EDU
On August 2nd 2011 MBS College - The College of Crete was accredited by EDU – the
intergovernmental organization (IGO) formed in June 2011 under the guidelines and protocols of UN. EDU was
created aiming to provide international accreditation for higher learning institutions. Its aim is within the next
5 years to create a publicly accessible database of tertiary education/academic institutions.
The problem of illegal, fraud, and degree-mill institutions which often appear as “universities” is
becoming more intense following the continuous increase in the demand for higher education
qualifcations. This problem is twofold:
1) Increasingly students worldwide are misled by these institutions. This has fnancial implications for them
but most importantly it creates emotional distress and holds back their plans for career progression.
2) The higher education sector in general is negatively afected by the operation of these organizations. The
entire sector is infuenced by negative criticism and word-of-mouth which is generated by deluded students
and their families.
EDU is planning to create a database of the legal institutions in tertiary education at international level.
According to EDU Secretary-General, His Excellency G.Irving Levance, “Our ultimate goal is to curb the
questionable activities of fake schools and bogus accreditation agencies currently plaguing the global
educational market, particularly online”.
MBS College - The College of Crete was one of the frst education organisations to receive
accreditation by EDU. Mr Vangelis Tsiligiris, the College’s Principal, mentioned “we are honoured
by the accreditation of EDU. We strongly believe that this initiative will be a great success and it’s
going to be embraced by Higher Education Institutions worldwide. It is defnitely something which
was needed to reassure students and their families are not misled, while legal Higher Education
Institutions safeguard their reputation”.
You can fnd more about the accreditation of MBS by EDU in www.edu.int/MBS
British Accreditation Council (BAC)
MBS College - The College of Crete was inspected and successfully certifed by the British
Accreditation Council as a suitable institution for ofering higher education services. It received
excellent reviews (report of inspectors BAC, 22/01/2005& 18/02/2010) on the quality of the studies,
the facilities, the administration and the functionality of the College as a whole.
More specifcally, the report concluded “…MBS College - The College of Crete remains an impressive

Teaching & Learning Methods – Course Management
MBS College - The College of Crete’s strategic decision to collaborate with Stafordshire University and

opportunities at an international level.

The undergraduate programmes MBS College - The College of Crete delivers, consist of annual
modules, as is the case with every British University. There is a continuous assessment procedure in
place and the programme modules, allow the students to understand in depth the diferent thematic
aspects of their subject.
This is always achieved in conjunction with the use of new technology, together with more traditional
teaching and learning methods.
Assessment

assignments, presentations, team projects, written work etc. In this way, students gain a more
accurate and objective evaluation of their work, progress, strengths, and weaknesses. The only diference
between the students studying at MBS College - The College of Crete and those

In 2008, an e-study system was initiated, whereby students could download and use information
for completing their course assignments, and also communicate with the academic staf on a daily
basis.TURNITIN is also in use as a mechanism to trace plagiarism, which reinforces the importance
of original thought and accountability.
PCs and IT workstations with access to Nottingham Trent University’s, Stafordshire University’s
electronic library and journal sources are constantly available, while open wireless internet access at
the college’s facilities, enables both discovery and enquiry.
Library

to the renewal and the enrichment of the library content. One of the collaboration conditions with
Nottingham Trent University and Stafordshire University was the existence of a library, based on the

Living in Crete…
5O 51
The Island of Crete
Crete is an island with an exquisite 1,000 kilometer-long
coastline dotted with numerous coves, bays and peninsulas, which
aford a multitude of soft, sandy beaches along the beautifully blue
Mediterranean Sea.
This exotic scenery is the fnest in the world and has established Crete
as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations.
In addition, the island’s historic importance in today’s world as the
home of the Minoan civilization with important archeological fnds at
Knossos, Phaistos and Gortys, is evidenced by the tens of thousands
of visitors to these sites each year.
Crete has a rich mythology mostly connected with the ancient Greek
Gods. The Idaion cave at Mount Ida was the birthplace of the god
Zeus. The Paximadia islands were the birthplace of the goddess
Artemis and the god Apollo.
However, Crete is the largest island in Greece - the ffth largest in
the Mediterranean - and, within its diverse area of more than 8,000
square kilometers, there are many other jewels just waiting to be
discovered.
This “paradise island” falls in the North African climatic zone, and
thus enjoys signifcantly more sunny days and high temperatures
throughout the year.
Modern Crete ofers everything that a student needs: adventure,
relaxation, clubbing, sports facilities, sunny beaches and mountains
blanketed with snow, small shops and big malls.
The combination of expanding of the green energy industry expan-
sion and the natural gas fndings at the south of the island, makes
Crete one of the best regions for business growth in the years to
come.

Heraklion City
Heraklion is the 5th in size city of Greece. Near
the city’s area there are settlements from the
Neolithic Period. Even though there are just
a few fndings to prove it, it is believed that
the city was the port of the ancient city of
Knossos.
The city of Heraklion still enjoys its reputation
as one of the most attractive Mediterranean
capitals.
It has enough to ofer that the
cultural tastes and shopping needs of
both the visitors and the residents are fully
catered for. It is no accident that it has always
been the business and social center of Crete
throughout the ages and that status is
maintained today.
It plays host to many interests and
activities as well as providing a very pleasant
way of life. Heraklion is a city with one foot
rooted in the past, the other stepping into
the future. Currently the population of
Heraklion is approximately 200,000 people.
It is a very dynamic and cosmopolitan town,
particularly during the summer period when
thousands of visitors can be seen shopping
in the market or visiting the museums and
other places of interest.
Today Heraklion is the top choice for
tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.
The unique natural beauty favours the
development of alternative forms of
tourism and provides a combination of
mountain and sea sports. For those inclined
to modern entertainment, the city ofers
ample opportunities for everything you wish
for.
Heraklion is also the commercial and
scientifc centre of the island. It has a strategic
geopolitical position in the southeast basin
of the Mediterranean Sea connecting three
continents and many diferent cultures.
During the last 20 years the city has made
remarkable progress in the academic and
technological felds.
The dynamic and imaginative combination
of natural beauty, climate, strategic position,
cultural heritage and scientifc background
has created an appropriate environment to
add value to the broader entrepreneurial
activity in the region and has stimulated the
local economy.

Heraklion are among the most diverse in
Crete. Visitors can easily fnd souvenirs,
