Thanksgiving for those less fortunate

Residents believe
in supporting local
businesses this season
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Thanksgiving, Black Friday
and Small Business Weekend
were held last week, where families got together to share a meal
and what they are grateful for, as
well as shop some of the best
deals of the season. Moorestown
businesses celebrated the two
shopping holidays with a plethora of sales and special offers.
Last week, The Sun walked
around Main Street, asking visitors and residents what their
shopping plans were for the holiday season and their thoughts on
shopping small businesses.
Kelly
Hillver,
a
former
Moorestown resident, came into
town to celebrate Thanksgiving
and will be back for Christmas.

Holiday cookie workshops for kids Dec. 12, 19
By KAHRA F. BUSS
Dept. of Parks & Recreation
The Recreation Kitchen is really heating up these days – and just
in time for the holidays! What
better way to ring in the holiday
season than with holiday cooking
workshops for our youngest
chefs?
Two Saturdays in a row, instructors James Hilton and Chris
VanSciver will teach fourth to
sixth graders the finer points of
cookie making with the Holiday
Cookie Workshop.
Hilton and VanSciver are accomplished bakers having a combined 25 years in restaurant and
bakery experience. Their goal is
to educate and inspire young bakers to create and enjoy baking on
many levels – to learn baking
techniques, to understand the science behind successful baking

and to gain valuable skills. These
new workshops are an introduction to cookie baking.
On Saturday, Dec. 12 and then
again on Dec. 19, this two and a
half hour workshop will cover
the basics of holiday baking, including measurements, ratios
and proportions. Children will be
given hands-on instructions for
making
cookie
favorites.
Food prepared will be available
to take home and enjoy afterward.
These specialty classes are the
first in a series of one-day workshops designed to intrigue
prospective bakers and chefs.
Cooking is a life skill that all children should learn, and what better way to start learning than
with a fun, holiday-themed cookie
class? Additional workshops will
include things such as easy meal
preparation, dessert workshops,

appetizers and party themes and
more. The Recreation Commercial Kitchen is a space to make
cooking fun – recreational.
Register now for these fun, oneday workshops that promise to
stimulate the senses and motivate
even the biggest holiday procrastinator.
The Holiday Cookie
Workshops will be offered for
children grades four through six
on Saturday Dec. 12 and 19 from
noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Recreation Commercial Kitchen, 3rd
Floor. The cost is $30 per student,
$50 for non-residents, and the
best part? The cookies come
home.

BOE gets update on PARCC timeline
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

At the Moorestown Township
Public Schools Board of Education meeting, updates were given
on strategic planning, and it was
announced a Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College
and Career data timeline was put
on the website along with resources for parents.
“Kat D’Ambra and Carole Butler gave us a brief update on the
PARCC timeline, which is on the
website for the public,” board
member Sheryl Sawin of the Curriculum Committee said.
At a meeting in October, Carole
Butler, director of curriculum
and
instruction,
announced
scores were lower than anticipated in New Jersey. However, she
wanted to caution that is typical
because it is a first-year test.
MTPS will get information on
scores to the public after reviewing
it by late December or January.
At last week’s meeting, it was
announced that there is a calendar of updates on the MTPS website, www.mtps.com, which will
be updated as time goes on. In the
future, there will be parent nights
to explain what the scores mean
to parents as well as to the board.

Also at the BOE meeting that
night, an update was given on
strategic plans for MTPS, which
stated the vision was to “enhance
our academic, emotional and social foundations while creating a
collaborative learning environment which fosters global awareness through personal opportunities and individual growth.”
There were three broad-based
goals to establish a culture of innovation to facilitate authentic
growth and development of engaged, dynamic and productive
learners; provide resources, targeted instruction and interventions tailored to learners’ foundational needs at all grade levels;
and design opportunities that
promote self-awareness, confidence, personal responsibility
and social mindfulness to provide
the foundation for competent
local and global citizenship.
Committees were made for
each goal. Timelines were implemented and action plans developed by each committee. The
work will produce action plans
that will be helpful and used for
planning and decision-making
purposes for following years.
For the first goal, the committee brainstormed ideas about innovation, summarized the main

ideas and came up with four
areas of the action plans. The
four action plans were to develop
common lines K-12, establish
score programs and educational
values K-12, develop real world
learning experiences K-12 as a
priority, and fostering these
processes, services, technology
and ideas to empower district
stakeholders. At the next meeting, they will continue to work on
these action plans.
The second goal took ideas
from a community wide strategic
plan survey last year and took
ideas and themes that resonated
with the committee. From there,
the committee will develop main
topics that will be develop into action plans. Those main ideas were
to establish an accessible K-12 robust data story for all of the students, expanding the width of the
data from the upper levels and
lower levels so teachers could
have a data dashboard for each
student and tailor to their needs;
analyze and restructure as needed current early intervention support systems in place for grades
K-2 establish needs assessment to
determine interventions needed
for students in grades three to 12;
and establish a collaboration
structure district wide to give
teachers time to analyze this data
for the purpose of guiding instruction for specific students.
The third goal focused on social and emotional learning and
did research on such by using resources from top leaders in the
field. From that information, they
created action steps that promote
a culture and climate that fosters
grit, resilience and growth mindset for all; develop systematic and
systemic social emotional learning standards in the curriculum,
which already are in place, but
may need to be adjusted; promote
connectedness to school environments by engaging in meaningful
opportunities; and create systems
for mentoring of pupils, adult to
student and student to peer.
The chairs of each goal committee will continue to come back
to the board with updates as they
go through the process of breaking down each of the goals.

DEC. 2–8, 2015 – THE MOORESTOWN SUN 7

First UMC Community-Sing
continues for 34th year
On Sunday evening, Dec. 6, the
First United Methodist Church
will celebrate the Advent season
by presenting the CommunitySing of Handel’s Messiah for the
34th consecutive year, under the
direction of Glenn Rodgers, organist and director of music at
FUMC in Moorestown. Accompanying on the organ will be Joseph
Russell.
This Community-Sing of Messiah attracts singers and listeners
from
nearby
communities,
Philadelphia, North Jersey and
the Shore.
There are no rehearsals before
the event and there are no feature
choirs or soloists, making this
particular Messiah Sing unique.
Everyone is seated together with
others who sing the same vocal
part (soprano, alto, tenor and
bass) and the solo numbers are

sung by the entire vocal section.
Thus giving everybody the
chance to “sing a solo.” Even
though the primary intent of a
Messiah-Sing is for those who
come to sing there have been
those who come to listen and sit
in the middle of a choir of a few
hundred singers.
The program will begin at 5
p.m. in the church sanctuary,
break for an intermission when
light refreshments will be served,
and will end approximately at 8
p.m. with the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Individuals may bring a
music score or purchase one at
the door at a cost of $8.50.
FUMC’s facilities meet the
standards set by the American
Disabilities Act for general access. Childcare will be available
and a freewill offering will be
taken.

Supporting her sister, giving to others
Elsa Law celebrates 11th birthday by asking for donations
for National Down Syndrome Congress in honor of her sister, Julianna
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

Special to The Sun

Elsa Law, right, has a laugh with her sister Julianna. Elsa recently turned
11 years old. In lieu of presents, she asked for contributions to the National
Down Syndrome Congress in honor of Julianna, who has Down syndrome.

December is just the start of
the season of giving. Around this
time of year, it is nice to share stories of giving and to give back in
many different ways.
Moorestown resident Elsa Law,
an 11-year-old, shared her story of
giving with The Sun. Elsa decided
that for her 11th birthday, rather
than presents, she would ask family and friends for a contribution
to an organization that is meaningful to her – the National Down
Syndrome Congress.
“I already have enough stuff
and thought it would be a good
idea to do it, my mom, too. So I
thought it would be cool to give a
donation to the NDSC,” Elsa said.

Police provide online protection
All departments should help online buyers and sellers with ‘safe zones’

s the holiday shopping season
is now officially underway, police departments across the
country are on high alert. That’s because, at this time of year, unfortunately, criminals are everywhere looking to take advantage of unassuming
shoppers who are just trying to enjoy
the season.
The criminals go out to malls, downtown shopping areas and other retail
hotspots just like the rest of us – but
they, instead, are after the goods we’re
buying, and the cash and cards that
we’re carrying.
It’s scary. And it’s sad. But it’s a reality of the world in which we live.
With online shopping as prevalent
as it is, and especially with peer-topeer sites such as Craigslist so com-

peer-to-peer transactions? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.

monplace, we’re glad to see that local
police departments are stepping in to
help the honest shoppers as best they
can.
Recently, the Cherry Hill and
Voorhees police departments announced a program available to the
residents of its town. The department
is providing two “safe zones” – one
outside in the parking lot, and one inside the lobby – where people can conduct legal peer-to-peer transactions.
Each location is equipped with security cameras that will record all activi-

ty in the zones, 24 hours a day, seven
days a week.
The Cherry Hill and Voorhees programs are timely, of course, with these
types of transactions becoming more
popular at this time of year. Neighboring Evesham Township released a
similar program of its own in April.
Police departments play a huge role
in making people feel safe. Their job is
not just to pull drivers over and arrest
criminals.
We couldn’t be happier about the
“safe zones” program in Cherry Hill
and Evesham, and we urge police departments in other towns to offer similar programs. If other towns do offer
the “safe zones” program, please remind your residents of it, and urge
them to use it.

Moorestown lacrosse players commit to play NCAA college game
The Moorestown Lacrosse Club recently
congratulated 12 Moorestown High School
seniors who have committed to play NCAA
college lacrosse.
The MHS lacrosse team is one of the
most storied and accomplished New Jersey
high school programs and has for many
years been consistently ranked at the very
top of numerous national polls. Overall
state champions for 13 of the last 15 years,
recent graduates of the program have gone
on to successful academic and athletic careers at leading university and college including Bucknell, Catholic, Chestnut Hill,
Colgate, Delaware, Duke, East Stroudsburg, Fairfield, Florida, Jacksonville,
James Madison University, Lafayette,
Lehigh, Longwood, Marist, McDaniel,
Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oregon, Penn
State, University of North Carolina, University of Southern California, Vanderbilt,
Villanova, Washington & Lee and Widener.
This year’s girls NCAA recruits and
their college choices are: Olivia Alvarez,

James Madison University; Julia Bolte,
Oregon; Jessie Britton, Bucknell; Claire
D’Antonio, Delaware; Christine Kirmsse,
Catholic; Lawson Hayes, Norwich; Jenna
Martinelli, Virginia Tech; Annika Nissen,
Colorado; Allison Rohrbach, Wagner; and
Genie Santarpio, Jacksonville.
MHS has also been one of the state's
most successful programs. Playing in the
competitive Skyland Conference, the team
won state Group Championships in 2008
and 2011. In 2012, Moorestown received its
first ever No. 1 seeding in the state playoffs.
Recent graduates have attended and played
for Connecticut College, Delaware, DeSales, Elizabethtown, Fairfield, Franklin
and Marshall, Maryland, McDaniel, Mount
St. Mary’s, Nazareth, University of North
Carolina, Rutgers, Salisbury, St. Joseph's,
Stevens Institute of Technology, and Washington & Lee.
This year's boys NCAA recruits and
their college choices are: Nick Polich,
Stevens Institute of Technology; and

Bryan Wright, University of Tampa.
“We are extremely proud of these 13
Moorestown student athletes,” Kelly Dalmass, president of Moorestown Lacrosse
Club, said. “Most, if not all, of them began
playing for our club at a young age and
each of them has shown steadfast dedication to their sport, their school and their
community. Each year tens of thousands of
high school students play lacrosse and only
a small percentage continue to play at the
NCAA varsity level. We are proud of their
academic and athletic accomplishments
and equally proud of them as young men
and women. They will no doubt continue to
make us proud as they go on to play at the
next level. I know I speak for everyone associated with the Moorestown Lacrosse
Club, especially the many dedicated volunteers, coaches, parents and club officerswhen I offer each of them a heartfelt congratulations on their successful high
school careers, and wish them all the very
best in the future.”

has a younger sister with Down
syndrome named Julianna, who
is 9 years old and is in third grade
at South Valley Elementary
School.
Elsa said her favorite part of
her sister is she is always happy.
Julianna said her sister is fun, as
they play pretend a lot.
“(I like that) she is always on
the bright side most of the time.
She understands when I’m happy
and sad, and she knows how to
cheer me up,” Elsa said.
“She’s fun and plays house,”
Julianna said about her sister.
Last summer, she and the Law
family attended the National
Down Syndrome Congress' Annual Convention in Phoenix, Ariz.
The NDSC provides information,
advocacy and support to individuals with Down syndrome and
their families, as well as the larger community. The convention is
an opportunity for families, educators, medical professionals,
therapists and researchers to
come together and learn from one
another. There are also fun parts,

such as dance parties during the
convention. It is held each year in
the summer at different locations.
“I learned more about what
Down syndrome really is and how
it works inside the human body,
and how it is really fun to have a
sibling with Down syndrome,”
Elsa said.
At this year's convention, Elsa
was old enough to participate in
the Brothers & Sisters Conference, which is a mini-conference
held during the convention that
brings siblings of individuals
with Down syndrome together.
During the workshop, Elsa wrote
notes to parents who were going
to have a child with Down syndrome and about her experience
with having a sibling with Down
syndrome.
“I said that they’re very happy
most of the time and they like
dancing, and they aren’t really
scared to show off their dance
moves,” Elsa said about her letter.
When the subject of her birthday came up this year, Elsa was
very enthusiastic about wanting
to do something that would benefit her little sister and others
whose lives are touched by Down
syndrome. So instead of presents
for her birthday, she asked family

and friends to donate toward the
NDSC.
Elsa was able to raise $500 for
the NDSC. The NDSC wrote her a
thank you letter, saying it will be
used toward its Brothers & Sisters Conference.
“I felt really good about it. It
was really nice that all of my
friends and family donated
money toward it,” Elsa said.
The Law family plans to go to
the NDSC next year. Elsa would
like others to understand Down
syndrome shouldn’t be seen as a
bad thing. Instead, she would like
others to be happy.
“I hope that most people think
of it as a good thing, and not a bad
thing. And that people be happy
because people with Down syndrome are happy. People being
happy makes other people happy;
it’s contagious,” Elsa said.
To learn more about Down syndrome and the NDSC, go to
www.ndsccenter.org.
“It is not a bad thing that people have it. I count it as an ability,
myself, because they are happier
than other people. People should
know that even though they look
different, they may be different
just enough to have more courage
than you,” Elsa said.

“When they buy full price
items, we offer to gift box and
giftwrap them free of charge. It is
friendlier services. We offer services that bigger stores don’t,”
Manning said.
Manning said supporting small
businesses not only helps that
business, but the local community and economy. An example of
that is Moorestown True Value
Hardware, which donated 10 percent of all purchases on Saturday,
Nov. 28 to the Community House,
as there was a fire at the building
two weeks ago.
“Small stores are the ones employing local people and supporting the community. We support
the small, local charities … those
dollars are going back into the
community when they shop
local,” Manning said.
Moorestown True Value Hardware offers most hardware needs,
as well as other products such as
gifts, flags and other things for
the house. It also offers Christmas
lights, lawn ornaments and other
holiday products. Each Saturday,
it gives out popcorn and soda to
visitors.
“Small businesses are the fabric of America, I believe, and to
keep parts of town alive and vitalized, you need shops in town and
people to support them more than
once a year. In our business, we
get a tremendous amount of support from our customers,” True
Value owner Julie Bender said.
According to Bender and fellow
True Value owner Peter Bender,
it is all about the customers. They

wouldn’t be where they are today
without them.
“We are a part of the community and feel that in a big way. We
feel very much a part of town. We
love this place and our customers,” Peter said. “It is a privilege to have a business in town
and be a special part of this
town.”
“We have a very loyal customer
following. We know them on first
name basis and we appreciate
those customers and they appreciate us,” Manning said.
Moorestown Mayor Victoria
Napolitano and Deputy Mayor
Phil Garwood toured some of the
local businesses earlier in the
week and also encouraged shopping local this holiday season.
“In addition to visiting our
local businesses on Black Friday
and Small Business Saturday, we
hope our neighbors will join us
for a new tradition on Dec. 3 as
the Moorestown Business Association and Main Street Merchants

roll-out the first-ever Main Street
Holiday Stroll,” Garwood said in
a release. “Town Council is proud
to stand with our local business
community, and we are proud to
live in a town that continues to
value these businesses that are
truly an integral part of
Moorestown.”
“Please take the pledge to shop
local and learn more about what
our county freeholders are doing
to help our local businesses
through the Shop Burlington
County First campaign by visiting www.shopburlingtoncounty.
com,” Napolitano said. “Together,
we can add millions back into our
town and county’s economy and
support our friends and neighbors that own these businesses
and help keep our small-community charm alive.”
The MBA Main Street Holiday
Stroll will be held on Thursday,
Dec. 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. where
Main Street will be decked out for
the holiday season.
