SECURITY COMMITTEE REPORT
We experienced 4 minor crimes in our community the past two months. (1) A break in occurred in the 12300 block of Shadetree Lane some Ɵme between 9:30 and 11:15 AM, June 19th. Someone threw a rock through a family room window at the back of house and leŌ via the front door. They took a 27" computer monitor, a Wii and controllers, Xbox controllers, several pieces of jewel‐ ry. (2) B&E into car on driveway at 12100 block of Mt. Pleasant Drive late at night on 7‐1‐13. Garage door open‐ er and small items in car were taken. Nothing was taken from the open garage. No damage to car so it was possi‐ bly unlocked. (3) B&E on 9200 block of Twin Hill Rd on 7/11/13 @ 4:15 PM. The kitchen window was broken out and electronics and alcohol stolen. They leŌ via slid‐ ing door. (4) B&E in 12400 block of Twin Hill Lane on 7/11/13 while owners were away. The criminals used a crowbar to separate the door from the frame and enter the house. All recommendaƟons for protecƟon were followed except that Police recommended a longer and stronger deadbolt. All incidents were reported via 911 to the County Police. There were no alarm systems in the homes for any of these unfortunate incidents. The Fire/EMS Department does have a ambulance fee billing program. They contract with a third party to aƩempt collecƟon from insurance companies. While the third party may send noƟce about the bill to a ciƟzen, the ciƟzen should never receive a bill for the service, and should forward anything looking like a bill to their insurance company. This informaƟon came directly from the County Fire Chief with assistance from Councilwoman Mary Lehman. Sandi Jimenez and I, both from Orwood Lane, graduated from the Prince George’s County CiƟzens Police Acade‐ my. This 12 week course introduced us to all aspects of the police department. We now have a beƩer under‐ standing of how the department works. There will be a new academy starƟng on September 6, 2013. Please see detailed flyer in this newsleƩer for specific informaƟon. You may call or email me for addiƟonal informaƟon, and also for an applicaƟon form. Reduce theŌ from your vehicle by parking your vehicle in a well lighted area. Make sure you remove all items of

Do you need to ask yourself are my lights on? Most people leave lights off during the night time and what does that do for you and your neighbors??

Invites these guys

Yes, you’re correct -- thieves.

The night time hours are the peak hours for thieves to take YOUR car for a joy ride or take your hard-earned possessions from you. WHY? • • • The exterior of the house is dark and provides a hidden area so these individuals can do their work. If it is dark they know you or fellow neighbors cannot see them. People have that mindset “it will not happen to me,” and leave cars unlocked. Leaving valuables on seats or in plain view (exp. Computers, iPods, GPS, money, ETC) So how do we prevent this from happening to us or our neighbors? • • • Good Question!

Lighting your exterior of you house with sensor lights or porch/ garage lights are a huge plus, this makes it very hard for someone to sneak around your property unnoticed. Secure your vehicles!! Take items out of your vehicle and if using a GPS, wipe the window down (they look for the suction cup rings). If they can’t see it, it’s not there. These steps will help provide more security to your property and vehicles. So light up those criminals and keep them out of your neighborhood. GLO in the GARDEN
Hi Neighbors, Each Ɵme I drive down Oxwell Lane and make the leŌ onto Ivo‐ ry Pass, I check out the Framing‐ ham at 8720. The variety of plants that beckons and say "Welcome " are striking. There are Knock Out rose bushes of pink, red, and yellow that re‐ boom all summer. SoŌening the base of these plants are several types of large leaf hosta. Jessie and Susan Hensley have lived in the house for twenty years. Jessie says he was moƟvated to plant flow‐ ers to please his mother in law who lived with them. He says she was the sweetest person, treated him like her son and loved beauƟful flowers. When viewing this flow‐ er bed your eyes begin to noƟce the tall, large white or red lilies tucked in between the roses. I asked Jessie what is his secret to such large, healthy plants? He says he ferƟlizes all his plants in the Spring, then sprinkles Osmacote weekly. He also uses Miracle Gro plant food. He has amended his flower beds with Leaf Gro and ScoƩs top soil. Knock Out roses are re‐blooming roses. What that re‐ quires is for you to cut off the spent roses and ferƟlize The University of Maryland has been promoƟng a pro‐ the plants, then within six weeks you have some splendif‐ gram called "Grow it, Eat it". The program encourages erous impact ! home gardeners to grow their own fresh produce. Jessie is also interested in planƟng vegetables but does not have a suitable place for them, so he created the place by purchasing "grow boxes". These are vinyl con‐ tainers that are 36 inches long and 20 inches deep. They have a watering tube on the side that drains into the boƩom of the box. There is also a place on the boƩom where you can check the soil for proper amounts of moisture. Jessie has posiƟoned these growing boxes along a pathway to a garden room. The sun is strong in that area and the tomatoes are BIG. He also grows string beans and cucumbers. MONTPELIER TODAY PEAR TREE PROJECT: Several of the trees that the county planted last year to replace the old pear trees have died. According to Kim Moyer who is the Project Coordinator, Neighborhood Design Center, the Department of Public Works is send‐ ing someone to reassess the situaƟon. Hopefully those trees will then be replaced in the fall. Please phone Kim 301 779 6010 if you have dead trees in front of your property. REMEMBER IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO WATER THE TREE AFTER IT IS PLANTED. If you have a neighbor who has a garden you think should be featured in our newsleƩer, send me their name and address. Thanks for all your support QuesƟons ? E mail glo‐ [email protected] or check the Home and Garden informaƟon Center website: www.hgic.umd.edu for oth‐ er Ɵmely Ɵps. Gloria Hynes Master Gardener 19 Sept-Oct 2013 Of course, I could not leave without asking Jessie to share some Ɵps of his success. He swears that the nursery that has all the best plants, and starter vegetables with the lowest prices is Papa John's nursery. It is located off Rt. 97 North, second leŌ onto New Cut Road. This is the place where he purchases most of his plants and ferƟlizer. Sounds like I must take a ride with my gardening buddy and check it out.
