suffering. The capsicum person is most recognized by acne rosacea (redness on the
nose and cheeks) and cravings for stimulants and spicy foods.
Digitalis is seen with a weakness and sluggishness of the lymphatics, often seen in
the elderly or women who suffer from heart palpitations after a love loss. This is a strong
heart remedy. Digitalis people are recognized by heart palpitations from a slow heart rate
(bradycardia). Emotionally they suffer from guilt feelings or fear of heart problems.

Sanguine Temperament Homeopathic Remedies
Sanguine temperament is the life of the party, enjoying life to the fullest. Whatever is
glitter and shiny attracts them. Material things are what brings the good life, thus they tend
to go out on a limb to get them. Popular people fascinate them. This may lead them to
superficial relationships which, if sexual, are intense but brief. At another level it is about
excitement and variety; they’re all about being in the moment.
Hyoscyamus has in obesity and weak connective tissue (is flabby). They’re nervous
and irritable, looking for excitement. They tell dirty jokes but for the shock value. This is
the classic homeopathic remedy for those who expose their genitals to others for the pleasure
of seeing the other person react; they are the person who dances naked on a table at the
party. This behavior may escalate to violence toward self (mutilation) or others (strikes or
spits) or other criminal violence; this spectrum can range from odd behaviors and gestures
to criminal behavior to mental illness. The Hyoscyamus person is recognized by their
talkativeness, jealousy, suspicion, provocative dressing, crude jokes, and exhibitionism. In
children there are silly annoying and sexual behaviors.
Lachesis can look like Hyoscyamus but more toned down sexually (not the
exhibitionist). It is seen in the manic depressive or is now known as bipolar. Doctor Degroote
describes 3 kinds: (1) extroverted, haughty, makes you feel inferior, wants to be admired,
garish dresser, big talker that rushes words, is loud, slightly foams at the mouth and licks

Of

upper lip, thoughts are random and rapidly changing; (2) intense, uses few words but has
constricting or suffocating feeling in her presence, can throw out caustic remarks; (3)
conservative introverted, sensitive, doesn’t let out emotions and doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
Lachesis when more balanced can be fun and sexy. The Lachesis person is recognized by
not wanting anything tight around the neck, jealousy, random talkativeness, high sex drive,
and fear of snakes.
Phosphorus has a lack of boundaries as their own boundaries are often violated. They
can be fun, warm and are at ease in groups of people. Their sensitivity can run the spectrum
of knowing intuitively what is going on to being psychic and seeing spirits. The phosphorus
person is influenced by others and suffers from being an empathic who can actually feel
the physical and emotional pain of others. In a healthy state they will recognize others’
problems but not be overcome by them. The phosphorus person is recognized by having
frequent nose bleeds, being afraid of the dark, has respiratory issues or mental health
problems.

Choleric Temperament Homeopathic Remedies
The choleric temperament is hot and fiery, always on the go, and wants a project of
some sort to achieve. They’re quick to understand and apply themselves to a project or a
personal goal; they are the achievers and tend to emerge as the leader of a group, club or

The

Method

Of

organization. The choleric person is given to logic and to what makes sense to their left
brain.
Nux vomica is the leader, pushing others by their indomitable character. This is
driven with stimulants such as coffee, alcohol, and other caffeine products. They play
hard and work hard, just don’t get in their way. Nux vomica people tend to roll over
everyone unless confronted and explained their reasons in logic they can understand.
They keep long hours and use the stimulants to keep going. This can lead to liver problems
and even disease. It first
starts out as digestive upsets and heartburn then irritability, grumpiness, passive aggressive
behavior, and anger or even rage. The nux vomica person is recognized by complaints
that food sits in the stomach like a rock, has anger, rage, or alcoholism.
Arsenicum album is the perfectionist. Early in life their delusion was to overdo, over
clean and over organize. This behavior was reinforced by praise from parents that their
child was growing up to be a good citizen. These people can have multiple jobs or
responsibilities which may lead to collapse or chronic fatigue syndrome. The Arsenicum
person is recognized by being so tidy, you could eat off their floor, too high of expectations
of other people including family members, and physical conditions where the pain is
burning but is relieved by heat.
Chamomilla is regularly used for the inconsolable child who screams, refusing everything
they ask for, and are only consoled by being carried. Adults are similar and are overly
sensitive to pain, becoming irritable and angry (things must be done to the “letter of the

1. SELECTION OF MEDICINE – WHICH KINGDOM
The ANIMAL KINGDOM is all about survival. Animals are either killing
or being killed. It is the threat of being hurt or the hurting of another that is the
root basis for most animal behaviours. When a person speaks their story and they
need an animal remedy, they will often speak to the energy of the animal and its
natural behaviours. They will tell of particular stories that correlate to themes
that the animal naturally expresses. We have remedies from mammals, reptiles,
insects, birds and creatures from the sea. Each has its own story to tell. But
something that is common to all of them is comparison to another and competition
with a struggle for survival. If you find this theme in any of your cases, you
should really consider the animal remedies.
The PLANT KINGDOM is about sensitivity. This can be expressed in many
ways; lack of sensitivity or expression, overreaction, hypersensitivity or reactivity.
Plants cannot move so their experience is one of being sensitive to their external
environment. Because of this, they need to adapt ways to survive. Considering the
natural history or botanical information about plants helps us understand their ways
of adapting. As an example, plants that thrive in the desert have the ability to hold
water. In the absence of water they shrivel and contract. In the presence of water they
expand. This would lead to the sensation of expansion or contraction. I have found
that Vermuellen’s Prisma Materia Medica has excellent information about natural
history and has been very helpful in learning about the substance of the remedy.
MINERALS are dictated by physics and chemistry and are defined by the period
table of elements. All minerals are made up of one or a combination of the elements.
As a consequence the mineral kingdom is about structure. Either the creation of
structure or the loss of structure. So a person needing a mineral remedy will tell a
story of their dis-ease in relation to the structure in their life and the need to create it,
maintain it or about it’s loss. This often appears within relationships, either familial,

The

Method

Of

27

intimate or occupationally. It can be at the level of personal, familial, community or
in a bigger world view. The periodic table is a map of all of the elements. It is the
relationship of all of these elements that make up the physical structure of all things
on earth. It is also about the beginning to end of time and physical matter. It also
correlates to the structure of our life from beginning to end. By understanding the
rows of the table and the different positions across the rows we can understand the
themes and individual placements of each element and how that is representative
of the human life condition. Jan Scholten’s book Homeopathy and the Elements are
an excellent work in regards to understanding the mineral kingdom.
Each of the kingdoms has its own story to tell just as each person has their own
story to tell. By understanding the kingdoms better we can understand Materia Medica
better and be better prescribers. There is order in the physical universe. It has been
described in many ways in each of the kingdoms. The beauty of homeopathy is that
we can use this order and extract the vital energetic essence of many different
substances to inspire healing when they are of a similar essence. Understanding each
kingdom will help to narrow our focus on remedies in a fairly quick way when we
truly understand what is asking to be healed in the individual.
