V01was eastbound on State Road 16 in the inside eastbound lane. As V01 traveled eastbound, it struck the center median curb. As V01 proceeded across the center median, the front of V01 struck several plastic reflectors and a road sign. After being struck, the road sign broke through the driver side t-top of V01 and struck the driver in the head. After the collision, V01 continued eastbound on State Road 16 and turned north onto U.S. Highway 1. Deputies from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office observed V01 on U.S. Highway 1 and initiated a traffic stop at McMillian Street. The driver was transported to Shands Jacksonville Hospital via ambulance. The driver suffered severe head trauma and is in critical condition. Next of Kin notification was made at 1:05a.m. on December 3, 2012, to Robert Newton, the brother of the driver of V01. The investigation is ongoing.
