Things that were expected from a Miles Davis solo were a middle-range sound with a controlled use of vibrato and a sensitive use of phrasing and silences. Davis was an incredibly talented Trumpeter and began his lessons at the age of 13. He developed his personal style by adapting the style of his Idols Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, his main influence being Gillespie. Compared to Gillespie’s style, Davis was more economical with his style and less influenced by bebop. For example in Miles Davis’ version of It Ain’t Necessarily So (Porgy and Bess) the entire piece is a solo performance from Miles Davis and it is in the style of cool jazz. Davis develops the main theme of the original song by adding passing notes every section.;.
