News and Progress of the SOMP by the Secretary General (For comments or questions please contact: [email protected])
On behalf of the Society, I would like to wish all members a happy and prosperous 2007! This newsletter, Number 30 in the series, serves to inform members of developments and progress on various SOMP initiatives, to provide an update on the 2007 Annual General Meeting and to present other important society news.

2007 Annual General Meeting Arrangements for the 18th Annual General Meeting in 2007 are progressing well. The society’s president, president-elect, secretary general and deputy secretary general met on January 7, 2007 to develop final arrangements and plans. The meeting will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from Saturday, June 23 until Monday, June 25. A number of technical visits and an impressive cultural program have been organized for June 26th and 27th. The first announcement of the meeting has already been circulated electronically to all members and a hard copy will be mailed to everyone in early February 2007. All technical and business sessions will be held at the Sava Center (www.somp2007.org), a world-class conference facility adjoining the designated conference hotel, the Belgrade Intercontinental (www.ichbg.com). President Pavlovic has negotiated excellent rates for the hotel, the conference registration and other costs. The secretary general had the opportunity to visit the meeting hotel and conference facilities this month and was impressed with the location, organization and professionalism of the venue organizers. Please review the attached Preliminary Program and Registration information. The same documents are also posted on the website. Any questions regarding alternative accommodation, or issues with registration and travel, can be addressed directly by contacting our colleague at: [email protected]. Finally, Belgrade is easily accessible by air, road and rail and members have a number of choices for economic travel to the meeting. All of the society’s committees have already been contacted to develop programs on their assigned responsibilities and interest areas for presentation to the membership at the Annual General Meeting. Members who have suggestions or recommendations for the technical program of the Annual Meeting should contact the secretary general promptly. For convenience, the membership fee (Members - 40 Euros; Associate or Retired Members 20 Euros; Emeritus Members - No Fee) can be integrated into one payment with the meeting registration fee. The membership feel also includes a subscription to the Mineral Resources Engineering Journal. SDIMI 07 As mentioned in previous e-mails and messages, the Annual SOMP 07 meeting is coordinated with the 3rd Conference on Sustainable Development Indicators in the Minerals Industry (SDIMI 2007) that will be held on Milos, Greece, June 17-20, 2007. More information on SDIMI can be found at: http://milos.conferences.gr/?sdimi2007. New Society Members Congratulation to the new Society Members, elected during the last semester (in parenthesis the nominating SOMP Member):

With the addition of the colleagues above, the Society lists currently about 130 active members. Mineral Resources Engineering Journal Thanks to the work of our colleague, Prof. Gunhan Pasamehmetoglu, the first issue of the Journal is with the publishers and expected to be in circulation soon. Please visit the Journal’s website for more information, at http://www.mre.atilim.edu.tr/. The Journal will be available in a printed form as well as on-line. There will be four issues a year, namely: Jan-March, April-June, July-September and October-December. All SOMP members will receive, as part of their membership, a hard copy of each issue and will also be given access to the on-line version. Libraries of Universities around the world with mining/mineral engineering related departments/programs will receive hard copies of MRE free of charge. At this stage, no free on-line membership is considered to these institutions. All members are strongly encouraged to consider publishing in the MRE Journal. Papers can be submitted by e-mail to the editor-in-chief at [email protected]. Further information for manuscript preparation can be found at the official MRE website. 2008 Annual General Meeting The 19th Annual General Meeting of the Society in 2008 will be held in Aachen, Germany, under the Presidency of our colleague Prof. Martens. More details regarding this meeting will be made available to the members at the Belgrade 2007 Meeting. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, an effort will be made to coordinate the 19th Annual General Meeting with the annual Aachen meetings series. 2009 Annual General Meeting The 20th Annual General Meeting of the Society in 2009 will be held in Sidney, Australia, under the Presidency of our colleague Prof. Hebblewhite. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, an effort will be made to coordinate the 20th Annual General Meeting with the 4th Conference on Sustainable Development Indicators in the Minerals Industry (SDIMI 2009) that is scheduled to be held in Brisbane, Australia, under the leadership of Prof. Davis Brereton, University of Queensland. The Society will coordinate efforts with Australian colleagues to ensure that the SOMP AGM in 2009 can complement the dates and the theme of SDIMI 2009. Call for Proposals for the 2010 Annual General Meetings In order to facilitate the planning of the Society, a call has been issued for proposals to host the 21st Annual General Meeting in 2010. The deadline for receiving responses from colleagues interested in hosting the meeting, and serving as President of the Society for that year, is May 1, 2007. Those responding should provide a brief justification and a tentative program plan. It is anticipated that final decision will be made at the 2007 Meeting in Belgrade.

BELGRADE There is no place in the world with such a natural combination of oriental passion and European finesse. Having stood on the path of many conquests going both from the East and from the West, Belgrade has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, and has not the continuity of style and the elegance of similar European big cities. On the other hand, it has abundant vitality, sense of humor, curiosity. That’s why you will never get bored in Belgrade!

BELGRADE FROM THE RIVERS For centuries, Serbia’s capital city, Belgrade, has shaped and reshaped itself on the banks of the Danube and Sava rivers, meandering around its jewel, the Kalemegdan Fortress.

OPLENAC Just 85 km from Belgrade is the wellknown historical location associated with Karađorđe, the leader of the First Serbian Insurrection against the Turks in 1804. The sites that have been preserved in Topola are Karađorđe’s Mansion, a log-church, and a small fort. Towering above Topola is Oplenac Hill with the Church of St.George. It was built as a mausoleum in 1910-1930 using white marble. Its interior is decorated with mosaics of great value.

WINE TOUR The Srem region is one of the oldest viticulture areas in Europe. The grapevine has sprouted on Mt. Fruška Gora’s fertile hills for over 1,700 years, ever since it was first planted by Roman Emperor Probus of the ancient Sirmium. In this area, vineyards spread over the slanting terrains, plateau and slopes of Mt. Fruška Gora, and the vicinity of the Danube is most beneficial. Sremski Karlovci is a rare pearl of Serbian culture and spirituality. The town-museum stands side by side with the famous European cities. The baroque core of the city boasts of many historical buildings that first overwhelm you with their beauty and then with their significance.

KOVAČICA VILLAGE Kovacica village, 49 km north of Belgrade, inhabited mostly with Slovak minority. The village represents a unique oasis of living traditions, original arts and crafts and a way of life almost untouched by global trends. Kovacica has gained worldwide fame for its tradition of naive painting, with internationally recognized naive painters such as Zuzana Halupova and Martin Jonas.
