HOLIDAY

happenings
Mt. Laurel gears up for a festive season
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The days are getting shorter and the year
soon will be over, which can only mean the
winter holidays soon will be upon the residents of Mt. Laurel.
This year, those in town will have plenty of
seasonal events to keep them busy as the year
winds down.
On Thursday, Dec. 17, Mt. Laurel’s annual
“Santa Comes to Mt. Laurel” event once again
will take place as Santa makes an appearance
at the Mt. Laurel Community Center.
From 4-7 p.m., Santa will visit with residents and their families, and Santa will also be
available for pictures throughout the evening.
“Santa will arrive on the fire truck like always,” said Mt. Laurel recreation clerk Suzanna O’Hagan.

O’Hagan said the Lenape High School
Choir will also perform some holiday songs to
get everyone in the holiday spirit.
Kids will also be able to keep busy with
some arts and crafts projects, and refreshments will be provided.
Residents can call (856) 234-0001 ext. 1220 to
learn more.
However, for those who can’t wait until Dec.
17 to get into the holiday spirit, Fellowship
Community Church, located at 1520 Hainesport Road, will once again be hosting its multiscene live nativity performance this year.
On Dec. 5, 6, 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20 from 5-8
p.m., visitors will be guided across the
church’s grounds free of charge through depictions of familiar biblical scenes and stories
performed by more than 200 cast members.

District JROTC
program on rise
Lenape Regional High School District
program gives kids sense of belonging
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun

Exquisite LAKEFRONT executive home with incredibly private location within Norrsken Lake Estates. This custom home features 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and backs to the lake. The home welcomes you into a grand foyer
complete with marble flooring and a double staircase. The chef's kitchen offers cherry cabinetry, stainless steel appliance, hardwood flooring, a large center island, electric cooktop and double oven. There s also a bar/butler
pantry. The sliding glass door leads to a large deck that overlooks the lake. The formal living room, playroom and conservatory all offer wall to wall carpet while the family room boasts a fireplace and hardwood flooring.
Upstairs you will find 4 spacious bedrooms including a master suite with a large walk-in closet, a tray ceiling, a sitting area and private master bathroom with whirlpool tub and stall shower. For an added bonus there is a
door that leads from the master suite to a private second floor deck that over looks the lake and lower deck. Follow the pavers from the mud room to the 3 car detached garage to find more living space over the three bays.
The second floor of the garage offers a large home office as well as a home gym. Other features include two zoned heating and air conditioning, and a sprinkler system to help maintain this beautiful 4.67 acre park-like lot.

Of all five branches of the military, the Lenape Regional High
School District offers a glimpse
into three to its students.
It started at Lenape High
School 20 years back when the
U.S. Army decided to join the
ranks of the Indians and offer
programs to the school and its
students. More than 2,400 cadets
have now passed through the
high school’s doors on account of
those programs.
The U.S. Navy has since joined
Cherokee, and a year later, Seneca

was joined by the ranks of the
U.S. Air Force.
However, this does not handcuff students based on where
they live. This program is one of
the few areas in which the district
shares students.
If a Lenape student is interested in getting involved with the
Air Force, for example, he or she
is able to join Seneca’s program.
In fact, all three of the schools
have Shawnee students in their
programs.
The program these branches
offer is called the Junior Reserve

omorrow officially kicks off
the holiday season. Thanksgiving is here, and with it comes
family, friends, food and football.
In elementary schools across the
country this week, children will be
taught the history of Thanksgiving.
Some will celebrate it by making pilgrim and Indian hats out of paper and
by having a feast of their own. They’ll
be asked what they are thankful for
and share it with the class.
At most of our homes on Thursday,
we’ll be sitting around a TV or at a
dinner table or keeping a close eye on
the oven so we don’t burn the turkey.
We’ll be welcoming relatives, near and
far, to gather for a day where we can
also give thanks for all we have.
Quickly, as if in a blink of an eye,
that theme will shift to the two most

Your thoughts

holiday season? Share your thoughts

famous winter holidays – Christmas
and Hanukkah – and, with it, holiday
shopping.
But before you turn the page in your
mind to buying presents and decorating your house with lights, take an
extra minute this year to remember
what you’re thankful for, and help
those who might not be as lucky as
you. You might not see it in your community, but there are a lot of people in
New Jersey who need help. Legal Services of New Jersey, a group based in
Edison, recently released a report that
suggests that 2.8 million people in the

Garden State are living in poverty. A
family of four living in this state
would have to earn $60,000 per year to
be considered above the group’s poverty line. That’s because, according to its
President Melville Miller, the group
defines poverty as being significantly
deprived of any one particular need –
after considering practical costs for
everything from food, clothing,
health care, housing and transportation.
It’s expensive to live in our state –
we know that. And people are in need
throughout our state, not just in its
urban centers.
So be thankful for what you have,
and help those who aren’t in the same
position as you are. Do more for others
this holiday season. It’ll be the best gift
you can give.

JROTC teaches students citizenship, principal says
JROTC
Continued from page 2
Officer Training Corps. It has grown to be
a very popular program in the district, as it
has given outlets and opportunities to kids
who might never have found who they
were without it, as LRHSD Board Member
Joseph W. Borucki put it.
“The JROTC teaches our kids a sense of
citizenship, as well as service to our country,” Cherokee High School North Principal Donna Charlesworth said. “It teaches
our kids responsibility and accomplishment while building self esteem and instilling how to effectively work in a team.”
More importantly, this program takes a
wide range of students from all over the
spectrum and gives them a sense of belonging.

This is proven on a weekly basis
through the pride shown by JROTC members district wide when they wear their
uniforms to school on their assigned day of
the week. As Charlesworth put it, it is no
different than when the football team
wears its jerseys to school on Fridays before games.
Students don’t have to be athletic
enough to play on the sports teams or
smart enough to be on the honor roll; they
just need to show self-discipline and dedication to this group that welcomes them
with open arms.
“Our vision in the district is to continue
to promote this sense of citizenship,”
Charlesworth said.
The JROTC groups show off this pride
and citizenship to the public by getting
more involved in community service than
any other groups on campus.
The aggregate number of hours given

back to community over the 20-year period
the district has had the program has totaled more than 30,000 hours.
“The JROTC programs just bring a certain vibe to all of the events that they attend,” Seneca High School Principal Jeff
Spector said.
Along with a well-rounded curriculum
that focuses on leadership, teamwork, discipline and personal responsibility, the
program provides students with an abundance of unique experiences.
These students go to Army leadership
camps in the summer, they’ve been to Annapolis and West Point, they’ve been on
ships and military bases, they have the opportunity to be a part of their school’s
color guard and are given the opportunity
to compete on their drill teams.

Preschoolers win art supplies in contest
Recently, preschoolers from
The Goddard School in Mt. Laurel came out ahead in a national
art contest against more than 400
other Goddard Schools from
across
the
country.
The
goal
for the artwork was that it had to incorporate a lesson in STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art,
Math), and their playful piece did
just that.
The piece was created by the
kindergarten class who collaborated using their bodies, a yardstick, yarn and plastic cups to create a colorful pendulum masterpiece.
The winning artwork earned
the preschoolers a large assortment of art supplies and a visit
from Goddard Systems CEO Joe

briefs

Schumacher, and its VP of Education Craig Bach, for a hands-on
lesson and art project.
