Moonlight Sonata and Send in the Clowns
Arranged by
Alana LaGrange
1. What key are you in? Idea, what scale would have these chords?
The first 4 measures are in the key of C Minor.
IIIm7
V7 of N7 (Fb) N7 V7 IIIm7 V7 of IIIm7
Step by Step, how to practice, and learn this song.
1. First know your key and the chords you are playing. Memorize the chords and be able
to write them out without the music.
2. Memorize the song in the blocked positions above.
3. I have given you the fingering for the octaves in the left hand. Practice, Practice...........
Why this fingering? This fingering is used so that your left hand can move from
octave to octave playing legato. This fingering is a must and once you get used to it
it will be fun to play.
When I write (V7 of), this is taught in the jazz class. Rule: Any chord may be preceded
by its' V7 chord.
If you follow my guidelines for practicing, you will learn to memorize much faster,
play in perfect rhythm, and play all your notes correctly. Know your notes in the
chord groups, you will learn so much faster.

Moonlight Sonata and Send in the Clowns
1. Memorize this before you move to the next part. Be sure you are using correct fingering
and pedaling. This piece has to be played legato.
2. It will be very easy to strike the first beat in each tuplet louder. But.............each note
must have the same weight or loudness unless it is marked with an accent. This will
take practice, but you can do it, just listen.

1. Again, memorize the blocked chords, and name them.
2. Notice the time signature changed in measure 7.
3. Notice the fingering in the right hand. Be sure to follow the fingering
exactly.
What key is this? It has changed.
The Key Change: We are now in the key of E . We moved from the C minor to the
new key. RULE: To change keys there has to be a pivotal chord that is in both keys.
The pivotal chord is the B in measure 4. B chord is common to both the key of
C minor and E .
This will give you some ideas, plus, this rule is how jazz artists can change chords,
such as adding a IIm7, V7, before chords. Actually changing keys giving us those
beautiful color tones.
