The
 Na?onal

 Council
 reports
 that
  annually
 nearly
 3,000
 people
 in
 the
 United
  States
 die
 from
 choking.
 A
 large
 percentage
  of
 those
 persons
 are
 over
 65

 of
 age.

• Neurological

Choking
 and
 aspira?on
 are
 common
  problems
 in
 persons
 with
 developmental
  disabili?es.
 A
 number
 of
 factors

High Risk Foods: In
 addition
 to
 these
  identified
 factors
 that
  increase
 the
 risk
 of
  choking,
 the
 most
  common
 foods
  identified
 as
 ‘high
 risk’
  for
 choking
 include:

•Hotdogs •Grapes •Peanut
 butter •Peanut

 President’s
 Council
  on
 Fitness,
 Sports,
 &
 Nutri5on
 in
 honor
 of
 Na5onal
  Physical
 Fitness
 and
 Sports
 Month.
 During
 the
 month
  of
 May,
 we
 challenge
 you
 to
 include
 30
 minutes
 of
  physical
 ac5vity
 every
 day. Did
 you
 know
 that
 regular
 physical
 ac5vity
 increases
  your
 chances
 of
 living
 a
 longer,
 healthier
 life?
 It
 also
  reduces
 your
 risk
 for
 high
 blood
 pressure,
 heart
  disease,
 and
 some
 types
 of
 cancer.
 Yet
 in
 Tennessee,

  29.2%
 of
 the
 popula5on
 or
 greater
 for
 more
 than
 70%
  of
 coun5es
 don’t
 get
 enough
 physical
 ac5vity!

The
 Physical
 Ac?vity
 Guidelines
 for
 Americans
  recommend
 that
 people:

 Aim
 for
 2
 hours
 and
 30
 minutes
 of
  moderate
 aerobic
 ac5vity
 each
  week.Moderate
 ac5vity
 includes
 things
 like
  walking
 fast,
 dancing,
 swimming,
 and
 raking
  leaves.

Cutter, Amanda and Brandy took part in the Nashville Color Run 2013

 Do
 muscle-‐strengthening
 ac5vi5es
 –
 like
  liPing
 weights
 and
 using
 exercises
 bands
 –
 at
  least
 2
 days
 a
 week.

No
 maser
 what
 shape
 you
 are
 in,
 together
 we
 can
 rise
 to
 the
 challenge
 to
 get
 more
 ac5ve
  during
 the
 month
 of
 May!

COACH’S CORNER April 2013

I
 was
 very
 proud
 to
 asend
 the
 Lawrence
 County
  Special
 Olympics
 on
 Friday
 April
 12th
 to
 support
  Jeffrey
 Lisrell
 and
 the
 Yarbros
 who
 are
 part
 of
 our
  MillarRich
 family.
 It
 was
 a
 very
 exci5ng
 and
 special
  day
 for
 everyone
 involved
 with
 Channel
 4's
  Snowbird
 as
 the
 special
 master
 of
 ceremonies.

 The
  games,
 music
 and
 food
 were
 well
 organized.
 Special
  kudos
 to
 Carol
 and
 Alvin
 Yarbro
 for
 all
 their
  volunteer
 efforts.

 Well
 done!
  Jeffrey
 has
 been
 involved
 in
 Special
 Olympics
 for
  many
 years
 through
 his
 schools.

 He
 asended
 the
  State

 Games
 in
 2004
 while
 a

 This
  year,
 Jeffrey
 par5cipated
 in
 the
 100
 meter
 dash,
  long
 jump
 and
 the
 soPball

 He
 won
 first
 place
  ribbons
 in
 both
 the
 dash
 and
 long
 jump!
 He
 placed
  third
 in
 the
 soPball

  As
 a
 MillarRich
 coach
 I
 am
 blessed
 to
 be
 part
 of
 the
  lives
 of
 the
 extraordinary
 individuals
 we
 serve.

  Those
 blessings
 were
 reinforced
 watching
 Jeffrey
  succeed
 in
 so
 many
 aspects.
