Get your voice heard…

Students’ Union
A democratic organisation, London Met Students’
Union voices the views and concerns of our
students on a range of issues relating to the
University and the wider community. Each and every
student has the opportunity to stand and be elected,
so if you’re keen to gain experience of working for
a large and influential organisation, or would like to
help make key decisions about the University, joining
the Union is a great way to do so. The SU is also the
place to go for student societies, social events and
independent advice.
StARs
Our Student Academic Representatives (StARs) help
to make a difference to the lives of our students by
raising issues around specific course-related areas
such as tutor feedback or library resources. Each
course is represented by its own StAR and each
StAR is elected by their fellow students. Gathering
the views of their classmates and presenting them
to the course team and the University, our reps have
the opportunity to work closely with staff, University
management, the NUS and the Students’ Union.
Student magazine and radio station
Verve Magazine and Verve Radio form London
Met’s very own media hub. Tune in online to listen
to the Sesay and Scherr show or pick up a copy
of Verve Magazine to find out the latest news and
reviews. Staffed by students, both teams are always
on the lookout for new talent. Get involved by
offering your services as a journalist, graphic
designer, DJ, researcher or technical assistant.

‘ Since being at
London Met I’ve
been president of
the LGBT Society.
I have also been
the student
representative on
the University’s
disability focus
group; working to
make the University
more accessible…I
dream of starting a
charity supporting
disabled 18-to 40year-old people
to open up their
world beyond what
society dictates is

University has

‘ Make friends, enjoy
London, get stuck in with
what’s happening around
you and don’t waste
opportunities. ’

> 14

Ellie de Rose, entertainment
editor at Verve Magazine,
BA Creative Writing and
Journalism student, and peer
mentor.
What do you enjoy about working at Verve?
It’s an open platform for any student to write about
what really interests them, and that kind of freedom
is such a great opportunity...it’s student led and it’s
made for students, so working on Verve creates a
brilliant sense of community between everyone.
Why did you want to work at the magazine?
I was really up for getting involved and making the
most of what was happening with the University.
Plus it was a guaranteed way to get published,
which is great for the CV and immediately gives you
an advantage in a job application scenario.
What kind of career path are you hoping to
follow after graduation?
I have a lot of ideas and I don’t know which to
chase first... I love journalism and I love writing
fiction so my aim is to pursue both, perhaps on
a freelance basis. Otherwise, in terms of full time
work, I’d want to be somewhere like the Press
Association and work in features, or else approach
literary agents and publishing companies.
Top tips for new students?
Time is going to fly while you’re at university, so
enjoy it... make friends, enjoy London, get stuck in
with what’s happening around you and don’t waste
opportunities. You’ll get out of it as much as you put
into it.
Best bits about London Met?
My teachers are amazing (and I don’t mind if they find
out by reading this) and they’ve always encouraged
me. Their passion is infectious and they’ve helped fuel
the fire for doing what I really love.

> 15

Explore your passions...

Student societies
Japan Society, LGBT, Politics Exposed, Psychology
Society, Socialist Worker Society, Females in Finance,
Fitness Society – there’s a whole range of societies
on offer at London Met, but if none of these catch
your eye, it’s always possible to set up your own.
Campaigning
University is one of the best places to rally together
and fight for a cause you believe in, whether it’s
an issue concerning welfare, health or tuition fees.
If there’s something you feel strongly about, the
Students’ Union can act as a pressure group to
campaign for awareness and change.

‘ I got started with Verve
Radio to get some
experience since I’m
aiming to be working at
Radio 1 within five years.
It’s great, because not only
have I met fantastic people,
I get to muck about with
them live on air. It’s a good
laugh as well as useful
experience for the future’
Iain Scherr, head producer at London Met’s student
radio station, Verve, and BA Mass Communications
and Media Studies student

‘ It’s hard to find time to

and sport but at
London Met they
offer that balance. ’

> 18

Victor Ben Salem (BA Sports
Therapy) and Nathan Hylton
(BA Marketing and Sports
Management), members of
‘London Mets’ basketball
team.
What do you enjoy about playing basketball at
London Met?
Victor: The facilities are good; there’s always space
for athletes to practise.
Nathan: I enjoy training for competitions because
not only are you keeping fit but it provides you with
a mind-set which helps when you study and in life
in general.
What’s good about doing sport at London Met?
Nathan: It’s not just about fun but other factors
like a break from studying…It’s hard to find time to
balance both studying and sport but at London Met
they offer that balance.
Victor: Brings on more responsibilities, it’s also
good fun.
Best bits about London Met?
Nathan: The different cultures at London Met make
the study experience that much better because it
represents what London is about.

Proud to be London Met

Student ambassadors
Student ambassadors play an important role in helping
to promote life at London Met. As well as helping at
our open days and HE Fairs, as an ambassador you
could be visiting local schools and colleges to raise
the aspirations of students from under-represented
backgrounds by talking about your university
experience, or actively assisting them through longterm interventions such as the Peer Mentoring project,
partnership school activities and the Upward Bound
Programme. What’s more, our ambassador positions
are paid and look fantastic on your CV.
Sports
Joining the rugby team or taking up Aikido isn’t just
about getting fit; it’s also a great way to have fun,
make new friends and gain excellent teamwork skills.
Cheerleading, football, basketball, squash,
cricket, tennis and hockey are just a few of the
sports in which you can participate.
Our rugby team regularly represents London Met
in the British Universities College Sports (BUCS)
championships and is proud to have recently
won the 4B South East League Division. Our
cheerleaders, the LMU Mets, have also met with
success, winning first place at Future Cheer’s
regional competition, ‘Winter Wonderland’.
We also run a number of fitness classes including
Parkour, Zumba, Pilates, Judo and Boxfit. Our
facilities are excellent and include: gyms at both
hubs with state-of-the-art cardio vascular
equipment; a full-sized basketball court
complete with scoreboard; dance studio; and
fitness studio.

‘ The Union needs a
leadership that is
focused and that has
direction, someone
that...will stand his/her
ground to fight for the
right of the students ’

> 22

Ayoola Onifade, Students’
Union president and BSc
Biomedical Science student.
Why did you want to be president of the SU?
I decided to compete for the presidency because
I wanted to represent the interests of my fellow
students. Knowing that there are a lot of cuts
and increases in fees at the University and in the
educational sector in the country, the Union needs
a leadership that is focused and that has direction,
someone that...will stand his/her ground to fight for
the right of the students.
What was your vision for the Students’ Union
when you became president?
To implement the decision taken years ago by the
Board of Governors to make the Students’ Union
independent and hence register the Union as a
charity, which will give me the opportunity to create
jobs or avenues for job opportunities in the Union
for the students. Being independent as regards job
opportunities means we can run our own business.
What has being president taught you about
yourself?
That I have the potential to effect changes by
constructively getting involved in my environment,
that I have the heart to take up challenges and to
consult relevant people that can advise and assist
with whatever challenge I might face.
What kind of career path are you hoping to
follow after graduation?
Education (medical line) - my aim is to have a
leading educational consultancy firm which will
anchor its services on quality and affordable
education and putting students first.
Top tips for new students?
Study hard...play considerably but always
remember, procrastination is the thief of time,
so put your primary aim first...

Accommodation
Where will I live?
Living away from home for the first time is an
exciting prospect but it can also seem a little
daunting. Our Accommodation Bureau can help you
find somewhere safe, affordable and comfortable
to live, whether you want to stay in private rented
accommodation or halls of residence.
The key to finding somewhere great to live is to take
your time. There are many things to consider when
choosing accommodation:
Do you want to be within walking distance of
your campus? Are you looking for a structured,
supportive environment, or independence?
Is there a particular area of London that you’d
like to live in?

‘ I must say it makes
it so much easier for

accommodation thing

Staff profile
Tara Young, senior research fellow
(Faculty of Social Sciences and
Humanities), author and researcher
in UK gang membership
I joined London Met in 2004, and began working with
Professor Simon Hallsworth* on a number of research
projects that have attempted to establish the reality of
‘gangs’ in the UK and the offending profile of ‘gang’
groups.
I have spent the last 8–9 years contextualising and
redefining the ‘gang’. My work offers a critical appraisal
of the dominant discourse around gang-related violence.
I worked for various organisations, including the
Metropolitan Police, The Youth Justice Board, Borough
Councils and charities that want to understand gang
behaviour. I’m an applied social researcher, so I have
done a great deal of empirical research with young people
involved in street-based groups or ‘gangs’.
Over the last decade, I have worked on a number
of projects focusing on ‘gangs’. One, commissioned
by the Youth Justice Board, looked at young women’s
involvement in gang-related offending. The research found
that, contrary to the American literature on gangs, there
were no initiation rituals amongst the UK groups sampled
and that young women’s involvement in street-based
groups, fighting, and weapons use, was largely minimal in
comparison to their male peers.
I also teach quite a bit. This semester I am running a new
module – it is very popular, with 196 students on it! The
focus of the module is on the engagement of youth in
crime and violence. It offers a critical perspective of some
of the dominant theories about young people’s involvement
in deviant and law-breaking behaviour. In the module I
share some of my findings so the students always have
access to new research.

and Evaluation Research (CSER)

Juan David Lopez, BA Music and Media
Management graduate*, and creator of
Avenant Law, Intruder Records/Tidal Wave
Records, and MusicLawContracts.com
* See BA Music Industry Management

I got involved with the Student Enterprise Programme
back in 2011. I was told about it by a fellow graduate from
London Met (Thomas Kulbokas – Made in Shoreditch,
Nearby Digital). I remember meeting him for a coffee and
him telling me about these University facilities where you
could use shared office space and meeting rooms for
free (initially). I thought it was great and got in touch with
the person then in charge (Matthew Connelly) and he
contacted me a couple of weeks later as soon as there
was something available.
I had started my business from my bedroom and was
renting meeting rooms at a Christian place in central
London which, at the time, was taking a considerable
chunk of my income. Having a base at the Accelerator
really helped me establish my company and give an image
of professionalism.
Once at the Accelerator, I met other entrepreneurs and
accessed multiple business development seminars and
workshops. All of this really inspired me and helped me
turn my bedroom business into a fast growing enterprise
now encompassing a music management company
(Intruder Records/Tidal Wave Records), a music law
consultancy (Avenant Law) and a music contracts web
store (MusicLawContracts.com).
During my degree I had the opportunity to sample multiple
areas of knowledge and interact with people of different
backgrounds and skills. This experience made me what
I am today and shaped my work ethic. I was never
interested in leaving university and working for a company
for the next 30 years. I wanted to go out there and gain

tailored workshops, employer presentations and
recruitment events to help you hone your skills,
meet potential employers and market yourself
successfully.
You can also arrange one-to-one meetings with

‘The Careers Service at London Met has been
extremely useful and gave me the opportunity
to develop confidence in writing my CV, cover
letters, applications for graduate schemes and
interviews. After applying for several roles, I started
an internship in a small company. During the
internship, I was still applying for other jobs and
the Careers Service has been always available to
support me. After a few months of perseverance, I
finally found the job I really wanted – at Bloomberg,
the world leading financial information provider. I
was at Bloomberg for 3 years working as an analyst
where I gained experience of working in a global
company. I recently moved on and I now work
at Royal Bank of Scotland as an associate in the
investment banking division.’

Our Career Mentoring Programme gives you
the opportunity to be matched with a business
professional who will help you to achieve your career
goals.
Over the course of a year, you’ll discuss key industry
trends and gain an insider’s view of the working
world. Mentees often capitalise on networking
opportunities provided by their mentor, and there
is the potential to obtain a professional character
reference. Previous students have enjoyed
workplace visits, work shadowing and work
experience opportunities as part of the programme.

Student profile
Whitney Brown, Business School student

Doing my degree at London Met helped my passion for PR
grow. I was introduced to ex-industry professionals, who
used their experience to teach me, and other programmes
which encouraged that passion. Programmes such as the
‘Work Placement module’ gave me hands-on experience
and the ‘Study Abroad Programme’ enabled me to
visit the University of Tennessee Martin and learn about
communications in the USA. It was whilst in the USA I
came across the Talk PR internship; at the time I was very
interested in working at a PR agency. When I returned to
the UK, I researched further into the internship and came
across the Taylor Bennett Foundation which surprisingly
was starting a few days after my birthday - definitely a sign.
My traineeship with the Taylor Bennett Foundation was a
great experience. Having Talk PR sponsor the programme
was a bonus; the agency introduced me to a sector of PR
I had never experienced before. The 10 week programme
gave me all the practical experience I needed to back up
the theory I learnt at London Met.
Having done my degree, it prepared me for presentations,
writing press releases and targeting different media. For
example modules such as ‘Public Relations Strategy’
helped when simulating targeted campaigns for brands
such as D&G. However, the main skill my degree gave
me was the confidence to present. Public speaking and
presenting is a key skill to have in the industry, and my
three year degree gave me more than enough practice.

Volunteering
London Met’s Reach team offers students the
chance to gain vital employability skills through
volunteering placements. East End Citizens Advice
Bureau, St Mungo’s, Springboard for Children
and the Terrence Higgins Trust are just a few of
the not-for-profit organisations in which students
have worked as witness service volunteer workers,
volunteer receptionists, trainee advisers, literacy
tutors, freelance magazine writers and assistant
manager interns.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to build your
confidence and your CV, and has a positive impact
on the local community and further afield.
The London 2012 Olympics: Students at London
Met took part in one of Britain’s most memorable
events by volunteering as games makers and
officials at the Olympics. 160 were also employed
to bolster the Games’ security operation.
‘Volunteering is a fantastic way to develop your
skills...It allows you to apply what you learn in
the classroom to a real-world situation, with
tangible results. Not only are you giving back
to the organisation and the community, but
you get great material for your CV, valuable
contacts and a rewarding experience.

Abby Godwin, Business School graduate,
derivatives funding operations analyst
at Goldman Sachs
Choosing to study at London Met was one of the best
decisions I ever made. With the campus situated in the
heart of the city of London it was easy to network with City
professionals and make practical sense of the complex
financial and economic theories I learnt in class.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course content and the way the
lectures, workshops and assessments were impeccably
delivered and administered. As a single mother I received
incredible support and guidance from both teaching and
non-teaching staff during my studies at London Met.
In my second year, I enrolled on the Short Work Placement
Module with BusinessWorks, as part of my study
programme. With the amazing support and guidance of
London Met’s BusinessWorks and the Careers Service, I
managed to secure a five-week placement as an accounts
officer. This helped me sharpen my employability skills
and further prepared me for the corporate world, as later
on I secured a well-paid summer internship with Barclays
Capital through SEO London. Before the start of my
final semester, I began applying for investment banking
graduate positions. Goldman Sachs shortlisted and invited
me to take part in two assessment centres.
Thereafter, in December 2010 I was offered a full-time
position as a derivatives funding operations analyst on
the 2011 Graduate Programme. My job entails liquidity
management, risk and control management, amongst
various other complex tasks. I really enjoy my role and the
people I work with at Goldman Sachs. It feels even more
rewarding to find that a lot of the course material I learnt at
London Met is relevant to my work at Goldman Sachs and
to present day society.

Staff profile
Owsun Abebrese, academic leader
for the Faculty of Law, Governance
and International Relations, recruitment
co-ordinator, barrister at law, and Judge
of the First Tier Immigration Tribunal

I was born in Ghana, West Africa. After undergraduate
study, I was called to the Bar in 1985 at the Inner Temple. I
completed my pupillage at 9 Stone Buildings, Lincoln’s Inn
and began working at Tooting and Balham Law Centre as a
housing lawyer. Working at the Law Centre was a fantastic
experience – for the first time I had control of my own case
load and could go to court without having to be instructed
by a solicitor beforehand.
In 1989 (while employed at the Law Centre) I returned to my
studies and obtained an LLM. During my masters, I focused
on areas such as immigration, civil litigation, landlord and
tenant, and African family law.
I have been a member of staff at London Met since 1989. I
taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in the
areas of property, immigration and asylum and evidence,
and am now an academic leader.
Over the years I have seen so many people achieve
extraordinary things time and time again. That is why we say
that we provide excellent education which is still affordable.
Anyone thinking of going into the legal profession needs to
consider that the profession is extremely competitive and
those who come from certain backgrounds do have an
advantage such as contacts and confidence.
However, in my opinion (based on my 24 years at London
Met), prospective students will find that academics hold
a fundamental belief that it does not matter what your
background is – you have the potential to succeed if you are
willing to work hard and to believe in yourself as we believe
in you. What has helped me in my career is a belief in my
own ability, hard work, and the importance of building good
relationships with whoever you come across in life.

Is it worth it in the end?
We think so, but don’t just take our word for it:
People with degrees earned an average of
£12,000 a year more than non-graduates
over the past decade, statistics show
BBC website, April 2011
When you balance the cost of tuition fees against
the higher employment and earning potential
of having a degree it’s easier to think of it as an
investment.

Your earning and employment potential with
London Met is assured – London Met is the
number 1 modern university for UK graduate
starting salaries (Sunday Times University Guide,
2012). See our careers page for more (p.40).

‘Students come to see us
with all sorts of concerns,
ranging from money
problems to health issues.
We help ease these worries
by directing students to the
help they need, leaving them
with clear minds so they can
approach their studies with
the rigour necessary to be a
success.’
Alison Jones, administration manager, Student
Services
How do I pay?
All students need to pay half their tuition fees
on their first day – if you have a student loan,
your fees are paid directly by the student loans
company – you just need to show proof of this
when you enrol. If you are paying your own tuition
fees, then after you pay the first half, the rest can
be paid in instalments up to three months after
your course starts, either online or in person in a
range of ways.

Student profile
Henry Charge, BSc Multimedia graduate,
now a web developer for Valtech

I work for a company called Valtech as a front end web
developer specialising in HTML, CS5 and Java Script. I
love working in London and feel privileged to do a job that
I enjoy a lot.
I think having multimedia on your CV definitely stands out
for employers – that’s one of the things they are looking
for. It helps having experience of a broad range of different
subjects that they cover in a multimedia degree – I’m
specialising in front end web development but it helps to
have the background skills – Photoshop, being able to do
video editing if need be.
The extra things that I did at Uni helped me a lot – things
like working for the WoW Agency for example. Another
module we did was about presentation skills. In my job I’ve
had to do presentations to 30 people – that module really
helped me. I found that having confidence in what I’m
saying counts for a lot.
Winning the prize for best undergraduate Multimedia
project at London Met gave me huge confidence going
into the workplace, it’s the sort of thing that stands out
on a CV and proves to employers that you can meet
your goals.
I eventually want to be a senior consultant, ideally
here at Valtech, if not, maybe in the future do some
contracting work, and in the far future maybe have
my own design agency.

Learning resources

Library and IT resources:
Our libraries house over half a million library print
items, a growing collection of electronic resources,
and staff to help you locate and use them. You will
have free email and Internet access, and, to save
time, self-service machines in the libraries allow
you to borrow and return your own material. Our
libraries also have zones for silent, quiet and group
study, plus bookable group study rooms.
Our facilities include e-journals, e-books and
electronic databases that you can also access
from home. You can browse our library catalogue
at http://catalogue.londonmet.ac.uk, or speak to a
librarian who can help you locate what you need from
our libraries, other libraries, or via inter-library loan.
We recently invested in a new research tool,
MetCat, which enables students to easily search
for journal articles, e-book chapters, e-theses
and many other online items in addition to the
University’s classic catalogue of books, journals
and DVDs.
Each library has open access networked PCs and
Macs with printers, copying and media facilities, and
Wi-Fi so you can use your own laptop – look out for
the MetNet signs.
Academic liaison librarians and subject guides
can help you to find, evaluate and use the most
relevant resources for your research, projects or
dissertation. We run drop-in workshops as well as
personalised sessions for course groups depending
on your learning objectives. We also publish online
tutorials and guides to help you find the resources
you need.

‘ We focus on building
the confidence and

job interviews. It’s all
about knowing how
to sell themselves to
potential employers
and having the
soft skills to match
their academic
qualifications.’
David Nevill, assistant vice president,
State Street Global Services

‘ Because all the lecturers
at London Met have
worked in the industry,
they have a lot of
contacts who come in
and give talks or let us
visit their offices. A lot
of the people we met at
InStyle said they started
as interns, so it is a great
opportunity.’
Thomas Gibson, BA Fashion Marketing
student, talking about his work placement at
top London fashion magazine InStyle

We recognise that students value this
engagement with the business community
to both inform their studies and build their
career experience. Therefore we offer you the
opportunity to undertake an assessed work
placement as part of your degree.
Examples of organisations that students have
undertaken placements are: Barclays Bank,
Arsenal Football Club, BBC Worldwide and
Air France.
The close working relationship between the
academic and business worlds in the City of
London creates a unique experience from which
to study. In addition it generates considerable
opportunities for you to build your knowledge,
business experience and network of contacts:

‘If I was to pick up the phone now and call one of
my lecturers or the people I studied with, we all
still share this close-knit connection with London
Met, and all of them would help me if I needed it.’

A step-by-step
guide to applying
Our application process is simple.
Step 1: choose your course
Choose your course from the list of courses on
our website.
You can start in September or January for many
of our courses. Check each online course page
for details on start dates.
Step 2: check the entry requirements

entry criteria or requirements before you apply.
Step 3: apply
How you apply will depend on the course,
whether you’re planning on starting in September
or January, and how you’d like to study, for
example, full- or part-time.

ucas.com). This applies to both home and EU
