Fire company seeking outside volunteers By ROBERT LINNEHAN The Moorestown Sun Moorestown Township Fire District No. 1 is opening its volunteer ranks to non-Moorestown residents for the first time in the fire de partment’s history h istory. New volunteers must be within five miles miles of either of the district’s fire stations and must be certified by the state as “Firefighters One” prior to joining. The 100 percent volunteer department currently has 50 to 55 volunteer firefighters on staff. The volunteers are split between the two district fire stations and respond to calls coming out of each zone, Fire District Administrator Chris Chesner said. However, the district only has about 25 “interior firefighters,” he said, which means that only 25 firefighters can actually go into a burning building or structure when on the scene of a fire, he said. It’s a big-time commitment, Chesner said, and with many volunteers also holding down one or more jobs and with family duties as well, it can be very tough to find time as a volunteer. “It’s tough during the day for our district’s response. We need more members during the day, more members 24 hours a day, day, seven days a week actually,” actually,” Ches-

The lawsuit is ongoing, Coleman said, and East Gate’s liquor license application will be dependent on the outcome outcome of the suit. Coleman informed him that unfortunately the township would have to refund the deposit.

We’re trying our best to bolster our ranks.” The district is focusing on “retention and recruitment” for its volunteers, Chesner said, and this new program will be reevaluated after being in place for six months. It went into effect in late June, he said, and the department has already signed up one new volunteer who doesn’t live in Moorestown, but is within the five-mile radius. “We’d love for people to knock
on our door, ask us questions, and get to know us. It’s a lot of fun, it’s demanding, there’s no doubt about that. We’re up front with them about that,” Chesner said. “The initial training is 140 hours, it’s a big-time commitment that they have to go up to the fire academy. Every Thursday T hursday evening you have drills for two to four hours, and then 700 fire calls a year.” Want more information? Sport sponsorships may start in spring SPORT Continued from page 2 township. The sponsorship opportunities will vary from signs on an outfield fence, Carew said, to having the name of a company or business on the facility’s scoreboard. However, to make the program more successful, Carew said the
township council should seriously consider amending the zoning board’s sign size resolution to allow for larger signs at the fields. The resolution is extremely strict about the size of the signs, Carew said, and to allow for more revenue through the sponsorship they should be bigger. The sponsorship program will likely not be ready for the fall sport season, he said, but should be able to be instituted by the spring.

‘25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ continues through July 21 Some people think Marc Dalio is a beast. Actually the director for the 2012 MoorArts summer theater production is a pretty nice guy. But he heard plenty of applause when he starred as the Beast and Gaston in the Broadway National Tour of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” Dalio’s acting credits loom large and include a series of leading roles – yet he is equally accomplished working behind the scenes. His directorial resume is studded with familiar favorites like “South Pacific,” “Guys and Dolls” and “Godspell,” but he also makes a point to get involved with shows that offer something fresh and challengin challenging. g. It was the opportunity to direct “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” that brought Dalio to Moorestown this sum-
“Spelling Bee” is a favorite among theater insiders. Known for its brisk wit as well as its empathy and heart, the show focuses on a group of brainy middleschool misfits (played by young adults), each vying to emerge as the winner of the county spelling competition. The characters become more endearing as their personalities and back stories are revealed. As they grapple with adolescent angst, overbearing parents, and the rules rules of the game, they leave the bee with some life lessons under their belts, making the show not only funny,, but wise. funny Dalio’s vision for the MoorArts production includes the audience participation and ad lib interjections by the players that helped make the musical a tony winning hit.
